great ideas for managing anger

I bought this for my 4 year old who had(has) a hard time controlling his anger. This was a great story for him to understand that he wasn't alone. It also gave great tools for him to use to help him control his temper. There are clear guidelines in the back of the book to help any parent create a system that might work for their house. My son is doing much better with using his words and asking for help.

John's Smiley Faces: A Story About Anger is a book for parents and children alike that doubles as a useful teaching tool that instructs children in the importance of learning how to manage anger, and shows adults ways to help children channel their emotions into productive forces. Offering a "smiley faces" program that reinforces rewards for acceptable behavior and has limit-setting consequences for inappropriate physical expressions, John's Smiley Faces combines a simple narrative and a powerful step-by-step instructional that is extremely useful for teaching young people valuable life lessons. In a note to parents, a psychologist discusses both the value of anger and the critical importance of developing good coping skills early.

I want to speak to 2 people. To the reading public. If you don't get this...you are a fool. All I will say is that this author is one to look out for. Barbara Blake will give JK Rowling (Harry Potter) a run for her money.

To Barbara herself. We are not close anymore but I will always be your biggest fan. Good job sweetheart!

Resurgence of a genre

If you've longed for a return to the classic Western drama of the lone hero but thought the genre was dead, this is the series for you. Although I'm not a fan of Westerns in general, I enjoy a good read regardless of genre. And if you already are a fan of the Old West, you will definitely enjoy the Max Blake series. I admit, I read the first book because I know the author personally, but I was pleasantly surprised by the storytelling. Now I'm just starting the second book and knowing I'm going to enjoy the ride.

Best Western I've read
Sometimes you need to take a leap of faith with a new writer. I've shunned Western novels but after my son (an avid Louie L'Amour fan) spoke so highly of "The Killing Trail" I decided that I should give it a shot. If you are looking for a fast-paced, action packed story, read this book. The shooting scenes dripped with graphic detail. Marshal Max Blake will be a strong character throughout Florence's series. When I was a kid, I watched "Gunsmoke" every Saturday night with my Dad. If you loved Matt Dillon you'll like Max Blake, too. My dad would have enjoyed the book, too. Can't wait to read the next installment: "Trail of Revenge."

I read this book so many times in third grade that I knew it by heart! I love the way that Mr. Dahl "alerts" you to the danger of witches. After I read the book for the first time, I began to watch people for signs of being a witch, including my teacher. THIS BOOK SHOULD BE IN EVERY LIBRARY! It doesn't scare little kids because it has a happy ending, though open ended. I think I even enjoyed being scared. I went on to read the rest of Mr. Dahl's books. I'd give this one two thumb up

This book rocks!

I first read this book in elementary school, in 2nd grade. Since then, I've always made sure to read it at least once a year. It's almost become a tradition! I LOVE Roald Dahl's books, and I incorporate him in my life. For my speech team, I performed a poem from "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" and won 2nd place! I think every child should read this book at least once in their lifetime.

Refreshing and Upbeat!

Review Date: 2005-05-24
Andrew McCrea writes in a refreshing, upbeat style that engages the reader looking for inspiration. He focuses on the positive aspects of the presidencies even while acknowledging that some had rather sullied reputations. This gives the reader a certain pride for having been governed so well by genuinely well-intentioned men. I would go so far as to say this book makes one proud to be an American. While we have our faults, mirrored in our presidents, we still have the best system the world has ever seen. And we always make room for improvement forgiveness, and the ability to include peoples of all creeds.

During Andrew's visits to presidential home sites, libraries, and museums, he encountered people who were passionately enthusiastic about "their" presidents. These fortunate people have found their heroes and are now in the business of promoting them to us who are still searching. There is ample material to get anyone started looking for a worthy hero to emulate. Andrew encourages the reader to emulate these great men, not so much in their achievements, but in the better nature of their character. And this is perhaps the greatest strength of the book. The author even provides a clear, succinct listing of the moral of the story in a section marked with a "moral compass."

This book is a joy to read. Each president has his own chapter only a few pages long so it can be read in short spurts, if necessary. It's full of fascinating tidbits from the lives of our presidents. I recommend it to everyone who wants to find the good in others.

