I'm a big fan of everything veggietales and Larryboy. Even though I'm 11 years old, I really enjoyed this book. It tells a great lesson in being content with the things you have. If you like the Larryboy or Veggietales shows, you're sure to love this.
The Emperor of Envy makes a formula and puts it into the slushies before the slushie-eating contest starts. When the veggies eat the slushies they become weak because they get so envious.
This book is so funny, it will keep you laughing the whole time you read it. So, if you have doubts about buying this book, don't worry. It's a great book with a powerful lesson.

I love the Larryboy books!

They're so funny, and this one is no exepction.

The Emporor of Envy has been tainting Slushees so that everyone becomes to weak to fight him and his "army" of two sweet potatos (one of which keeps talking to the reader!)

Larryboy is still funny, and the other characters are true to form.

This really entertained me.

Go and read it!

Then go read the others!

Great Book, Superb Pictures!

Review Date: 2008-04-22
If you love the architecture of post-war America, then this is the book for you. I am a huge fan of Wayne McAllister's work and this book gives you the lens with which to view the progression of his buildings which began early on and literally exploded in the 1950's.

We all remember restaurants and hotels and some homes with this man's 'signature' all over them: rock exteriors, large sheets of glass, inset lighting, and brick planters. Some decry this look as cheap and tasteless. But in reality it wed form and function with a certain aesthetic quality that will never be duplicated.

Today, everything from buildings to cars all look alike. That 'certain something' is missing. Still, it is great to look back to a time when restaurants, hotels, motels, and cars looked cool. This book is a walk down memory lane and I return to it often. Well done, Chris Nichols!

Nichols presents an interesting look at many of the historic landmarks of Los Angeles and Las Vegas, painting the picture of times since forgotten. Being in my 20s, many of the landmarks I knew in name only, although I have seen and been to some, but in both cases, Nichols' book manages to evoke feelings of nostalgia and longing. The book is obviously painstakingly researched, and the sheer number of rare and hard-to-find photographs are enough to make any architecture or food history buff go ga-ga.

Nichols gives a nostalgic retrospective on the long live and prodigious output of Wayne McAllister. In no small part, the book walks the reader back through the last 60 years of urban commercial architecture in the southern California region. McAllister lived a very long time, and he was responsible for designing iconic landmarks that at least in the hazy afterglow of memory, epitomise a classic time.

The book is replete with many photos and illustrations, the cover being an example of the latter. The most common image, if not exactly the most enduring, is Bob's Big Boy. I remember in the early 80s, when I arrived in Los Angeles, how these fast food restaurants and their mascots were everywhere. Even getting a cameo role in Terminator. Alas, as the years wore on, the Bob's Big Boys got steadily deprecated. Not many left.

Another type of McAllister's work has also fallen into the tar pits of history. He designed many of the drive-ins that dotted Los Angeles. And which were an indelible part of many teenagers' experiences. Sadly, most are long gone, brought down by the VCR and its successors. At least in the book, you can see several as they once were, at the peak of their glory. Actually, no matter how pretty the architecture, the sound was often bad, the food dreadful, the movies second rate and the nearby cars often had loudmouths.

Great book. But for some readers old enough, there is a certain bittersweet tinge to all this.

Dr. Kisamore wrote a masterpiece. A wonderful and tragic story that allows you to become part of it. The story begins with a brief history of the Kisamore legacy and ends with the sacrifice and glory of a young warrior and hero. Dr. Kisamore masterfully brings the reader into the story. After reading the book, I felt like I had lost a friend and Big Brother. Thank you Dr. "K" for allowing me to get to know " Leo, Your Big Brother".

This is an excellent book that contains the elements of both a great tragedy and comedy. It is strange that these two can exist in a work of non-fiction together. Dr. K's witty writing and sense of humor create a different light to his memories. This book gave me an excellent insight to the horrors of war, and I impaciently await any new releases Dr. K plans to release!

"Leo, My Big Brother" (A World War II Story,in which the author brings a loving tribute to his big brother)

Leo was a WWII hero. He flew off to war and never came home. He had the same dreams and aspirations as all American young men of that era as he bravely went off to fight for his country. He left a young war bride behind as well as a loving family. His life as a youngster, growing up in rural Western Maryland, brings back memories to those of us who lived there and shared those memories. We relive those happy times through the eyes of Dr. Kisamore (the "litttle brother"), and we remember with loving pride and gratitude those young heroes who eventually gave us back a peaceful world.

Nothing brings back memories like this story did.

