In the absence of the 1790, 1800, and 1810 censuses of Georgia, these early tax lists are a godsend, standing in as almost perfect substitutes for the missing enumerations and in many ways improving on the detail found in most old census records. The counties for which tax records are provided, with their years of coverage, are as follows:

Camden 1794, 1809
Chatham 1806
Glynn 1790, 1794
Hancock 1812
Lincoln 1818
Montgomery 1797, 1798, 1805, 1806
Pulaski 1818
Richmond 1818
Warren 1794, 1805, 1818
Wilkes 1792, 1793, 1794

For each tax list a great deal of information is provided that cannot be found in any other record source. For example, each tax list generally gives the name of the taxpayer, the name of the adjoining property owner, and the name of the original grantee of land--information impossible to find in a census record and of the utmost importance in genealogical research. In addition, though less relevant genealogically, the tax lists identify the number of slaves attached to the property, the watercourses, the acreage, and the value of the land.

Valuable as they are, when these lists were originally compiled and published by Georgia State Historian Ruth Blair in 1926, they were not published with an index and were almost impossible to use. A dozen years later, however, a new State Historian, Mrs. J. E. Hays, prepared a complete index to all 25,000 taxpayers and adjoining property owners and published it as a 1938 W.P.A. project. The two parts, the 1926 Digests and the 1938 Index, are finally united in this reprint edition which can now claim to be the foremost source in early Georgia genealogy. To the genealogist searching for his Georgia roots, this is the true starting point of any serious research.

Very unique and interesting...

A unique and interesting read. This is the second of a trilogy that was never completed as the author died under tragic circumstances shortly after the publication of this book. The story stands well on it's own with a powerful message. This is Christian fiction that could be categorized as apocalyptical but it would appeal to the non-religious crowd. This is a compelling and timely story of teenage love, sinister supernatural forces and guardian angels. The main character's soul hangs in the balance as good and evil literally battle for influence in her life. The message is not subtle as the author gives his interpretation of the eternal consequences of committing suicide. It would definitely make me think twice. The story is slightly darker than the Left Behind series but it would appeal to the same type. Additionally it provides an important message for impressionable kids and the difficulties they face today. Recommended for a good read.

A Great Little Guide to a Beautiful State
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-26
North Carolina (of which I am a native, so please forgive the bias) likes to advertise itself as the "Variety Vacationland" and after reading the "State Parks of North Carolina" it's not hard to see why. Eastern North Carolina features hundreds of miles of beaches, lighthouses, coastal villages, swamps, Civil War forts, and the two largest landlocked sounds in the United States. The central section of the state (the Piedmont) features rolling, forested hills ocassionally broken by isolated, jagged peaks (usually called "knobs" locally) with excellent rock climbing and superb views, and swift rivers and large, manmade lakes. And in western North Carolina there are the Appalachian mountains, featuring the highest peaks east of the Mississippi river. This outstanding book, written by two biology professors from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, covers all 41 of North Carolina's state parks. These two men traveled to each of the state parks and thoroughly explored them (they traveled over 9,000 miles in researching this book). Although naturally concerned with the plant and animal life in the parks, the book is still designed with the camper, hiker, or even casual visitor in mind. The authors divide the parks into three geographic sections - coastal plain, Piedmont, and mountains, and they also include seperate sections on the state's nature preserves and recreation areas (all located on the shores of its' largest manmade lakes). The chapters on each park feature a map with roads, hiking trails, campgrounds, etc., contact information for the park, the park's main attractions, a section on the history of the park, a section on the plant and animal life to be found in the park, a section on hiking and (if relevant) climbing trails, a section on campgrounds or other facilities (and park activities, if any), and a section on nearby historic and/or natural attractions. There aren't many photographs, but I suppose that's to encourage the reader to see the parks for themselves. If you're interested in visiting North Carolina, or you're a native Tar Heel who's looking to explore your state, then this book is a great place to start! I've used it on a number of trips, and it has proven its' value time and again.

Good reading about healthcare strategy

This book is a surprise for me. Good for a quick look over and refreshing the mind.

It is very academic-focused as expected but it includes great reviews on the development of hospital (Chapter 2), basic model and analysis about the current healthcare crisis and future scenario (Chapter 3), comparison of internal fit (strategy and structure) and external fit (strategy and environment) on healthcare institution's performance. The 3rd part of this book covers different entrepreneurial actions. I like the one in Chapter 7 about "The Nashville Phenomenon" from this part. The last part talks about integrating strategy which I think it is just OK.

Twins, Susan & Christine Pratt take jobs as counselors at a summer camp. When they find out that someone is out to destroy the camp they decide to investigate and end up switching places as well. This is one of the first times these girls switch places to solve crimes in the series. It is a great story filled with adventure, romance and fun. This is a great light-hearted mystery for younger kids.

I found this book to provide an awesome amount of background as well as an uplifting source of strategies for addressing the massive changes going on in our world today. We are so dependent on oil! While many people fear change Michael tells a story that offers plenty of reason and inspiration and practical ideas for how to start rebuilding the systems that are not working all around us. The wonderful emerging hopeful message in this book is that there is a better way to live than the way we are living today!

Authors Debbie Nunley and Karen Jane Elliot have been on a quest to find those who are passionate about both fine dining and historic preservation, and Maryland provided them with the best opportunities to visit restaurants steeped in both fine food and rich history. A Taste Of Maryland History: A Guide To Historic Eateries And Their Recipes thus serves two distinct purposes: as a survey of Maryland historic establishments it provides would-be travelers with a guide to fine historic eating houses across the state, providing an entire page of history to compliment the authors' descriptions of the atmosphere and offerings they experienced today. And as a cookbook, it provides a fine collection of these signature dishes, selecting several from each establishment which have been adapted to home cook proportions. Enjoy Pan-Roasted Scallops with Ginger and Lemon Grass or Buffalo-Style Pizza in a fine gathering. Highly recommended both for Maryland history buffs, cooks, and armchair travelers alike.

The impressive thing about this text is its format: every chapter devotes a section to the history of the probem, treatment options, post-op rehab & outcomes. This allows the reader a well-balanced look at each topic. It's more than a "how I do it" book.
