I am reading this book with the women at my church in Long Beach,CA. I loved the chapter about being equally yoked. I have a habit of saying I want a man who is equally yoked but settling for good conversation and a pretty face. Chapter 2 in this book helped me by allowing me to realize I need to use my head and not my heart so much in the beginning and to follow my intuition. I loved the analogy to ill fitting shoes because i am also guilty of trying to make something fit when it doesn't. I look forward to the remaining chapters.

I purchased my copy in Atlanta after I heard Dr. Cornish speak at Bishop Eddie Long's "Single But Not Alone 2005 Conference."
On my flight back to California, I read this entire book realizing just how valuable my life is to God. We are so covered with deep affliction and wounds behind relationships that we try to cling on to something that God has absolutely nothing to do with. Thank you Dr. Grace for sharing testimonies, your ministry and love for all God's Women. I thank you and my pastor for allowing me to teach this book and (soon-)"The Band-Aid Bond" in my church. Every woman holding the thought of having a relationship must read this book, you really don't know who you are dating until it's too late.

I read most of Johnstone's work and this one is particularly good. A fast moving story with lots of action. And Frank is teamed up with his son again and a gun slinging female. Great read.

This book takes you on a journey. Through its poetic, inspiring words, the reader will find himself transported to another level... a realm beyond the ordinary. Combining photographs and philosophy, Bond compels his listeners to realize just how precarious our contemporary world, beleaguered with technological paraphernalia, is on the verge of destroying our capacity for intimacy.

Bold and beautiful, written in an ancient style of thinking!

This totally unique writing style is an experience that brings the meaning of human existence into a clear and meaningful perspective. Mr. Bond channels his ideas on Tai Chi with poetic grace and delivers a 'tour de force' rendition of Chinese thought as it applies to our Western outlook on social interelations and the human experience. It is hard to imagine that just by reading this book a "high" could be experienced. But guess what? Bond's stylish book is a natural evolution from his magical television series seen on PBS and throughout Europe on the UPC network.

Great African American Plays

This is a good book to have in your theater library (especially for black actors/thespians). There are some great contemporary pieces and monologues (especially for Black men). I have always been supportive of The Theodore Award winning plays. The characters are real and the language is rich. The writing is great. Most of the plays are short, so these plays would be good for a burgeoning African American theater company or ensemble to produce.

Highly recommended for any theater library

Since the early part of the 20th century, Chicago has been a national leader in the production of black theater. There are currently six black companies, and black productions are regularly featured at the three Tony Award-winning regional theater companies.

Theodore Ward (1902 - 1983) mentored and encouraged many aspiring dramatists in Chicago from 1968 until his death. To honor Ward, and to aid black playwrights in the development and production of scripts, Columbia College Chicago established the Theodore Ward Prize for African American Playwriting in 1985. Only full-length plays addressing the African American are considered, and the playwright must be of African American descent. Since one of the goals is to uncover and identify new works, scripts which have received professional production are not eligible.

This anthology of prize-winning plays is the first in a series to be published every three years. Compiled and edited by Chuck Smith (currently Resident Director at Chicago's Goodman Theater, and affiliated with the prize for fifteen years) it presents seven plays spanning nearly two decades, with diverse subject matter and treatments. Christopher Moore's "The Last Season" (First Prize 1987-88) immerses us in the final days of the Negro Leagues. The most recent offering, Shepsu Aakhu's "Kiwi Black" ( First Prize 2001-02) tells the story of adolescent son coming of age under the watchful eye of a tough-love father.

But my synopses can't possibly do these scripts justice. Highly recommended for any theater library!

This book (in English) was one of the favorites of my best friend's little girl for years, and the simple premise of "be careful what you get yourself into" amuses even my grown friends. The story of the mouse who wants a cookie (which requires a glass of milk, which calls for ...) and can't stop there, is a familiar plot presented in a fresh way with fun illustrations. The Spanish translation has a very natural feel. I was delighted to find this translation, as I had told my boyfriend (now my husband) about it on an early date, and ever after he persisted in asking, "How did that story go? The one about the little mouse?" whenever I tried to get him to stop being fresh. :) A delightful book.
----------

Finally, someone has the courage and character to talk about the roller coaster rides that today's women have been on. This book will take you on an emotional journey page by page. It made me laugh and cry as I recalled a few of these unforgetable experiences myself. These poems will definitely speak to most women. You may not personally relate to all of the topics, BUT you certainly have that "girl friend" or "guy friend" that can. PLEASE SHARE THIS BOOK with EVERYONE... It's AWESOME!!!

Music is powerful; it can bring joy, laughter, sadness, and most importantly, change. "Sing for Freedom: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement Through Its Songs" is a look at music and its impact on the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Packed with sheet music, lyrics, and information on various major songs and how they pushed progress in history, "Sing for Freedom" is enhanced with black and white photographs. A fresh perspective on the period, "Sing for Freedom" is highly recommended for community library black studies and music collections.

Anyone interested in promoting social justice through song needs this book, and at all times a spare one stuck in the guitar case or piano bench because you'll want to pass it on to others. It contains 115 songs (mostly melody lines and guitar chords); 135 crisply reproduced documentary photos from the civil rights movement and dozens of first-hand accounts from people who were there. In many cases, the writer, arranger or discoverer of the song provides the background notes. There is a companion CD by Folkways records with the same name that contains about 1/5 of the songs; it makes a nice set. Every library should have this book - what a vital way to teach history! Editors Guy and Candy Carawan are resident musicians at the Highlander Center and were in the center leading the music at many of the events discussed.

This book is a wonderful introduction to the rain forest and poison dart frogs for children. The story takes you through the life of a strawberry poison dart frog (my daughter Jessie's favorite frog) from egg to adult. The story is excellent and the pictures are fantastic! I have been to La Selva twice so I can say that the story and pictures are realistic. A picture quiz at the end of the book will keep your eyes open for other rain forest wildlife living in the pictures of this wonderful book. I instruct environmental education programs and use this book often. Enjoy!

Sons of Yocahu is a powerful narrative. The historical background has clearly been well-researched, but don't expect this story to read like a textbook! The plot moves quickly, drawing you in. The characters are deep and human to the core; you'll find yourself moved with love, pity, and compassion by their plights.

When you sit down to read this novel, you'll find yourself unable to put it down. Be forewarned that you should probably have a box of tissues nearby!

Best Read of the Year

Review Date: 2007-01-23
I found the story--the narrative--riveting for its own sake. I was also appropriately horrified by the metaphor. This is a "man's inhumanity to man" story based on the worst manifestation of egomania gone mad. Because the tale is a cautionary fable, it informs, once again, that brutality thrives when the golden rule is revoked; trumped by racism.

If it were "only a story," it would still be impossible to put down. But it is more than a story. It is a fictionalized version of a tragically true story. As in all gripping sagas, there is goodness, nobility, and triumphant kindness. But don't expect Bond to be gentle with her reader. I am still haunted by the wanton atrocities of the invaders. Yet, this is why we read. Information and inspiration are the opposites of ignorance and prejudice. This was one of the most memorable books I read last year

I throughly enjoyed this book. The female character is at first hard to like, but then you come to understand her a bit more. She is very real. This book deals with real issues that everyone faces. The male character is very nice, he is your good guy that tries to help the female character and ends up realizing that he can't change her only God can. This book is worth your time. Enjoy!
