This is much more than a kids biography. This is a well-organized, handsomely-presented full read on Master Blake. Yes it's a perfect introduction for someone, but I also found this to be a superb supplementary book for the William Blake fan. I was impressed throughout -- especially with the loads of illustrations herein. Killer lil Blakebook.

I always wanted to figure out what was behind the art and poems of William Blake and I think this author has a special way of getting the reader to that exact information. It is kind of like an Ed Burns documentary but added to that is the joy that the author feels for his subject. That joy added to the rapture of Blake's life leads the reader to splendor.

Great Blake book for all to experience

More Value than just Blakes Seven

Of course I bought it because I was an avid fan of the Blakes Seven TV series. And, like many, intrigued by the characters of the protaganists. Particularly Kerr Avon, as played by Paul Darrow. However the book received one of my highest accolades - "a two o'clock in the morning" read. I stayed up as late as that to turn the pages, and I'm getting older and need my sleep!

It is a deeply interesting memoir, not only of Blakes 7, the making of the show, the other actors, but of Mr Darrow's own life. Which he shares with us up to the age of 17, when he decided on his career, and largely limits himself to professional recollections afterward. Which is great when one is an actor and has another persona, indeed several. As the other reviewers say, it is like chatting to the man, so easy, pleasant and personal is his style.

As he points out, Blakes 7 was a four-year stint in a forty-year career, but he is fated to be remembered as the memorable, anti-heroic, character he created. Not so bad a fate! A rewarding read.

Being a huge fan of Blake's Seven, I was rather anxious to read this; not disappointed in any way! Mr Darrow has led an altogether interesting life, and his writing style lends itself quite well to telling us all about it. It reads less like a book and more like talking to him over dinner and drinks. Overall, a must for any fan of Blake's Seven and anyone with interest in British culture and dramatic history.

Delightful!

I purchased this book as a gift for a fan of the Blake's 7 series, and then read it first, to make sure it would be an OK gift. I did not expect to be absolutely delighted by Mr. Darrow's autobiography. Not only is his life very interesting, but his manner of writing is extremely charming, full of wit -- surprisingly friendly and intimate. I felt like I was having dinner with an old friend who had the best stories to tell. I highly recommend this book to fans of autobiography (not to mention Blake's 7 fans!), the theatre, and just pleasant reading. Thank you, Mr. Darrow!

A step-by-step demystification process of pain and one's options for dealing with it

Review Date: 2008-01-06
Behavioral medicine expert Blake H. Tearnan, Ph.D. presents 10 Simple Solutions to Chronic Pain: How To Stop Pain from Controlling Your Life, a straightforward guide to the most effective pain management techniques. 10 Simple Solutions to Chronic Pain does not deny the value or unilaterally condemn the use of painkiller drugs, but rather teaches the reader alternative methods that can be used in conjunction with medication, or by themselves. Chapters discuss better ways to communicate with doctors and learn which treatment options are most likely to prove beneficial, enhancing emotional well-being, improving one's sleep, the option of biomedical treatments, changing one's nonproductive beliefs about pain through personal experimentation, and much more. A step-by-step demystification process of pain and one's options for dealing with it, highly recommended.

I have suffered from back pain for the past 4 years after being injured in a car accident. I have tried everything from pain meds to acupuncture, even hypnosis. My doctor recommended this book and it really helped. If you follow the advice on a daily basis, you learn to control your pain-it no longer controls you. I'm not letting my back pain interfere with the quality of the rest of my life!

I was new to video editing so I decided to buy this book. I didn't have time to read through 500 pages of text. This book and CD was just what I hoped for - a visual way to jump start me into the world of video editing. The videos cover the basic techniques. There is a second video that you can purchase directly from the author at Brainsville.com that covers more advanced techniques.

The software is so complex I cannot imagine trying to learn this product just from a book alone, I recommend this method.

I have seen other albums to collect children's pictures, but this is the first I have come across that was actually for the "child" to keep as his own and not just for the parents' family records! It's colorful, personal, and I have found it an ideal gift. A great concept!!

