Honey... is a great book and really delves into the mindset and thought processes associated with being a loving and sometime ill sided relationship. Wonderful tips for being a positive partner and not getting yourself into hot water, eventhough some of the content is hokie. A good read for just about everyone.

A well-meaning comment can unintentionally wound a woman who struggles with her body image. This easy-to-read book is loaded with practical examples on how to handle sticky situations; along with brief explanations as to why an issue or situation can be problematic. The reader will come away equipped with supportive things to say (or not to say), and improved empathy for the woman trying to heal her relationship with food and body.

This book is a gift to everyone who has ever struggled with intimate relationships: honest, insightful, original, and, perhaps most important, funny. There is hope. Lydia Hanich has deconstructed many of the most common relationship binds related to body image, and offers a path to improved self-esteem and intimacy. The cartoons are hilarious, the wisdom rich and accessible. As a psychotherapist for 22 years, I couldn't recommend it more highly.

This humorous and compassionate book comes to the rescue in what can be awkward attempts to communicate about food and body image issues. Bringing into the open topics that are often taboo, and sometimes excruciating, Lydia Hanich shows us how to take these painful issues out of the closet. When couples can be allies in addressing food and body issues, there's an opening for deepening and strengthening the relationship, in addition to supporting the partner who struggles. As a psychotherapist, I am glad to have this book to recommend!

Where Was This Amazing Book Back Then?

When I finally decided to confront my twenty-year struggle with an eating disorder, I decided to tell my boyfriend at the time. I had no idea how to talk with him about such a complicated topic, so I hid a brochure about eating disorders under a pillow on my couch while I hid under my covers on my bed. I pointed him toward the brochure to indirectly tell him that I struggled with anorexia/bulimia.

If "Honey, Does This Make My Butt Look Big?" had existed years ago when I was ducked under my covers, I would have definitely slipped this incredible book in my couch along with the eating disorder brochure. Then my boyfriend and I would have had the opportunity to learn how to successfully communicate with each other about food and body image issues --- something we never were able to accomplish. Eventually the relationship ended altogether. Lydia's book would have provided tremendous relief at the difficult time of early recovery from my eating disorder.

This book is not aimed specifically toward people touched by eating disorders. It is for anyone whose life or romantic relationship has been invaded by struggles with food and body image. Unfortunately, in our diet-obsessed culture, that includes countless men and women. Lydia helps in a way that no one else has ever attempted. And her way is absolutely hilarious. If you decide to read "Honey, Does This Make My Butt Look Big?" with your `honey,' you will both laugh out loud. You will have fun while you learn and are drawn closer together.

Written in a bite-size format, the book can be read here and there whenever you get a chance. And it is so small that it can fit anywhere with no trouble at all --- your briefcase, handbag, or even tucked away inside --- your furniture.

You never know when a difficult conversation might be waiting up ahead.

This book has taught me to think differently. I especially liked the chapters on the four ways people relate to God. I would recommend this book to everyone. It's an easy read and the short chapters and related stories keep your interest. Our chapel women's group will start to read it as a group next month.

I recommend this book to anyone looking to integrate their understanding of Eastern Spirituality with Western Christianity. No dogmatic, syrupy sermons here: this book is a delightful mix of theology and "out of the box thinking." Fr. Coutinho reminds us that we are each a sacred expression of God. His wonderful stories make the message come alive. I'm a recovering Catholic with eight years of parochial school training. Fr. Coutinho has re-awakened my interest in the religion I abandoned years ago.

A gentle book to remind us that we each carry deep within us our pwn personal image of God. Sometimes that image may be coloured by experiences or memories that need to be faced so we can find a truer image of God. My husband has purchased five copies of this book to give one to each of our five children, aged from 46 to 38. to encourage them as they journey through life.

This book played havoc with my day -- and incredibly enriched my life! When I picked up my new copy it was to just fill 15 spare minutes. But I finished it in one sitting. Can't recall when that's ever happened before. What an incredible journey! I am almost breathless, and yet so full of energy. What's a half day balanced against the rest of a life? This book is both challenging and affirming. More than that, it's so encouraging and insightful. And the little stories -- I am going to steal every last one of them if only I can recall them in the right circumstances. Heck, if I remember only one just once in my life, the world will be better for it. As I turned the pages I found myself making a list of family and friends with whom I have to share this book. Thank you, Paul Coutinho.

This book is great for anyone who does not have any idea about starting a surplus products business. But for those who are looking for something truly insightful and meaty you will be dissappointed. The practice of "Buy Low, Sell High" are covered well but not much more. The editing and grammar are some of the worst I have ever seen for a professionally published book. It would fail a 9th grade english class. Overall I was dissapointed with the book. It didn't nearly satisfy my need for more in-depth information.