Inspiring, slice-of-life stories of past U.S. Presidents
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-01
In the style of his first book, AMERICAN COUNTRYSIDE (and his syndicated radio show of the same name), author McCrea brings keen perception and homespun wit to an exploration of the lives and times of past U.S. presidents. Like a modern-day Charles Kuralt traveling the country gathering stories about interesting people and places, he visited 15 different States to find out about all of the presidents from Washington to Truman. He even searches out the inside scoop on David Rice Atchison, the chairman of the Senate who served as President for one day, and activist/clairvoyant Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for President. At often obscure and out-of-the-way monuments, homes, museums and libraries, McCrea unearths fascinating and little-known tales, usually related by curators and docents with great knowledge and passion about their subjects.

Yes, history often repeats itself in presidential politics, such as the one-electoral vote victory by Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, when a controversial recount occurred in - you guessed it - Florida. Another striking coincidence is the plethora of presidential activity in this year's most important "Swing State" - there are some 16 monuments and attractions celebrating the seven U.S. presidents who were born in Ohio.

McCrea brings an old-fashioned respect to the office of the president - refreshing in light of today's cynical outlook on politics - treating the presidency as something we should all revere and look up to. He points out a lesson to be learned from a significant moment in each president's life and times, something that can inspire us even today. McCrea's great talent is finding the essence of human dignity in both the humble farmer and the holder of the highest office in the land - and telling their stories with equal enthusiasm.

Packed with action, intrigue and genuine humanity

This was an interesting read, especially since I picked it up only three weeks after finishing James Ellroy's American Tabloid. The books feature many of the same characters and themes, but veer off in wildly different directions. Ellroy treats allegations of a Kennedy-Monroe affair as a trumped up urban legend, but Gorman uses it as a springboard for his entire novel.

This a "race against time" story, with several parties vying for a set of highly sensitive tape recordings which, if made public, could destroy the Kennedy administration. The players are drawn from all walks of life, from a rogue FBI agent to a hard-working single mother working for a scandal sheet. Gorman delivers a solid and entertaining tale, packed with action , intrigue and genuine humanity. The book is written in a short, punchy style, which becomes more clipped as the story builds to its shattering climax. Fast paced, and energetic, this book should please Gorman devotees, both old and new.

Great Read Couldn't Put It Down

Selected the book as the best of the worst. Was I ever wrong. Marilyn has died. What would happen and who would control the government if tapes of Marilyn with the Kennedy's brothers were made public. Everyone wants the tapes. Hoover, the Mob, and mostly the Kennedy brothers. The race is on and the bodies are piling up. Page one has you hooked, and by the time you get through all the players and who plays for who (including Marilyn's thoughts) you wonder where the time went and are amazed the books half finished. All the characters are well thought out and vital to the story some are known to the world and others I never knew. Fiction? One of the best books I've read this year

This was the first used textbook that I purchased online. The book was in almost-new condition, it arrived within 5 days after I placed the order, AND the cost was 50% less than the used book price at my college bookstore! I'll be searching Amazon again next semester!

So often, math textbooks are beyond anyone's comprehension. Here is one book that has changed all that! There are plenty of examples and explains the reasons and theories as to why a certain math topic is solved the way it is. It also shows different ways one could solve problems!

This 6th edition doesn't have much difference from the 5th except for more on Statistics and Probability.

I have read all three of the Max Blake books now, and this is the best by far. That's saying something because I like all three books a whole bunch. But this one is just excellent. Max finally gets to the bottom of a mystery that started in the first book, The Killing Trail. But there sure are some surprises on the way. If you haven't tried one of the Max books, do yourself a favor and take a chance. As for me, I can't wait for the next one.

Fresh, new direction

Bill's third book in the Max Blake series takes several unexpected turns in Trail to Redemption, with a stronger sense of realism than Books 1 and 2. Part of that realism is an unexpected ending, leaving one mystery unsolved but opening the door to entirely new adventures. It will be interesting to see where Bill takes this adventure if he continues the series.
