A Great Little Guide to a Beautiful State
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-26
North Carolina (of which I am a native, so please forgive the bias) likes to advertise itself as the "Variety Vacationland" and after reading the "State Parks of North Carolina" it's not hard to see why. Eastern North Carolina features hundreds of miles of beaches, lighthouses, coastal villages, swamps, Civil War forts, and the two largest landlocked sounds in the United States. The central section of the state (the Piedmont) features rolling, forested hills ocassionally broken by isolated, jagged peaks (usually called "knobs" locally) with excellent rock climbing and superb views, and swift rivers and large, manmade lakes. And in western North Carolina there are the Appalachian mountains, featuring the highest peaks east of the Mississippi river. This outstanding book, written by two biology professors from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, covers all 41 of North Carolina's state parks. These two men traveled to each of the state parks and thoroughly explored them (they traveled over 9,000 miles in researching this book). Although naturally concerned with the plant and animal life in the parks, the book is still designed with the camper, hiker, or even casual visitor in mind. The authors divide the parks into three geographic sections - coastal plain, Piedmont, and mountains, and they also include seperate sections on the state's nature preserves and recreation areas (all located on the shores of its' largest manmade lakes). The chapters on each park feature a map with roads, hiking trails, campgrounds, etc., contact information for the park, the park's main attractions, a section on the history of the park, a section on the plant and animal life to be found in the park, a section on hiking and (if relevant) climbing trails, a section on campgrounds or other facilities (and park activities, if any), and a section on nearby historic and/or natural attractions. There aren't many photographs, but I suppose that's to encourage the reader to see the parks for themselves. If you're interested in visiting North Carolina, or you're a native Tar Heel who's looking to explore your state, then this book is a great place to start! I've used it on a number of trips, and it has proven its' value time and again.

A great read. As good as "Reminiscences."

Review Date: 1998-11-21
A neat collection of short stories that appeared in McClure's Magazine around 1900. Some characters reappear in different stories, but the stories are each self-contained. This is the earliest work in which I have found the short-selling quote: "He who sells what isn't his'n, Must buy it back or go to pris'n (page 173)." If you want to feel the brass Ticky-ticky-ticky-tick of the ticker then read this book. The first story "The Lady and Her Bonds" appears to have been the inspiration for Lefevre's novel "Sampson Rosk of Wall Street." If you liked "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator," you will love this book. Don't be dissuaded by the "out of print" label probably attached to this work - it cn still be found and is worth the search.

This pocketsize beginner's spiral-bound field guide is both useful, utilitarian, and beautiful. The cardstock paper is coated to protect against the omni-present NW drizzle, so you can take it with you when doing plant searches. Her 3 1/2" by 5" photos are some of the best I have seen. They are clear and plainly show important identifying details of the plants. She also lists the Tlingit names for some of the plants, and has a personable, straighforward writing style. She has both Volume 1 and 2. Both are excellent. ...

Better than Postcards

What a lovely souvenir of Williamsburg. It's far better than a pack of postcards. It is, perhaps, a tad short on bread and butter history but pictures portray more than words, anyway, and these are exceptional both in terms of the photography and those the editor chose to include. If you can somehow obtain a copy of this paperback, it is a lovely way to share American history with a youngster.

You will not be able to put this one down! Cheryl Biggs surpasses herself, with this her first published book. This story of time travel will not leave you wanting, it is the best book I've ever read! The characters, Justin and Janelle are very realistic and you'll hate to see the book end. It's a great hit for Cheryl Biggs. It's definately worth the time and cost.

This bedtime story is a treasure. The brilliant illustrations bring warmth and imagination to this wonderful book. The pages are filled with fanciful watercolor illustrations of the sandman, elves, angels, teddy bears and more. You and your child will feel cozy and peaceful after reading this book. This is the kind of book to read over and over as part of your child's bedtime routine. Buy one for your home collection and several as gifts. You will be delighted.

In general, I liked the story. It was as if the author was telling the story of my life minus the projects. However, I did not like the fact that Tammy settled for a man that she wasn't in love with and that was too old for her. Other than that, I recommend this book.

`What do you see?'

When you look at Tamlyn Blake, do you see yourself? She is your typical teenager determined to live her life her way. Well the part she missed is that there are rules you have to follow in life.

When You Look At Me takes you on a journey back in time during the defiance and determination of Tamlyn who believes like most that she's right, you're wrong. She meets Hassan, and deems it as love at first sight. Like all teenagers she has all the answers. That is until the truth comes crashing down.

This story is so rousing. It shows why parents are the way they are. I greatly urge others to read this great story written by Undra E. Biggs.

Scanning through everyone's review, they've basically given you the play-by-play of the book, their rendition of the book in a nutshell. Makes no sense with me going through all that. All i can pretty much say is this book is an intelligently, well-written novel. It captures the reader in everyway possible. I found it hard to put this book down. I even caught myself catching feelings off the book... at times i had to remind myself, though i didnt want to, that it was all imaginative writing....all a work of fiction. Honestly, this is one of the best books i have ever read. It even had an un expected surprise ending, none of that cliche' nonsense.
Bottom Line: GO GET THE BOOK!!! WORTH EVERY PENNY, EVERY SECOND OF YOUR TIME!!

Excellent

When I first picked this book out in the library in 2003, I did not think I would like it. It seemed to me to be a typical book with "baby momma drama". I am very happy to say that I was wrong. This book was excellent and I could not put it down. It's been two years later. I have reread the book and I still enjoyed it just like the first time. Undra Biggs is a wonderful writer. She does a great job of exploring each character giving you the little details that you need to help you understand and fall in love with each of them. You go through every emotion with them and in most cases can relate to their pain. I did not want this book to end. Hats off to you Undra. This is a winner!!!!

My 9 year old son loves this book! I had to choose between 4 different books to get him for a summer reading extra-credit activity for school, and after reading the other reviews, picked this one. Thanks goodness I did - this is the first time I've actually seen him sit down and be interested in a fictional story book! In the past, the only books that even half-way interested him were non-fictional books about space, animals, rocks, dinosaurs, etc., and he would only skim through those and read the parts he wanted. I read this book myself so I would be able to know what he is talking about when he starts work on his book report, and found it to be funny and entertaining. My son laughed out loud at several points, and had to bring the book to me to read those parts to me. I am sure I will be purchasing the next books in the series in the near future!

These books are a great, easy read! My 8 year old son couldn't get enough and it's a good thing, too, as they are listed on his schools' AR list. He read through them quickly, and although we checked them out at the library, he has asked if we can purchase them so he can have them to read anytime! I highly recommend this series. I do think it helps kids with coping skills and how to manage those quirky situations at school, should they arise. Nolan Byrd, you rock!

Children's Librarian who LOVES this book

Review Date: 2007-04-19
This book is fantastic for boys, reluctant readers and everyone in between. I am a children's librarian and I have done several programs highlighting this book. It's written in a very accessible and conversational style that draws you right in. Nolan is a 5th grade nerd who comes up with a secret identity and an ingenius plan to foil the school bully. This book will have you wondering how you can be an everyday superhero.
