I have not the wit nor the folly to attempt to summarise the work contained in the My Big Toe Trilogy; Tom Campbell has already done an outstanding job of encapsulating and organising thirty years of interest, application, annotation and first hand experience of altered states of consciousness (awareness), and yet, there absolutely no doubt, this man is very down-to-earth.

The Trilogy format is a good idea. Each book is a comfortable, progressive read, and the space between books gives time for reflection and digestion. MBT is totally free of religious, political or philosophical bias; it needs no specialist knowledge or training, just interest, an open sceptical mind and the courage to consider a much larger Picture of Reality than we presently enjoy.

I have read the Trilogy 3 times now, and each time, perhaps through familiarity, I am aware of significant new information. MBT WILL affect you at some level or other, be assured. If you are in search of new ground where truth does not wither under the weight of belief, dogma or cultural presumptions, give this work a chance.

I head an open group workshop based on transpersonal discovery (Conscious awareness).
Tom Campbell's Big TOE is not just a constant reference, but it has helped many of us to conceptualise what previously had been areas of indigestible intellectual understanding. I cannot possibly recommend this work highly enough.
The opportunity of a lifetime should be grasped within the lifetime of the opportunity.
I sense this is it.

Who should read these books?

Anyone who desires to advance to adult level in this children's world in which we presently live should go to the trouble of working their way through this trilogy of books, whatever the cost in effort determined by the level at which you choose to learn.
Anyone who already functions as an adult should read this trilogy in order to complete your understanding of the Reality in which you must function and of which you are an integral part.

What can you expect to learn or achieve?

Almost everything that you need to know that is not, of necessity, "do it yourself" only! The author has specifically written the My Big TOE trilogy for reading on several levels with corresponding levels of effort required. Please understand that my comments are intended to encourage you to read, not to discourage you from reading, these books. My intent is to show you why you should read these books at no matter what cost in effort you choose to expend. First, you will find out how much you need to unlearn. Then you will find out how much you do not understand of what is being said and what is going on around you. If however you already possess a high level of such knowledge, you can expect to have a great deal clarified. This trilogy of books constitutes what in the field of physics is called a "theory of everything", thus the acronym TOE. You will see that this is literally true of these books.

To come close to fully understanding My Big TOE requires a high entry threshold, a wide range of knowledge. The author has tried to offset this by reiterating his message from different viewpoints in order to aid your understanding. As he also points out, much of the detail can be skipped as useful to advanced specialists and the main points still be comprehended. He has also tried to relieve the intensity with humorous comments. Not everyone will be able to appreciate the humor however, which the author recognizes, and it is also optional. If you have been to graduate school in the sciences, you will recognize the author as a kindred spirit. He worked as a physicist in industry and collaborated with Robert Monroe of Out of Body fame in his early research.

The main points will provide you with an understanding of the Reality of which you are a part. How it originated, the few characteristics and principles from which it began and by which it developed, including that small part of the greater reality that we experience in our day to day lives. You will be surprised that these principles are things which you probably already know about, just not their full significance in the greater reality. You will also be given a general description of that part of the greater reality which we do not normally experience but which you can if you so desire. This will be developed logically and a reference is given in which a detailed description of our every day "physical" reality, including its physics as understood by present day science and beyond, is developed from the same set of beginning principles as given in My Big TOE. These principles are applicable to the present reality in which you live. Knowing what they are will tell you a lot about what to expect from life, how to deal with it and what is the best way to interact with others for your maximum spiritual advancement during your passage through it.

You will be told the veritable meaning of life and your place in it. It is more explicitly stated than you will find in most other places. It will probably be a great surprise to you and you may not find it to be comforting. Note that I mentioned that we live in a children's world and much that you and everyone else have been taught is intended for comfort, not reality and literal truth. Keep in mind at all times while you read and study My Big TOE that you in your true being are a native and at home in this reality and that you have been dealing with it reasonably successfully through many previous periods of "physical" life when you did not have this information. Now you will have the true story. This information is almost never available while incarnated, other than in very diluted and culturally distorted form. It will be a lot like when you first found out where babies came from. Learning about the pleasure possible, the responsibilities and difficulties involved in the greater process are a matter for you to experience and thus learn for yourself. From these 3 books you will have the information necessary to literally take your first step as a conscious adult while still involved in a "physical" life into the greater reality of which you are a resident part and that is your true home.

