Engaging and well-written historical fiction...

I just completed this novel last night and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is well written and does a more than adequate job of holding the reader's attention despite the fact that it is a lengthy novel. I was touched by the love story Ms. Seton creates for Katherine and John of Gaunt and was impressed that the novel still felt fresh to me, even though it was written in the 1950s.

The one complaint I have is in regard to the ending. I don't want to deny anyone the pleasure of discovering the entire novel for themselves, so I won't give anything away. However, I think I can at least say that I was disappointed in the final scenes that took place between Katherine and John. I was eagerly awaiting the denouement but was left feeling like it fell a little flat.

Regardless, if you are a fan of historical fiction, you will enjoy this book!

I've read so much medieval romantic literature...Katherine is one of the best. Kristin Lavransdatter is the finest, yet, Katherine does have as much historic content and fact as any text book.
Though I think the "bodice busting" parts are not really so necessary they do add a bit of spice. Ms. Seton really did her homework and I look forward to reading the rest of her stories.

I'm 48, and about 20 years ago, I first read "I AM GOD" in a book by Shirley MacLaine. It was revolutionary then - and NO ONE talked about it. Now, when Bishop Jordan writes it -I KNOW IT. I AM GOD. YOU ARE GOD. WE ARE GOD. Imagine if the whole world finally came to that realization. Whether your God is black, white, Hindu, Catholic, whatever. That God put you here for a reason - and Bishop Jordan helps you remember that. I HIGHLY recommend this book. Thank you Bishop Jordan. Blessings everyone.

Bishop E. Bernard Jordan's book brings three words immediately to mind: BRILLIANT, POWERFUL, AND INSPIRING. This wonderful book is all three of those things and I should actually add, eye opening and insightful, to that list of adjectives. This book is a MUST READ for anyone wanting to manifest prosperity into his or her life. I can't urge you enough to read this book AND to seek out other books/videos by Bishop E. Bernard Jordan. His teachings are influencing huge corporations and world leaders and after you read this book I'm sure you will understand why. Stop wasting time reading the reviews and get the book. Your return on investment from absorbing the principles in this book will pay for itself many, many times over! In "The Laws of Thinking" Bishop Jordan teaches 20 secrets to manifest prosperity in your life. If you're a Christian the book will renew your spirit and bring you closer to God as well. If you're not a Christian then this book will give you some valuable deeper insights and may open your eyes to some important things that you hadn't considered or experienced before. Really, it doesn't cost much and what you will surely gain from absorbing the principles taught in "The Laws of Thinking" make it an easy choice - GET THE BOOK AND READ IT TWICE!

Goose Girl
By Shannon Hale

I loved the Goose Girl, for the well planned out characters, vivid imagery, smooth flow, and the continued suspense. This book had me hooked from the very beginning.

Ani was born a princess and was taught by her aunt to speak to swans. Her mother, the queen, found her to be a strange girl, who was awkward and uncomfortable with people. Her mother kept Ani inside the castle, so she could not talk to the birds and swans. Ani was not even allowed to associate with her own brother and sisters. She found solace in riding her horse, Falada, with whom she could communicate. She also enjoyed her best friend and lady in waiting, Selia. Selia had the gift of `people speaking', where Ani was best understood by the creatures.

The Queen Mother prepared Ani's brother for the throne. When confronted, she told Ani that she had prearranged her marriage to the prince of a far away kingdom.

Ani's lady in waiting schemed to take away the throne, marry the prince and kill Ani, along with all of her gurards. Ani, who had never before left the castle grounds, escaped with her life. She was exiled to live as a goose girl, taking care of the kings geese, while her lady in waiting lived as royalty.

Ani needed to disguise herself, and find allies to help regain her royal heritage and over throw the imposter, Selia.

There are bloody scenes, so the story would not be appropriate for younger children. This book will be delightful for the 6th to 9th grade level.

I highly recommend the Goose Girl and look forward to reading other books by Shannon Hale.

I thought this book was a bit simplistic in style, but it was still an enjoyable read. I wish it had been a bit more atmospheric. Between the updated, modern attitudes of the characters and the sparse descriptions, the book seemed much more modern that its intended setting. I liked it, but I felt like with a bit more effort, it could have been fantastic instead of just good.

Excellent read for all!

Shannon Hale has committed a horrible sin; her re-telling of the Grimm "goose girl" is better than the original! The other two books in this series, Enna Burning and River Secrets, are also wonderful reads and bring back to life some of the lovable characters from goose girl.

