Code Of Honor: The Making Of Three Great American Westerns by Emmy award-winning makeup artist Michael F. Blake, delves into the formative process behind the classic movies "High Noon," "Shane," and "The Searchers." Original interviews, behind the scenes anecdotes, screenplay evolution, the motives behind casting choices, and much, much more fill the pages of this involving and candid glimpse of what great cinema requires behind the screen. Code Of Honor is a welcome and informative contribution to personal, academic, and community library Cinema History collections and reading lists.

Michael F. Blake has turned in a labor of love, & it shows. CODE OF HONOR not only deals with the making of these three classic films, but why the protagonists act the way they do without 'analyzing' the film, like so many do. In other words, Blake's book is a FUN read, & not a studious one. He writes for the public, & not over thier heads, something I appreciate. The items he points out are fascinating, such as the ties between THE SEARCHERS & STAR WARS, or how many different characters in SHANE all have thier own code of honor.
Well done! I look forward to his next work!

These easy open books are great -- the page sizes are staggered so that parents AND children can open them easier. We have both the numbers and the colors books; my eight-month-old son is fascinated with the vibrant photographs. White polar bear in snow, red poppies, black blackbird, green frog, blue fish, yellow sunflower, pink flamingo, orange leaves, gray seals, brown snake, purple pansies, lots of colors in fall leaves.

Awesome Book!!

I borrowed this book...and...the Numbers: Easy-Open Board Book from our local library for our 9 month old daughter. These books are absolutely AWESOME!! They are SO easy for little (and big) fingers to open. The pictures are breath taking! I hated to return them to the library...so...I'm buying our own set! They are a must have for any infant/toddler library!

This is an excellent, well written book. I was first exposed to it several years ago in a Church Leadership Development course I took in college. Of the books in my library this is one to which I refer frequently. It was especially useful in writing a position description for youth counselors at my church. I have used this book numerous times as a reference for recruiting volunteers. I highly recommend it for *anyone* who works with volunteers, be it in Christian Education or not.

Real-world advise, pros and cons of independent consulting
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-01
I think that anyone who considers becoming an independent consultant should read this book first. It honestly talks about risks and negative sides of contracting as well as the money that you can make as a reward for taking these risks. The style is "tongue-in-cheek", and may even seem offensive at first, but after a few pages you get a feeling that you talk to a buddy who shares the secrets of trade with you. It's fun to read, gives you a great confidence boost if you are serious about independent consulting, and is full of practical advise. I found a lot of parallels with my own consulting experiences. Definitely recommend.

Consulting Demystified

The day I discovered how much consultants on my project were being paid for doing the same work as I was doing, I decided to be a consultant myself. Higher income is just one obvious attraction of consulting; there are many others. On the other hand it's definitely not for everyone. Alan Canton's book will help you decide for yourself. Here, in one well-written and candid package, are all the things you have to consider, from honestly assessing your job, people, organizational skills and self-discipline to the practicalities of establishing your small business *in your area* (that's an important point that other books I've seen fail to consider). In short, Computermoney answered all the unknowns in the back of my mind that were holding me back and gave me a clear and, as it turns out, accurate set of expectations of the consulting lifestyle. I have given copies of this book to six people over the years since it was first given to me. Four of them reached the same conclusion I did and are now well paid computer consultants. Good luck with your decision!

Countless organizations cannot go where they want or need to because their executives' and leaders' thinking is too shallow. Blake Leath proves once again that he is among the smartest people around. He is unafraid to take a stand in the book; often times shaking you by your shirt collar. The ideas and tools section of the book is especially useful. Even though you ought to read the whole book for a full understanding, there are cool stand-alone tools that you can use to amaze your friends and family -- not to mention their ability to enlighten you on ways to become a better strategic leader. Blake's unbelievably broad source materials leave you amazed at how much things change and how much they stay the same (see Socrates quote in Outcomes vs. Incomes).

This is a message to investors

This book is sending a message to investors and particularly small investors that a stock or mutual fund investment has no guarantee of going up. There are highs and lows in the market.