Exactly the Information You Need

Review Date: 2006-08-16
One of the first things I learned as a salesman was that you couldn't sell something to people if that wasn't what they wanted to buy. If you're trying to sell beef to vegetarians you had best not be to dependent on commissions for income. Yet in the publishing business fledgling authors think nothing of sending a mystery book to a magazine publisher that only publishes articles on car repair and who isn't interested in new authors at this time.

In the sales business it's called qualifying your prospects. Does this guy buy what I'm selling? Does he need more than he's able to get at the moment? For the freelance writer here is just about all the qualification you need. For some 1,600 publishers here's what they are looking for, what they pay, and often the opening sentence will tell you what you really want to know. For instance, one publisher opens his entry with: 'Please note we do not publish novels, poems, children's books, or short stories. We publish ____.' This alone can save you a lot of time, a lot of postage.

The information in the entries is directly from the publisher. It usually includes his web address so you can see what he is publishing now - and it's likely that this is what he's going to publish in the future.

Here is a tremendous amount of useful information at a very low price.

One of the best organized guides for freelance writers.

The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is an excellent companion to Writer's Market and an essential reference book for freelance writers. Some of the included publications do cross-over, but for the most part, their different. And, it's great that a new edition has been released (2006).

The nice thing about The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is that it provides both contact information and writer's guidelines for the listed publications.

Another thing I like about this reference book is the organization. It has publications organized alphabetically and then has the lists of categories in the back. It's much easier to find publications.

The downside of The American Directory of Writer's Guidelines is that it isn't updated annually. This makes using it a little more difficult because you have to do a cross reference to see if publications still exist, if the contacts still work there, and to make sure the pub hasn't moved. Of course, every query sent should be verified in this way before you send it, so you should be doing these things anyway.

A Wonderful Tale Told Compellingly
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-11
This is fantastic Christmas tale (although I would read it anytime of the year) about a mysterious and elusive Newfoundland dog who saves a disabled man in a snowstorm and then disappears on his way. I agree with the other reviewer that it is certainly a real "tearjerker" but in a wonderful "power of miracles" way. The most compelling thing about the book is that the text depicts the story of the man's family awaiting his arrival on Christmas Eve, while the pictures show what is actually happening to him on this dangerous, stormy night. The art is fantastic and I find new details during every reading. My thanks to author, Frances Ward Weller, and illustrator, Robert J. Blake, for such a fabulous work.

My five year-old daughter likes to pick out books that make mommy cry "happy tears"-- and this is one of them. Beautiful illustrations tell the story of Uncle Ambrose struggling home through a harsh storm on Christmas Eve, while the text tells the story of the concerned young neice waiting at home for his return. Uncle Ambrose's miraculous rescue inspires hope and belief in the miracle of Christmas. After drying our tears we read it again and again, watching the illustrations to find that someone watching over Uncle Ambrose.

Robin Blake's Anthony Van Dyck could also have been featured in our arts section but is a powerful biographical sketch which should not be missed by any interested in biographical history. Van Dyck was a portrait painter who saw his own works passed over in favor of his contemporaries, although they were compared to Titian and Rubens. Blake examines Van Dyck's life and art with an eye to revealing the underlying influences on his works; in the process imparting a fine bit of history. Recommended for any student of portraiture.

This is by far the best bio on van Dyck in print today. I purchased it a year ago, from Amazon UK, and am very glad to see it available in the States. If you have the catalog from either the recent show in London or the Washington DC show from '90, use the images from that to go with Robin's text and you're in for a real treat. Bravo Robin!

Brian Heard, a well-respected forensic scientist, presents his life long experiences with the serious & provocative subject of forensics in a skillful and insightful manner.

His natural storyteller manner combines with his encyclopedic knowledge of the forensic profession to create a benchmark book. I'd highly recommend this to be read by everyone. Criminal investigators, future forensic scientists and attorneys in particular will find it as useful as it is entertaining and the general public will be enthralled. A must read for anyone interested in crime scene investigation.

If you want true crime this has it all. An easily readable account of a Forensic Scientists examination of over 200 cases ranging from the Krays and the Richardsons to the worlds most violent Triad gangs. This man has lead a truely remarkable life and has put it down in a form which is easy to read, entertaining yet full of the most greusome details imaginable. At the end all I wanted was more and I really hope that there is a follow up in the piupeline.
