The beauty of this book is that its content and style is just as appealing to a 12 year old as it is a grandparent. As an adult I was spellbound by the sheer number of facts and details the author puts forth about early New Amsterdam life and politics, spoken through era-appropriate dialogue and characters who really lived their stories! As an educational administrator not only do I recommend Manhattan: Seeds of the Big Apple for school libraries, but as an excellent addition to any social studies curriculum. A truly unique book which should become a classic resource about the life and times of New York's early Dutch settlers.

If you enjoy early colonial history and are looking for a wholesome read, this book is for you. A novel with a real flavor of what it must have been like living back in 17th century Manhattan. I'm looking forward to other books by this author.

This saga includes some intriguing geographic references to familiar locales in and around present day New York. The author imagines the challenges that a pioneering family might well have faced in early Colonial times. In depth character development and clever, but natural, use of Colonial colloquialism bring this tale to life. All in all, a novel that really uplifts the spirit.

Max Goes to the Moon was very informative and fun for my children. My 4 year old liked the pictures and the story. My 6 year old wanted to learn more about how to get to the moon, so the sidebars worked perfectly. Get this book for any kid who dreams of going to the moon.

This is a great book. My almost 5 year old son keeps asking for it over and over again. Unlike most "real science" books, it has both scientific explanations for things like gravity and the phases of the moon, but also tells a narrative fictional story. As a parent, it's very helpful to have all the answers right there on the same page when your child asks, what is gravity? We can't wait for the next Max book.

I'll keep this short and to the point. As the title says, this is the best "tool" I have in my tool chest. The information in this book has helped me more times then I can recollect. The book is written from a practical perspective and isn't full of theoretical "how to". It even includes descriptions of how to make some of the special tools you'll need from items you probably have laying around your shop. I can't wait for Vol. 2!

I am looking into buying a Pan, and searching for more than anecdotal information. This book is the best source of Pan info I have read so far. It helped me realize that a Pan wasn't the best choice, and that I would need to spend a lot of time wrenching, instead of riding.

I wish they'd write one for Shovelheads!!

This book is lacking in some important areas. No carburetors, no transmissions, no brakes. Need to know how to adjust your mousetrap, change springs on a springer, or fix a leak on your hydraulic front end? You won't find it in this book. The topics it does cover are great, easy to understand, and well detailed. The bottom line is I do use this book and it has become a permanent part of my shop library.

Up in Manhattan's Morningside Heights and its Dominican analogs all over the US, salsa is edged out by the magnificently manic beat of the merengue, whether stirred into Dominican rap and house (the most original as well as the least known versions of the genre) or in the tear-em-down accordion of Fefita La Grande. Austerlitz has all this and a lot more, all the way from the luckless Toma' back in the 1840s (read the book!)Austerlitz covers merengue from rural to hi-society in all its fierce joviality. Read this book and you'll know there's one good thing Trujillo did for the Dominican Republic!

If you are looking for a quick yet thorough coverage of this topic then this is the book for you. It is a relatively short book, coming in at 167 pages (not including bibliography but including notes section), yet it covers the whole spectrum of the national music of the Dominican Republic.

Mr Austerlitz covers the beginnings of this music all the way through to its current state. It also spends time on Merengue's development during the Trujillo era (a particularly interesting topic to anyone who studies the Dominican Republic).

Mr Austerlitz also does a good job of addressing the sociological issues that arise from music and manages to blend well the merengue of the campo with that of the salon.

A good read and it even comes with a CD with some very good campo (country) merengue. If you are looking for merengue at its roots then this CD should please you.

TABLE OF CONTENTS:

1.Introduction

PART 1: THE HISTORY OF MERENGUE 1854-1961. 2. Nineteenth-Century Caribbean Merengue. 3. Merengue Cibaeno, Cultural Nationalism, and Resistance. 4. Music and the State: Merengue during the Era of Trujillo, 1930-1961.