The message is sent in a folksy, homespun, satirical and entertaing manner. The messenger is a mythical hermatic type character who creates a story that mixes travels and rendevous' as the means of delivering the message.

Putting the philosophies of Gurdjieff into action
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-02
From back cover:

"'Deeper Man' is essentially about freedom and how this is to be achieved. To transcend our conditioning is a task that each of us has to do for him or herself.

J.G. Bennett was one of the leading exponents of the ideas of G.I. Gurdjieff, the pioneer of methods of personal transformation appropriate to a Western society. Gurdjieff left only hints about many of the means of this transformation process. It was left to Bennett and to others to spell out the practical steps to be taken. 'Deeper Man' has been compiled from the last lectures Bennett gave before his death. The ideas presented by Gurdjieff and Ouspensky in their writings are shown here in a new light which reaches back to their origins. Anyone who wishes to begin the study of the 'deeper man' in him or herself can find in this amazing book their own beginnings."

The most important Book not written by an Orthodox Christian

Hopefully my bias will be clearly revealed by the title.

While I am on the fence or do not accept a # of 'Gurdjieff vs. traditional Christianity' issues [the fate of the soul after death, necessity of the Church's mysteries as institued by Christ, Judas Isacariot, etc, I am convinced that out of the hundred or so books I have read on G. and his system, no other book [excepting unpublished Gurdjieffean Meditation texts] comes even close to organizing clearly and experientially the mass of human spiritual experience.

I rather doubt that this would be a good intro or even early book to read in one's 4th way studies [transformation and Spiritual PSychology would stand you in much better stead], but if after a while one feels stuck...

If one has dipped into the Dramtic Universe, {Bennett's all and everything 'translated' through 50's/60's scientific English}, and found it too 'heady', then prepare to be refreshed. These are edited transcripts [the actual lectures can mostly be heard from bennettbooks' study of man series of tapes of JGB ] of his teaching to the last year or so of 10 month residential 4th way students. It is G, brought up to date. Some would argue against this, but I say put this book together w/ Heart w/ out Measure and an authentic source for learning the basic Gurdjieff meditations and all that will be left in your way will be your Chief Feature.

And in my opinion a few serious errors re: the nature of the 'revelation' of Islam and the transmission of real esoteric Christianity.

In short within the limitations [if you see them as such] of G's Work, this book lays the whole map out as 4 dimensionally as a book can.

Even if you come to feel that you believe differently, you will still be greatful that you had such a touchstone to work from.

Make sure you listen close!!!

by the way, I am not a student of the JGB 'line' my 4th way teacher however used his material liberally and built much of his own researches on JGB's 'new and improved' 4th way. But I have come to JGB's primary practical works [Spiritual Psychology, Depper Man, Sevenfold Work and Energies] decades after my original studies and found it is the most valuable attempt at explaining the 4th way psycho-cosmology there is.

I'll admit it. I'm drawn to golf instruction books. I'm always looking for an easy way to knock a few strokes off my game. I tend toward those books which are well illustrated and have a unique approach to the topic. This book satisfies both requirements, and believe it or not, it actually helped my golf game.

George Blake did what many of us wish we could do. He got a PGA teaching professional, Will Frantz, to lead him through the fundamentals and then play several instructional rounds with him. We get to tag along on each step of the way as Blake practices and then plays under Frantz's guidance.

The pictures which accompany the text illustrate both the good techniques (Will Frantz) and the not so good techniques (Blake). Comments from Blake help us understand how to get from the latter to the former.

The most helpful concept in the book is the "crib sheet" which is presented after each "lesson." Blake has the ability to summarize the salient points of each lesson in an easy to understand way. I ended up copying many of the tips from the crib sheets onto 3x5 cards which I carry in my golf bag. They come in especially handy on the practice range when I (frequently)slip back into my old habits.

All in all, I recommend this book to fellow duffers like myself.

Has dozens of photos showing the wrong way and the right way to hit each golf club. Only tells me what I NEED to know. Each chapter ends with a crib sheet that I can take with me on the course or at driving ranges. I carry this book with me on every game.
