Awesome Compendium

I am truly astounded that this book is not ranked higher in terms of sales. This is an exceptional compendium of disciplinary (including psychologists, chemists, biologists, and physicists) perspectives on a very important, relatively unexplored topic: time. I HIGHLY recommend this book for people interested in exploring more completely the problematics resultant from a linearly, determinsitc conception of time in scientific exploration.

My favorite of the Dramatized Philip Marlowes

I purchased these audiobooks within a week of purchasing "Farewell my Lovely". The Big Sleep" and "The High Window" are my favorites. I love the plot, the wit (beautifully excecuted by Ed Bishop) The stories are really interesting and fun. It is unique to rely on your audiotory sense in a world usually focusing on the visual. These are a must to own for the Raymond Chandler, Philip Marlowe or Mystery theme fan. Personally my primary reason was for my favorite actor Ed Bishop being the star!! His voice and the delivery of each line with pinpoint precision is music to the ears :0)

Alot of folklore that may be more acurrate than the latest,"archaeology digs".

Review Date: 2007-08-27
the authors main source seems to be Gregory of Tours and so some of the tales seem to be more folklore than scholarly interpretation and there are no archaeology finds to prove a point. Also there are no maps.Still it is a vibrant interpretation of Gregory's work and the author uses alot of contemporary sources as well,in addition she has visited most of the sites mentioned.the book gives a good description of the fragmented kingdoms of Europe that were eventually (through much bloodshed) wielded into modern day France.Apparently the Franks were a supertribe who grew to major importance when they were recruited as a military force by what was left of the Roman Empire. The Roman Pope officially sanctioned the Franks and they adopted Christianity during Clovis' reign.(Needless to say but well documented in the book there were scores of "pagan relapses"by the franks and their subjects. The Roman pope wanted to be rid of the Lombards so he hired a "bigger dog",the Franks,a tribe who would not be well juggled by any authority of God or man. I found it interesting that Islam was somewhat welcomed initially during the middle ages by alot of these petty kingdoms.Rulers used Islam as a pawn(as they also used Christianity)to promote their own interests.Charles Martels' victory at Tours seems somewhat watered down as I realized that some of these European kingdoms may have had more fear of Charles the Hammer than the so-called"Muslim hordes".Insane kings.evil queens, religious hypocrites, they're all here,as well as the shining nobility the true unifiers, both religious and secular, from this period. The author obviously has a deep respect and knowlege of classical Greek and Roman works.

Locked Room Mystery at Sea
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-11
Greeley's Bishop John Blackwood Ryan is famous for solving locked room mysteries. In Bishop at Sea the room is not only locked, it is guarded by two Marines and is on the USS Langley, an aircraft carrier at sea. Blackie solves the puzzle while the reader is treated to a very suspenseful time.
Blackie comes to the ship assigned by his boss the Cardinal to conduct the sacrament of Confirmation while solving the strange disappearance of crew members. The Cardinal's nephew, Captain Dave Cronin, is Commander of the Langley. His career may be ruined by the scandal on his ship.
Greeley's talent for description shines in this book. Although I have never been on a aircraft carrier, I now feel that I have. I can picture the cramped quarters and the maze of corridors that make one lost. I also hope to avoid landing on a carrier since it is "nothing more than a controlled crash".
Blackie's humor is delightful, for example: the sailor "saluted like he was a Swiss Guard and I the Pope (at least)"; and "Congress would choke on their gin martinis". The Bishop at Sea also periodically includes Greeley's wonderful view of Christianity as having a gracious and forgiving God who understands and loves humanity.
The Bishop at Sea is beautifully written story with charming characters, and an intriguing plot. I recommend it for a rainy day escape.

The title says it all.

The title describes this book perfectly. The author eventually became the Senior Bishop in the Christian Methodist Episcopal denomination, a black denomination with 3000 mainly small churches mainly in the Southern U.S., and retired after 50 years in ministry.

This book was written specifically as a "training manual" by a CME bishop for first-time CME pastors. Some of it is specific to CME-church culture, polity, organization and practices. However, a lot will apply to any first-time pastor. The CME denomination has been undergoing significant change for the past 2 decades, so about half the congregations are "old-fashioned, straight-laced, traditional Methodist" in their practices and the other half are pentecostal.

Topics in Chapter 1 IN THE BEGINNING are: Getting Ready for the New Church; What Should You Carry With You?; After You Are There; Pastor, You need to Check Off Your Job List ("Let me run over the Pastor's job in planning and carrying out the [worship] service.")

Chapter II is THE PASTOR-PRIEST: Receiving Members; The Baptismal; Holy Communion; Doing the Wedding; Visiting the Sick; Preaching the Funeral.

Chapter III is THE PASTOR ON THE JOB. It talks about MANAGEMENT--budgeting, developing a program, conducting meetings, etc.

This book is required for a course taken by most people studying to enter the CME clergy, so it should be available directly from the publisher. It does not have an ISBN or Library of Congress number.

The story of a remarkable man

Some live long and interesting lives without ever being recognized or having their biography noted. Thanks to Father Foley, the story of Bishop Healy is available in this fine volume. This priest broke many barriers in his long service to the church, the country, and the people whom he served. He rose from birth as a slave in Georgia, his father being an Irishman and his mother a slave. Sent to New England in order to get an education, he established himself and led a full life in which he contributed a number of extraordinary experiences. We are blessed that someone took the time to tell his story.

A great resource

In 1843, Sweden witnessed the advent of a new religious leader, Eric Janson. Identifying himself as a new prophet, Janson led many people away from the established Lutheran Church. Coming under persecution from the authorities, Janson and some 1,100 followers emigrated to the United States, and founded Bishop Hill, a religious commune on the prairies of Illinois. (This was the first mass exodus of Swedes to North America.)

This book is about Bishop Hill, and is an excellent resource for anyone interested in it. Instead of being organized chronologically, as a history of the colony, this book is instead an examination of the colony itself. It begins with a history of the Jansonists, and their exodus to Illinois, but it quickly moves beyond life in the colony, its industries and architecture, and the many experiences of those who lived their. Along the way, the reader is treated to many interesting pictures and maps, and reminisces of people who actually lived their, including Capt. Eric Johnson, son of the colony's founder.

Overall, I found this to be a great resource. As might me expected from a book designed for tourists and enthusiasts, it is not as organized as it should be. But, that said, there is a great deal of information in this book that I have not seen anywhere else. So, if you are interested in Eric Janson and Bishop Hill, then this is one book that you really must get. I highly recommend it!