Will these books change your life?

Only to the degree to which you are willing and prepared to change. Over time, the degree of change could be very profound if you choose to expend the effort to make it so.

Will you be sorry that you read them?

Only to the extent and in the sense that it is an end of innocence. You will be made aware of laws of being of which ignorance is no excuse. Since you will be judged based on things that you are presently ignorant of with that ignorance not accepted as an excuse, best to lose such innocence. And no problems with apples, snakes and "original sin" this time!

Caution: This Trilogy will expand your mind.

Once in a great while, there comes to us an author that can reach down and pull us up a little higher on the tree of knowledge. And once in a great great while, an author also gives us the knowledge to start from there and climb a little higher ourselves. Mr. Campbell, thank you.

If you are interested in taking a voyage of discovery, I strongly suggest that you have a go at "My big Toe" - a three-book trilogy. "Toe" is short for "Theory of Everything." Start with the first book of the trilogy and work your way through. Mr. Campbell is successfull in explaining how we are all connected and how this universe of ours operates - in ways that even I can understand. His humor and willingness to take a poke at himself from time to time make the voyage a mixture of giggles and head-scratching "where is he taking me?" Like anything worth the time, these books require thinking on your part. But if you hang in there, I promise you that your reading time will be well spent. I have just finished book two, and will start Book Three over the Labor Day holiday. Since the books are a Trilogy, I will post this review for the other two books as well. Good luck - and happy discovery.

A Big Picture of our existence never before presented

With humour and high spirits, Tom Campbell informally shares with you in his Trilogy, who he is, and how he started on the journey that led to his Big TOE. Campbell's Big TOE, which refers to nothing less than a Theory of Everything, stands on firm ground.

In a bigger picture of our existence than has ever been presented, My Big TOE weaves Philosophy, Physics, and Metaphysics together to create a model of reality through which you can begin your journey towards a higher quality of consciousness.

Campbell's books are derived from his own experiences with altered states of consciousness, his work and experiments with respected people in this field, and the objective verification of the results. The author shows how previously, Philosophy, Physics, and Metaphysics clashed in their isolated quests for answers to the nature of reality, and that by setting the camera of our conscious mind to a wide-angle lens, we can better understand reality in the larger sense.

Do not let the scientific undertones steer you away from this Trilogy. The personal asides that the author provides enrich the reading process, and the Trilogy format allows the complex subject matter to be more accessible to everyone.

From those mildly curious to the potentially eternally grateful, please note: from whatever level you personally begin, you cannot go back to exactly the way you previously viewed reality - this Trilogy will reach the core of your being, and you will certainly glean from it something of lasting value.

The true value, however, will lie in your own experiences and explorations, the author cautions, as the Trilogy provides only a framework for your personal quest in search of a higher quality of consciousness and awareness.

While personal effort is expected to achieve results, I appreciate the lengths the author has gone to in order to relate the processes, and the why, of how he arrived at his Big TOE.

I like the why of things, and there is plenty offered here:

* Why you are here and the "point and meaning of both physical and non-physical existence"
* Why our culture and beliefs may inhibit our ability to see the Bigger Picture of reality
* Why improving ourselves is the best way to solve our collective problems, and possibly the best road to Peace
* Why time travel into the future and past is accessible to us
* Why meditation is a good beginning towards all of this; showing you how to create your own mantra based on which of your five senses works best for you
* Why "Spirituality, Consciousness, Love, and Paranormal Phenomena are interconnected"

These are but a few of the answers and profound insights the author presents in this Trilogy.

The noble goals of evolving our consciousness toward the positive side, exploring alternate realities, improving the quality of our being, our life, and our planet, are a challenge the author inspires us to take on.

For all of these reasons and many more besides, I cannot recommend this Trilogy highly enough!

In a word - gorgeous. The author - Joel Sartore - is a contributing photographer for National Geographic Magazine, so you know that the photography is going to be something special and it is. Sartore travels throughout Nebraska, taking pictures of everything - an endangered beatle, rodeos and the cowboys that compete in them, pheasant hunters and fisherman, and Carhenge.
It's is a book that will those of us who live outside the state homesick for Nebraska. It is a reminder of Nebraska's true spirit - it's people. People who live in a state that's dismissed as uninteresting by most, but who make up for any perceived geographical shortcomings by being interesting themselves
Sartore honors his craft, as he captures those traits in the pictures of Nebraskans throughout this book. There isn't a lot of writing, just enough to describe what's happening with each photograph.
"Nebraska: Under a Big Red Sky is a perfect Christmas present for that Husker fan who already has everything colored red. The price is right (less than $15 at Amazon, click the link above).