I also grew up in Cumberland at the time this story starts to unfold. I did not know any of the folks in this naritive. However, a similar story was developing within my own family. I had a cousin who flew in B-17s over Germany. The many of the things that happened to Leo happened to my cousin. Reading this book took my back to the late 30's and early 40's and I could relive my cousin's life through Leo's letters. As a kid, like Norman, I looked up to my cousin and the glorious lives they lived. They seemed glorious until they went on those awful bombing runs. The fact that so many of our boys, like Leo, never returned was the dreadful part of being in a war. Fortunately my cousin returned and the stories he told of what it was like made me feel so bad for Leo and his family. I highly recomend this book for the people who lived through WWII and especially those who were born after this era, so they can better understand what it was like living through these times.

Leo is forever remembered.

Leo did all the things a growing up kid did in a small town in the 30's and 40's. He was the best softball pitcher and player, he had a special car and he had two little brothers that he was "Big" for. His family was so very important to him; he was always thinking of them and they of him. When his B-17 Flying Fortress was blasted out of the sky over Germany in 1943, he was never found and his family never got to say goodbye, but he was never forgotten. In this book, Dr. Norman Kisamore, Leo's littlest brother, has put together this wonderful story so his "Big Brother Leo" will forever be remembered.

This is a powerful book that far transcends medical issues. Although it provides keen insight into recovering from a major medical catastrophe, anyone that reads it cannot help but think about "what if" and how quickly a person's life can be turned upside down. It is a thought-proving book that is appropriate for anyone that is too comfortable with their life and that takes things for granted - which is almost everyone in America.

It's a fact...we are more fragile creatures than we care to admit. It is also a fact that we have FAR less control over our own lives than we care to admit. When you read Matt Stepien's fascinating book, Life After Near Death, you will find yourself confronting those two facts over and over and, in the process, will view your own life differently. Matt's book is an engaging read; I became so engrossed in his story that I nearly read it in one sitting. The events as they unfold, the real-life uncertainties and the remarkable successes of acute rehab care are all gripping components accurately and clearly described with an engineer's analytical voice. However, Matt's sly wit and dry humor made me smile as I read and helped to offset the gravity of some of the situations described. When all is said and done, the support of family and the sustaining strength of hope and faith are the elements that give the book its redemptive payoff. If you take the time to read this book, not only will it enlighten and enrich your life but it will give you an added dimension of empathy for anyone you encounter from this point forward who is struggling to recover from an illness or injury. Read about a miracle....read this book!

I absolutely love this CD. My children are 2 and 4 yrs, and they ask for it every day on our commute. The voices of the narrators are absolutely perfect, (there's just something about hearing "John Boy" from the Waltons tell you a story...Richard Thomas is one of the narrators:).
And I would like to find more work from Christine Ebersole, she is so fabulous, especially the last story, 'Lilly's Big Day'. She captures the voice of a sweet, desperate girl longing to be a flower girl so perfectly, I almost got choked up near the end!
My son adores the first story, 'a weekend with Wendall' and he laughs his head off every time he hears the terrible things Wendall does to Sophie.
I would highly reccomend it!
P.S. Because I'd never read the books, I didn't know until I saw the link here that all these characters are mice! It doesn't say in the CD (except for something about a pink nose and fur, but I just thought that was funny)I think it's great that they're easily imagined either way..

My 7-year-old child has been asking to hear this over and over again since she received it as a present 10 days ago. In my opinion, the production could have used a little music here and there, to make it more lively, but my daughter doesn't seem to need anything more than the CD offers. The narrations (which are by different narrators, both male and female) are clear, and nice.

I have to add, that before she got this CD, my daughter had been watching the Scholastic DVD that includes some of the Kevin Henkes' stories featured in this CD... so that probably helped to make it more alive.

Treat yourself to this chunky Valentine filled with the most delicious and timeless tributes to love. You can read the intimate love letters of such famous couples as Napolean and Josephine, Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, Isadora Duncan and Gordon Craig, and many more. You'll also savor excerpts from famous stories and plays such as Pride and Prejudice, The Velveteen Rabbit, the famous balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, and much more. My favorite section is the love poems, thirty hearfelt selections including the flawless "To My Dear and Loving Husband" by Anne Bradstreet as well as works by Shakespeare, Yeats, Lord Byron, and more romantic souls.

But don't think of this as just a literary anthology. Besides being one of the best in that genre, it also includes tempting meals as a prelude to a night of love. Complete aphrodisiac meals plus tempting desserts like the ultimate chocolate mousse and lemon hearts are guaranteed to keep the Valentine feeling year-long. You'll also find a recipe for fortune cookies which allows you to put in your own message. The recipe is footnoted with lots of suggestions to get your mind brainstorming, like "Birds do it, bees do it, we'll do it tonight" or any other messages you'd like to convey.

