Mrs. New has my vote. Her first book, written about Texas long before I was born, is a fascinating read. It is obvious she has researched this material for many years while writing in a manner that one would think she had published many books before! a must read

If you can figure out who was the murderer, you are a better sleuth than I am! Wonderfully crafted murder mystery. Margaret Snyder New is a great storyteller in the true tradition of the old Texas cowboys. I loved this poignant, intriguing novel. Would love to see the movie!

There is perhaps no medical specialty that has more misconceptions, "wives tales" and variation than Obstetrics. Williams Obstetrics is more exhaustively comprehensive than any other text for general Obstetrics. Williams has long prided itself on presenting "evidence-based medicine" - separating the wives tales from medical knowledge obtained from published studies from peer-reviewed journals. Perhaps there are those who prefer their Obstetrics with a little voodoo. For those who want to know the most up-to-date scientifically based Obstetrics, Williams is your book!

I like it so much, I have 4 copies

As a person who switches between the player and Game Master roles, I know the value of having multiple copies of the basic rules. While my first copy of this book is in a binder with the pages in sheet protectors, two of the other three are in very good condition, and I don't know the current condition of the 4th copy which is currently on loan to a friend. I took advantage of Padwolf Publishing's 3 for the price of 2 deal because I wanted to garned local interest.

Took me a while to decide I actually wanted to purchase this game, I'd glanced through the only copy at a local hobby shop a few times, and after a couple of months decided to buy it. Like other reviewers, I was pulled into the world. Sure, I wanted to know the rules, but I also wanted to read the whole book.

One thing I get tired off RPGs doing is kissing human butt. I do play humans in RPGs, but I prefer not to, the whole reason I'm playing an RPG is to be something I'm not. So, that was a good selling point: NO HUMANS.

Aside from a few editting flaws, there's nothing really wrong with this book.

I also like that it doesn't suffer from "cookie-cutter character types" i.e. Classes, or other arbitrary RPG standbys like Alignment and power levels. Using experience points as skill points? Brilliant! I HATE "sitting" numbers in RPGs. Granted, sometimes, even in a system like this you'll have sitting numbers, but not ones that get arbitarily large forever.

Amazing isn't strong enough

As a long time RPG'er, I was a little skeptical of World Tree and the whole anthro thing in general. Thank goodness I had a couple hours I needed to kill at a con. I was sucked into the setting, a very vivid, alive one. The people, the places! This isn't some quasi-medival clone game. The World Tree setting is refreshingly unique and original. If you enjoy role-playing - or are just looking for a really good read involving history, politics and an alien world - buy this book!

While there is entirely enough originality and detail in the book to satisfy any world-building enthusiast, and an excellent game system as well, it's worth pointhing out that the authors are (deliberately) very light on small-area specifics, and have only a brief bestiary. It's clear they've come up with a lot more than is documented here, and I'd be interested in seeing their other notes; particularly the Kazorm, who are mentioned in passing several times but never described in any detail, besides being sentient and vaguely peaceful.

A game which is far more

To be blunt, this is a game which is more then a game, for it is a deep, involved, and very, very beautiful world. This was not something that was slung together in a weekend for the sole purpose of making money. This is something that has taken the talents of many people from gamers to beautiful artists who have all left their touch in this game. Although at first the instructions seem simple, you realize how deep and well rounded they are. The old term 'A minute to learn, a lifetime to master' somes to mind.
On a side note, I have spoken to the creators of this, and they constantly ask for input and advice how to make it better. This shows how much they truly love this game. If you are a gamer, looking for a world to love, look no forther.

Another World

Review Date: 2002-11-25
"World Tree" is a thoroughly developed fantasy world. There are cities on branches miles wide and thousands of miles long, with people looking down into space and trading with flying ships. Magic is so common that even children use it, and you learn how it's used in ordinary life and not just adventuring. The races aren't just dog-men, otter-men, etc. -- they have unique customs, personalities, clothing, and architecture. Metal is rare, so wood and bone tools have become extremely advanced. Meddling gods look down from the sky.