I read this book after my mother past it on to me. I have since gone back and read Indigo as well. This story burned into my soul. I have read and re-read for the last week and a half. Everytime I get a few minutes I go back and re-read a part the evoked stong emotion. I cried and I laughed. The characters were so real that I felt like I was there. This needs to be made into a movie. I would love to see Raimond, Sable, Galen, Hester, and the Brat come to life on the big screen! Beverly give somebody movie-rights!!!!

I thought this book was a well written and wonderful book. I had to re-read this book with my book club. We all enjoyed the book, we all cried at different parts. Sable was strong and relied on her strength, Raimond was a bit spoiled, like most men. However, he was able to get over himself and love Sable. The part of being re-captured back into slavery was quite sad, but love prevailed and I am truly happy that Raimond found her. Great book, filled with so much history. Love th bibiliography as always.

After reading Indigo and learning about Raimond and his brothers, I was hoping to read more about them. I enjoyed reading about the budding romance and attraction between Sable and Raimond. I tell you Ms. Jenkins' really knows how to make a story come to life. She makes you feel like you're right there in the heat of all the action and the drama. She entertains as well as educates. I can't say I've ever enjoyed a history lesson so much as when I'm reading one of her historical fictions. Also while reading this particular story my heart ached for the characters. And the trials they had to go through in order to maintain their freedom. Once again, the worst thing about a Beverly Jenkins' book is that you never want them to end. Keep 'em coming, Ms. Jenkins!

For medical reasons, my husband and I had to stop eating meat and we were completely lost as to what we could eat besides veggies. I stumbled across this cookbook and purchased it for a friend who's an established vegetarian. After I gave it to her, I found myself reading through it. I love it so much, I decided to purchase a copy for myself. The recipes are easy to make (and I'm a horrible cook), the selections are quite broad (especially when you're clueless as to what to fix) and the manner in which the book is organized makes it easy to follow (all the pizzas are together). I highly recommend this book regardless of your status as a vegetarian: novice or experienced.

This cookbook is amazing. Some of the recipes are so simple you think, "Wait a minute. . . this is a RECIPE? Broil asparagus and drizzle vinagrette over it?" But try it . . . and asparagus never tasted so tartly and meltingly delicious. In every single recipe, the flavor of the vegetable itself is intensified and highlighted. The tomato tart is worth buying the book for all by itself! The very simplicity means the recipes are relatively easy and fast projects, and I've yet to find one that didn't bring rave reviews from company. They're so reliable that I often try one I've never tried before for guests -- we all get to be amazed together! Totally terrific, whether you're a prinicpled vegetarian or (like me) just like vegs as part of an omnivore diet!

No one in our family is a vegetarian, but the recipes are so good that we prefer some of them as written, without meat (pancetta, sausage, prosciutto, etc) with which we usually add to "improve" vegetarian recpies. Risotto recipes are particularly outstanding! The picky, more carnivorous members who avoid anything green actually LOVE the risotto with spinach and herbs as well as the soups. They now eat their vegetables!

I recently moved to Italy and decided to get this book to bring with me so as not to get stuck in a vegetarian food rut and also to be able to eat good Italian food without always having to go out to a restaurant. I have made something different almost everynight for a month so far. Not one recipe has disappointed me. They are all very easy to follow and super tasty. My boyfriend is loveing my new found love of cooking, and especially la cucina italiana! I'd also like to add that I used to be vegan so I always look at recipes from an "Is it possible to make this vegan?" standpoint. MANY MANY of these are already vegan on their own and even more of them are if you have the right soy products and a little imagination so I reccomend this book to vegans as well.

This is an excellent scholarly biography of Augustine of Hippo. Peter Brown gives a thorough and balanced treatment of all of the important aspects of Augustine's life, thought, and historical context. I personally used this book as my set textbook for an independent study course I took on St. Augustine when I was attending university.

Brown does a very good job of summarizing important philosophical and theological concepts that are central to understanding Augustine's significance to the history of Christianity.

However, despite my very positive appraisal of this book, I feel that this might not be the best choice for people making their first entry into Augustine.

