Amazing tales

This book tells the story of Dr. William Karesh, a wildlife veterinarian. Karesh tells us about his early interest in wild animals, and how he came to study veterinary science in graduate school. Following his studies, he used his skills working for zoos and the Wildlife Conservation Society. Now he spends much of his time traveling around the world studying the habits and health of various wild creatures. Highlights of Karesh's stories include nursing an injured okapi back to health, and chasing peccaries through the Peruvian forests. The best tale of all, however, has to be that of the time he was high in a tree, attempting to stare down a jaguar who thought he smelled like a nice hunk of meat. The point of the book is not all light-hearted stories, however. Karesh provides us with some important points to ponder about wildlife conservation and the future of the planet.

Books by vets are usually very interesting and concern more common animals. This book is different as Dr. Karesh only works with wild animals and puts his life on the line many times during the year.

It is always interesting to discover how a person got into his line of work and this story is no exception. Though he loved animals from birth (almost), being a vet was furtherest from his mind.

This is a good read and highly recommended.

I listened to this book on audio tape, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't realize a vet could enjoy his life so much. Each illness was an adventure, and some were quite dangerous. He obviously loves his work, and won't let anything stand in his way. His stories were humorous and interesting, and just technical enough to appreciate his vast medical knowledge. This book was a pleasure to listen to, and I recommend it highly.

This excellent book is highly commended to anyone who is truly serious about investing. Peter Hupalo is a consultant and frequent columnist on money and entrepreneurship matters. With clear and convincing data to support him, Mr. Hupalo debunks many of the myths Wall Street pushes on the investing public. Author demonstrates the futility of trying to "beat the market", whether through stock picking and market timing or by following mutual funds that have shown high levels of performance in the past. After he makes a convincing case for trying to meet, rather than beat the market. Thus, Mr. Hupalo advocates investing in a diversified basket of mutual funds. The chapter on investing during retirement is particularly insightful.

Whether or not one ultimately agrees with Mr. Hupalo's point of view, "Becoming An Investor: Building Wealth By Investing In Stocks, Bonds, And Mutual Funds" is a book, which deserves attention. Anyone wishing to base his/her investment decisions on solid methodology needs to read this book. You will have a much clearer understanding of markets, and your investment decisions will be firmly rooted in proven soil.

I highly recommend this book for everyone.

A diamond in the rough!

Only available in paperback, no fancy artwork on the cover, no glowing reviews by a big time newspaper publisher, no forward by a prestigious luminary, even the editing is second rate. In a word, this is a rough book.

However, when it comes to content, this book is loaded as the author does not include a lot of fluff or selfish stories about himself. However, the author is obviously very well read, because he includes numerous references to plently of other investing books. Some may conclude it's a value investing book, but growth investing is covered as well.

So, what this book presents is a careful and comprehensive distillation of just about everything commonly available on the subject of investing. Also included are numerous clever stories which illustrate important investment truths and strategies and a recognition that a lot of what the mass media presents is almost worthless for somebody wishing to become an investor.

A good place to begin learning how to manage your money

Hupalo gives you simple (good) advice to manage your money.

The book is very balanced and it is aimed mainly to the educated general public. You will need only some simple algebra to understand his few valuation formulas.

He writes basically about common stocks and has a chapter discussing bonds. But do not expect market timing methods. It is more directed to Investing than to Trading.

Conclusion: A good place to begin learning how to manage your money. To good sense people.

Wesley Britton has written an original. In "Beyond Bond," he offers pithy insights on both fictional and real espionage, seamlessly blending discussions of movies, literature, and television. Britton has a fine spy eye, as he shows how few "degrees of separation" there are between fact and fiction. Lucid and intelligent, this is a must-read.

I get many spy books across my desk but Dr. Britton's is outstanding in the field and he has brought exhaustive research to a blend of the real and fictional. Fascinating reading!

Just finished Wes Britton's Beyond Bond. What a fantastic compendium of spy-detective related knowledge! A veritable reference book of interconnected facts about the espionage genre and a great read. Included in the tome is a chronological outline of spy fiction through out the past 100 years. Anyone who thinks James Bond was the first; but wonders where he came from needs to read this book. The best part of the book for me was understanding how life imitates art and vice versa. The actual historical events of the times many times informs art and it's great to see how that happens in this book.