The book's first hundred pages suck you in and make you want to play in this world, even before you see the rules and huge magic list. There are explanatory notes and one-page stories throughout the book written from the characters' perspective; these are useful and often funny. Even if you're not a gamer, it's worth reading. Writers can learn from this great example of world-building.

The rules are fairly simple, since most rolls are (Stat + Skill + d20) versus some number, though filling out a character sheet can take a long time due to the variety of spells and skills and the odd experience point system. The spells explore all combinations of the 7 magic Verbs and 12 Nouns (e.g. "Change" + "Flesh" = shapeshifting) and let you do many things in multiple ways. There are eight fully playable races with different specialties from the fast, shape-changing Orren with "species-wide ADD" to the physically puny but immortal and magically-gifted Zi Ri, to the armored insect Herethroy who use huge three-handed swords.

This is no generic medieval game with elves and dungeons; it's a complete world. Beware when reading, as I've seen people forget what time it is and where they are!

It even includes a chapter on other books about chocolate, including fiction, which is the only thing this book is not. In that realm, Bloom and I recommend BITTERSWEET JOURNEY, A Modestly Erotic Novel of Love, Longing & Chocolate.

Chapters detail his statistical performance, his controversial public image, and the accusations of steroid use which cloud his reputation today. An intriguing coverage.

A fine, gut tale of authentic character and moral struggle
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-05
Matt Bloom has created not only a tale of moral struggle, but has evoked disturbingly real, multi-faceted characters that draw one in not by
contrived heroism or allegory, but by unflinching attention to gut realism. He does not sweeten his characters or scenarios to make them artificially sympathetic, but displays a finely honed sensitivity and courage to face and evoke the emptiness and search for authenticity of his range of characters and experience. This is all accomplished with the skill and depth possessed only by a true writer, one who yearns to and succeeds at creating new and genuine realities.

I not only had the pleasure of watching Matt immerse himself in disparate lifestyles in order to feed his writing over the years, but I boxed lots of rounds with him. It is an honor to have seen him turn his cultivated, unpretentious talent, his hours of training and taking (and slipping - he's really good in the ring) punches, and his uncompromised immersion into life, and turn them into literature that is both memorably fine and a pleasure to experience. Highly recommended.

A fresh voice on a familiar theme

I just can't resist checking out fresh young voices whose books deal with New York City sleaze and whose main characters are named Nick.

Nick is a young bartender in a working class bar in the west 40's. He is a boxer who is training for his big fight. Naturally, the local mob figures want him to throw the fight. His best friend, Jimmy, is a loser who patronizes massage and porn parlors, drinks too much, and always is trying schemes that don't work. The author uses simple words but yet gets into the heart and soul of the characters. I felt their reality as they moved about in their world, breathed the dust on the West Side Highway, smelled the beer in the bar, felt the mugginess of the summer heat wave. More characterization than story, but I still couldn't stop reading. A good first novel and an author to watch. Recommended.

A compelling, strong story

Review Date: 1998-07-31
In Blue Paradise, Matt Bloom creates a vivid landscape of stragglers and ragged souls - but you could never call them losers, for one of Bloom's gifts as a writer is that his characters live within the real world, where hope is always a choice, for those who reach for it.

This novel is full of great characters populating a world the reader can see, hear and almost touch. It's a difficult, painful world - one might even say it's sordid in many ways, but I have to say that the author's sympathy and understanding,not to be confused with sentimentality, for his characters brings a strong sense of realism and complexity to this work.

Of course, it's fundamentally a great story, with a good dose of suspense and an ending that, quite frankly, gives me goosebumps.

I do like PC Bedtime Stories but that book is clearly directed at adults and is frankly, not in favor of PC.

This book is great because it compiles traditional stories from different cultures and shows that girls don't have to change for others, don't have to wait for a man to do something, can still be feminine and want love and respect and neither is exclusive to the other.

