While this book offers an excellent collection of images related to the Bauhaus, it traces the history and the development of the Bauhaus comprehensively as well.
This book, alongwith Eva Forgacs' Bauhaus Idea and Bauhaus Politics can give you a general idea about what the institution was all about.

Its an amazing read.

Bauhaus was one of the most important movements in design-history.
Magdalena Drosta describes the ideas, the people, the work and the spirit of the Bauhaus. The best thing: It is never boring. The book does not only concentrate on the art taught at the Bauahaus but also describes its political problems.
A lot of excellent pictures in a good priniting quality (especially in relation to the price) make this a book, you always like to look at.

What makes this one stand out as a must read book about Bauhaus

If you want a comprehensive historical information as well as tons of full color photos of all sorts of Bauhaus inspired works -from architecture to practical objects - this is the book you should have. Open it and read a single article, think about it and close the book. Or browse through the photos and marvel at the teapots, the furniture, the architectural style.

You can savor this one slowly (and I think you should) rather than trying to read it through all at once. If you do that, you'll start to get a sense of the Bauhaus style and how it fits into the particular period when it came into being - and how it grew and evolved from there.

To know about Bauhaus deeply...

PLANKING, SMOKING, GRILLING - IT'S ALL HERE!

I'm into planking. It is easy and delicious. Planking Secrets is a favorite new book of mine. But I keep going back to the delicious plank recipes in the BBQ Queens cookbooks. They hooked me on Planked Prawns in Bearnaise Butter in their first book Fish & Shellfish Grilled & Smoked. Now one of my favorites is the Artichoke Pecorino Glazed and Planked Chicken Breasts - these make you swoon - no kidding.
If you love great recipes - get this book, it's hard to beat!

Barbecue-licious!

Okay. I was a complete grill greenhorn. I didn't even know how to light a charcoal chimney. But the Queens took me step by step through the process and, drum roll here, it's easy! And I've made some of the best food I've ever had from this book. My favorites are the grilled romaine with the Caesar dressing. Who knew you could grill lettuce, but it's fabulous. I slathered a steak with Porcini Paste, grilled it, and my oh my! I also tried their smoked tomato and basil butter when I got brave enough to venture into slow smoking. It's easy, too. Now, I'm on to barbecued ribs. If they're as good as the Love Potion for the Swine (don't you just love that?) barbecue sauce, I'll be in hog heaven.

A great grill guide for guys!

Guys - don't be frightened off by the "BBQ Queens" title. This is a great guide for men, too. My wife does most of the cooking in the kitchen, but I get to wear the chef's hat on the back deck. This book has helped me do it much more creatively and efficiently. I have only one tiny suggestion -- when lighting a charcoal fire with a chimney, turn it upside down and pack in the crumpled newspapers first -- then set it up and pour in the charcoal -- much easier.

The mystique is that men are better barbecue cooks than women: well be prepared for a surprise when you meet BBQ Queens Karen Adler and Judith Fertig, who are giving the male barbecuer a run for his money. This isn't your usual "Meat Bible", though meat of course is a big feature included too are plenty of recipes for vegetables on the grill, enticing blends of seafood, fancy dishes such as Apricot and Cognac-Glazed Duck: virtually anything to raise the barbecue above the realm of smoke and sauce. A delicious alternative simply packed with taste.

Men might want to sneak a peek too

Women who want to wrest the barbecue tongs out of their men's hands will find all they need to know - and more - in this book. Charcoal, gas, or electric; smoking, planking, or rotisserie; vegetables, fish, meat and side dishes; the BBQ Queens provide a wealth of information and ideas in their fat and sassy (but no-nonsense) ninth book of barbecue.

A thorough discussion of the basics starts things off, followed by an extensive chapter on rubs, marinades and sauces, from the essential (Memphis Blue-Ribbon Rib Rub, Creamy Blue Cheese Dressing) to the intriguing (Lemongrass Marinade, White Truffle Aioli) to the simply delicious (Hot Shallot Vinaigrette, Fennel and Orange Marinade).