It's the kind of book you can pass around amongst your family at Christmas time, and I guarantee that they'll spend a few hours pouring over the pages. Well worth the money just to have around, even if you're not going to give it as a present. Leave it on your coffee or end table - someone will pick it up and it will provide hours of quiet entertainment for the holiday season.

Seriously, you don't want to miss this one.

Joel Sartore has captured the subtle essence of why so many Nebraskans that leave the state eventually come home to roost. Unbeknownst to most residents as they grow up, a strong imprinting slowly takes place. As Joel explains, the unique sense of family, community, place, and weather, all contribute to this phenomenon. Joel's photographs are a collection of these innocent but pervasive features of life in Nebraska. If you have ever struggled to describe Nebraska to a person who has never visited the state, this book is for you. It will crystalize your thoughts.

A simple picturebook about the bond between a grandmother and her grandson
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-14
Written and illustrated by Shirley Hillard, One Big Hug is a simple picturebook about the bond between a grandmother and her grandson. "I love you as much as 2 bugs in a rug / I love you as much as 4 doggies standing on a flea / I love you as much as 7 elephants climbing up a tree," the grandmother tells her grandson. "But do you love me as much as one big hug?" "Yes," answers the child. "That's enough," says Granny. The sometimes wild color illustrations involve a wide variety of surprising numerical and animal themes, and the final message about the limitless and unquantifiable nature of love reverberates through the easy-reader language and presentation. Highly recommended.

"How much do you love me" is a question that children and adults alike have fun asking. One Big Hug is an enchanting and brightly illustrated book. As a grandmother I enjoyed the conversation between Matthew and his grandmother. He needs to know the answer to the age old question and the two come up with lots of fanciful answers. Yet, all in all, perhaps one big hug is the best answer of all.

This delightful book for youths 5-9 has a nice Goldilocks effect - it is just perfect!

Great book for grandma's and grandchildren!

How big is love? Author and illustrator, Shirley Hillard tells us simply and wonderfully in One Big Hug. Love is bigger than 2 bugs in a rug, 16 bears wearing a yellow coat, 27 chickens sitting on a goat, or even 100 penguins dancing on a cloud (you get the idea). It is enough when love is one big hug.

One Big Hug is a grandmother's expression of love for her grandson. What is so nice is that all grandmothers can substitute the child's name in the book for their own grandchild's name to personalize the story.

The illustrations are big, bold, colorful and whimsical. They are sure to delight the children and help draw them into the story which is really an expression of love.

Armchair Interviews says: Grandparents will want One Big Hug to read to their special ones. I know I'm looking forward to reading it to mine.

Research, analysis, synthesis. Dr. Howard takes abstract theory and delivers practical actions. This new paradigm seamlessly integrates individual personalities into effective management practices. Hiring, training and optimizing employees (using these principles) should all but eliminate firing. Managers will be able to predict, instead of react. Career paths are planned, not discovered by trial and error. Human Resource management becomes more science than art. Functional deployment of staff is now possible, enabling management to capitalize on each and every employee's natural talents.

Great practical book to read..

I picked up this book after reading "The Owner's manual for Brain" by the same author. This book is short and precise to the point. Every paragraph in the book is written very concisely with specific applicability i real-life. Understanding the principles behind what is mentioned in this book is very helpful in working with people at work and elsewhere. Sure enough, I get less frustrated, but am able to apply the thoughts behind this book and use them in right set, to get the best out of those. A must read for every manager.
I enrolled in CentACS immediately after reading this book!

This is a must have book for any consultant or any individual interested in conducting personality research.

I have been working in the industry for a number of years and I have finally found the one book that seamlessly integrates science and practice. The research is insightful and the recommendations applicable. The Howard's have done a fabulous job of understanding the needs of today's organizational psychologist/management consultants and created the ultimate resource guide and complimentary materials.

Because of this book, I am certain that I am providing my clients with better service, presentation and product! A great read, resource and thought-provoking tool.

