The Case of the Stuttering Bishop

Bishop William Mallory of Sydney, Australia visits Perry Mason about a manslaughter case. Could a sudden emotional shock cause stuttering? Perry calls Paul Drake to see if the bishop is genuine (Chapter I). They find where Mallory is staying, but there is a mysterious attack on Mallory in his hotel room. An ambulance came for him, then another ambulance came for him! They track down the woman who visited him (Chapter II). Her story about a personal ad checks out (Chapter III). But the bishop got on a ship bound for Australia (Chapter IV). Julia Branner, formerly Mrs. Oscar Brownley, visits Perry and tells of her past life and what she wants (Chapter V). Perry visits Renwold C. Brownley and they discuss the case (Chapter VI). An early morning phone call wakes Perry with the message that a woman has shot and killed Renwold C. Brownley (Chapter VII)!

Perry finds that Julia Branner had gone to the waterfront, and saw another woman shoot Brownley. Perry tells her to not answer questions and he'll try to help her (Chapter VIII). Julia Branner was arrested for murder, Mallory disappeared from his ship (Chapter IX). Della's impersonation of Janice Seaton draws out two private investigators (Chapter X). Perry meets the granddaughter of Brownley, and finds Victor Stockton, one of the two private investigators, with a scheme that will trap Perry in a crime! Perry meets Philip Brownley, the grandson, who tells what he knows (this substantiates what a witness saw). When Perry interviews Julia Branner in jail he gets an unpleasant surprise. Paul Drake found a yachtsman who visited Mallory (Chapter XII).

Perry visits Hamilton Burger to explain his actions. Burger gives Perry little time to justify his story. It doesn't look good for Perry and his client (Chapter XIII). The preliminary examination of Julia Branner begins in Chapter XIV, this reviews the known facts about the shooting. Perry notes the strange facts: if the shooter ran away, and Brownley was dead, who drove the car off the wharf? Perry is in an impossible situation. If Brownley drove off the wharf, he was not shot dead by Julia Branner (Chapter XV). A chance remark by Della Street puts a new light on one person's activities the night of the murder. Perry plays this hand and it pays off (Chapter XVI). They find out what happened to Bishop Mallory (Chapter XVII). Perry explained what happened, and why Julia Branner refused to talk (Chapter XVIII). The next chapter concludes this case.
In this story Perry was very close to jail and disbarment. He was involved in more action than in other stories. This 1936 novel reflects the outlook of tts day.

Great point by point Catechism
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-11
This book is a great point-by-point Catechism for those just beginning to learn about Christianity and Catholicism. While it starts a little simplistically for someone already familiar with the Church's teachings, it does give excellent explanations for those new to the faith. This would be a great gift for a child preparing for their first communion; along with the Catechism of the Catholic Church (which this book is an explanation of) it might even serve well for teenagers in preparation for confirmation, especially if they are poorly catechized. This book is also a great start for introducing friends to the Church who are curious but unaware of what the Church believes.

Scholarly yet readable account of the Church and farm labor.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-23
The author is to be congratulated for this scholarly yet readable account of the involvement of the American Catholic Church with the struggle of farm workers for social justice. Based upon solid archival research, including access to the records of the Bishops' Ad hoc Committee on Farm Labor and the papers of Msgr. George Higgins, this is a condensed version of Dr. Prouty's doctoral dissertation from The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, DC. Unlike many re-worked dissertations for publication, this account is a coherent and well written study that also tells a compelling story. His sympathy for Cesar Chavez, a hero of almost saintly proportions to many Hispanic-Americans, is not blind to Chavez's shortcomings in building a strong farm workers union that could sustain itself beyond the heady days of boycotts and hunger strikes of the 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Prouty also discusses the roles of the three churchmen who, as members of the Bishops' Ad hoc Committee on Farm Labor in the 1970s, were crucial to the accomplishments of the nascent United Farm Workers (UFM) union in receiving labor contracts from growers, many of them Catholic, as well as the passage of significant legislation by the State of California. These men, Cardinal Roger Mahoney, the Bishop Joseph Donnelly of Connecticut, and the aforementioned Msgr. Higgins, strongly supported the farm workers when many of their clerical colleagues were indecisive or even hostile.