The book makes a strong case for starting a surplus/liquidation business. It gives step by step instructions on what needs to be done to succeed in each of the five business structures: surplus dealing, closeout brokering, liquidating, auctioneering, and mail order selling. Highly recommended. I also recommend Donny's "The Guide for Penny Stock Investing." If you invest in penny stocks, this book may help increase your overall returns.

My husband, I and our 7 year-old love this bubble book and wand. There is a recipe in the book for the bubble liquid and it works great. The wand is easy to use, and is easy enough that my daughter can make HUGE bubbles. This is my new "birthday gift" for kids. A great outdoor activity for the whole family! (Hint: Buy an extra wand...it's worth it!) The Amazon.com price for the book was the best I had found in April '08 when I bought it.

Brings back many fond memories of when I was a child. I had this same book and kit. I spent many many many hours blowing bubbles and entertaining the younger children in the neighborhood. Same great quality and easy to read book that teaches techniques and facts. The best bubble making formula has changed though, so don't go buy the ingredients until you read the new formula.

We have had a lot of fun with this product. The recipe for the bubble solution is easy and can be stored for weeks and it only takes a little practice to get the hang of making the big bubbles. Granted, I haven't had luck with making the 10 ft. bubbles they mention in the book, but you can get some really big ones! Keep in mind that humid weather is essential for these bubbles, if it's too dry it gets frustrating. We have had ours for a couple years and it still works great (just rinse the solution out of the wand when you're done) so I've started buying them as gifts. We love it!

I bought a bubble gadget YEARS ago and did make incredibly huge bubbles like the author claims is possible, and spent MANY hours playing with it, HOWEVER what changed is the dish soap used to make the bubble solution. Remember when all the dish soaps went "Ultra", as in ultra concentrated and grease cutting? Truly giant bubbles were forever ruined by this! I even called one of the big soap companies and begged them to sell the old recipe as "giant bubble soap", but they wouldn't do it. Maybe the author could use some of his "bubbleologist" (expert bubble maker) pull to persuade them? (Hint: the initals are J&J) I tried for so long to make good bubbles after the switch, but lost interest because they just didn't compare to the old version.

Henry Ford would have loved "Instant Guts!" He said, "Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right." What a positive and empowering audio. I received "Instant Guts" as a gift, and highly recommend it for friends you know need a little encouragement to grow. Joan Gail Frank obviously understands the frustrations and obstacles--the little things that keep us from doing what we long to accomplish. She also recognizes how the decisions we make to do a thing...or not to...help define who we will become and how we feel about ourselves in this life. Clever, fast-paced, and insightful, "Instant Guts" is absolutely inspiring and whether one is considering a change of jobs...or of hemispheres...there is a universal message in this book: "Go for it!"

Outstanding - A VERY Helpful Motivational Tool.

Truett Cathy is one of those people who changes the lives all around him. Instead of giving advice and moving on, Truett has "lived the story" and literally made a difference in thousands of people's lives.

In this short, wise book, the founder of Chick-Fil-A shows us the value of mentoring and the high worth of fathers. A great gift for Father's Day, but a wonderful addition to any library on any occasion.

There's a lot of wisdom here: this book is inspiring and filled with hope!

Raising young boys to be young men - wisdom for the journey
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-18
Truett Cathy, founder of the Chick-fil-A empire, shares a wealth of experience and wisdom in this little gem of a book. Using Proverbs chapter 22 as his inspiration, Cathy writes about how young men need the guidance of an older man in their lives to put them on the right path. Cathy has been teaching a Sunday school class for young boys (age 13) for the past few decades and also has his WinShape program that provides a home, love and an opportunity to countless young boys needing direction and discipline in their lives. From this long history of helping young boys become young men, Cathy draws some basic principles for putting boys on the right path in life.

The first admonition that Cathy shares is that a boy needs a father in the home - present, engaged and caring. He follows with wisdom how to train a young boy into a young man through words of encouragement, modeling the example for them to see, and giving them opportunities to learn life lessons on their own. Cathy talks about the importance of teaching young men how to handle money as well as how to pick the right life-mate.

The book is short, easy-to-read, and packed full of practical wisdom and heart-touching stories from Cathy's own life and experience. This would be a wonderful gift for any father raising sons. Cathy is a Christian and his values and beliefs are grounded in God's Word and this comes across with simple clarity in the book, just like it does in the management of his billion dollar company.

Easily one of the most beautiful books that I own, a masterpiece within the genre of the illuminated journal, and a treasure among natural history books. It is a celebration of sensorial intelligence, the gift of a full-bodied rapport with the breathing earth. To delve and read within this book, drinking with your eyes the colors and the sinuous lines and the astonishing textures that explode from the text and blossom on the pages, is to feel your skin becoming more porous, to feel your thoughts becoming far more supple and awake to the more-than-human life of the land around you.

