More Larryboy!!!!!!Review Date: 2004-10-19
They're so funny, and this one is no exepction.
The Emporor of Envy has been tainting Slushees so that everyone becomes to weak to fight him and his "army" of two sweet potatos (one of which keeps talking to the reader!)
Larryboy is still funny, and the other characters are true to form.
This really entertained me.
Go and read it!
Then go read the others!

Great Book, Superb Pictures!Review Date: 2008-04-22
We all remember restaurants and hotels and some homes with this man's 'signature' all over them: rock exteriors, large sheets of glass, inset lighting, and brick planters. Some decry this look as cheap and tasteless. But in reality it wed form and function with a certain aesthetic quality that will never be duplicated.
Today, everything from buildings to cars all look alike. That 'certain something' is missing. Still, it is great to look back to a time when restaurants, hotels, motels, and cars looked cool. This book is a walk down memory lane and I return to it often. Well done, Chris Nichols!

bittersweet tingeReview Date: 2007-05-15
The book is replete with many photos and illustrations, the cover being an example of the latter. The most common image, if not exactly the most enduring, is Bob's Big Boy. I remember in the early 80s, when I arrived in Los Angeles, how these fast food restaurants and their mascots were everywhere. Even getting a cameo role in Terminator. Alas, as the years wore on, the Bob's Big Boys got steadily deprecated. Not many left.
Another type of McAllister's work has also fallen into the tar pits of history. He designed many of the drive-ins that dotted Los Angeles. And which were an indelible part of many teenagers' experiences. Sadly, most are long gone, brought down by the VCR and its successors. At least in the book, you can see several as they once were, at the peak of their glory. Actually, no matter how pretty the architecture, the sound was often bad, the food dreadful, the movies second rate and the nearby cars often had loudmouths.
Great book. But for some readers old enough, there is a certain bittersweet tinge to all this.

A poignant story of a Hero remembered by his little brotherReview Date: 1999-10-30
Leo was a WWII hero. He flew off to war and never came home. He had the same dreams and aspirations as all American young men of that era as he bravely went off to fight for his country. He left a young war bride behind as well as a loving family. His life as a youngster, growing up in rural Western Maryland, brings back memories to those of us who lived there and shared those memories. We relive those happy times through the eyes of Dr. Kisamore (the "litttle brother"), and we remember with loving pride and gratitude those young heroes who eventually gave us back a peaceful world.
Nothing brings back memories like this story did.Review Date: 1999-10-29

Best CD for kids I've ever purchasedReview Date: 2008-02-19
And I would like to find more work from Christine Ebersole, she is so fabulous, especially the last story, 'Lilly's Big Day'. She captures the voice of a sweet, desperate girl longing to be a flower girl so perfectly, I almost got choked up near the end!
My son adores the first story, 'a weekend with Wendall' and he laughs his head off every time he hears the terrible things Wendall does to Sophie.
I would highly reccomend it!
P.S. Because I'd never read the books, I didn't know until I saw the link here that all these characters are mice! It doesn't say in the CD (except for something about a pink nose and fur, but I just thought that was funny)I think it's great that they're easily imagined either way..

I have to add, that before she got this CD, my daughter had been watching the Scholastic DVD that includes some of the Kevin Henkes' stories featured in this CD... so that probably helped to make it more alive.

Love Is Here To StayReview Date: 2002-02-17
But don't think of this as just a literary anthology. Besides being one of the best in that genre, it also includes tempting meals as a prelude to a night of love. Complete aphrodisiac meals plus tempting desserts like the ultimate chocolate mousse and lemon hearts are guaranteed to keep the Valentine feeling year-long. You'll also find a recipe for fortune cookies which allows you to put in your own message. The recipe is footnoted with lots of suggestions to get your mind brainstorming, like "Birds do it, bees do it, we'll do it tonight" or any other messages you'd like to convey.
A final section includes love songs from the likes of Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, the Gershwins, and others. Of course, for days after reading these lyrics, I found myself constantly humming "I Only Have Eyes for You" by Al Dubin and Harry Warren.
Every page is illustrated with full-color images, over half from the early twentieth-century. They enhance the words, even those from people I never thought of as particularly romantic (Woodrow Wilson, e.e. cummings, John Adams, to name a few). So nice to know that love is truly a universal feeling that touches us all!
This anthology is a pure delight, guaranteed to keep love in your plans 365 days a year.

