This book is one of the best book that I have read. Even though the price range is kind of high, I believe that this book is worth the price because it is one of the best books that I have read. Loius Blanc's views are similar to mine, and anyone who reads this book will be happy. A MUST READ BOOK FOR ANYONE!

Contemplative versus sportive
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-17
I began to be highly interested in mountanieering when I read Bonatti's books.Apart from being an excellent writer, that is proved by his too accurate and at the same time impassasionated descriptions of landscapes, figures, whether changes and effects of light,he called my attention mainly by his ideas about contemplative mountanieering versus sportive mountanieering. That is,climbing as a way to self-knowledge rather than a competition between two men.Bonatti the poet,Bonatti the photographer, are not so far away from Bonatti the climber, but one would say that his artist vein is only a coherent consequence of his whole human perception. He is known to be able to climb down from the Mount Blanc whatever the whether conditions be,as he proved when involved in the famous tragedy on the Freney Pillar, but his knowledge of the mountain trascends,so to say, farther the mere geographical aspect of the matter, and that was what fascinated me."The evening fell and I was walking alone uo to the highest regions of Mont Blanc",writes Bonatti in another book of his,The mountains of my life.He has gone beyond technical details and mere time measures, and has therefore achieve, through extreme pain many times,an ecstatic vision about the awfulness and solitude in the highest peaks.

The Definitive Chamonix Ski-Mountaineering Guide

This is the definitive ski mountaineering and steep skiing guidebook to the greater Chamonix area. It runs the gamut from routes a skilled amateur can attempt to testpieces and on to the greenlines, things only the true masters will be able to ski. A must for any ski mountaineer if only to drool over.

A wonderful baby book for Catholic parents. Includes the usual areas for baby's birth, eruption of teeth, etc., but also include baby's baptism, confirmation, and sacraments received. I have one for each of my children and plan to give them as gifts for Catholic friends.

Franz Fanon addressed very well the racial issues encounted by previously colonized civilizations like the French island of Martinique. But Martinique is just an example. The truth is raw, but it's the truth, and there is still a long way for the freedom of the mind.

a glimpse into the extraordinary
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-04
The Rain Maker is an extraordinary book in every sense. Many will read it as a wonderful flight of fancy into the "Magic and Magicians" territory of Asian journeys, many with a more complete background to this book will recognize that this book as the authenticate and true account of a Tibetan Lama of the old school of Buddhism - telling us his life story. In either case the journey through the book, narrative and personal life story is truly remarkable.

The book treats the extraordinary with a matter of fact attitude that turns it into the mundane - this creates an intimacy and a closeness which gives the book its power. We are told of the Zombies that the Nagakpa must conquer, the fierce onslaught of black magicians that must be destroyed and the ardeous reality of the life of a wandering Magician and Master of the Tibetan Old school of Buddhism.

If this book were fiction it would be one of the best fiction books I have read. As Dr Marsha Woolf presents us with it authoritively as fact it calls into question the world we live in. As we read our notions of the world collapse just like the dark forces that Lama Yeshe Dorje deals with in his humbly presented account of the world he lived in.

Oh, yes, give me salads!!!

This is the best salad book I have ever seen. I have made about a dozen of the salads so far and every one is a winner. I have flags on the ones I want to try in future and the book looks like it has fringe on the end because I've tagged so many. The ingredients are ones that I either have in the pantry or are easy to purchase so I can plan a whole week of salads if I want to and know that we will yum them up - there are seldom leftovers. A lot of the salads are served warm or room temperature which my husband really appreciates. If you have non-salad eaters in your family - they just might convert if you serve them some of the salads in this book.

Singapore: A phenomenon

Review Date: 2008-01-25
I have only visited Singapore once in my life. As a tourist. and I was very impressed with what I saw there.
This book highlights a very fascinating period in Singapore's history.
The years 1960-1980 were very important to build the foundation Singapore is built upon. And still profits from, from day to day.
The economic, social and political development provides for a good read.
This book should be in every student or scholars backpack when the history of Singapore is studied.
