A Piece of History

The Ohio Theatre was built by Loew's for United Artists studios in the late 1920s and still stands there today. A beautiful
building, the Spanish Baroque interior is an amazing sight to see with its ornate details and plush seating. The moving organ
chamber and daunting stage area now exhibit live performances and in the summer are featured in CAPA's movie series for classic
films.
This book commemorates an amazing piece of history right in the heart of Columbus. The building was meant to be torn down, an event that would have taken away years of fond memories and history. The first film shown at the Ohio Theatre was The Divine Lady, Greta Garbo's only lost film. Stars like Jean Harlow and Conrad Nagel made appearances there. Judy Garland played ping pong with local boys in one of the many leisure rooms after one of her appearances. Over time, the scenery around the theatre changed, but the theater did not. Unfortunately, the public changed too, and after several decades, the property was sold and was scheduled to be demolished. But then something wonderful happened. The public began to protest and rise up against such drastic action. They raised tens of thousands of dollars to save the property and invested even more time and money to restore it back to its original splendor.
The Theatre could be compared with the Cinema Paradiso in the film of the same name, only this one is real. And it was saved. Here is it's story told through photographs and by those involved in its history.

A stimulating but never overpowering history textbook

As the author's name and title suggests, this history text book is written by a Catholic priest and it is therefore a Catholic
perspective of history that is presented. We are told that "'The Old World and America' tells the story of the Western World
from the beginning of mankind - through ancient times, Greek and Roman civilizations, the comming of Christ and founding
of the Catholic Church, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the discovery and exploration of America, the 'New World'".
The course is aimed at grades 5 - 8, and it should take the average child about 3 years to obtain a good understanding of
the material presented. The great advantage of this text book is the clarity with which the information is presented. Each
period of history under consideration receives an interesting yet brief (but never skimpy) treatment. The child's interest
is stimulated so that the text book can be used as a launching pad for further reading about the particular period of history
being studied. My family does not live in America but, with few adaptations, the book is just as relevant to our own country.
A universally excellent textbook ideally suited for homeschooling !

Nicola Thorne back in top form!

Review Date: 2008-10-25
I remember when a few years ago Nicola Thorne informed on the jacket of her latest book that due to a car accident she would
never again be able to do a work of fiction.
At the time, I still had a few books of her large production unread, but the news made me infinitely sad. Firstly, because of the author herself, her health and how she was doing. Secondly, being an egotist, the thought of there being no more new Nicola Thorne novels to look forward to.
Then, suddenly, I discovered her new book here on Amazon. Three days after, it landed in my post box and the next morning at 05.30 I finished it.
Nicola Thorne has indicated that this might be a book a bit different from the rest of her production. Perhaps. It is surely different, in as much as we learn through Eleanor's story what really happened to the author and how profoundly it changed her life. But qualitywise, the book is no different from the rest of Ms Thorne's excellent production. The book is, however, purely fiction, apart from the accident itself and Eleanor's hospitalization - and Eleanor's cat Melody, who is based on the author's beloved and eccentric pet Pinky!
"On a day like today" could only have been written by Nicola Thorne. Her insight into life's different circumstances, people revealing their true selves. Into values, or lack of them. Into life. Nobody else could have written it so to the point and mind-opening.
From the first pages, describing the horror of the accident, the days in intensive care and the long weeks of hospitalization - I was hooked. Not pleasant reading, one would think, but through the author's pen it was actually made interesting. Realistic to the point of being rather pragmatic. No moaning about the pain, the helplessness, the humiliation - simply telling it as it was.
As Eleanor is finally allowed to return to her home, she must adapt to an entirely new life. In front of her lie months, probably years of treatment and partly healing, since she knows she will never be completely the same. Used to be a strong woman in charge of her life, Eleanor must face being dependent on other people's help. However, a main joy takes place as a direct result of the accident when her daughter Alex comes to stay. Mother and daughter have always had a somewhat strained relationship, but the accident changes this and brings the two closer together than ever.
I will not go into further detail, only urge new and old readers not to miss this one. A fine, thoughtful, wise and splendidly written book by one of England's all time greatest novelists.
Nicola Thorne will probably not be writing as much as before. Still, I dare hope she finds some new ideas so tempting that she simply cannot resist!

On U.S. Bishops Genealogy of Apostolic Succession

Ordinations of U.S. Catholic Bishops, 1790-1989 : A Chronological List by Charles Bransom is an interesting study in what
the Catholic church teaches as "Apostolic Succession" (the concept that every real bishop has succeeded by the physical laying
on of hands all the way back to the apostles). It actually makes for some rather dry reading...but as a historical document
it is outstanding. No other work of its kind exists that brings together an entire episcopal "genealogy" between two covers.
The only question is - given the fact that every Catholic bishop in this country has records stored somewhere on their ordinations
- why this book? What real purpose does it serve? To me that question is never properly answered. However - it does not
detract from its historical significance or value to those interested in the subject.

We're from the West, but the Bible is from the East!

What does it mean to "heap coals of fire" on someone's head (Romans 12:20)? Those of us in the Western world might find it
an attempt to burn and hurt. But we don't understand that the Bible is an Eastern book! Just as we have idioms and cultural
practices, such was the case in the lands and times of the Bible. Coals on the head would warm the person...it would be
an expression of the love of God. K.C. Pillai gives plain, clear understanding of many such seemingly problematic scriptures
-- scriptures we Westerners would never understand, not being familiar with the culture of the lands and times of the Bible.
God wants us to understand His Word, and K.C. Pillai's books on Orientalisms brings great understanding of cultural sayings
and practices in both the Old and New Testaments! V.P. Weirwille, a wonderful man of God and the author of "Power for Abundant
Living", points out that one of the things any student of the Bible must realize is that in order to allow the Bible to
interpret itself (which it does!), we must read it in light of Orientalisms.

The controversial figure of Bishop Pike is fading is the past but this book reads like a novel. Whatever view one takes of
the fascinating events following his son`s suicide, they are told with a very moving openness. Arthur Ford and other mediums
gave spectacular readings to Pike following the poltergeists episodes. Truly interesting and food for thought.

MARCUS DID A VERY THOROUGH JOB OF NOT ONLY SCRIPTURE SEARCH, BUT OF PULLING THE SCRIPTURES TOGETHER TO GIVE A CLEAR PICTURE
OF WHAT OUR RIGHTFUL HERITAGE IS AS A CHRISTIAN! I KNEW MOST OF THE SCRIPTURES, BUT HE PULLED IT ALL TOGETHER, SO THAT I
GAINED MUCH INSIGHT THAT I HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN LACKING IN. BUT THE BEST PART IS, HE TAUGHT HOW TO ACTUALLY TAKE AHOLD OF
THAT HERITAGE.