The Little Book About Big SuccessReview Date: 2006-07-26
FantasticReview Date: 2006-07-20
An Inspirational ReadReview Date: 2006-08-14
The reader is taken on a journey of self exploration. Along the voyage, certain steps are revealed that are key to achieving happiness. The author takes a stand against what we have been taught since childhood regarding what it means to be successful. That deep-rooted message: Happiness means acquiring extreme wealth and surrounding ourselves with superficial goods.
The author takes us on a different path to success, one that leads to true happiness of the self, or in other words, the spirit. A success goal that emphasizes faith and family is as much a necessity to happiness as acquiring wealth. The author asks the reader, "Are you ready to sacrifice your faith and family for success? Can you?" We are asked to look around at our family, loved ones, and faith, and ponder the question, "If I was rich beyond my dreams, and they were not with me, would I truly be happy?"
We are not told how to live, but how to live well, which in turn leads to success. When reading the book, readers find themselves looking inwardly at their dreams and goals which become defined and distinguished. The reader is taken on an exploration to discover how to be happy, both internally and externally, without losing what one holds most dear - family and faith in a higher power.
What makes the book so distinctive and appealing is how the author emphasizes a sense of self worth entwined with family, faith, and relationships with others, which must be put into perspective before achieving financial success.
Charles invites the reader, after self examination, to use his ten important success principles and twelve qualities of successful people. Not only are these tools essential to be successful in business, but essential for what life throws at us.
What makes this book unique and engaging is how it shakes off the stereotypes of what it means to be successful. We all have the courage within us to be successful once we unlearn what society has taught us. The author teaches us that family, faith, and community spirit, are important keys to becoming successful, and as a result, happy.
The book is inspirational because it teaches us that success may not be what has been taught to us: "Only extreme wealth will make us happy and fulfilled." We are asked, "Are you prepared to give up family, faith, and community spirit to be successful?" If so, will you be happy? The author teaches us that "yes," to be successful, there will be sacrifices, but it does not have to be those we hold most dear.
I highly recommend this book to those interested in achieving financial, spiritual and personal success.

Little Sins that are just as "deadly"Review Date: 2003-05-09
Sarah Onderdonk is a very approachable, friendly writer. I felt like we were sharing a cup of tea and she was simply sharing her knowledge with me in person! At the same time, her Biblical knowledge, scripture quotes, practical advice and "how to"s regarding little sins are well researched, and they really work! At the end of each chapter she reviews what's been shared and asks pointed questions so that you can apply the lessons learned to your own experience.
Ms. Onderdonk also shares personal vignettes from her own life that allow the reader to experience what she went through in the writing (and the life that led up to it!) of this book. I did not feel like I was reading a book that was TELLING me what to do or how to live -- Sarah shares her trials as well as her triumphs and does not talk "down" to the reader at all. Her humanity comes through in chapters dealing with her struggles with an eating disorder, her need for Christian counseling several years into her marriage, loss of family members, and relationships with all kinds of people that require tending. From the introduction about Sarah's run-in with a frisky pepper in the produce department, to her final words of encouragement and humility -- you will be hooked!
Buy this book. Read it! Come back and buy two or three more for your women friends. They will thank you for it!

