This is an excellent book for anyone interested in deaf studies or who has a deaf child. It shows all the emotional levels what hearing parents with a deaf child goes through (the feeling of not understanding deafness, thinking the child has limitations, and the list goes on and on and on...). I read this book in a few days and could not lay it down. I recommend this book to everyone I come into contact when talking about really good books.

Essential for planning this incredible trek

This is the most up-to-date guide I could find to the Tour du Mont Blanc. I'm doing the trek in July this year (2007) and this book has been essential in planning the route, hut/refuge selections, and for general hiking/access tips.

Combine this book with Kev Reynolds book "Tour du Mont Blanc" and the Rando Editions "Pays du Mont-Blanc A1 1:50,000" hiking map and that's all your need to take this incredible journey.

Fascinating!

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this book. It had been reviewed in the magazine the Economist so I figured it couldn't be all that bad. It turned out to be even more enjoyable then I had imagined.
The story takes place in 18th century France. The main character is an engaging young Breton, Nicholas le Floch, who shortly after entering the police force in Paris is called upon solving a puzzling crime. The plot is well thought out. What makes the novel truly riveting however is the multitude of details about life in France two and a half centuries ago. The author, a diplomat and a historian, has a knack for weaving fascinating information into the story. His style is sophisticated and cultured. He describes with equal ease the gruesome (such as the way a net was tied from one side of the river Seine to the other to catch corpses that might have been thrown in there) and the delectable (he gives several mouth watering recipes that call for unusual ingredients).
One word of caution: The vocabulary used in this book is not for beginners! Although French is my first language, I found myself looking up words in the dictionary more than once. It was a pleasure for me to come across such a rich writing style but it may be frustrating to those readers who expected everyday parlance.
Note: the second book in the series, "L'homme au ventre de plomb" is in my opinion even better than the first.

Unfortunately this book is in French but it is a MUST read for every single Human Beeing that wants to have more close, honest, factual look at the various genocides(unheard of or known) organized by "white peoples".
Mind, it is not a racist book. The title itself says it from non-whites to non-aryen ... It revisits the genocides of the native americans, slavery, modern genocides in Europe and in Africa
The books alsod destroys all the "organised misundertandings" like: slavery was organized by African themselves etc...
If you speak a little French, don't hesitate !

Un peintre éperdu de douleur et de couleurs.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-20