A final section includes love songs from the likes of Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, the Gershwins, and others. Of course, for days after reading these lyrics, I found myself constantly humming "I Only Have Eyes for You" by Al Dubin and Harry Warren.

Every page is illustrated with full-color images, over half from the early twentieth-century. They enhance the words, even those from people I never thought of as particularly romantic (Woodrow Wilson, e.e. cummings, John Adams, to name a few). So nice to know that love is truly a universal feeling that touches us all!

This anthology is a pure delight, guaranteed to keep love in your plans 365 days a year.

This is a compilation of poems, classic excerpts from plays and stories, words from popular songs, sweet tasting recipes, love letters, short-short stories, and illustrations that focus on love as a theme. The poets, storytellers, and playwrights represent a who's who of English literature to include Shakespeare (his sonnets), Twain, Joyce, Dumas, and Angelou among other notables. The love letters include Churchill, Napoleon, Darwin (an extract from his famous Journal), and Kafka, etc. The songs are older classics.

The collection is fun, well designed, and can be leisurely read in no particular order as desired by the reader. Cupid struck pay dirt with this wonderful collection that will brighten up anyone's day. THE LITTLE BIG BOOK OF LOVE makes a wonderful unique Valentine's Day present that will not lie on a coffee table, as the recipient will relish the wide variety of tributes to the power of love.

THE LITTLE BIG BOOK OF LOVE, which measures seven by seven inches but is an inch and a half thick, is a marvelous gift for your sweetheart (or yourself!) to be kept on a nightstand or coffee table--perfect for reading aloud or for solitary indulgence. Including both familiar standards not-so-commonly found works, this volume is filled with poems (Shakespeare to cummings to Gillom), story & play excerpts (JANE EYRE to THE VELVETEEN RABBIT), songs (Cole Porter and the Gershwins), recipes (Honey Figs, Seduction Salad, Sinful Chocolate Fondue), letters (Napoleon, the Brownings, E.B. White), and 19th century illustrations (cupids, Victorian lovers, hearts, flowers, and doves). To complete the package are a table of contents and a woven-in red ribbon bookmark to find and mark one's favorites (opening to a random page and reading is fun, too). This is a quality book of quality literature to last as long as your love.

Review Date: 2006-08-14
The Little Book About Big Success is a brilliant handbook designed to help individuals reach success. By analyzing ourselves, which includes a thoughtful look at our past, present, and future, author Charles Holmes challenges readers with the thought provoking question, "Are you really happy?"

The reader is taken on a journey of self exploration. Along the voyage, certain steps are revealed that are key to achieving happiness. The author takes a stand against what we have been taught since childhood regarding what it means to be successful. That deep-rooted message: Happiness means acquiring extreme wealth and surrounding ourselves with superficial goods.

The author takes us on a different path to success, one that leads to true happiness of the self, or in other words, the spirit. A success goal that emphasizes faith and family is as much a necessity to happiness as acquiring wealth. The author asks the reader, "Are you ready to sacrifice your faith and family for success? Can you?" We are asked to look around at our family, loved ones, and faith, and ponder the question, "If I was rich beyond my dreams, and they were not with me, would I truly be happy?"

We are not told how to live, but how to live well, which in turn leads to success. When reading the book, readers find themselves looking inwardly at their dreams and goals which become defined and distinguished. The reader is taken on an exploration to discover how to be happy, both internally and externally, without losing what one holds most dear - family and faith in a higher power.

What makes the book so distinctive and appealing is how the author emphasizes a sense of self worth entwined with family, faith, and relationships with others, which must be put into perspective before achieving financial success.

Charles invites the reader, after self examination, to use his ten important success principles and twelve qualities of successful people. Not only are these tools essential to be successful in business, but essential for what life throws at us.

What makes this book unique and engaging is how it shakes off the stereotypes of what it means to be successful. We all have the courage within us to be successful once we unlearn what society has taught us. The author teaches us that family, faith, and community spirit, are important keys to becoming successful, and as a result, happy.

The book is inspirational because it teaches us that success may not be what has been taught to us: "Only extreme wealth will make us happy and fulfilled." We are asked, "Are you prepared to give up family, faith, and community spirit to be successful?" If so, will you be happy? The author teaches us that "yes," to be successful, there will be sacrifices, but it does not have to be those we hold most dear.

I highly recommend this book to those interested in achieving financial, spiritual and personal success.

A Wonderful Little Treasure ...

