Ably edited by Newell L. Chester for the modern reader, The Story Of A Regiment is the narrative account and history by Judson W. Bishop of the Minnesota Veteran Volunteer Infantry's Second Regiment that fought all through the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. This superbly presented edition is enhanced for the reader with a history of Judson Bishop and additional and informative chapters by Chester. This was a Union Army regiment that was awarded eight Medals of Honor for one action near Nolansville, Tennessee; participated in the first major Union victory at Mill Springs, Kentucky; charged up Missionary Ridge out of Chattanooga, Tennessee; earned General George Thomas acclimation as "The Rock of Chickamauga". The Second Regiment fought all four, bloody years of the Civil War and finally returned home to Minnesota intact. The Story Of A Regiment is an invaluable, much appreciated, and very welcome addition to Civil War Studies collections, and "must" reading for all Civil War buffs.

The excellent essays in this collection support Jerome Bruner's theories on narrative being the basis for all human communication. Written for English composition educators, this book is full of ideas for engaging students with autobiographical writing (supported by research) and the seemingly inborn desire to tell stories. I would recommend the book for all who are interested in the reading/writing connection, Bartholomae and Petrosky, and innovative methods of teaching writing.

The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Honolulu has been a mainstay resource for those requisite "history of surfing" photos that compliment the early chapters of many a surfing book and far-reaching historical article. Under the informed and perceptive eye of DeSoto Brown, archivist and collections manager, the museum has assembled a best-of collection of the surf-related photographs in its collection (c. 1890-1960), and it is a treasure trove of wonderful and evocative images, many of them never before published. Brown's captions, meanwhile, include great info and anecdote about the photos, making this a must-have addition to every serious surf-culture library. - Drew Kampion for The Surfer's Path [...]

... from a time when life was simpler. I loved the Little House Books as a child, and now as an adult reader, I adore Sweet Annie. The amount of detail that Ms. Morris puts into her writing allows the reader to create vivid images in their minds as they read. I was transported immediately back to the day where neighbors banded together to help one another, and families worked, played and stayed together. What a soothing read at a time of electronic gadget overload and desensitization to the every day negativity of the present that we live in. Great for all ages, I loved it as well as my eleven year old daughter. We look forward to more from this gifted new author.

This is an excellent book. Bishop did an incredible amount of research through archival letters, diaries, reminiscenses, etc. of members of the Confederate Tennessee Brigade. This unit fought a bloody trail through the Civil War from 1861 to Lee's surrender in 1865. By the time it reached Appomattox the Brigade had been reduced to fragments. Much of the text is in the words of those who experienced those years, and Bishop ties this together with masterful prose. It is a great read.

This collection of essays deals with a useful array of topics that will be of special interest to those of the Anglican theological tradition. This book serves as a needed balance to the biography from MacCulloch that paints Cranmer as a rabid protestant with no real interest in the beliefs of the early church. It also helps to dispel many of the misconceptions about Cranmer's sacramental theology that are widely held by both "anglo-catholic" and puritan "evangelical" alike. In these essays Cranmer emerges as the chief reformer of a church that he envisioned as one founded on the Scriptures, the ancient Fathers, and right reason. Rather than being against the concept of a "via media" church (as MacCulloch claims) Cranmer is the very author of it.