A brilliant thinker made accessible

Augustine's is a severe and forbidding character. His intellectually rigorous reasoning on(and harsh views of) salvation and grace made him an inspiration to Calvin and the Puritans. But gloomy though his view of human nature might be, Augustine was intense and passionate, a theologian and philosopher with a poet's sensitivity to natural beauty and the use of language. This books puts the reader in Augustine's mind and life: there is the young man dedicated to an idealistic pursuit of truth, surrounded by admiring friends and family; later, his imposition of that truth on the all-too-human structure of the early Christian church will be fraught with challenge. Augustine knew Rome and Roman Africa in their glory days; he died as Africa fell to Vandal invaders who would impose a century of brutal rule. Peter Brown brings the tumultuous period in which Augustine lived fully and comprehensively alive; he makes us one with a brilliant, uncompromising, surprisingly compassionate human being.

As the first 19 reviews here have thoroughly described, this is the definitive bio of Augustine. (What Bainton once was for Luther). The 2nd edition is a whole new work.

I met Peter Brown in Princeton, where he taught, a few times, and he just oozed brilliance. I have nothing new to add except an anecdote that tells it all. The story goes that Brown was so focused and mature that he came to the idea of writing this definitive critical bio of Augustine while in his early teens. He focused all of his energy on it, methodically begining to maste the secondary academic literature on Augustine before even beginning his university studies. He wrote this bio shortly after completlng his undergraduate honors thesis, publishing it to rave reviews in his early 20s.

This story has made him a legend. And once, Dr. Paul Rorem of Princeton Seminary told us, he asked Brown about it. Brown laughed and told an even more amazing one. Turns out the truth is that Brown had not developed any special interest in Augustine until the end of his undergraduate studies. Being pressed for a thesis topic, with a deadline approaching, he picked Augustine almost at random. He then set about to master Augustine, and in just 2 years ended up writing the definitive bio that changed the field forever!

The mag. opus of one of the world's great scholars.

Epic study of Western Christianity's towering genius

Review Date: 2007-07-28
Peter Brown's AUGUSTINE of HIPPO is epic study of the adventure...the spiritual-intellectual ODYSSEY...that is Life of Aurelius Augustine,Saint and uber-Father of the Christian Church in the West. Brown's peerless biography details(36chapters;437pp)a life of towering intellectual genius from birth in AD 354 in Thagaste,Province of Northern Africa SPQR ;until his death as Bishop of Hippo in AD 430.His education is sweepingly arrayed ~beginning in Carthage as orator and magister;his thorough indoctrination in Manichaeism; his meeting with St.Ambrose and immersion in philosophy of Platonist...the birth & death of his brilliant son,Adeodatus,"gift of God"..;the everlasting presence/influence of his mother,Monica; the epiphany cited in THE CONFESSIONS,"to take and read(Biblical exhortations of St. Paul)"followed by his Conversion/Baptism and quick-fire Ordination as Roman Catholic priest;and almost-instant elevation to Bishop. This prelude is followed by Augustine's unsurpassed career as The West's first & premier existential-psychologist:THOU HAS MADE US FOR THYSELF LORD; AND OUR HEARTS ARE FOREVER RESTLESS UNTIL THEY REST IN THEE; and ironic humorist~LORD MAKE ME PURE...BUT NOT TODAY. As well as arch-foe of anti-Catholic heresy~Donatism; Pelagianism;and the Occult(with which he was expertly familiar having been 10 year Initiate therein).

Augustine's CITY of GOD is not only the first consummate philosophy of History (surpassing Herodotus "then";and Hegel/Spengler & even Marx "now" in effect on history. CITY of GOD shaped the LOGOS,world-view of Western Man for 1000 years/entire MIDDLE AGES(ca~AD 476-AD 1517).Austine wrote catechisms ENCHIRIDION);treatises on Free Will;predestination;and is formulator of the Christian concept of ORIGINAL SIN.Augustinian theology l comprises(ironically)most fundamental notions of Protestant Reformers. Catholic Church champion St.Thomas Aquinas is -as-indebted to him as to Aristotle in framing THE SUMMA THEOLOGICA.

Peter Brown's new St.AUGUSTINE of HIPPO is not so much revision but carefully written...in modus of Augustine..reflection on what he had once written. There is brief preface. There is extensively documented epilogue comprised as New Evidence;& New Directions(pp441-520).There is expanded bibliography & index. The 1967 edition is 463pp;the new is 538pp.
Any student of Augustine knows that with him "more is More. Whether 75pp mas is MORE, the reader will of course determine.Brown's book is the classic, unlikely to be surpassed, study of a genius in the service of God,SERVUS DEI. Any serious student of theology, philosophy;or history of Ideas must confront St.Augustine of Hippo. This profound, mythology-like masterwork is not the opus to start with. But when you're ready "to TAKE & READ",it is matchless story-telling that is worthy of the unique, perhaps most remarkable,QUEST for God & Truth that a great and gifted man ever committed his life toward. This is the best book I have found for a general study of the of neural networks. I found this particularly useful when looking at how to write my own NN frameworks. The depth of the mathematics allowed me to easily answer questions like: 'what if I replaced function abc with xyz'. I have found other texts failed to show key mathematical derivations, or to explore the subtleties of what the maths imply.

