I found this book a great read. It covered little things not usually included in space books like what the astronauts heartrates got to during critical manoevers. I would recommend it to anyone interested in space.

This is one of the few good books that there is now, in my opinion, about space flight. Not only does it focus on every single detail of the american space program, but it also focuses on the russian space program. Have you ever wondered about just what happened after that orbit or just when that launch was? Just grab HEROES IN SPACE:FROM GAGARIN TO CHALLENGER to find out. This book is, in my opinion, one of the best books available on space flight right now.

Since I am just learning about the investment world I have read ten books so far about how to invest, where to invest, how much one should invest, and so on. "How To Invest The Smart Way" by Stephen Littauer is the best investment book that I have read. Since it covers Stocks, Bonds, and Mutual Funds it covers hows to invest in each and what to watch out for in a very concise manner. I borrowed this book from our local library and I hope to purchase it in order to have it as a resource book for future use. Of the ten books that I have read so far this is the only one that I have selected to put into my own library. So if you want to learn the basics about investing that is in a clear, concise, and understandable language then select this book.

Even though I'm not from the Urbana area, I found this book to be very enjoyable. I liked the idea of 150 different stories that were told. Many of them were very interesting. I would definitely recommend this book and hope that the author, Tom Kacich, will write future books. I thought his insight into the stories was very informative.

Cool book!

I consider myself to be an avid reader and I like the books I read to be interesting and easy to read. I found that Hot Type by Tom Kacich is the best of both worlds for me - the stories come from Champaign and Urbana in Illinois but they could easily be from any town in this country. The stories in the book are compelling and the format of the book allows the reader to read a few stories at a time or the entire book at once. Mr. Kacich has done a fine job researching the stories and the photos are interesting, too. Hot Type is not just a book for people from Illinois but a must for all avid readers!

I loved Having Faith- Faith and Sawyer's friends into lovers story is passionate and loving and warm and built on such depth- you really get to know the characters and like them immensely!Sex is steamy in this one as is the hallmark of Ms. Delinsky!

The Stephanie Bond one is cute- our hero has a major case of Peter Pan complex- former jock is settling down and being a real businessman for the first time in his life to win the love a woman he wants so much....This was orignally one of the "Sweet Talkin' Guys" books. The first time they have sex is amazing! THE HEAT COMES right off the page! WOW!

FAITH / IT TAKES A REBEL - 2 AWESOMEREADS!!!

FAITH is basically a best friends turn lover type story. Two lawyers who has been friends forever but were married to other people. Being together never occured to them until they eventually got divorced with their partners, bumped into each other during a case and then the chemistry took off. Barbara Delinsky doesn't do the hottest love scenes and her heroes are not as alpha as Jayne Ann Krentz or Linda Howard, but the stories are still written well enough be a good emotional read.

IT TAKES A REBEL is my first Stephanie bond book and it won't be my last. I loved her writing style. This book was a GREAT romantic comedy. About a very laid back guy from a small advertising firm who lands a big advertisng account from an exclusive department store. He falls in lust with the owners daughter who also happens to be VP of Marketing and the fight is on between the laid back jock and the no-nonsense boss-woman. I loved this book and will also look for more Stephanie Bond books in the future. There was this character I just couldn't get enough of. She was a delivery woman who walked off the street to deliver a sandwich, took one look at the hero, decided that the hero needed a secretary whether he wanted one or not, he was going to get one, HER! Never mind he can't pay her, she'll improvise! I loved this character, she was like the heroe's fairy god mother and helped him out throughout the story. He of course eventually "officially hired her" and paid her, lol!

I highly recommend both stories. What a great find!

Philip Lisa the Driving Force
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-20
Philip Lisa is the driving force behind this book. I have met him personally. He is a man of great integrity and his knowledge on the subject of James Bond is boundless. He is one of a handful of people in the world that is truly a James Bond authority.

This book covers each of the Broccoli / United Artists James Bond films. These are the official films. The book gives objective information on each title written with editorial doses of interest which maintains a consistency of perspective from cover to cover. There are no favorites in the traditional sense. The authors know very well that no filmmaker or group of filmmakers ever intentionally makes an inferior motion picture. It is all a matter of how well the filmmakers combine their efforts and produce a finished product. The focus of the book is the filmmaking, not hype or glamour. The Bond films have always maintained a high ideal of production standards and this book examines that process.

Besides the filmmaking this book also examines the James Bond phenomena from product merchandising (including books, toys, music, videos, games, etc.) to the cultural impact of Ian Fleming's hero. It even covers such offshoots such as the animated TV series "James Bond Jr." The book also contains key interviews with members of the acting and production crews. It is also profusely and beautifully illustrated with many colour photographs.

I highly recommend this book. And take from me, Philip Lisa is more than just a contributor on this publication. Being the consummate professional he never told me who wrote what, but having read this book several times I think I can. Just don't ask me. James who?

The Definitive Treatise on the James Bond Film Series

Review Date: 2001-03-04
This is the best book concentrating on the James Bond films series and the phenomena it created. Written with great enlightenment, gusto and inspiration this an excellent accomplishment on the subject. What is very good about this informative work is that the two authors never critique the films in a unfavorable manner. If something in a film did not go over well, they give us their explanation of what possibly went wrong and suggest other avenues that could have been taken. There are many unique color and black & white photographs illustrating this book. It also covers James Bond Collecting and even the James Bond Jr. cartoon TV series. It is very well written and I highly recommend it.

