An agreement to exchange murders
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-16
Two men agree to exchange each other's murders to provide themselves with a perfect alibi. Parts of the plot are very similar to that of Strangers on a Train, and the author acknowledges this at the beginning of the book. One of the men seems much more admirable than the other, but is he really? Suspense as the plot unfolds.

The Perfect Spot is the perfect book for showing the father and son relationship. They are each looking for that perfect spot each for different reasons. The author-illustrator's setting is the very beautiful Schooley's Mountain County park in northwest New Jersey.

This book was great, the idea of a perfume that can drive mad a man for you is something I would like to find in real life ^^, it really keep me awake until I finish it, the only bad thing about it, is that a friend ask me to lend her the book, and she never gave it back, :(, but it only proves that it is a great novel.I'm really thinking on buying it again ^^.

Poems that map a journey and a destination...

Review Date: 2008-11-11
When one receives a generous gift one is grateful, and gratitude is the first word that comes to mind to a reader of "Permanent Address." Gratitude for the gift of this perceptive, finely-wrought collection of poems. Certain locales and themes circulate throughout Lorna Knowles Blake's work, particularly the unusual journey, both geographical and artistic, from the Cuba of her youth ("Because I have no accent"), to her current life, divided between New York City and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A mixed marriage, a young daughter, and the above-mentioned locales are jumping-off points for wistful musings and clear-eyed accounts of incidents in her life, painful, or joyous, or both at the same time. And there are colorful side excursions to the world of art, as she studies, describes, and in one case, steps right into, some alluring paintings. But underlying all the poems is a mastery of form, which lends a kind of structural integrity to these gentle, knowing, unpretentious nuggets of feeling. "Permanent Address" won the Richard Snyder Publication Prize in 2006, and one can't finish it without hoping that greater recognition is in store for Ms. Blake.

Each decade has it's own author. The writing style can be funny, cynical or very informative on the contribution and production of this artist through the decades.

How Refreshing!

Review Date: 2000-09-26
This is a tale of two young boys, one caucasion and one African-American, who were unlikely friends in North Carolina farmland in the late 40's and early 50's. The bond created between these two boys was strong enough to carry on to their high school years when they encountered the trials and tribulations of a newly integrated school. Together they were able to overcome these hardships and continue a relationship through adulthood, keeping in contact and sharing experiences as each man fought his own life threatening disease. This story is an inspiration and an education for all.

The Poet Prophet of England

When it finally came time to add a volume of Blake to my permanent library I choose this excellent selection from the Everyman's Library. Like the entire collection it is printed in a classic typeface on acid-free, cream wove paper with a sewn full cloth binding. It also comes with a crystal cover over the half-jacket. This is a book that will last several lifetimes.

I am not scholar enough to know if this is a complete compilation of the poet's work. However, I have not found it wanting. All the major works such as the Songs of Innocence and Experience, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, America, Europe, The book of Urizen, Milton, Jerusalem, etc., are here; along with a large collection of manuscript fragments and poetical sketches. Moreover there is an informed biographical introduction and a detailed chronology of the author's life compared to the literary context of the time and to historical events. There are also about twenty plates of the artist's own illustrations of his works.

One brief note on interpreting the work of this visionary mystic: the four Zoas correspond to Jung's four functions. Urison equals reason and law, Orc equals feeling, Tharmas equals sensing, while Los equals intuition and the visionary.

I've heard Blake dismissed as a semi-literate eccentric by some. They have obviously never actually read the man. There are elements of Plato, Plotinus, the Hermetica, the Bhagavad Ghita, the Cabbala, as well as many other mythologies and theologies, imbedded in these works- and in the true spirit of their respective times and cultures.

It is no wonder that Bucke lists him as one of the indisputable cases of Cosmic Consciousness.

Classic poetry for a modern age
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-22
A beautifully illustrated collection of poems by English poet and mystic William Blake... The subject matter (and the didactic tone) may seem remote to many modern readers, and secular-minded parents may wish to steer clear of the constant talk of angels, creators and shepherds, but for those wishing to immerse their children into the English canon, it would be hard to imagine a better introduction to Blake's work than this. The soft-textured artwork recalls Blake's own fantastical visual style, with its wild celebration of nature, and perfectly compliments the text. Although some of the loftier verses may be hard to crack, many poems are easily understood, including the well-known "The Tyger" ("Tyger, tyger, burning bright...") and "The Nurse." Part of an excellent series of introductory poetry sets. (ReadThatAgain)
