Camille Roman's ELIZABETH BISHOP'S WORLD WAR II - COLD WAR VIEW opens up intriguing new ways to understand this great poet.

Taking a cultural studies approach, Roman shines a bright light on Bishop's life and poems. She argues that Bishop was alienated from aspects of mainstream American culture--its militarism and social injustices. She shows that Bishop was a far more politically-engaged poet than one might think. The interpretation of such poems as "Roosters," "View of the Capitol from the Library of Congress," and "12 O'Clock News" are eye-opening and thought-provoking.

This is now an essential book for anyone interested in the ways Elizabeth Bishop's poems intersect with American cultural and political history.

This is an in-depth and insightful chronicling of Elizabeth Bishop's life and work during the "war years" and immediately following. Particularly interesting to me were portions of letters quoted and particulars regarding situations which were current at the time. Further, I am most pleased to see some recognition of a woman as a serious contender in the field of contemporary American literature. We should, as well, consider that the author of this work is a woman writing about a woman.

Amazing illustrations and incredibly informative and extensive

After having bought countless Osprey books about the different types of weapons used during WWII I got this monstrous compendium, and was a little disappointed that I didn't get it sooner. It is extremely comprehensive and very well illustrated with countless photographs to back up the illustrations. Very recommended (and it is value for money, too).

Unbiased accounts of each weapon make this a good read.

The book is organized into the following catergories(summarized for this review): Tanks, Vehicles, Artillery, Rockets, Infantry Weapons and Airplanes. Each category is then seperated Axis and Allies.

Almost all of the 1,500+ weapons covered in this book have an image most of them featuring a photograph. The book is a great cross reference guide for anyone who enjoys reading historical material.

Only a few weapon systems are not covered, most of these were prototypes. The German, American, British and Japanese turbine aircraft are covered. The accounts of these aircraft a very accurate with attention paid to how these weapons were or were not used. The photographs are of good quality considering the paper they were printed on. One great example of the depth of this book is it's coverage of Little David'. "The largest-calibre artillery piece of modern times" Sporting a calibre of 914mm, The US military originally designed the gun to test bombs. With the invasion of Japan approaching in 1944, the US wanted to use it to destroy Japanese fortifications. However before the project was completed, the war was over. The book features two images of this artillery piece, including a color image.

The best part of the book is the unbiased accounts of how the weapon was used and it's success. For this reason, the book has numerous book marks for quick reference.

I see no reason why you shouldn't buy this book, if you enjoy military history. Additionally since the book has no distasteful images of war, I feel it is suitable for any youth at least 10 years of age.

Each year in the United States alone, millions of dollars and as many hours are spent in an effort to discover the source(s) of unhappiness, feelings of inadequacy, addiction and other destructive mindsets. In his latest written work, The Enemy Inside Your Mind, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr., an accomplished spiritual leader, musician, and author, exposes the deceptive tactics of the devil.

In this thought and action provoking book, Bishop Morton unapologetically calls the devil out, uncovering the ruthless lies and mind games he uses to destroy God's most precious creation - His people.

Easy to read, simple to digest, The Enemy Inside Your Mind comes to life as a spiritual boot camp in book form. "Trainees" are provided practical, biblically-based strategies for identifying, confronting and conquering the enemy of the mind. Leading the spiritual battle against this most formidable foe, Bishop Morton takes the gloves off and personally delivers the enemy a devastating blow using the most powerful weapon in the universe - the word of God.

After experiencing this book, readers who have struggled to delineate lies and myths from the truth about generational curses, race, sexuality and more, will be empowered to effectively combat the deceptive devices that have captivated God's people for so long.

Bishop Morton is right on time with this book! We all have an enemy...someone determined to steal your dreams, your purpose and even your life. If you're glancing around, thinking you'll see him lurking in the shadows, you're looking in the wrong place. The deadly, determined enemy of your soul doesn't attack from the outside...he's much closer than that! His battleground is your mind. Bishop Morton knows first hand...he experienced an attack in 1998.

But God has not left any of us defenseless against this sworn enemy. God has given us the ultimate weapon: TRUTH! God's anointed Word. This book will teach you who you are in God, the enemy's power over your mind will be broken.