As a corporate psychologist, I was pleased to find the serious research underlying this book, although it should be just as appealing to new students and the lay public. It is an excellent combination of literature review and applied science. Particularly valuable are the mappings of Big Five personality factors to various leadership styles (Kotter, Bennis, etc.) and 200 managerial competencies. Additional chapters do the same for approaches to learning, team building, interpersonal relationships, sales skills, and more. This book should soon be required reading within this field.

Being a doctoral student in organizational leadership, I have read most of the books written about personality research, and especially those that focus on leadership behavior. Examining leadership competencies, learning styles, team development, and the application of personality assessment with the book has "simply" further opened my eyes to the importance of improving interpersonal awareness in the organization. The Howard's book is the first that I feel approached the subject from an understandable and practical basis. I use the book daily as I write my dissertation as a reference for practical applications of personality testing with the NEO-PI-R, and how to apply what I have learned from my data in the topic of leadership. It was a pleasure to find a book that allowed me to peruse the table of contents and move right to a section that applied to my current research without having to struggle. A nice thing that the authors have done is to provide a common language that can be used in the workplace with regard to understanding individual differences. This can set the stage for better communication among team members. In addition, I have found that as people understand themsleves better and can speak a similar language it can improve the flow of overall understanding in the organization. The book has opened my eyes to better acknowledge individual differences within teams, and to believe that there is no perfect solution when choosing leaders and team members. The world must incorporate these important individual differences effectively into their organizational structure; so as opposed to sujectively wandering through the personnel challenges of today's workplace, understanding these differences and blending the right mixtures of personality traits can make a difference in determining success. I applaud their efforts, and look for more.

Quinlan has a unique way of portraying a movie start: a few enlightining words about his/her looks and performing capacities. And that goes for his "film stars" book as well as his "film directors" (where he has more room to go into details).
When I went to Britain last week, i looked for a new edition of his "film stars", as the last one I got (and the last one known here in Portugal) was from 5 years ago, the 2000 edition; unfortunately I was told that no new edition had been released.
The "film stars" is a complete and excellent work, though one can always come up with some name that is not included (the one that comes always to my mind is the talented late american actor J.T. Walsh)

No film library is complete without Quinlan

I watched the Oscars with this next to me, and it made them so much more fun! Look up fun, strange and important facts about your favorite stars and see some of the quirkiest, yet best descriptions of the actors you'll ever read!. The author describes everyone by their physical attributes - but it's like reading the cartoon page. This one is guaranteed to make you laugh!

This book has been an invaluable resource for quenching my film knowledge thirst since I got my hands on my father's 1st edition copy around '82 or so. Due to publisher's restraints, author Quinlan gradually, and unfortunately, weeded out entries for lesser known, or no longer relevant, stars over the years. But fret no more! This edition appears to include every entry he's ever created.
Whether you're looking for the complete filmography of the world's most well-known actors (Eastwood), the birthdate of you're favorite cult star (Marie Windsor anyone?), or the names of those long lost Lon Chaney titles, you'll find yourself immersed in this bible of film history.
Quinlan's research is thorough (and I do mean thorough! Before IMDB came around, I'd never seen anything like it), well-spoken, and virtually flawless in its accuracy. This edition is fairly up-to-date (through 2001 I think) & packs many surprises about the status of actors actors you might have already assumed dead, retired or out-of-work. Superb!

Over 20 years ago my parents came to visit me and the children in England and brought over several books for them. One of them was, 'The Animals of Farmer Jones'. They loved it. The last time I saw it, it had a chewed corner and the pages were torn, it was well loved and very well read.
Today my children are 28 and 26 and I bet if I ask them they could still recite most of the book.
I'm coming to the states in a few day and will buy several copies for my friends' children.

(Yes, I still have it). I give this book to my friends and family that have babies. It is a classic--and a must for any child. But, beware--if you had this book as a child, the ending has changed. The pigs no longer say "Oink, Oink"--they are too busy eating!!!! Again, a must for any household that has a small child in it!!!!

My husband brought this book home from the library for our 21 month old son and he LOVED it. We have since purchased it. He will grab the book and say, "Farmer Jones- Read it". It's a great book for kids who are learning the animal sounds as they can join in while you are reading.