Recommended to anyone who wants a greater understanding of the espionage genre; while specific enough to pique anyone's interest enough to dig further. Enjoy.

manages to cram more interesting detail about spies into a book than one
would think possible. I have been closely associated musically with the
film spy movement, James Bond Theme, The Prisoner and others, for more than
40 years and this book proves how little I knew. Buy it and enjoy. Vic

An unforgettable war novel

Review Date: 2001-01-04
Jack Bilello's "Bonds of War" is an unforgettable war novel. The author has clearly done his homework, weaving his story around the historical events of World War II and Vietnam. The ordeal of the protagonsist (Jessie VonTwelves) is told in a gripping narrative that had me mesmorized. The unfortunate events of the U.S.S. Juneau, which lost all but ten of the 700 men aboard during a conflict in the Guadalcanal, is one of the most moving accounts of war you'll ever read. Sadly, like much of World War II, too many of us have forgotten or (dare I say it) never heard of the events that our brave soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice for. Mr. Bilello ensures you will never forget in this extraordinary book. Alternatively sad, moving, and even laugh-out-loud funny, the book moves back and forth in time with great ease. Not an easy feat in fiction-writing, but done with great plotting and wonderful attention to detail in this book. The ending is both satisfying and carefully planned as we see how father and son come to grips with their special bond, their separate but similar circumstances of two of America's wars. The characters stayed with me long after the book was placed back on my shelf. I applaude Mr. Bilello's impressive, moving, and wonderful book and hope others will find, and read, this important story of war, love, and family.

Bonds of War masterfully unveils war's effect on survivors

Review Date: 1998-11-03
Jack Bilello's Bonds of War presents fictionalized accounts of two true events that occurred in World War II and Vietnam. The story deals with the experiences of one of just ten survivors of the Juneau, a World War II cruiser that was torpedoed during the battle of Guadalcanal, and his son who fought in the Vietnam war. The descriptions of the battle sequences and their aftermath are gripping. But this is more than a war novel. The author does a masterful job of bringing the characters to life by describing their love, sex, and other experiences both during and after each war. Most importantly, the author exposes the psychological damage of the war experience and how, in this case, it affects the relationship between father and son. The story is at times very amusing and at other times tragic, but always well written and easy flowing. This book will certainly appeal to war novel aficionados, but anyone who likes a good, well-written story that deals with the tragedy of war will also be attracted to it. Bonds of War is an example of excellent American literature.

Highly recommended. I read these as a little girl when they were first published. These tales of friendship and love are timeless and will warm the heart of kids of any age ;). Olga's adventures with her friends are funny and interesting. Parents may have to explain a few terms to kids ("Dad, what's a pig-in-a-blanket?") but what a great way to bond with your kid! The illustrations are beautiful and expressive.

I randomly picked this book off a library shelf as something to help a boring afternoon pass by, and was surprised at how enthralling it was. I was surprised to learn this title was out of print, because the colorful palette of characters and their problems are so thought provoking that I wished to own the book myself. Nancy Bond introduces the two families of the Ibbetsons and the Prines who are forced together when the divorced Prine mother Valerie maries the widowed Ibbetson father Edward. Their children must accept eachother and they all must learn how to get along as a family, parents included. But that is not the point of the book, that is merely one of the layers that this book takes you to. Valerie is an archaeologist who is excavating the ruins of a Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall in the Northumbria region of England, and that is why all of the family must move to Wintergap, a gloomy house built in the harsh climate of northern Britain. Penelope, the only Ibbetson daughter is the main character, and she is the first to sense the dark history of the house. I could go into deep details through the multiple layered plot leading to a horrible accident but that would ruin the story. The suspense makes you keep reading to find out how everything turns out. The most interesting part of the story in my opinion is the friendship that forms between Penelope and a local farmer boy whose family has been feuding with the previous residents of Wintergap, where Penelope lives, and despite her families warnings to stay away from the troublesome Robsons, Penelope must learn how to bring back together the divided land, and somehow make amends. This is a must read for children ages thirteen through adult as it is thought provoking, suspenseful and full of historical accuracy and astonishing details, but because of some minor language issues I wouldn't reccomend it for children under thirteen.

Dorthy Bond has compiled a huge collection of embroidery stitches she's seen used in crazy quilts. She assumes you can learn how to do the stitches from other sources, although she provides a simple drawing of the steps for each basic stitch. The joy of this book is the wealth of combinations of those basic stitches. No other book on crazy quilt embroidery has offered me the same trigger to creativity that this book provides. It is spiral bound, ensuring that it will lie flat while you work from it. A great collection at a truly bargain price.

Crazy Quilt Stitches" is a comprehensive survey of stitch combinations for crazy quilt embellishment. The easy-to-lay-flat spiral binding is a plus for convenience. A beginner might need to supplement their knowledge on how to execute the basic stitches, but from there you have an excellent inspiration for the variations in stitches so prized by the Victorian crazy quilters. My 4 1/5 year old is crazy about space so I bought this book for him. The pictures are larger than life with tremendous clarity. The text is easy to read and understand, although I would say the text is aimed more at 7 - 10 years old. My 4 1/5 year old seems to understand most of the text as I review it with him and re-explain it. The book is well organized starting with the planets in our solar system, then moving to the galaxies, the life and death of stars, and space exploration. This is an excellent beginning space book for children or adults who want a quick overview of the solar system and galaxies.