I thought this was an excellant book. All 3 stories were well written. The connection to the community of Whitehorn was minimal, especially compared to other books in the Montana Mavericks series. At the same time these 3 stories stand on their own. They don't need the background of previous books in the series. If I had any complaint about the books was that the stories were too short. I like the characters of Suzanna, Diana, & Isabelle and wanted to read more about them.

A great new series by three of romances most beloved authors

I loved this new Silhouette anthology. Christine Rimmer and Jennifer Greene's stories are both contemps about two sisters, Suzanna and Diana.

Suzanna's wedding day had one small snag . . . no groom. She eases her aching heart with one wild night fling with a cowboy. A few months later it becomes obvious she's carrying his baby and Suzanna finds herself married to a stranger, a stranger she's falling in love with.

Diana's come home to Montana, and falls in love with a little girl, a little girl who just so happens to be the daughter of Diana's first love. When Trey asks her to marry him is it just for his daughter's sake, or could there be another, deeper reason?

Cheryl St. John's contribution, ISABELLE, is a historical that introduces Diana and Suzanna's great-great-grandmother. After her father's death, Isabelle returns to the Big Sky Ranch, determined to build a life for herself. But the ranch is in debt and there's only one option Isabelle can find -- marry Kyle Running Horse Brennan. Can a marriage that begins for practical reasons turn into something more . . . can it turn into a life-long love that will set the standards for generations of Big Sky Brides?

The three stories are a good fit, and a fantastic read! I'm looking foward to reading the rest of the Montana Mavericks series!

Absolutely Terrific!

If you enjoy western romantic short stories, then you'll enjoy this book! The two contemporary tales of Suzanna Brennan and Diana Brennan are delightful and the historical story of their great-great grandparents, Isabelle and Kyle Running Horse Brennan is enchanting!

Be sure not to miss historical anthology, Big Sky Grooms. The stories are about two Kincaid brothers, Caleb and Will and their cousin James. The book, Gunslinger's Bride continues their stories with little brother Brock.

I greatly enjoyed these stories! The tales consist of the contemporary stories of sisters, Suzanna and Diana Brennan and the historical story of the legendary love of their great-great grandparents, Isabelle and Kyle Running Horse Brennan.

Suzanna: Left-at-alter bride, Suzanna spent her wedding night with a sexy stranger. But when she discovered she was pregnant with his child, she didn't refuse the arrogant cowboy's proposal and found herself trying to win his love.

Diana: Diana couldn't turn down the chance of marriage and motherhood to her childhood love who's now a lonely millionaire and a single dad of a young girl determined to make them a family.

Isabelle: Citified Isabelle returns to the beloved ranch of her childhood determined to make it her permanent home. She and the handsomely sexy Native American ranch foreman marry to save the ranch despite the fact he's reluctant to admit his true feelings of desire and love.

Be sure not to miss Big Sky Grooms historical anthology of the sexy Montana Kincaid's and follow up with continuing story of a Kincaid brother in Gunslinger's Bride.

Only the lucky survive

Review Date: 2008-04-23
Arizona Ranger Sam Burrack was a man of hair-trigger courage and a lightning-quick draw. He carried a list of outlaws and tracked his prey relentlessly, alone. His goal was swift justice usually ending in death.
No one under the badlands sun would put the ranger's skills to the test like Montana Red Hollis, a man more brutal than any beast, and more cunning than any desperado Burrack has ever hunted. No one was safe from the wrath of Montana Red. Now, on the frontier where the fastest guns ruled and only the lucky survived, a bloodthirsty killer was about to meet his match.

This is the first book in Ralph Cotton's long running series about the man simply known as the Ranger. Cotton portrays his hero as single minded, a man who won't let anything, or anyone, get in his way of taking his prey down. In fact Burrack often comes across as cold-hearted as those he hunts.

Cotton creates a number of memorable characters, not least Burrack and Montana Red, but the one I liked best was the man running from his past, the gambler Gentleman Joe, who finds himself hiding behind a lawman's badge.

Cotton's descriptions of the landscape, heat and action sequences are first rate, as is his abilitly to build up suspense. The book moves from one set of characters to another effortlessly and the violent confrontations come thick and fast.