Words of Wisdom to live byReview Date: 2007-01-15
Passionate to leave your rut in lifeReview Date: 2001-11-26
The key to Living a full and meaningful life is leaving the box we have been told to stay in.
Most of us stay in our box for life, just because we are afraid of what They say and Think. The problem is They don't Think, so why should we care.
Take some of Pam's advice and break FREE and LIVE FREE. It is the only life and chance you have.
One of the most inspiring books I have ever read!!Review Date: 2002-12-22
Some of the chapter titles are: "Thinking Big, Giving Big, Blessing Big, Imagining Big..." The list goes on and on. There are examples in each chapter of people who have done just that. People like you and me, people with money, or without it, people that come from hard times. People who have jumped over BIG hurdles just to help other people.
We have to learn to give and receive love, without wondering what they "want from us." Stop being so suspicious. One little thing does make a difference. Maybe not to the world, but to yourself, or someone else. Last week, there was a guy that worked at a radio station who was staying in this little tarp-covered contraption 30 feet above the ground until he received 2000 toys to donate to Toys for Tots or until 100 or so hours had passed. When I came to donate, he said, "It feels warm in there." I just had read some of the book that day, and when I made cookies for my school's workroom, I put some aside and delivered some warm cookies to him. When the security guard called him over, he had this little smirk on his face, like I was some kind of secret admirer, or stalker. That part bothered me. It's like no one can do something nice, just to be nice!! So anyway, I don't know what happened after that or what, but just one thing we do for someone else.. well.. doesn't that make us (and them) feel good?
She talks about a woman who stayed in a redwood tree and lived there two years so they wouldn't be cut down, a man who paints huge murals on every wall he can find, a woman who adopted 28 children (not Mia Farrow) and 27 of them have special needs. These are people that we don't know about, because we worship celebrities in movies or on TV. People that are famous just because their faces are bodies are familiar or beautiful to us. I am just as guilty and can be "star-struck" at times. We need to remind ourselves that what we give is what matters, not what we get. We learned this when we were little around the time of exchanging Christmas presents.
Pam Grout mentions that "last year, we spent 40 billion dollars on weight loss products, 98 percent of which did absolutely no good. With that 40 billion, we could give a million dollars a day to a worthwhile cause for the next 85 years. Maybe instead of looking for the next big diet, we should ask: What is the one thing that makes me want to get up on the table and dance? What do I ache for? How can I inject surprise, fun, and outrageousness into this day?" Losing weight gives you a temporary feeling of happiness, but it doesn't last, cause it's not as important as many other things in the world. SUV's, big houses, and lots of money is also NOT AS IMPORTANT. I think we need to be reminded daily of that. Our children, other people, humanity, those things are important, but we spent "10 minutes a day talking to our kids."
This book is wonderful. Everyone should read it, then it wouldn't just be "one person making a difference." It would be everyone working at it. I want to live big. Don't you?
Changed my life for the better.Review Date: 2006-04-14
I remember the day I bought it. I was feeling down and depressed. We had money problems, work difficulties, family scabbles, you name it everything was going wrong. Even the dog was givng us a hard time.
Well anyway I read this book in just a couple days and it WOKE me back up. You see I used to be a wild and crazy guy but then I became "civilized". I had gone to sleep in life without realizing it. This book helped me by pointing this out. It happens to a lot of people. Grow up get a job, get a family, get responsibilities and forget that life is supposed to be fun.
This book brought fun back into my life. My family and coworkers have thought I have gone over the edge. I just tell them that I'm back to "normal." For the most part I am "living" again. I can't wait to get my new copy. Thanks.

An Interesting Read about an topic not often coveredReview Date: 1997-11-17
certainly has a way with words!
Though I thought her column was informative, I
was really intrigued to learn she had written
a book about tiger training.
I couldn't resist buying it. . .and I'm glad I did!
It's a really fascinating behind-the-scenes book
about a topic most of us don't ever think about
- how the heck DO they train those animals?
(Though that's not the only topic they cover!)
The insight into trainer David Tetzlaff is subtle but powerful
. Definitely one of the most intriguing non-fiction books I've ever read.
Anyone know if she's going to do a book on Health next???
"The Cat Book of the '90s," Circus Report, Jan. 95Review Date: 1997-01-09
by Mike Cecere [big cat and elephant trainer, asst. manager, Double M Ranch, Hastings NY]
This is the cat book of the '90s! Sharon Rendell has done an incredible job of putting together the exciting story of the
Tetzlaffs. She's chronicled the legend of Col. Lawrence "Jungle Larry" Tetzlaff, his wife Nancy "Safari Jane" Tetlaff and
their son David Tetzlaff, who many believe to be the top wild animal trainer in the U.S. today.
Not many others have been able to take the nuts and bolts of animal training and make it a story people would want to read.
Or adequately describe the years of devotion this family has given to the education through entertainment with wild animals.
Sharon Rendell also takes great pains to interview the leading trainers and zoologists of today to get the real story of
what the animal business is all about.
This book is a must for all collectors and circus fans, as well as animal people. Especially important for anyone who is
doing battle with the Anti's as this book will give you the facts.
Once you pick it up, you won't stop til you've read it all the way through. A book you'll read again and again. Good job,
Sharon!
The price is a mere $11.95 -- a deal at twice the price.
Take it from me, it's a good read!
Now I can hardly wait for the movie version!