Its not just for young girls!

I just love this book. And I was lucky enough to get a first edition in good shape. I haven't read folk-tales since I was a kid, and only just started because I needed to find one for a graduate class I am taking. These bite-size stories are perfect for bedtime reading because I can read a whole story and call it quits. No cliffhangers. And not only are the stories beautifully written, but they all portray the woman as being valuable for reasons other than beauty. Although this book is subtitled "feminist folk tales from around the world," I do not believe the book is just for young girls. Boys too should hear stories of powerful, smart women. In fact, they would probably be more interested in these stories than Cinderella and sleeping beauty.

My Favorite Stories!

I love this book. Ever since a family friend gave it to me several years ago, I often go back and read the stories over and over again because they are so enchanting. For once, the female characters balance out with the usual "heroic" male counterparts; No damsels in distress or cunning and villainous old hags here. The Maid of the North is not, however, preachy or boring in its feminism, but it subtley sends the message out to girls that females in folktales can be just as intelligent, fun and resourceful as the males. These engaging stories are perfect for readers of any age.

I got this book as a little girl, along with another collection "Tatterhood", written and edited by the same people (I believe). This one stuck in my mind as being the most entertaining, although both were good.

The unique, although sparse, illustrations are very interesting and wonderful, not like any other drawings in children's book. Unlike "Tatterhood", the fact that these stories were about young girls really drew me, and was quite exciting. For parents with little girls interested in legends, fantasy, and faraway places, I'd definitely recommend buying this for your children and reading it aloud.

Phelps created two collections of tales featuring strong women to show that not all female heroines in folklore are passive victims of circumstance. This book was originally published in 1981 to answer the feminist attack against fairy tales that appeared in the 1970s. This collection pulls stories from several cultures and will be great for reading at bedtime. Included in the 21 tales are East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Duffy and the Devil, and The Old Woman and the Rice Cakes (from Japan). The tales are interesting enough to keep the attention of both adults and children. I also recommend Phelps' other collection, "Tatterhood."

Bloom has done it again. The man that produced such astounding works as "Lucifer Principle" and "Global Brain" has created yet another great tale of non-fiction, complete with his trademark of fluid-logic storytelling. Anyone who is a fan of the aforementioned books would do themselves a great favor by indulging in this new series. This first book was totally captivating, keeping my attention from the first sentence to the last. Full of wit, humor and hints of sarcasm, Bloom effectively tells the beginning of the story of the Western cultural revolution in the early 1960's, and reveals his place in carving out the story. I was born some twenty-odd years after these adventorous excursions, but through Bloom's masterful storytelling and sharp writing style I felt as if I were with him every step of the way. I cannot wait to follow up and read the rest of the series. Although it is a bit different from his more scientific books, this series is sure to delight anyone fortunate enough to recognize the talents of this brilliant, keen mind.

Howard Bloom is the heart and soul of science. He represents the deepest spiritual, personal, emotional profundity of the process of discovery and learning, and this book absolutely secures him, without a doubt, as the only person suited to speak to people at large on the matter. Endlessly witty, delightful, and gut-punchingly astonishing in its weightiness, How I Accidentally Started the 60s is one of those reads that makes you stop every chapter because you have to get up and smile for a while. This is a life affirming book, this is a story that makes even the most hard hearted empirical thinker realize that there is love, beauty, and salvation for us wretched humans. To use an oft overused cliche, this book will simply "make you believe again".

For those familiar with Howard Bloom's earlier works, The Lucifer Principle and Global Brain, this will prove a delightful surprise. Here, he offers a comedic autobiographical account of his coming of age. A warning for literalists: If you're looking for precise causal mechanisms that attribute a social movement to the actions of one man, you won't find them here. A more accurate, and more awkward title would be: How I began living out the sex, drugs, and rock and roll (plus Eastern mysticism) cultural archetype of the late 1960's about five years before anybody else in America. This little gem deserves a wide readership and acclaim as a warmer, funnier, smarter version of On The Road.