Bishop Morton's book will show you how to be free to live, to love, to succeed. It tells you how to be free to cast down stereotypes and the social constraints of society and become all that God intended you to be.

Who will determine your reality or your destiny? You...or your sworn enemy? Use Bishp Morton's book to arm yourself in the fight for your mind. Own its insights; practice its principles. And with God's help, chase away the enemy's lies, replacing them with the truth of God! Awesome book. Very powerful.

Great book! I am what the authors call a "Standard Analytic Epistemologist", and I'm finding it hard to escape their arguments. The book is intelligent, fair, and beautifully written. It is also funnier than most philosophy books (not very hard to do, I know). Epistemology and the Psychology of Human Judgment is not written to preach to those already converted to naturalism. Rather, it is an honest experiment in naturalism, in all of its multi-disciplinary splendor. In developing their version of naturalistic epistemology - called strategic reliabilism -- they expose contemporary epistemology for the insular field that it is. Highly recommended.

An extremely good book that describes what epistemology could be, as compared with the tedious academic exercise it has unfortunately become. As it stands, if traditional epistemology disappeared tomorrow, nobody outside of its small group of practitioners would notice or care.

Bishop & Trout's argument for a reorientation of epistemology is based in the "Aristotelian Principle" that in the long run, poor reasoning tends to lead to worse outcomes than good reasoning. That simple assertion licenses empirical testing of the relative goodness of competing reasoning strategies. It is also "a necessary precondition for the practical relevance of epistemology," because if better reasoning doesn't lead to better outcomes than bad reasoning does, then it wouldn't matter how we arrive at our beliefs, and epistemology in any form would be a pointless enterprise.

Reliabilism is the theory of epistemology that holds a belief to be justified if it results from some process of demonstrated reliability, one that has been shown to yield true beliefs. The purpose of this book is to make the case for something the authors call Strategic Reliabilism. SR is an epistemological theory that defines epistemic excellence as (1) efficient allocation of cognitive (reasoning, problem-solving) resources (2) to robustly reliable strategies, (3) applied to significant problems.

The goal is a more prescriptive, reason-guided epistemology, relevant to problem solving in the real world by offering practical recommendations about how to reason better and thus achieve better outcomes. It would be based in empirical research on the limitations and foibles of human reasoning and how to avoid or compensate for them. Strategic Reliabilism is not a theory of justification; its focus is on comparing reasoning strategies to identify the better ones so they can be used instead of ones that are less good. The importance of this effort can be seen in the enormous costs connected with poor reasoning. A patient with a positive result on a diagnostic test for cancer or AIDs needs good information about the likelihood that he actually has the disease. In fact, one study showed that only 18% of faculty and staff at Harvard Medical School were able to reason to the correct interpretation of a positive diagnostic test; the average estimated likelihood was 28 times too high.

"Ameliorative Psychology" is Bishop & Trout's term for the empirical discipline that searches for better reasoning strategies and, from the results of empirical tests, makes normative recommendations about how to reason better. The specific techniques described that have so far been found to improve reasoning include: Statistical Prediction Rules; thinking in terms of frequencies vs. probabilities in Bayesian problems; and recognition of common sources of bias and error (overconfidence, the interview effect, the generalized attribution error, lack of comparison in causal attribution, regression effects, leaping to plausible but ungrounded causal fictions for rare events). The many examples of these common problems in reasoning are highly interesting and troubling, especially as they show up in professionals who you assume would know better.

Traditional epistemology (referred to SAE: Standard Analytic Epistemology) emphasizes knowledge defined as justified true belief. But it provides no guidance about how to arrive at that worthy goal. SAE emphasizes a priori intuition as the method of evaluating clever examples involving strange hypothetical situations. B&T argue that these word games make little contact with real-world problems, that such intuitions are not, in fact, a priori, and that there is no evidence that the intuitions of philosophers produce trustworthy judgments about epistemic matters. SAE has failed to deliver.

This is a terrific book, one that offers a meaningful future for epistemology, joining it with scientific psychology to create a specialty with something of real value to offer the world. Whether it will be received that way by philosophers is another question entirely, although one can always dream.

Animals and plants from a Hawaiian garden teach morals (i.e. appreciate differences, vanity is harmful, sharing is good for your soul). Beautiful full-page illustrations of lush gardens. Note section includes scientific information about the plants and animals. An attractive art book that uses humor and poetry to teach lessons for living. Adults and children will enjoy this book!