The book covers a plethora of topics from simple gradient descent through second order techniques and conjugate gradient, through to the use of 'bayesian techniques' (basically confidence intervals on network outputs), monte carlo techniques etc. Similarly error functions, non-linearities (sigmoids, softmax etc.) and data preparation are all treated.

The extensive bibliography also provides excellent references for further study, (a whos who of the field, as well as actual titles). My copy is now dog earred from frequent reading.

It makes a difficult topic easy to understand

Mr Bishop's book is very well written and contains a lot of useful information on neural networks. It is outlined well and progresses in a logical form. If, however, you are looking for a book that gives discussions with concrete examples of neural networks applications or set ups, you will be sorely disappointed. The mathematical treatment is universally generalized with very few specific concrete examples shown. Even the exercises will not serve you well. The term 'graded' is used; however, that simply referes to the description of difficulty. There are no answers to these exercises, so unless you have a teacher or are already firmly familiar with the material, you will not know if you have completed them correctly or not. Even worse, the exercises are in general not written to reinforce concepts in the chapter, but in most cases extend the chapter material into new regions.

In summary, this book should only be purchased by someone already familiar with neural networks and their mathematical basis. Anyone else will be wasting their money.

Sheer pleasure.

What a fantastic introduction to autism this book provides. The coloring book format makes it a wonderful tool for kids to learn about autism while having fun. I like how the author created this as a tool to utilize with typical peers in the classroom or to send home with typical classmates to enable families to discuss at home. Providing autism awareness opportunities makes it so much easier for kids to interact and better understand each other. If we provide the information and the tools, the mysteries of autism can go away and open up opportunities for unique friendships. I highly recommend this book for young children...especially those who have children with autism on their campus. GREAT JOB! I gave this book to my sons first grade teacher. He is the only child with autism in his class. She read the book to the class and it really helped them understand what my son deals with throughout his day. They are so helpful. After hearing the story and watching the behavior therapists with my son, they have all become little future ABA therapists - very cute. Children at this age seem to want to understand autism and learn how they can help. This book explains what it feels like to have autism in a very child-friendly format.

I am one of those people who, actually, taught that I was a thinking until I read the book "The Laws of Thinking 20 secrets to using the Divine power of your mind to manifest prosperity" This book made me realize that nothing exists unless the mind creates it, and everything that is taking place in my life....I created it at one point, or another. My thinking process has changed, and I am now creating my own reality from a conscious state of mind. I am now self-employed because I have learned how to used these principles, and I am applying them to my life. Thank you Master Prophet E. Bernard Jordan for writing such a stellar work of art!!!!!!

