Fascinating look at the Mormon view of the Gods
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-12
This is the third book in Ostler's series Exploring Mormon Thought. In this volume he reconstructs the Hebrew view of a council of gods that is presided over by the Most High God. On that council are several Sons of God including Yahweh who was appointed to oversee us. Ostler then goes into a series of discussions on the ancient view of the gods looking at pre-Hebrew, Hebrew, second temple Judaism, and finally New Testament beliefs and how they fit in with the concept of a council of Gods.

In the next section Ostler takes a look at the Latin Trinity and compares it with the scriptures and logic. He follows with a look at the Orthodox Social Trinitarianism pointing out some if its strengths and weaknesses.

In the following section he takes a thorough look at the Godhead in Mormon thought and discusses and answers challenges to this view. In the last section he explores the Mormon doctrine of deification and compares it with Latin and Orthodox thought. He finishes with a look at the scriptural basis for deification.

I found his logic and discussion to be powerful. He truly thinks things through in a unique way and I found myself looking at things like I have never looked at them before. I really enjoyed his discussion supporting his views from the scriptures. I am in a Bible study group of non-LDS people and was able to help them understand the Mormon concept of the Godhead much better from the scriptures than I was able to before I read this book. The other thing that has helped me with my study group is that Ostler's familiarity and use of theological and philosophical terms has helped me immensely in the correct understanding of terminology that is not commonly used by Mormons.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Mormon concept of the Godhead. Both Mormons and non-Mormons would benefit from reading this.

I normally do not read fictional books, but a friend of mine told me I needed to read this book because it was so good. I read hers, and finished it within 2 days! This book is wonderful. It combines Greek mythology, adventure, mystery and passion all into one story. I was so impressed with the book that I ordered it from amazon and had to write this review so others could experience this page turner for themselves!

Sheltered heroine meets Mr. Danger but can these opposites find love?

Review Date: 2008-03-10
Ally Blake's FALLING FOR THE REBEL HEIR is a wonderful romance of opposites. War-Zone correspondent photographer meets quiet, book-loving heroine who craves security. Trespassing, physical attraction and pursuit are one thing, but can they also find true love?

Kendall York doesn't like risks, not after a car accident took away her fiance and her light step. Seeing her external scars, feeling her internal scars, Kendall is afraid to truly live. Hudson Bennington III, prep school achiever and famous war-zone correspondent catches a glimpse of what appears to him to be a mermaid when he comes home to his estate and pool to find Kendall has made herself quite at home. Not able to get her out of his mind, he makes her a proposal -- to help him type his memoirs. In such close proximity, will their hearts find a home in each other? Have Kendall and Hud found the one person that can release them from the nightmares of their past or are their ambitions and dreams just too far apart?

FALLING FOR THE REBEL HEIR starts off with a bang as the hero catches the heroine trespassing on his property. An initial attraction leads to love as the author opens layer and layer of the richness of her characters. Each encounter between the hero and heroine shed those things which separate them, mainly class differences, careers, and even personality labels. Visual meets verbal as a photographer encounters a literary, Shakespeare-quoting heroine. Both Kendall and Hud find liberation from the scars of the past in sharing, but when ambition and Hud's job come into play, will Hud choose his job or love?

Readers of Ally Blake's previous book, BILLIONAIRE ON HER DOORSTEP, will enjoy her new romance FALLING FOR THE REBEL HEIR for the look inside her characters which characterizes both romances. FALLING FOR THE REBEL HEIR, however, looks further inside her characters while revealing increasing technical skill in this author's romance writing. Although the hero and heroine do confront each other as well in a verbal fireworks scene, the changes in them come from within. The pairing up of the hero and heroine starts some kind of chemistry, both physical and internal, but here the reader sees the inside evolution come from within each character. FALLING FOR THE REBEL HEIR is Ally Blake romance at its best!

Invaluable gigbag-sized book for chords/scales/modes
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-04
I always have a copy of this little book with me in my gig back at all times whenever I'm jamming, street performing, practicing, gigging, etc. It features page after page of chords ranging from basic majors, minors, 5th, etc. to augmented chords, 11ths, etc. It also provides 4 different recommended versions of each chord, each with a specialized purpose be it arpeggios/broken chords, strumming, "all-purpose", etc.

The book also features basic explanation of scale positions such as the boxed pattern, three-note-per-string pattern, single-string patterns, etc. as well as explaining the invaluable knowledge of modes and mode theory which is so crucial to know if you are aspiring to play rock or jazz music of any variety with any sort of diversity and skill (nu-metal and pop-punk bands need not apply). It features the boxed patterns for tons of scales as well as the 7 modes.

In short, if you are a guitarist frequently on the go, this book is essential. It fits perfectly in the top compartment of mine and whenever I need to look up a chord, study one or two chord formations, etc., I just whip this puppy out and my needs are satisfied. Geddit. Liekyeah.

This book is great if you are just starting out on guitar. It is useful if you want to be self-taught as well as to give you extra practice if you are taking formal lessons. This is the only book I've found that can really teach you how to play. It goes from the basics and works up slowly. If you buy this one first, you'll save yourself alot of money and trouble.

The book starts off simply, with information on notes, measures, beat, and a simple guide on how to read music. After that, it teaches you the basics of playing keyboard and eventually moves onto chords, scales, and other things of importance.

I highly reccomend this book to anyone that wants to teach themself keyboard or piano.

Feast of Goblyns - the first adventure module ever put out under the Ravenloft label! Still considered the most atmospheric gothic module of all time, with the sole exception of I6 - Ravenloft itself. In this dramatic story, your bold adventurers are pulled from the realms they know, into the dread mists of Strahd's domain... there, they'll find themselves caught up as deadly puppets in a chaotic web of intrigue, as the great dark powers seek to manipulate them to their own ends in a nefarious quest for the accursed Crown of Soldiers. A huge epic - features a 96-page book, 2 screens, and a giant poster map!

A story of love and bravery
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-12
I had to search to find this book. It is out of print.
But when our son raised a Guide Dog puppy (a female shepherd, just like Buddy) for Guide Dogs of America as a homeschool project he wanted to learn all he could about these special dogs.

Buddy was a dog guide to Morris Frank, one of the founders of the Seeing Eye. The first dog guide school in the United States.

This novel tells the amazing story about how young man and dog met. And the journey they braved together to teach the people of this country about the amazing independence these special dogs offer.

My son loved it and learned more than just the history of the Seeing Eye dogs. He learned about determination, bravery, loyalty, and love.

Just read the book. It is that special.
