Dover has done the reading world an enormous favor by keeping books like this available in low-cost editions. Poems like "The Little Black Boy," The Chimney Sweeper," and "The Lamb" are among the sweetest, saddest lyrics ever penned by a poet in English. Reading these poems in an edition that provides facsimile color reproductions of the original watercolor plates (painted individually by hand) helps in our perception of them. These poems were meant to be absorbed visually. Branches, vines and leaves weave through the lines as we read. Of course children can appreciate the sentiment and charm of the poems, but older readers will see their sharp social criticism as well, especially when balanced against matching poems in Blake's "Songs of Experience." This book has my favorite pastoral lyics in the language. It is a permanent contribution to the spirit of humankind.

Lawrence excels in presenting human emotions!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-29
D. H. Lawrence excels in presenting human emotions of love and lust, hate and hope, faith and passion. The main protagonist, Paul, is said to be an autobiographical account of Lawrence's own self, and perhaps that explains why Lawrence is able to present his array of emotions as well as he manages to do in this novel. The novel is about the relationship between mother and sons, and about the lovers of the respective sons.

The character of mother is actually the one around whom all the story is woven. No one writes about the feelings of woman as well as Lawrence does, and like in other novels, he captures the feelings through delicate and beautiful descriptions of seemingly trivial events. Paul's brother William and the woman he loves Gypsy, present the life of London in backdrop of romance between a highly intelligent male, and a blonde-like bimbo. Paul's own romances with Miriam, a simple, homely girl, who is religious and respecting, and with Clara, a much older than himself and modernist in views female makes this novel a classic study of passionate love and sexual attraction. Among all this, is the role of mother whose compensates for her unhappy marriage by devoting all her energies to her sons, and then in later years has to deal with loves of her sons that threaten to tug them away from her.

The story is also a story of struggle of a family, where a young wife must come to grips with a drinking husband, where children must grow in shadow of the strained relationships of their parents, where Paul, William and the other siblings will grow from childhood into an age where they will fall into love, find vocations and finally the family will grow into a happier, richer bunch. Like typical Lawrence, all relationships are treated with rich and emotional descriptions, and the innermost thoughts of characters are spread out in beautifully written prose. The novel captures commotion of love and lust quite well, and eventhough Lawrence has refrained from talking about sexual attraction in a way that cause much consternation in his times, the descriptions are lush and unforgettable.

I have always loved the way Lawrence describes nature. Sunlight, leaves, forests, evenings, stars in the night sky, clouds, sea and seashore: all nature itself is woven into the fabric of this novel in very artistic fashion, very poetically and imaginatively. Lawrence, I repeat, is the novelist of last century that no one ought to miss, and trust me his world is run by universal emotions that only writer of his talent, perception and feeling can write.

Lastly, this is a classic, it requires time and effort. The beauty of the writing is in the descriptions, rather than the sequence of events. From seemingly mundane lives of few family members, and using seemingly trivial daily events, Lawrence tells a story of romances, relationships and (I believe one of the best accounts of)mother-son relationship. Its a kind of story that stays with you, makes you understand yourself better, and is wonderful to remember!

Sons and Lovers: D.H. Lawrence's Unforgettable tale of life in a Nottingham miner's home
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-07
DH Lawrence was born in Nottingham, England in 1885. He died at age 44 in Vence, France in 1930. In between those birth and death dates he created great fiction. His first big book and, probably, still his greatest is "Sons and Lovers."
The novel is highly autobiographical. Walter Morel is a crude, hard drinking miner who has no intellectual interests. He weds the etheral and lovely Gertrude. The couple have four children: William, Annie, Paul and Arthur. William, the eldest, is a good boy engaged to a flighty woman. He dies at an early age. The other children, with the noted exception of Paul, live mundane lives.
Paul is the Lawrence figure in the book. He is a momma's boy tied to her tight apron strings. Paul loves books, learning and the beauties of flowering nature. He has long affairs with the beautiful but shy Miriam who lives on a nearby farm and Clara Dawes (resembling Lawrence's wife Frieda Weekly). He marries neither woman leaving his boyhood home for adventures elsewhere. As the novel ends, Paul will continue his artistic work and his spiritual questing.
There is little action in this novel. It is, instead, a pyschological probing of such human affairs as familial and erotic love, death, suffering and the process of saying goodbye to childhood. It is a deeply moving book. One cannot refrain from crying at the death of Paul's saintly mother.
"Sons and Lovers" was written before Lawrence was scorned by critics and damaged by life. It is an excellent book which everyone should read if they are interested in life within a family. This book is rich with descriptions of nature and is a joy to read. Excellent!

The rise and fall of a powerful and influential business
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-06
Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and samples of typefounding, Stephenson Blake: The Last Of The Old English Typefounders is the biography of a man whose family business dominated the British typefounding industry throughout most of the 19th Century - until the late 1880's, when mechanical typesetting systems spelled the doom of the typefounding industry. A detailed history and chronology of the rise and fall of a powerful and influential business carefully researched and very nicely presented by Roy Millington (who draws from his lifetime involvement with Stephenson, Blake & Company, Limited where for more than 30 years he served as the company's honorary archivist and librarian), Stephenson Blake is a unique and very welcome contribution to Publishing History archives and reference collections.

A must read!

After EMBRACE AND CONQUER, this book is my favorite of all of Jennifer Blake's novels. It is lush and steamy without crudity; it is vivid and dynamic without raunch. It is probably the best of the harem romances I have read. Bertrice Small could learn a few points about writing harem romances from this masterpiece.

Outside of the time spent in the harem, a great deal of this novel takes place on ships. I usually don't care for shipboard travel, but this is an exception. From the loss of her father and child to travelling with Napolean himself, Julia's travels are absorbing. I especially loved the romance. This hero and heroine are perfect for each other! I especially loved the scene where they fight over Julia's nightgown and later, their time in the East.

Try THE STORM AND THE SPLENDOR. It's a classic!

Lose 3 lbs a week!!

Cardiologist Dr. Blake Donaldson wrote this book in early 60s after his patients had unsuccessful results with low-calorie diets. It is the original no-carb diet and it is not for sissies but if you are dedicated you can lose 3 lbs a week. In addition to weight loss, there are chapters on heart disease, gall stones, diabetes, osteoarthritis, hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and allergies.

I have lost a good deal of weight with the help of this book and feel so much better. It gives one a lot of power to know how simple it is to control your weight once you understand how. You will not be hungry on this diet I promise!!