The Laws Of Thinking / The Book

The laws of thinking as I finished this book the fourth time I then begin to dissect it one chapter at a time four additional times. I then acquired the tongues of fire and the contents of the book began to resonate a sound of new beginnings. Then after all of this I found myself in a place where if anything at all started to give me discomfort the chapters in this book bring to mind the instant solution. As a case in point lets take money for instance everybody likes to talk about money and in most case's it's the lack of money. The reason why that is- is because we hold money in the wrong perspective. If you lack money you lack the power to think a premise at ZOE is that if you can think it up you can think it down. As we read in the laws of thinking we began to find out that we put money in the place of God. Often times we allow money to dictate our decisions rather than taking God at his word. The bible says my God shall supply all of my needs according to his riches in glory Philippians 4:19. We also began to realize that the bills that we have in our pockets is not money-, money real money is the currency of the mind. For years we were driven into a position that made us believe that if we had money we couldn't be close to God, and for a long time I bought into that as if being broke made me more holy. 1st John 3:10 tells us that God wants us to be prosperous - beloved I desire that you prosper and be in health even as your soul has prospered. When we read our bibles we find out that it was Jesus himself who put money on the same level as God Mathew 6:24 you can not serve two master. Until I read the laws of thinking I could have never looked at money like this and now I will never look at money the same way again. Bishop Jordan writes on page 202 of the book you must conquer your love of money to conquer the evil in your life. I like how Mother Jordan says it if your saying money is evil, money is not gonna come to you because your saying it's evil. For we all know that it is the love of money that makes it evil, even as we think a little deeper, even though the bile says that the love of money is the root of all evil. Father God in me can I express this,?-( Speak Son) it's not the love money, it's the lust of the individual. It's not the money it's what we do with the money. I f you are in a place where you have run out of reasoning away the fact that what they teach you at your local church has a question mark the laws of thinking will dispel many many of the myths. The laws of thinking will give you the clarity of purpose and keenness of direction, just like the resolution on your plasma screen the higher the pixels the greater the quality of the picture. For instance the bible says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made that's in the book of Psalms 139:14 well in the book of the laws we find out just how we are made when we begin to learn about the seven chakras, and the seven other bodies that where born with us we realize just how fearfully and wonderfully we are made. And on the sixth day God said lets us make man then on the seventh day he rested from all that he had made and we begin to know that the number seven is the number of completion, or perfection peering in the book of Genesis. Well as we dig deeper we see that this book is the perfect explanation to and for all the misconceptions of the past if it does not stir your spirit it will anger your intellect. I and my father are one this in the past was reason enough to be crucified John 10:30-33 for your works we stone you not, but because you being a man make your self equal with God. The law of oneness will put to rest all these myths because the book says that without oneness there can be no atonement when you look at this you see at-one-ness. I firmly believe that the laws of thinking affectionately referred to as the book is an explanation, clarification, exhortation, and revelation that will change a region a nation, a world. This book uncovers the lies that enslaved a people, that stole a civilization, that raped many generations, and killed a culture as there are many remnants ah, but it's just not the same. This book ,the book does what the children of Israel where afraid of when they herd the thundering of God at Mt. Sinai Exodus 20:18-19 it shows us God in the raw in other words it uncovers the nakedness of God. This, the book is not an aid this, the book is not a supplement it is what Eve was to Adam it is a rib a companion, a help meet. I know there are many Theologians who will take that statement and run with it , yeah and look what happened in the garden well just as it was then as it is now God is in control. This laws of thinking, the book will prosper you it is a law; This the book will let you be you and let me be me it is a law, this book the book will lift your spirit it is a law. The laws of thinking, the book will give you the desires of your heart attraction it is a law. This laws of thinking, the book will show you how to bring things from the spiritual world into the natural world it is a law; write the vision and make it plain upon tables that he may run that reads it Habakkuk 2:2. Often times God will ask us to do something that in the natural just does not make sense sometimes in this life we are going to have to take some risk the book The Laws Of Thinking will make sense of the risk you take in the name of the spirit. This Laws Of thinking the book will produce in you right divine habits, oh yeah it is a law. When we work from the sweat of our brows we remain under the curse ah, but the book teaches us to work from our passion, it is written that when you work from your passion you will never work a day in your life. Often times we say things with our mouth do we not remember that the power of life and death are in the power of the tongue Proverbs 18:21. If you say it you better pay it ah the book tells the truth about the vow it is a law. The Laws Of Thinking book is so powerful it will either draw you our it will drive. When you take heed to the truths that are contain their in it will draw you into a level of consciousness that will cause you to walk through life seemingly un-scathed. There are many believers who still think that the kingdom of God is treating everybody right, going to church and then you can enter into the kingdom. Ah, but the book The Laws Of Thinking teaches us that you have got to get into the right system oh yes it is --- a law. The truths laws ,and principles that the Master Prophet teaches are going to take back an identity of a people I believe that right divine order will rivet through every person who sincerely embraces this book. I believe that imprisonment will be an experience that if it even continues to exist, will cause rehabilitation to become a certainty. The only way to really rehabilitate a person is to change his/her mind, and a change of mind is what repentance. As we begin to let go of the worn out traditions of the past then we can walk in the consciousness of the eternal now. I am reminded of a passage of scripture that says 2nd Chronicles 7:14 if my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. This book The Laws Of Thinking if you try to reject it, if you try to dispute it, if you disrespect it - it will drive you out of your mind.

The Mac and Cheese is amazing! Try substituting croutons for the bread crumbs for a different flavor. I've given this book to anyone who a). loves to cook, b). loves 'Friends', or c). is moving into their own place or as a graduation present.