If you are looking for great books that kids will love Richard Scarry books are the best. My son literally wore out "Cars and Trucks and Things that Go" and "Richard Scarry's The Best Word Book Ever." The pages are falling out from so much reading.

My son is 21 months old and since we first read him this book a month ago, it has been his favorite of all time. He loves seeing the animals and hearing their sounds. The surprise feature of the book is the hide-n-seek with Farmer Jones. My son loves hearing "Where is Farmer Jones?" on every page but only seeing him a couple times (as if he's hiding). We read it at least 2 times a day.

Great delight for daughter.

The Georgia Connection to the history of baseball.

Not only is the State of Georgia's connection to formation of baseball told, but, how baseball formed us as Americans. Moreover, this book pinpoints how baseball exemplifies and validates our core beliefs as Americans, much more so than football; soccer being so distant from these beliefs centered on individual effort and achievement. It's recollections of a proud father and his son, a focused pitcher. It's a fun trip through the history of the game, its ebbs and flows. For Georgians, it is the story of the city of Norcross and its baseball renaissance. This book is a refreshing critique on the silly PC morays that have taken over our society and how baseball serves as check against these encroachments. Having played 7 years of baseball myself, divided equally between catcher, and third base; I identify and love the book. The author's history channel documentary-like approach to telling baseball's story, and significance, will capture readers who's fingers have not laid across the seems of a Rawlings baseball. I am a life long New York Yankees fan. One word of caution (meant in gest), this author hates the Yankees! The author's favorite team is the Washington Senators. The who? The Twins? Overall, this book is an excellent snap shot of baseball, from our prospective.....Americans.

Many happy memories were evoked by this book for me. Everybody growing up in the 50's and 60's enjoyed baseball and you feel like you are right back there while you read some of the beginning chapters of this story. There are so many layers to this book that you can read it again and again, finding new things to consider each time. Father-son relationships, family values, life in Northern Virginia, the origins of the game...and lots more, all centered around America's original past time.
The only drawback for me was the copious baseball stats peppered throughout the book. I suppose if you are a numbers person though it adds much to the story. Either way this book will get you thinking. Its unexpected ending will leave you smiling too.

This odyssey is as if Mark Twain, Pat Conroy, Thomas Paine, George Will, Helen Hooven Santmyer, PJ O'Rourke and Mike Royko combined forces to write the ultimate history, geography, baseball, child care, coming of age, political and philisophical commentary. It is beautifully descriptive and the conservative and commonsensical punditry dispersed throughout is humorous and thought provoking. The occasional anti-PC rants are not for the feint-hearted, but rather for those whose approach to life is based on love of God, country, family and baseball--but not necessarily in that order.

I thought The Road to the Big's would be an instruction book on how an individual can become part of the baseball life, but it's more of a book about how baseball is a part of everyone's life. Whether we like baseball or not, it's a game we all grew up with and one that is a part of everyone's history. On one level, the author makes hard hitting connections between the popularity of baseball and the philosophical, spiritiual and sociological roots of our country, while on another level soft pitches a delightful story of his own experiences with the game. There's some thing there to hit home with any reader.

With any journey or task in life, a guide is beneficial in making the experience more enjoyable. Dr. Metzger's book is an excellent guide to raising children/teens in the new millennium. The book is extremely easy to read, arranged according to the most common behavioral problems children experience while growing up. The book suggests actions a concerned parent should take with their child, and also cautions which actions to avoid as well. Dr. Metzger's advice is simple, straightforward and easy for anyone to follow.

I feel "The Secret to Happy Children & Grandchildren" is an indispensable guide for any concerned parent or guardian. If you've ever wondered how to help your child through a difficult time, this is the book for you!

At age 57, I became a parent again to my two young grandchildren. I decided that I better do some reading to brush up on my parenting skills that I haven't had to use for a while. I honestly was relieved to find Dr. Metzger's book. His writing style was so easy to read. I found his "What to Do" and "What Not to Do" sections on each topic interesting and informative. But it's the Discussion section that I really like. To me understandng a problem or situation is really the key to being a good parent. By the end of the day with my grandkids I really don't have a lot of spare time to read. That's why I like this particular book. Whether I'm reading about anger or stealing or eating problems, Dr. Metzger gets right to the point.

I highly recommend this book to all parents and grandparents or anyone who comes in contact with children or adolescents.