A fresh idea for solving ongoing social problems

Review Date: 2001-04-22
I found this to be a unique, clever, and thought-provoking book. At first, the central idea of the book seems downright zany - using market forces, in the form of government-issued bonds, to harness creative self-interest to solve social problems like crime or unemployment. However, Horesh argues his case in a clear and compelling manner and I was left wondering - can it work? I would certainly like to see our governments take up the challenge........

New movie and book well worth it.....

I am writing this having just returned from the new motion picture release. I read the book probably 35 years ago and as a young man, was quite impressed by the style and yes, the unmitigated violence. I enjoyed it thouroughly... I was surprised that the motion picture actually included the excruciating torture scene involving Bond and Le Chifre. The main characters are well drawn and intriguing. Casino scenes are tense and hold your attention. Overall, this first book in the bond series holds your interest and makes you want more. And history shows this is exactly what happened with the series.

Most Insightful of Fleming's Bond Novels
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-20
This is not only Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel but one of his best. It is richly textured, well written, clearly defines the Bond character and has survived not only as good literature but as a great period piece of the 50s. It also gives us a glimpse of the often unseen smoke filled cocktailed night life found Europe's plush casinos of that era. Clearly, James Bond is worldly character that lives and breaths in this unseen world described by Ian Fleming in this novel. James Bond can easily adapt to any locale or situation, size it up and endure. He is both innovative and resourceful and he must rely on his talents and instincts to survive. This novel gives us some insight into Fleming's hero concerning his motivations as a blunt civil servant of his country and as a living and breathing man perhaps more here than in subsequent novels. This is a very good Bond novel. The cover depicts the new James Bond seen in the film which pays homage perhaps better than any other Bond film to Fleming's complex character.

THE expert's guide to the world of 007!

Review Date: 2000-06-12
THE JAMES BOND BEDSIDE COMPANION is an apt title because for any true James Bond fans this indispensible guide to the world of 007 will not travel far beyond your night stand. It's a compusivlely fun read. What author Benson had done was take the best of sources like Kingsley Amis' JAMES BOND DOSSIER (another out-of-print classic), John Pearson's JAMES BOND-THE AUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY OF 007, and John Brosnan's JAMES BOND IN THE CINEMA, and re-assembled them here with his own personal stamp. It's all here: a consise history of the novels, films, and world wide James Bond phenomenom , an analysis of the James Bond literary character, complete reviews of both Ian Fleming's and John Garner's novels and, of course, the movies. The book lacks the many photos from the Bond films but thats the key to its appeal- It's a pure literary compedium for the James Bond fan new and old alike, not a flashy celebration. With Benson's new found fame as an acclaimed James Bond novelist, I hope this book gets back in print and updated with speed of an Astin Martin.

Now pay attention 007 !

This is by far the most comcomprehensive look at Ian Fleming 's spy with a license to kill. It contains much background into the Fleming books ,and honest reviews of the movies.A bible for any die hard Bond fans. Although outdated ,( the last movie reviewed is Moonraker) it is still a tour de force. I received my copy as a Christmas gift in the Mid 80's , and literally wore it out . A hard book to find , but the treasure is worth the hunt.Mr. Gardner left no stone unturned in researching this book.

A Bit of Literary Nostalgia devoted to Ian Fleming's Creation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-22
There are two books I find to be superior on the subject of examining Ian Fleming's James Bond novels and short stories. The first and definitive is "Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies for Ian Fleming's Bond Stories" by John Griswold. It is an objective research and analysis of the highest order of Ian Fleming's total literary output that he devoted to his fictional hero who operated and existed in a factual and reality based world shaped for his hero's existence. The second book is Kingsley Amis' THE JAMES BOND DOSSIER, which for me was the first serious look of why many people were so enamored by Ian Fleming's James Bond books. Kingsley Amis states in the Preface to his THE JAMES BOND DOSSIER that he too was an Ian Fleming fan and that his book was a result of "a modest article of about 5,000 words" that grew into the essay that became his book. It is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining book subjectively examined in segregated elements of Fleming's books broken down into chapters by Amis. Written during the same era as O.F. Snelliing's 007 JAMES BOND: A REPORT, Kingsley Amis' book remains an endearing bit of literary nostalgia devoted to Ian Fleming's creation.

An Excellent Study: Dissecting James Bond

Review Date: 2002-07-08
This book is very good to read after you have freshly finished the Ian Fleming's original 'James Bond' books (avaliable in a new edition from Viking and Penguin: order them now!). It allows readers to take a peak into the aspects of Bond they might have missed whilst reading. Amis has taken Fleming's original facts, ellaborated, and made his own humourous, sketchy, and facinating observations. As a literary master himself, and a long-time admirer of what he calls 'the Fleming affect', Amis expertly takes apart, not just the world, but the man, James Bond. Fleming veiwed the manuscript of this book shortly before he died, and approved every part save minor quibles of what James Bond ate, drove or drank.
As stated earlier, Amis was himself a bond-fan, and said to Fleming once: "Mr Fleming, You are the only author whom I can say 'I have read all your books, and have enjoyed them thouroughly'". A due credit.

What an incredible book - I count it among my favorite. It has touched my life in so many ways. I bought it to find the relationship I desired between me and my daughter but it also has deepened my relationships with my mother and two sisters, my adult women friends, etc. I now understand so many of the emotions I felt and that they are normal and how to focus them. I have been given new insights into how my own mother feels and I now understand so much of my relationship with her. The best reward is a deep relationship with my 14-year-old, something any mother of a teenage daughter would wish for. Every woman deserves this book and the benefits it brings!