Definitely a worthwhile read for fans of the western and a book that has me eager to read more stories about The Ranger.

Cotton does it again

Having read Cotton's Jeston Nash Outlaw series, While Angels Dance, Killers Of Man, and others, I couldn't imagine this new series topping them. On the surface Montana Red is one gutsy shoot-em up western in the tradition of Max Brand and, Louis Lamour. But the best part of the story is the underlying perception of human behavior. What violence does to the lawman and the other people involved is the stuff all great stories are made of. Cotton takes the reader and makes them face what they would do in these kind of situations. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it, and I still find myself goin back to it. Can't wait to see the movie.

Cotton hits another home run!

Ralph Cotton is the next Louis Lamour. Montana Red takes the reader through a roller coaster ride of shootouts and tough western times when bad men were genuinely BAD! The story so captured me that I was afraid to put the book down for fear of something would happen and I'd miss it. It's definitely a page-turner from beginning to end. Can't wait for the next one.

Ralph, you have done it again. This story is about an Arizona Ranger Sam Burack, that is very quick on the draw, and an excellent shot with his trusty .58 cali rifle, and a list in his pocket of outlaws and one of them is a ruthless killer, Montana Red. But while pursuing Montana Red, the Ranger gets into quit a few different scaps, that only his wits and years of experience can get him out of. I give You a 5 star, Ralph, "Very Nice Work putting this series together",and would recommend any one that likes old west stories to read this well put together book. I have read the second book in this series also(BADLANDS), and cant wait until (HARD JUSTICE) comes out in the spring. Once you start reading you cant put them down.

What an excellent book! Timothy Silver has given us a two fold view of Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountains of North Carolina. A combination of the natural history of the area, and man's exploration/exploitation of these lofty peaks. I think what I enjoyed most about the book, were the short "interludes" where the writer inserts his many experiences of car camping, hiking/backpacking, trout fishing, or just marveling at nature while sitting at some well known spot, or some "hidey-hole" known only to people who frequent the area. These personal thoughts heightened my reading pleasure, because like the writer, I have spent a great deal of time in the Blacks and know of what he speaks.

The battle between the Mountain's namesake, the Rev. Elisha Mitchell and his former student, future Confederate general Thomas Clingman about who measured the mountain first, is fleshed out completely, and is probably the definitive account of this famous row.

The end chapters deal with mankind's interventions on the mountain, and the consequences of these acts. This is followed up with concise information about the acid rain/woolly adelgid issues affecting the Fir and Red Spruce trees on the mountain tops, along with some discussion about the growth cycles about the above mentioned trees, which in my opinion, clears up some of the misinformation out there. For years, the problem was blamed on woolly adelgids, then on acid rain. I personally feel like these two scourges work together hand in hand to decimate the once proud Fraser Firs.

This is truly a groundbreaking book. I'd like to see more works that follow this vein. Nicely illustrated.

Timothy Silver has given us an excellent history of Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountains.
The work is titled as an environmental history, and it is supported by a wealth of factual information, but the whole presentation is a wonderful flowing story of these peaks in western North Carolina, and their history as they were shaped by nature and by man.
Of special interest is the account of the feud between Elisha Mitchell and Thomas Clingman. The story encompasses misunderstandings, fragile egos, and desperate politics. When Mitchell fell to his death in 1857, the public mind established Mitchell as a hero and martyr who died to establish these peaks as the state's best known landmark. His body was later moved to the higest peak, which is forever known as Mount Mitchell.
We are also able to see the history of man's interaction with nature. In the case of the Blacks, it is often with tragic results, and even when the intentions are good, the outcome is often marginal.
Dr. Silver leaves us with a compelling book that provides much information and asks many questions that we should consider not only for this mountain range, but for our environment as well.
I highly recommend this book. The author has done us a great favor.