Director John Glen tells of his experience with the James Bond film series strait up. At the helm of five of the films as director Glen pulls no punches and offers great insight into the creative efforts of the whole Bond film team. This is a great book and even more so if you are a James Bond fan. I really like this book. There is really no gloss here. This is really about what went into making these films while Albert R. Broccoli was still alive and producing them. I highly recommend this book.

John Glen directed the five 007 films which basically span the entire decade of the 1980s: For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights, and License to Kill. He was also involved with previous 007 films such as Moonraker, The Spy Who Loved Me, and numerous other British films going back to the 60s. This book is a collection of behind the scenes stories from the making of Glen's films, but with special emphasis on the Bond films. Most Bond fans know the plot details inside and out, so what makes this book interesting is the story and script development, shooting location stories, and cast and crew details. The only downside to the book is I wish there was MORE of everything...more stories, more photos, etc. This is a highly entertaining book if you are a 007 fan, particularly from the Roger Moore - Timothy Dalton era.

As a longtime James Bond fan, I picked up this book in New York recently. The author David Giammarco is a journalist who has done an extraordinary job documenting the 007 films, starting from Ian Fleming's literary conception to how the film legacy took flight. The author - whose keen knowledge is clearly evident - takes the readers up close and personal with all the Bond actors, filmmakers, and production talent with his in-depth interviews which detail so many great stories and little-known anecdotes throughout the entire film history. Quite an exhaustive and comprehensive effort! Fun to read and many great pictures. Among the positive recommendations on the back cover are from Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan, so I knew this would be worth reading. And they were 100% right! A brilliant film companion book!

Amazing! I've been a fan of the Bond films for over 20 years, and this is the first book that has brought together everyone's first-hand accounts. Almost every Bond book I've been disappointed with because they were written by arm-chair quarterbacks, but David Giammarco is a journalist who has been a part of the 007 world, spent time with most of the Bond particpants, and can truly write what it is like to be on set and behind the scenes. It is very well-written, with many interesting facts and stories that even I'VE never heard before! His interviews with Roger Moore were quite amusing, and reading Sean Connery tell his version of Bond-mania was very fascinating. Getting to hear Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby's side of the story was also quite interesting. It was also great to see how well Mr. Giammarco showcased Pierce Brosnan's contributions to the series. Mr. Brosnan has been vastly underrrated in the media, but this book gives us far more insight into the man and pays him his due rewards (after all, we all know Pierce is the best Bond since Connery!!!) The author and Pierce seems to have a really good relationship, and perhaps that why the normally reticent Mr. Brosnan opens up as much as he does.
Plus, you can't beat hearing all the many great stories from the "classic" Bond directors like Guy Hamilton and Peter Hunt, Ken Adam (his account of Connery almost being eaten by a shark during the shooting of Thunderball was quite funny)as well as the many Bond Girls, Villains, cast and crew. I liked what Desmond Lewelyn told the author and I learned a whole new side about lovable old Q.
Also, the contributions to the book from Hugh Hefner, Kevin Costner, Harison Ford, and that infamous CIA spook E. Howard Hunt were quite fascinating and take this book to a whole new dimension than those other Bond books.

It's clear Mr.Giammarco knows the Bond legacy inside and out and his access to everyone is an invaluable resource for us Bond aficionados. I've been waiting a long time for a book like this - a really fun read. I highly recommend it. No Bond fan will be disappointed!!!

David Giammarco says he's a Bond fan. Lot's of people say they are something, but David Giammarco is what he says. This guy loves Bond and he lets it all hang out in this book.

For Your Eyes Only:Behind The Scenes of the James Bond Films is exactly what it sayd it is. It's full of behind the scenes information for all 20 movies from Dr.No to Die Another Day. There are interviews with people who worked on the films. David talks to directors, producers, writers, actors, and anybody and everybody who worked on the films.

There is an overview of each film and then the interviews. The interviews are your basic Q&A format. David interviews anybody and everybody that had to do anything with the films.

I love the interviews with the guys who played Bond. They all talk about the love they had for the films and the fun they had making them. They give you their perspectives on the movies and the things done in the movies.

The interviews with the Bond girls are fantastic. Some of the most beautiful woman to ever live have been Bond girls. From Ursulla Andress to Halle Berry you have interviews with most of them. They are all awesome ladies who enjoyed the pictures and love the place they have in pop culture because of it.

If your a Bond fan you have to pick this one. I doubt you'll have a question that this book can't answer. I've been a Bond fan for over 15 years and this is the most informative Bond book I've ever seen. You won't regret buying this one.

Excellent buy for any fan of the 007 films

If your a fan of the James Bond films and you want to know everything about the films than this is the book you have to buy. This book gives a great behind the scene look at the films and at the actors who portrayed the suave secret agent. Each actor is interviewed by the author, and share there point of view on Bond. Also each movie is featured and discussed. I think this book is very fun and a great read. I really enjoyed the authors style of writing and hope he writes a book like this about the Bond novels in the future.
