Rice Bowl Women is a fabulous collection of stories, old and new, that speak of the warrior spirit in every woman. From ancient tales of China, where women train in the skills of sword and sorcery, to more modern tales of women achieving power and realizing their inherent strength during the cultural reforms of communism. This book explores the tradition of the swordswoman in the far East, cultures more widely known for their subservient feminine roles.

I love this series! Connie gets a job as a receptionist in the big city. Living with her Aunt Bet and juggling a social life, she finds herself tangled up in more than just the switchboard cords. She finds a mystery to solve that will change the course of her career and life. This is the second book in the series.

A Fresh Approach to Writing

In his instructional manual, The Right Words: The Grace of Writing, author Blair Adams takes basic composition class to a new level. I appreciated the book immensely, as I always had a problem with the dry instruction typical of English Grammar and Comp class. How were we supposed to produce a sensitive, meaningful essay after spending hours dissecting paragraphs and sentences and labeling their parts? The assignment was comperable to being asked to produce a living, breathing frog after slicing it apart in biology class. The Right Words teaches how to use words and structure to make writing live, breathe, and dance off the page into a reader's mind and heart. In short, Adams revives the lost art of true communication. Good writing effectively communicates the writer's self-expression to produce a work that connects with and speaks to others. Adams gives several guidelines that help budding writers to comfortably master the thinking and writing process. The book itself is a model of the principles that it encourages. In distinct contrast to most writing textbooks, The Right Words provides witty, enjoyable instruction. I highly recommend it for anyone, including children.

Few travel books have drawn me in like this one. Insightful prose coupled to splendid photos spark the imagination. The Blair brothers are unique for the sensitivity and spirit with which they immerse themselves in their surroundings. A must-read for Indonesiaphiles. A great read for anyone.

I live in the area this book covers, and was curious to see if the book was a good overview of this area's riding. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to quickly discover some of the road ride gems in the NC High Country. A great, and more efficient, alternative to asking at bikes shops or lurking on local internet biking forums.

Roan Mountain; A Passage Into a Very Good Book
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-09
I was first turned onto Ms. Wilsons book by a co-worker of hers and mine both with the state parks system here in tennessee. I having lived in the area of Roan Mountain was fascinated with the concept of a book that told the history of the peak and thought that I knew all there was to know about the mountain. Knowing Jennifer somewhat personally I called her and got a copy sent to me, she herself had autographed it and put a little message in it for me. I started reading it almost immediately. I waxed off the first 2 chapters during my lunch hour, and finished the rest of it that same night. I found the book to be not only accurate, but informative as to the beginnings and some of the happenings around both the mountain and the state park that is located there. If anyone were to ask me "what book should I read as general interest in appalachia?" I would steer them in the direction of Roan Mountain; A Passage of Time. It ceartainly tops the list as one of my favorite books.

Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE ROARING 20 as an elegant tribute to our flying great-grandmothers.

1929 was a glorious year for the spills & thrills in the history of flight culminating in the National Air Races & Aeronautical Exposition in Cleveland, Ohio.

It will also feature a 9 day, 2,800 mile women's cross-country air race from Santa Monica in California to Ohio. These 20 aviatrixes, including Amelia Earhart, Evelyn "Bobbi" Trout, Mary Von Mach, Florence "Pancho" Barnes, Edith Foltz, Mary Haizlip & Opal Kunz, will fly by day & camp by night surviving many adventures & much excitement! One pilot with crash & burn, others will drop out & the death-defying few will make it to the finish line.

As you read THE ROARING 20, with its newspaper headlines & photos, you will be transported back to a very different time & into a crowd of remarkable women.

This book was recommended by a friend, who lives in Australia. It was history to him, as it was to my husband. My husband enjoyed it, said it was hard to put down. He was in the British Forces.

The book was in excellent condition, clean - looked new!

Fast service.

My Baby Loves This Book!

I picked this up by chance in a book sale at my local grocery store. I had never heard of it. It is my 9-month old's favorite book. Anytime she is cranky, I pull out "Ruby and Fred" and she is all smiles! She will pull all the books of the bookshelf until she finds this book and will sit and bang on it until we read it to her. She loves to hear us making a parrot voice and she really loves the section where Chita gets in the house! She has loved this book for several months now. She is also content to sit and look at the pictures- she loves the style and the art. No other book holds her attention like "Ruby and Fred!"

Paintings of the Balkan war zone accompany text by Yockey in this exceptional example of war photography which also is recommended for students of Balkan history. The paintings reflect observations of culture as serving as examples of art history in motion: Ruined Landscapes deserves a place in both art and history library collections as a moving set of portraits of the Balkan war experience.
