The book is a must for readers interested in adaptive optics
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-25
The book does an excellent job of describing the basic principles and the practice of adaptive optics for astronomical applications. The author was a pioneer in adaptive optics and in the 1970s he built the first system capable of compensating a large astronomical telescope at visible wavelengths. The book gives a good history of adaptive optics including an excellent bibliography. Wavefront sensors, correctors, laser beacons, and wavefront reconstruction and control systems are described. Current adaptive optics programs are described and future prospects are discussed. I had the good fortune of working with the author at the time the first adaptive optics system was built and the author conveys in this book the excitement we felt about adaptive optics at that time. While the book is very specialized and technical, and the number of readers who will enjoy the book is limited, if you are interested in adaptive optics the reading of this book is a must.

This encyclopedia explains the development of air warfare in the 20th century (this Vol goes up to 1945 -- its follow up Vol picks up from there and goes to current days).

It analyzes each major historical development, explaining how regional and global events changed military aerospace. Chapters run typically 2-4 pages long. Text entries contain just about enough text material to do a decent job covering historical events without belaboring the issues. It gives itself the luxury of including anecdotes to help depict the human side vs. combat conditions or aircraft performance issues. There are lots of pictures (mostly B/W especially in Vol I), good-quality color plates (mostly half-page in size), and simple color maps to illustrate military strategies. Simplified aircraft stats are provided with the color plates.

I keep going back to this book to better understand how and why things happened. The information is concise and well organized, nicely presented on high-gloss paper, and well-written. I'm surprised to see no-one's ever written a review to this point for a book that deserves attention. You won't be disappointed if you're interested in military aerospace history. If you get Vol I, look for Vol II as well.

One of the best 1st person accounts of WWI aerial combat.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-19
This tells of the exploits of Billy Bishop. The highest scoring pilot of the British Empire, and of Canada in WWI. During his career, he was credited with 72 confirmed victories. Winged Warfare tells his story from when he first shipped overseas to Europe, until August of 1917 when he was sent back first to London to receive the Victoria Cross, and then back to Canada on leave. The highlight of the book for me was when he describes his attack on a German aerodrome near Cambrai. This is the raid for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military award. I just cannot recommend this book too much. It is a must have for everyone and and anyone interested in WWI aerial history.

digital poster and card collages, and the gray paintings
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.

So this book is pretty big, probably around coffee table book size, and very shiny (and if you get it from the right people it comes in a pretty industrially cool looking cardstock dust jacket-like box) and has a few billion color reproductions of Oehlen's digital collages for exhibition posters and cards and some of his gray paintings (which are just about fantastic).

There is of course an interesting big of writing in probably three languages that's hard to decode in the languages I know, English, and probably easier to understand if you know his native language, German. I have the feeling he translated the thing online or something. Anyway, it's a great book, probably better than you even think it's going to be.

A Commentary like no other

Review Date: 2008-06-15
The All of the Books of the Bible Commentary series written by author M.E. Rosson is one of the most easy to read, easy to understand commentaries of the Bible I have ever read. Written as if the author is speaking directly to you and telling you things about the scriptures that you quite possibly do not know. If you will read the chapters first and then read the commentary that is given, you will have a better understanding of what the Bible actually says. There will be more books in this series and I want to encourage you to purchase these books as they will become a prized possession in your personal library and I assure you that you will refer to them time and time again.

A very delightful overview of nature's destruction of a portion of Kalapana on the Island of Hawaii. The photography captures the essense of the destructive force loosed by the erupting volcano as well as the beauty of the flowing lava.

The "read" matches the photography making the book well worth the asking price.

Marcia L. Colish's AMBROSE'S PATRIARCHS is also an excellent survey which offers the only monograph-length study of the treatises of Ambrose of Milan, which developed an early ethics set for the laity in c. 340-397. College-level lay audiences will appreciate the study of Ambrose's patriarch treatises which were aimed at those outside the church.

America's Quilts and Coverlets
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-29
One of the most beautiful books ever published in the field of American decorative arts, America's Quilts and Coverlets is a comprehensive survey of a subject that is enjoying enormous popularity today, which is in great part due to the splendid exhibition of American quilts held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1971.

The main emphasis of this book is on patchwork and applique quilts, which are certainly some of the most expressive, colorful and even dynamic examples of artistry produced in our early American homes. However, much space is also given to other examples of the great variety and beautiful design of the bed coverings created by past generations of American women, including bed-rugs, linsey-woolsey coverlets, whole-cloth spreads, crewel work spreads, "white work" or trapunto, Overshot coverlets, summer and winter coverlets, Jacquard coverlets, candlewick spreads, stencil spreads, crazy quilts and some modern examples of patchwork and applique.

Heavily illustrated with 122 color plates and 472 black-and-white photographs of outstanding pieces in all categories from public and private collections throughout the country, many of which are published here for the first time. Accompanying the illustrations is a laymans nontechnical account of styles, materials and needlework. This is the first major work published in many years on the subject, and the beauty in the book speaks eloquently for itself.
