This is the first book I truly believe is worthy of being called a "classic" in some time. As my first Meg Hutchinson novel, I fell madly in love with it from the beginning and found it difficult to leave alone until the very end. It is more than a pleasure to find a current British author who writes period novels in a Dickens style about the impoverished poor rising above some very oppressive odds.

This story starts out in 1830s England when women have no power once they are married, and their husbands often treat them viciously. Saran Chandler is a beautiful teenager whose widowed mother married a drunken scumbag named Enoch Jacobs for the money their father left them. Eventually, after he's drank up everything, he enslaves her, Saran, and her little sister until he sells the two of them in a tavern, and he would do it to Saran as well, except he drowns while sleepwalking.

A young boy named Luke Hipton becomes Saran's friend, and together they both go in search of her mother and little sister, encountering hardships galore, finally settling in a dreary little industry town called Wednesbury. There are tons of heartache for these two young, penniless friends, but they are also blessed with the strong ties of loyal friendship from others because of their honesty. It is there in the unlikely Wednesbury that things go from bad to worse, but then miraculously change for the best for all concerned. The action never stops in this fast paced novel. You come to care for all the good characters, hate the truly evil ones, and root for both Saran and Luke all the way. It's a wonderfully told story you won't want to miss, and the wrapups bring the sweetest, smile evoking surprises. Saran was an ambitious mover and shaker, building her own empire from nothing but sheer determination and a few penniless friends in a world where English women once had no say, crushing all her and her friends' adversaries. You go girl! Rewards of reading Sixpenny Girl? Priceless.

This book provides one of the most user-friendly methods of presenting the night sky that I've ever used. First, the viewpoint is for a person at 21 degrees north, so really shows the sky as you would see it in Hawaii. Second, the book is spiral bound, so it will lie open and flat when you're using it. Third, it's large enough so that several people can share it easily. Fourth, a simple, one-page table tells you which page is appropriate for a particular viewing direction, date and time.

The body of the book is divided into 12 sets of 8 pages - two pages for each of the main compass directions. One page (the basic page) depicts the night sky and repeats the information about the direction, the time of night, and dates it's appropriate for. The *other* page (this, to me, is a delightful innovation) is translucent. It outlines the various constellations. When the translucent page is laid over the basic page, it's very easy to find those constellations. The back of the previous basic page contains interesting information about what you can see. The text is clearly and gracefully written.

This is a wonderful introductory book to astronomy - it focuses on the pleasure of watching the sky and provides as a marvellously easy-to-use tool for 'newbies' of any age to find familiar or new constellations.

Sparrow Airways is either on the brink of something big or in big trouble. But employees and even management can't seem to agree on which it is. John Putnam Thatcher of the Sloan Guarantee Trust would normally let them figure it out on their own, but not with some the bank's money on the line. And when a labor negotiation ends in murder, he's even more determined to figure out if this investment is going to lead to more trouble.

I always enjoy these books, even if they are out of print. Worth reading and even rereading.

Enjoyable and Edifying Short Tales

Review Date: 2007-07-27
"The Spiritually Beneficial Tales of Paul, Bishop of Monembasia" is a charming collection of 23 separate English translations of medieval Greek short tales, all products of the Middle Byzantine Empire. Each tale is only several pages long but in that short space, each one gives a fascinating story with a strong moral lesson. Many tales relate how unsavory characters, such a robbers, proud monks, immoral priests or even a pimp are humbled and choose to change the course of their lives. Many tales are very suspenseful and tell stories of those kidnapped by pirates or wealthy widows fleeing from undesired suitors.

The translator and editor of this book, Joyhn Wortley, also provides the reader with a detailed introduction to this genre and author, and exceptional notes for each of the tales. If you are interested in tales, edifying stories, medieval literature, or simply Byzantine history, you will find this book worthwhile.

this manual is highly recommended if you bought Whitten's General Chemistry text,by the way, that's really a nice textbook.
This manual is also very good. Lot of experiments organized in to many categories. But i think it will be better if it has more information on the lab instruments.

Enhanced for the reader with a history of Judson Bishop

Ably edited by Newell L. Chester for the modern reader, The Story Of A Regiment is the narrative account and history by Judson W. Bishop of the Minnesota Veteran Volunteer Infantry's Second Regiment that fought all through the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. This superbly presented edition is enhanced for the reader with a history of Judson Bishop and additional and informative chapters by Chester. This was a Union Army regiment that was awarded eight Medals of Honor for one action near Nolansville, Tennessee; participated in the first major Union victory at Mill Springs, Kentucky; charged up Missionary Ridge out of Chattanooga, Tennessee; earned General George Thomas acclimation as "The Rock of Chickamauga". The Second Regiment fought all four, bloody years of the Civil War and finally returned home to Minnesota intact. The Story Of A Regiment is an invaluable, much appreciated, and very welcome addition to Civil War Studies collections, and "must" reading for all Civil War buffs.