Next comes an "A to Z of Grilled and Smoked Veggies, Cheeses, and Pizza," followed by five solid chapters of meat and seafood. Each chapter starts with an easy-to-scan list of recipes. Mini-chapters set off by the color of the paper, showcasing non-grilled sides - various slaws, beans, deviled eggs, desserts are scattered throughout. Recipes include tips for getting it right, accompaniments and variations. This is a busy, busy, book ("Like most women we prefer to do two or three things at once...) with lots of useful advice, and very thorough organization. So, you women who really want to take over the backyard barbecuing - go for it.

"Bear Loves Water" is a chubby "Bear in the Big Blue House" board-book. In this book, Bear talks about all of the things he loves about water. He loves splashing in puddles, taking a bath, drinking it and playing in fluffy snow. He concludes, though, that his favorite thing about it is sharing it with friends.

This is a Super Chubby "board-book," perfect for the youngest readers. This is yet another those books that could probably go in the bath and not suffer any damage. The story is just right for the youngest Bear readers or for any fan of the show.

This is such a sweet and uplifting story, I know we
say that often but the kids and I were honestly touched
by this little penny. I do have two suggestions. I
think it should be broken into chapters because it
seems too long at first. Also the pictures made it
seem like a picture book. But once you realize it's a
beginner fiction book and not a picture book it makes
perfect sense. I'm still giving it a perfect rating
because that's ecxactly what it deserves. Bravo!
I hope to see more from Mr. Edles and company!

this book runs the gamut from joyous hedonism to the extreme visciousness of humankind. I cannot remember the last time I was so emotionally drawn in and captivated by such intelligent, breathing, living characters. This book is a powerful must read for anyone concerned with what makes humanity tick, and the absolute evil that seems so inherently possible. A love story that trancends all generations. This is proof that the human will is a miraculous thing.

Very moving and important work of the drama arts

Review Date: 2007-01-04
Bent is a powerful play about the treatment of gays during the years that the Nazi powers controlled Germany. The play starts with two lovers who are arrested and sent to a concentration camp. There, one of the lovers dies. The survivor however continues to cling to an existence and meets another gay prisoner. They move rocks back and forth across a courtyard all day. The men fall in love, despite the fact that they are in a hopeless situation and are constantly guarded and watched as they gradually starve and are worked to death. The play shows us that love may emerge from the human spirit in even the most bleak of times and places. This drama is well written and very moving. It is an important piece of gay literature, dramatizing a terrible chapter in gay history that is often forgotten and hidden.

Review Date: 2005-09-03
This is probably one of the most important plays I have ever read. It is just about love surviving in the harshest of places. Don't believe the other review about the characters not being developed enough. They are. And the play is amazing. I understand the importance of it in gay literature, but that is not the reason that I feel its important. I just think it needs to be read. The idea that we can tell a person not to love FOR ANY REASON is unnacceptable. Just read it. It may change your life.

One of the most moving pieces of art I have ever experienced

If i could give it more stars i would. Two years ago I was fortunate enough to be a part of a production of this play. Everyone in the world knows of the treatment of the Jews in concentration camps during WWII. Little is known, however, of the treatment of homosexuals that lived and died next to Jews, political prisoners and criminals in these death camps. Martin Sherman sheds light onto this subject in this very chilling and in your face tale of love between two homosexuals in Dachau. You must read this play. It is very powerful and moving. It, along with the documentary Paragraph 175, has changed my life and the way I view alternative lifestyles past and present.
Do yourself a favor and buy this play. You won't regret it.

Review Date: 2003-11-02
I enjoyed this play but I found it hard to feel much emotion for the characters because they were not developed enough in my opinion. The persecution of any group of people, whether Jewish, Gay, Gypsy, or others.. is horrible and should never be condoned. I am glad that this play was written. It sheds some light, however small, on the treatment of Gays by Nazis. More should be written on this topic!

Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill is the third book in the timeless Betsy-Tacy-Tib series. In this latest chapter in the trio's childhood, the girls begin to develop with age and maturity. First the girls turned ten which is a big deal for them, especially for Betsy. They finally have two numbers for their age. The second big moment for the girls is they develop their very first crush on the newly annointed King of Spain named Alphonso. And the third pivotal moment in their young lives is when they meet a community of Syrians in Deep Valley who has not exactly been greeted warmly by its natives. It is so much fun watching the girls grow up in this series. The tone of Bets and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill is slightly more somber yet realistic than the previous two books since it briefly touches on prejudice and unrequited first love. Even as an adult, I still like to pick up and re-read my Betsy-Tacy books for fun.