Review Date: 2003-08-03
This book is a wonderful little treasure! The author shares her own vulnerabilities with us, and does so touchingly and with humor. Then she points out the "little" sins that we probably very often over look, or hope aren't seen, again with compassion, humor and the Bible to help us deal with these issues. Vanity, shopping for that new skirt just to look better then someone else; broken promises, or failing to followup on what we said we would do; boredom, just "having" to fill in silences with "news" of a friend, etc. This book will make a marvelous Bible study and/or women's discussion topic. Of course, men have the same sins as we do, but this book is directed more towards women's stumbling blocks like "competitive shopping". I highly recommend this book. But don't make the mistake I made and think that just because it is small that it will be a quick read, it is loaded with things to make you stop and think. I spent a lot of time putting this book down to pray for forgiveness over things I had overlooked as sins, and spent much time in contemplation of myself and my actions before I picked the book back up to digest another chapter. I want to share this book with a lot of friends and family, but I will be giving them their own copies. I know I'll be going through this book a few more times to learn some more about myself.

Little Sins, Big Problems by Sarah Onderdonk is a thoughtful and compelling examination of the internal obstacles to personal spiritual growth which we routinely encounter in everyday living. Written especially for Christians, Little Sins, Big Problems aptly discusses the negative effect of small yet taxing sins, ranging from unfair judgements, to materialism, to indolence, and then focuses on how to strive to be a better person in one's own and God's eyes. Little Sings, Big Problems is a welcome and thoroughly "reader friendly" contribution to individual and study group Christian Life reading lists.

I opened "Little Sins, Big Problems" when it arrived in the mail, and I didn't put the book down until I had finished the last page. Afterwards I sat another while and thought about the many ways the book, and its "little" wisdoms, apply to me and my life.

Sarah Onderdonk is a very approachable, friendly writer. I felt like we were sharing a cup of tea and she was simply sharing her knowledge with me in person! At the same time, her Biblical knowledge, scripture quotes, practical advice and "how to"s regarding little sins are well researched, and they really work! At the end of each chapter she reviews what's been shared and asks pointed questions so that you can apply the lessons learned to your own experience.

Ms. Onderdonk also shares personal vignettes from her own life that allow the reader to experience what she went through in the writing (and the life that led up to it!) of this book. I did not feel like I was reading a book that was TELLING me what to do or how to live -- Sarah shares her trials as well as her triumphs and does not talk "down" to the reader at all. Her humanity comes through in chapters dealing with her struggles with an eating disorder, her need for Christian counseling several years into her marriage, loss of family members, and relationships with all kinds of people that require tending. From the introduction about Sarah's run-in with a frisky pepper in the produce department, to her final words of encouragement and humility -- you will be hooked!

Buy this book. Read it! Come back and buy two or three more for your women friends. They will thank you for it!

Sarah Onderdonk commends five starts on this book. Sometimes it truly is the " Little Things" in life that are so important. The importance is to recognize these things and you will have Big changes.I found it enjoyable connected reading, true to the point, and comical. Her story is one that anyone can connect with and find the changes they can make to better serve themself, others and oh of course: Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

I now know, if someone needs help, instead of saying " Let me know if there is anything I can do" It will be: What CAN I do to help you? See what changes YOU can do today!!

Once I figure out what my passion is (I have so many to choose from), I will have all the tools available to live big! Until then, great ideas to live by in today's fast paced society. It is time to slow down and do what we love best! Makes the idea of "giving back" seem effortless.

Pam does a great job of mixing examples of people changing their life to ways to change your own.
The key to Living a full and meaningful life is leaving the box we have been told to stay in.
Most of us stay in our box for life, just because we are afraid of what They say and Think. The problem is They don't Think, so why should we care.
Take some of Pam's advice and break FREE and LIVE FREE. It is the only life and chance you have.

One of the most inspiring books I have ever read!!

Pam Grout's repeating quote is, "Is this all there is?" I know of many people who ask that same question, and go right back to watching TV. (I am also guilty of this.)

Some of the chapter titles are: "Thinking Big, Giving Big, Blessing Big, Imagining Big..." The list goes on and on. There are examples in each chapter of people who have done just that. People like you and me, people with money, or without it, people that come from hard times. People who have jumped over BIG hurdles just to help other people.

We have to learn to give and receive love, without wondering what they "want from us." Stop being so suspicious. One little thing does make a difference. Maybe not to the world, but to yourself, or someone else. Last week, there was a guy that worked at a radio station who was staying in this little tarp-covered contraption 30 feet above the ground until he received 2000 toys to donate to Toys for Tots or until 100 or so hours had passed. When I came to donate, he said, "It feels warm in there." I just had read some of the book that day, and when I made cookies for my school's workroom, I put some aside and delivered some warm cookies to him. When the security guard called him over, he had this little smirk on his face, like I was some kind of secret admirer, or stalker. That part bothered me. It's like no one can do something nice, just to be nice!! So anyway, I don't know what happened after that or what, but just one thing we do for someone else.. well.. doesn't that make us (and them) feel good?