Nature meets Culture

What a terrific book Timothy Silver has crafted! Anyone interested in mountains, hiking, fishing, environmental issues, natural history, or the local history of North Carolina's mountains will enjoy this wonderful account. Professor Silver, a historian in western North Carolina, has written a book in which Mount Mitchell stars at the center of his narrative--and both general readers and professional historians can find meaning and pleasure in his tale.

Like many environmental historians, Silver sees in the reciprocal interaction between nature and culture a larger story of a region. And he brings us this compelling story from a variety of intriguing angles. He offers his own assessments, ones generated on his extensive hiking and fishing trips in the Black Mountains of western North Carolina. He provides insight into the steamy 19th century historical controversy between rivals each seeking to determine which was the highest peak in the region--and to see who could do it first and most authoritatively. (And as a New Englander, I found the tale inviting even if our White Mountains fall short in elevation to North Carolina's peaks!) Professor Silver also examines logging practices and regional boosterism, the antecedent of eco-tourism.

The book has something that will be compelling for a wide audience of readers interested in the natural world and local history--and the style is accessible and enjoyable. Whether you've hiked a lot, love North Carolina, want to investigate stormy political and personal feuds, or wish to know more about regional environmental history, "Mount Mitchell" is a fine read. I commend it to you!

Mrs. Hen yearns for a baby chick to love. To her delight, one day she discovers an egg in her garden and realizes now she can have a chick of her very own. She takes the egg home and sits on it as any good hen would and dreams of her little chick-to-be. Mrs. Hen's friends think she's crazy -- the egg is enormous and polka-dotted and they don't think it will ever hatch. For a long time, it doesn't. After a year or so of sitting on the egg, Mrs. Hen gets frustrated and jostles it, rolls it around, and hits it with a broom in an effort to get it to hatch, but with no luck. She decides to roll it back down the hill, where it cracks at the bottom and out comes her chick -- which turns out to be a dinosaur. She doesn't care that it looks funny for a chick -- she loves it anyway. The illustrations of Mrs. Hen, particularly of her excitement on finding the egg, are charming and full of life.

I'm adopting internationally and was looking for picture books for a young child that would help me begin addressing the issue with a little one. This is a wonderful, charming, heartwarming book -the point being that Mrs. Hen wants a chick to love, and is still thrilled when her "chick" is a little creature that doesn't happen to look like her - she still adores him. The story is short, the illustrations are adorable, and it's not a "heavy", intense book at all - just a feel-good one perfect to read to small children.

Wonderful way to help explain international and cross-cultural adoption to the toddler and pre-schooler. As an adoptive single Mom-to-Be awaiting international adoption, I also like that it portrays a single parent. My only complaint is that in the 21st Century, Mother Hen should have been called Ms. Hen instead of Mrs. Hen. (I'll take the liberty to change the name when I read it to my future daughter)

My Big Lie is a great book for character development. I chose this book when I taught the rules to my 2nd graders. They liked to read it by themselves too.

I was searching for a way to explain to my child why lying was "a big no-no." I hoped that a Little Bill book would be sure to hold my child's interest. This book was able to do both quite well. The story is interesting without being overly complicated. Both my children enjoyed it and the elder did seem to finally grasp what I'd been unsuccessful in explaining before.

My only complaint would be that I wished Cosby had had Little Bill's parents explain the danger in what he had supposedly been doing that caused him to be late for dinner (his lie), before having Bill come clean. But, it did allow for another important safety topic to be discussed.

Altogether, I'd give the book 4.5 stars.

I teach first grade. My students love this book because the children in this book are just like them! I like the book because it is easy for them to read, has great pictures, and is in the form of a short chapter book so they feel they are smart readers. I also like the morals and lessons in the book. This book and other Little Bill books are great!

Every year my students have a choice of choosing a book from the stack of 'Little Bill' books, and this one is always the first one they pick. The moral of this story is one that not only teachers wish to inflict, but parents, as well. It has a great way of introducing THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF story into the classroom. I also enjoyed how it introduced a way to discuss the definition of a "fib". This book was great for my students because we were able to explore in more detail the meaning of true "trust". I recommend this book to every teacher and every parent of elementary aged children.