I'm a huge fan of Bloom's science books, Global Brain and Lucifer Principle. Actually I consume all science books, and my two all-time favorites are the two I just mentioned, just above Consilience, The Selfish Gene, and The Blank Slate. So naturally I was interested in this. A humorous memoir? Hard to believe it's the same genius, except for the unmistakably colorful literary style. I couldn't stop reading! What a rip-roaring story! It made me realize the reason Howard Bloom isn't frequently mentioned in the same breath as Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, and EO Wilson is that his genius is not comparable to any other. Is this the life you need lead to become a scientific visionary? If so, Steven Gould should have dropped more acid and shoplifted with his jock strap.

What a great idea! In Full Bloom pairs folktales from all over the world with vignettes about real women--real, mature women. Each folktale/vignette exemplifies a certain trait or common experience of mature women, such as "Protecting Our Daughters" (Demeter and Persephone/Elizabeth Morgan) and "Breaking Free of Convention" (Lilith/Mae West).

Additionally, the book is broken up into two sections, Roses and Not Roses. The Roses are the traditional women, or women acting in traditional roles, while the Not Roses are untraditional women. Creeden doesn't denigrate or glorify either--she celebrates them equally and shows the reader the best sides of those roles.

Finally, Creeden includes a comprehensive collection of notes, which I particularly liked. I'm interested in folklore, so the notes gave me a good starting place for more research.

I have no problem recommending this book to everyone. Just because it's about mature women doesn't mean only they will appreciate it!

What a delightful book! I laughed and cried. Ms. Creeden has been able to connect folktale and legend to lives of real people. Her choices are so varied we are treated to ancient tales as well as urban stories -- Women who are "Roses" and "Not Roses", well known and unknown. In doing so, she captures the essence of women's struggles and joys with both insight and wit! A good read and great examples for our own journeys!

Ever read a book in an afternoon, and then wished you hadn't?

I'm talking about the kind of book that you should treasure instead, maybe hoard it for yourself, so you can appreciate it over a longer period of time.

This is a book like that. You'll be tempted to read it quickly (it's 125 pages) but it is full of great and helpful stuff, and what's more, it's the kind of book that's easily read, gently told, and immensely helpful. His discussions of unanswered prayers, and of the role of petitioning in praying were especially helpful. (If you're someone like me who imagined that asking God for something was somehow easier, read his discussion on pages 82 and 83 about how prayers of petition are tests of the reality of our faith).

Jesus taught us to pray, and we never stop learning. No matter where you are along the path, this book will offer help and encouragement in your praying and ultimately in your love for God.

An Orthodox friend recommended this book on prayer. Even though I am not Orthodox, I found the thoughts contained in this book useful to anyone who wants to have a better prayer life.

Simply an excellent companion for the journey into prayer

This little book rewards and challenges the reader on every page. Yes, it is a book on prayer, and undertaking the subject deeply brings the reader face to face with topics of genuine friendship, forgiveness, and how to approach thinking about God. There is grist enough for a lifetime at the prayer-mill. Some chapter topics include:

* The Lord's Prayer
* Meditation and worship
* The Jesus Prayer
* Unanswered prayer and petition
* Silence

To name topics seems almost a foolish exercise, because in each of the chapters mentioned and in the rest of this book there is such scope and depth. For Metropolitan Anthony, it was impossible to separate the language of prayer from our need for a personal relationship with the living God. If you sense that this pre-supposition may be true, then this is a fine book to guide your journey.

Bloom is a spiritual hero.

Anthony Bloom is one of my spiritual heros. In fact I drew from his work in writing "Paths to Pray: Finding Your Own Way to the Presence of God" (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2003). Because of his ground-breaking work I was able to extend prayer to set forth over 40 ways to pray from over 2000 years of Christian history including prayer shawls, labyrinths, mandalas, novenas and more. I've attempted to write with sensitivity, depth and comprehension.