She talks about a woman who stayed in a redwood tree and lived there two years so they wouldn't be cut down, a man who paints huge murals on every wall he can find, a woman who adopted 28 children (not Mia Farrow) and 27 of them have special needs. These are people that we don't know about, because we worship celebrities in movies or on TV. People that are famous just because their faces are bodies are familiar or beautiful to us. I am just as guilty and can be "star-struck" at times. We need to remind ourselves that what we give is what matters, not what we get. We learned this when we were little around the time of exchanging Christmas presents.

Pam Grout mentions that "last year, we spent 40 billion dollars on weight loss products, 98 percent of which did absolutely no good. With that 40 billion, we could give a million dollars a day to a worthwhile cause for the next 85 years. Maybe instead of looking for the next big diet, we should ask: What is the one thing that makes me want to get up on the table and dance? What do I ache for? How can I inject surprise, fun, and outrageousness into this day?" Losing weight gives you a temporary feeling of happiness, but it doesn't last, cause it's not as important as many other things in the world. SUV's, big houses, and lots of money is also NOT AS IMPORTANT. I think we need to be reminded daily of that. Our children, other people, humanity, those things are important, but we spent "10 minutes a day talking to our kids."

This book is wonderful. Everyone should read it, then it wouldn't just be "one person making a difference." It would be everyone working at it. I want to live big. Don't you?

Changed my life for the better.

This book changed my life . I gave it away and now I am buying another copy.
I remember the day I bought it. I was feeling down and depressed. We had money problems, work difficulties, family scabbles, you name it everything was going wrong. Even the dog was givng us a hard time.
Well anyway I read this book in just a couple days and it WOKE me back up. You see I used to be a wild and crazy guy but then I became "civilized". I had gone to sleep in life without realizing it. This book helped me by pointing this out. It happens to a lot of people. Grow up get a job, get a family, get responsibilities and forget that life is supposed to be fun.
This book brought fun back into my life. My family and coworkers have thought I have gone over the edge. I just tell them that I'm back to "normal." For the most part I am "living" again. I can't wait to get my new copy. Thanks.

I found Pam Grout's book, "Living Big," on the bargain rack at my Barnes and Noble book store. I think I paid $7 for it. Boy, was it ever a bargain. Talk about ideas that have the propensity to be life changing...Ms. Grout's book is full of them. I keep her book by my bedside and refer back to it from time to time. The stories inside remind me how being alive can be a magical experience. Since reading it, I know in my heart that I am making a big contribution, even though I'll probably never be famous. Ms. Grout's book shows you, through example, how to take steps to live large.

Sideroad Health columnist Shara Rendell-Smock
certainly has a way with words!
Though I thought her column was informative, I
was really intrigued to learn she had written
a book about tiger training.
I couldn't resist buying it. . .and I'm glad I did!
It's a really fascinating behind-the-scenes book
about a topic most of us don't ever think about
- how the heck DO they train those animals?
(Though that's not the only topic they cover!)
The insight into trainer David Tetzlaff is subtle but powerful
. Definitely one of the most intriguing non-fiction books I've ever read.

Anyone know if she's going to do a book on Health next???

by Mike Cecere [big cat and elephant trainer, asst. manager, Double M Ranch, Hastings NY]

This is the cat book of the '90s! Sharon Rendell has done an incredible job of putting together the exciting story of the Tetzlaffs. She's chronicled the legend of Col. Lawrence "Jungle Larry" Tetzlaff, his wife Nancy "Safari Jane" Tetlaff and their son David Tetzlaff, who many believe to be the top wild animal trainer in the U.S. today.

Not many others have been able to take the nuts and bolts of animal training and make it a story people would want to read. Or adequately describe the years of devotion this family has given to the education through entertainment with wild animals.

Sharon Rendell also takes great pains to interview the leading trainers and zoologists of today to get the real story of what the animal business is all about.

This book is a must for all collectors and circus fans, as well as animal people. Especially important for anyone who is doing battle with the Anti's as this book will give you the facts.

Once you pick it up, you won't stop til you've read it all the way through. A book you'll read again and again. Good job, Sharon!

The price is a mere $11.95 -- a deal at twice the price.

Take it from me, it's a good read!

Now I can hardly wait for the movie version!

This is a Great Book!