LISTEN, LENNY, I STUDIED THIS CLOSELY A QUARTER CENTURY AGO

and still study it and find its definitions of just cause and just war (just reasons to go to war and just conduct in warfare) to be more crucial today than ever.

Sure, this was written when nuclear war with the USSR was promoted our greatest concern and reason for funding the warmakers. But now that we go through the latest reason for being in Iraq without yet getting the truth, we need to contemplate carefully this important document by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of a generation ago. Nowadays they are too afraid of bankruptcy for the perversion of a few clergy to speak out as prophetically as we need right now today.

This document will bring you to the correct conclusion that no Catholic can go fight in Iraq, etc. There is no just reason for going to war and there is no just conduct of the war. Indiscriminate warfare in particular is condemned, yet the well respected British medical journal the Lancet, after a careful and dangerous comprehensive survey in the field estimates we have killed up to a million Iraqis. Just look at our genocide of Fallujah and targetting innocent civilians, mothers and children, attempting to flee our horror and our terrorizing their people.

Please get and study this book, now under a dollar, plus shipping. It reveals the theological and moral truths which absolutely condemn our current very profitable warmongering.

Then get anything by the Reverend Father John Dear, SJ, who is not afraid to speak theological truth to wordly powers and dominations.

Tall on the Outside - Tall on the Inside!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-14
The folks in Earl Gladstone Hunts early life helped shape this East Tennessee leviathan - a giant, a bridge builder, a preacher in the Methodist itinerant ministry - one who occupied the episcopal office for twenty-four years. He is also an educator - college president, and evangelist - President of the Foundation for Evangelism. Throughout his ministry his central theme was telling the message of Jesus Christ, His birth, life and teachings, sacrificial death and resurrection, to an anxious, disoriented world.

In the "Bridge Builder" chapter, Hunt is likened to a bridge with tensile strength allowing traffic in both directions. The biographer relates a number of areas that seemed almost impossible to bridge. Yet with respect for those with whom he worked, he diplomatically built those bridges.

While driving on icy roads, if one overcorrects in any direction, it could bring disaster. Bishop Hunt has steered with a strong, steady hand through many treacherous roads. Racism was addressed all across his tenure but he names the homosexual issue as the one that stimulated the most mail response. Hunger, the Bomb, disintegration of family life, drugs, poverty, housing, struggle for freedom, excesses of affluence, and he even addressed the process of episcopal elections. He considered the most important assignment of his career the task of working with a committee and preparing a statement that would reflect the needs of Wesleyan tradition in the contemporary world.

His experience as a College President, his commitment to evangelism and his visibility within the church was providential for the Foundation for Evangelism. The chairs of evangelism in the seminaries will insure that his contribution will live in the lives of seminarians for decades to come.

Dr. James Logan has done a masterful job of reporting on one of the heros in the faith. Bishop Hunt is not only tall on the outside - he is tall on the inside. Would that there were hundreds more like him!

Awesome book - great to give as a guide for those who are unsure of their faith. We've handed out a few to family and friends. It answers so many questions. I especially like the evolution vs. creation chapter. It's a short and direct book. I strongly recommend this one.

This book is a favorite of my six month old granddaughter. Because it is small and lightweight she can pick it up herself to investigate it. However, it has a hard cover, so it doesn't disintegrate when she chews it. The popout pages are especially interesting to her. She enjoys touching and feeling as well as looking at them and their colorful illustrations. Soon the simple text will introduce her to the Nativity story in an appropriate manner for even the youngest "reader".

Review Date: 2006-01-06
This new volume by Bishop Paul is worthy reading not only for Christmas, but for all the year. His meditations on the days of the week, the seasons, love, stillness, and prayer are instructive and inspiring in any season. They lovingly explore the multiple facets of each subject under consideration, illuminating the depths of the wisdom and love of God through His hand in creation and in the history of man. The Biblical narratives are pure poetic delight, with rhyme and meter that will, with repetition, make them beloved by both children and adults. This little book of verse may be employed profitably in silent meditation, or read joyfully aloud in celebration of the events and insights contained therein. Well worth reading!
