Years ago prior to the start of this novel the main male character marries the heroine to get her out of a harem to which she has been kidnapped. She manages to leave the harem a virgin and her marriage is not consumated. Over the years they lose touch with each other. The death of the heroines's Gardian is what brings them back together. I liked the excellent depicition of the splendid scenery in this novel. I would have liked to have seen the romance developed a little more and I wish the years ago portion was more condensed but it was still a good book.

Daniel W. Barefoot has traveled far and wide to put together this collection of ghost stories from the American South. In his travels he, or more particularly his wife, may have had a first hand encounter with one of these school spirits whose story he was seeking to tell. Fortunately for them, it wasn't the ghost of old Ben Tillman who seems to still wander the halls of Winthrop University in South Carolina.

Barefoot is an accomplished writer of both history and ghost lore and this book is well written and the stories are told in a believable manner. There are parts of this book that seem to drag a little however and I can't really put my finger on the problem but these dry areas are few and far between and do not detract from the book much at all. The biggest problem is the lack of details given for some of the stories. The author often faces schools with several ghosts and he tries to cram all of the ghosts into three or four pages and in the process the story suffers. He could probably have doubled the size of this book without adding a single institution to his list.

Still, this is an interesting book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The author even managed to include my old haunted alma mater in his book, which of course added to my level of interest. Best of all, most of the stories contain recent eyewitness accounts which are the key to a good ghost story book.

As one reads this book the old sense of what it was like to be a college student comes rushing back, the joy and angst, the anticipation and dread, and the feeling of being on your own for the first time. It is little wonder that many of the young people who have had their college experience cut short by death have decided to hang around campus for a little while longer. It also came as no surprise that William Faulkner is still hanging around his home on the campus of Ole Miss. I think that Faulkner, who loved ghost stories, would thoroughly enjoy this book, just as I did.

Erica is a sociopath, no doubt, but Maddie didn't exactly make it difficult for her. There is no way you should allow another girl to invite herself along on the first date you have with a guy. If she had only said, "Bye, see you," she would have saved herself so much grief.

Not that Mike is necessarily worth so much grief. I started hating him when he snapped at Maddie, after the incident at the party. If that had been me, after I'd said, "Do you want to leave," I would have followed it with "Go right ahead."

And what Erica did to Jimmy was really reprehensible. Not only did she use him, she hurt his reputation: now everyone's going to think he's a masher, and he might not get another date for a long time! If this were a TV show, that might be followed up on, and Maddie might even end up with him. But he's served his purpose, and disappears. Poor sod...

Apart from that, I like it that the Roni storyline was continued. I heard someone say once, "When you are an addict, it is never past tense." That's really true, and Roni's situation---being dumped by the guy who was her touchstone---is a classic one that has led many addicts back to the bottle. And she's following another common pattern---the urge to try drinking again just to "see" if you can handle it or not. Her parents were portrayed somewhat broadly, but many addicts to come from dysfunctional families.

As a children's librarian, I can't read all the books out there. This book was brought to my attention by a young patron whose name is Emily. It is one of her favorites and after including it in several programs, I found that all the girls who heard it loved it, too. Even the youngest of my listeners was fascinated by Emily's quest for fabulous hair and delighted by all the illustrations. They 'oohhed and aahed' over all the lavish hair styles. I guess the freedom of personal expression and the celebration of female beauty are still strong positive messages for girls. Though some femiminsts might disagree, my young friends declare that Emily Blair and her Fabulous Hair are beyond compare!

Many of these stories are so short and spare that you feel you may have missed something along the way. But they linger with you long after you've finished reading. They are about normal people much like ourselves, and they face problems and heartbreaks the same as ours. Mr. Lott is a masterful writer

The Illustrated Discography of Surf Music 1961-65 is an excellent source to find the what, who, and where of surf music produced in these influential times. While the book doesn't go into any great detail of the history of each song, there is a good and basic history of Surf Music and gives useful information about certain artists. This book contains a database-like listing of albums and is a useful guide to collecting albums. This book is worth looking high and low for.

The book caught my eye because I once knew the author, but haven't seen her for maybe 30 years. What you'll find in the book is a set of poems that have a refreshing style, poems that portray deep seated feelings and memories, and covers lots of topics over time. You'll quickly move though this short book, often pausing to re-read passages more than once to savor the metaphors. The poems call up vivid images in your mind and feelings in your past. Well done.

Interesting balance of the use of charting
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-25
Blair provided a balanced perspective of the use of charting. In each case, he provided real examples where the interpretation of the charting method yield the expected result, and also those that didn't.

Blair advised a fair skeptism of using charting tools independently of other investment tools.

A broad overview of the common tools is provided, and this book is recommended for anyone who's getting into charting for the first time. He provided a concise description of each and its use, and also recommended a list of readings for those who would like to get into more details. Personally, this was a quick jump-start for me.

This book is easy reading.

Make Your Day

This is the rare book about preserving open space and wildlife habitat that doesn't leave you feeling like the world is at an end. The Mannings' perspective encourages us to continue to fight for Mother nature, each in our own way, however small it might seem in the total picture. Could be a useful text for an ecology class at H.S. or college level.