This book is a wonderful combination of storytelling, illustration, and biology! Kids meet all sorts of creatures from the Hawaiian seascape-eels, shrimp, limpets, squid, seabirds, and more--and learn valuable life lessons told in a clear, humorous text.

Many of the fables teach respect for kids' peers and the environment-while celebrating both. This is a book to read-and re-read with enjoyment.

Fables span time and space; they date back many centuries and can be found in all cultures. Handed down from generation to generation, the purpose of a fable is to teach a particular lesson, value, or to give sage advice. They also provide us with the opportunity to laugh at our foolishness and cry and comfort each other when faced with tragedy. They connect us not only with the world of nature and other cultures but ultimately they define what makes us human. In Fables from the Sea, the author has studied what the sea has to offer and discovered ten lessons, reminding us of the importance of kindness, honesty and perserverance. Her illustrator, a childhood friend, has taken those lessons and illustrated them in the most splendid and vibrant watercolors. A must for readers of all ages! Even adults can be reminded about what happens to complaining cowries! Like Fables from the Garden, Fables from the Sea is a beautiful and lasting gift, just one of the sea's many treasures. I was first introduced to this author with "The Healing Place" a friend had recommended since I didn't like to read and needed a healing time and a place to do it. I found myself so deep into that book, tears welling many times as I too began to heal.
When the Fairhaven Chronicles came out, I didn't want to start reading until I had all of them. Without knowing exactly how many there were going to be, I had purchased 4 volumes one at a time after each release. I had had them for a few years but could not wait any longer as they sat on my book shelf as I would add a new volume to my collection and through 2 moves. I started on volume 1 and read for 2 days as much as time would permit me until I finished them all through volume 4. I just can't wait for the next volume to come out. I almost want to read them over again before I start on volume 5.
Its a must have for the "don't really like to read" person, and the one that may be going through some personal trials and often wonder if others do too.
Wonderful christian writing, simply read with great understanding, empathy and love for all the characters. For the young adults to older adults, truly a great selection of reading.

This is billed as the "Mormon Mitford" series, and I'd say that's a pretty fair comparison. If you are familiar with the Jan Karon series set in North Carolina, you'd feel right at home in this series set in rural Alabama. There's the same small town feel with an emphasis on faith and family life. I got totally caught up in the characters and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Maybe it's not 'great literature', but it was a lot easier and more enjoyable to read.

The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and President of the Lutheran World Federation, here outlines his vision for "a Public Church" focused on love, prayer, social justice, and an active witnessing to the Christian faith in deed as much as in word. Bishop Hanson is truly a compassionate, progressive, orthodox man of faith, and precisely the sort of leader that our nation, our denomination, and the Christian Church need in these trying times.

This is one of the most gospel-centered books I have ever read. Bishop Hanson explores "witnessing" but doesn't make me feel guilty because I "don't witness." This book is very pastoral and should be read by every person who has ever had doubts about God's whereabouts. And then re-read it. Keep it handy, and highlight as you read. The chapters on Worshiping, Equipping, Changing, and more, are equally as pastoral as Witnessing. Because it is designed to be used for discussion, it is Bishop Hanson's hope that ". . .every congregation . . . will gather around these themes for conversation and prayer, to seek togther to clarify a vision of what this church might be in mission." Your yoke will be lighter.

This is a must have for die hard gamers who love vampires. It is both extremely useful, and very interesting to read. It gives many ways to spruce up those boring vampire encounters that you may have had. All in all, a great purchase at a fairly low price.

A great supplement for a great game system.

Green Ronin has a winner with this one. It does everything it promises and then some. Whether you want a playable vampire racial template, new feats to customize vampires or simply want advice on how to incorporate or portray a vampire in your campaign this book is for you. Fang and Fury provides both players and DMs with all the tools they need to spice up the vampires in their games. From Daywalkers(think Blade) to Vampire Dragons, from Vampire Mages to cannibalistic Revelers this book has it all.

The only real problem I have with this book is the lack of an index, though the reason for the lack of an index is a good one. They have so much information in this book you'll find the insides of the covers packed with it. All in all one of the better books out there for the D20 system.