This is my personal favorite of the Betsy-Tacy series (although picking a favorite is akin to naming your favorite child). It chronicles a pivotal year for Betsy, Tacy and Tib, when they finally have "two numbers in their age". Betsy prophesizes that their tenth year marks the beginning of great things for the trio, like falling in love and traveling the world.

Providentially, the handsome young Alphonso the Thirteenth is crowned King of Spain, giving the girls a convenient target for their first crush. While busily writing a love letter to their idol, the three stumble upon a colony of Syrian immigrants, who aren't always treated so well by their neighbors in Deep Valley. Betsy, Tacy and Tib proceed to make many new friends and learn a few lessons about prejudice and the American dream in the process.

MHL's gift for weaving together uplifting moral lessons with high-spirited adventure makes this a truly special book. She always somehow manages to get across a spiritual message without being heavy-handed, sentimental, or pedantic. Above all, her books are great fun and a pleasure to read.

When Maud Hart Lovelace first wrote the "Betsy-Tacy" series, did she know how much so many people, from children to adults, would love them? The series has at least one book that anyone of any age can relate to. 10-year-olds will love "Over the big Hill," high-schoolers will love the books about when Betsy was attending Deep Valley High, etc. And it doesn't end there! Even if you're not the age that Betsy was in one of the books, you can still love all of them! Maud has a way of capturing real feelings and experiences--even bad ones--and turning them into works of art. The "Betsy-Tacy" series really is a work of art, even if it was painted with a pen, not a paintbrush.

I am the Mom of a preemie who is 6 mos actual and almost 4 months adjusted. We work very hard with her to keep her on track developmentally, especially with books. These are the first actual books that she wants to reach out an grab. The colors and drawings are bright and simple and you can see her focus on them cleary. The book is also very small, about 3 inches square making it easy for her to grab herself. Talking through the items on each page got her talking too making the experience more rewarding. I highly recommend these books for little ones.

I bought this book while visiting my parents during Christmas. We realized that our 1-year old son did not have enough to keep him occupied (this was prior to Dec. 25). We already own "The Okay Book" (which I also highly recommend) so we're partial to Todd Parr and his style (childlike drawings on pages with vibrant, contrasting colors). "BIG & little" was an instant hit with my son, who was carrying it around with him before we even left the store. It's a great mix of contrast and repetition, with each set of pages showing two similar items (vehicles, foods, animals), one drawn on a large scale (banana) and the other on a small scale (peas). Our son has been flipping through the book frequently ever since we got home. The thick board pages are durable and it's small enough for him to hold easily in his car seat as well. While he isn't exactly "reading" it, the concept of big and little is being reinforced nonetheless. Many of Todd Parr's books are good. "BIG & little" is no exception. Buy it - you and your child won't be disappointed.

Also, some better descriptions of painting techniques would have been helpful. The book does inspire me to experiment on my own but it doesn't give enough insight to avoid common mistakes.

Disregard the size of the paintings if you like, and just look at the gorgeous colors and brushwork!!!!! So sensuous. The author is very generous with her information. Her color palette is unusual, and the color schemes she uses are really, really lovely. This is one of the top oil painting books around. I highly recommend it.

An astonishing tour de force!

This book is not only instructional, but a complete course in painting miniatures -- and fills a vast void in that area. The author not only provides excellent reasons for painting on a small canvas, but gives practical advice on setting up space and equipment, preparing the panel (canvas), and staging & lighting the props for a still life. She goes on to review elements of color theory, and presents her favorite complementary palettes. She discusses methods of 'seeing' in order to get the underlying drawing right, and outlines the most important elements of design: composition, perspective, balance, focal point, and texture. Additionally, several methods of creating depth in a painting are covered. Thereafter, Washor presents a series of step-by-step still-life and landscape demonstrations, each of which illustrates yet other enigmatic features of art. She even discusses framing! This book is packed with practical, useful, and instructive advice, and is filled with gorgeous, painterly examples of the author's work to inspire us. What a find!