Whenever I wander into this book, I'm struck with gratitude to the author/artist, and with a deepening sense of wonder...

I have followed Hannah Hinchman's published work for some years now. I have found it most helpful in enabling teachers to help children to observe closely and make graphic fieldnotes in places where they can learn first hand about their own local natural environment. I am in the process of taking some leave to continue with my own professional writing in Europe. I am keeping my own illuminated journal of how the seasons are changing the natural environment here in central France. This book is a delight to return to every day or two. I have looked through it with my nine-year-old granddaughter who does not speak English and we found so many things to discuss in it. As well as being an authoritative work on a place in Montana, U.S.A., it is also an excellent resource for anyone interested in looking closely at the natural world around them anywhere!

The artwork in this book is lovely and the sketches of the author's dog are captivating. Her paintings of the Montana landscapes transported me back there in the time it took to turn the pages. She captures the wide open spaces and the feeling one has when out walking in those lovely fields and mountains. My heart sank when I started reading her commentary and came across her views of those who hunt or make their living on the beautiful Montana land. While she apparently has developed the skill to communicate the beauty of the Montana flora and fauna, Ms. Hinchman has not yet learned to see the beauty of the people of Montana. I am sad to say that reading those few comments kept me from purchasing the book and I don't think the book would have been any less if those comments had been edited out. While she fancies herself an observer of nature the hunters, loggers and ranchers she ridicules have observed the Montana landscape and its creatures with a greater love and respect and for a much longer time than she has. I would recommend this book for it's illustrations but not for the author's views.

"Little Things in a Big Country" is an artistic journal chronicling one year in the artist's life in the eastern part of Montana, known as the Front. The words and watercolors in this book work together beautifully to convey Ms. Hinchman's careful observations of the world of The Front. Her sketches include things as common as seed pods, animal tracks, and ice formations. What a treasure this book is! Reading it gave me a new appreciation for the power of keen observation of the world around me.

This was the first artistic journal I've come across, and as a new (to me, at least) genre of book, the form impressed me.

This is such a calming and inspiring book, one that I will enjoy reading again and again.

Magic the Cat: Sometimes a Great Notion
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-07
Despite the title, this stylishly illustrated book is not about Laker great Magic Johnson. Even the beginning, however, suggests the point guard's choices as he drives down the court:

"Magic contemplates his next move. Should he go in? Or Out? Or should he stay right where he is."

Before I suggest that Magic loft up one to a soaring Michael Cooper for a "Coop-A-Loop," let's turn to the dilemma facing Magic the cat. Each of the above choices entails different benefits, and all of them are tantalizing to a cat generally hungry for adventure, sleep, and food. For example, if he leaves his home, "maybe he could chase the loons. He'd hunt them along the rock shore, stalk them through the reeds, leap after them, then eat them." (It looks like the loon just got away in time in the pictures showing Magic's fantasy.) Magic continues to ponder the possibilities; We see him envision swimming under the water to catch the brightly colored salmon, riding a moose to the bears' island, and sharing a meal of salmon and blueberry pie. This sounds good! But then again, "maybe not. Maybe if he stays right where he is, Magic's next move will come to him." And that's exactly what happens, as the big round cat gently falls asleep on the front porch.

In addition to writing an imaginative story about imagination, Elisha Cooper's watercolor and pencil drawings are outstanding. His drawings recall those of Barry Moser with their soft colors, excellent depiction of light, and use of "white space." Cooper paints fairly realistically, but he also lets you see his watercolor technique as well. Much of the action is seen from the cat's eye level, but Cooper knows when to pull back to show you gorgeously illustrated panoramas of water, hills, and the cloud-adorned sky. Like most good daydreams, the book is both engaging and calming at the same time. This is a peaceful and beautiful book for story time and bedtime. Once again, a quality book from Greenwillow publishing. Very highly recommended!

This is one of the best books about animal sounds ever written. I teach 2 year olds at a daycare center and this is the only book they will sit through from beginning to end. This book even has the other teachers impressed when they peak in my room and the toddlers are all sitting at attention. We read it nearly every day!

Strongly recommended.

Tomie diPaola's absolutely gorgeous illustrations carry this simple animal-sounds poem to the next level. I like the inclusion of the animal world beyond the barnyard - there are dozens of books informing children that ducks quack and cows moo, but this one includes howling coyotes, creaking crickets, squawking parrots, and chattering monkeys. My 8-month-old adores this book and turns the pages eagerly to see which animals come next.

I began reading this book to my daughter when she was 19 months old. Before about that age, she had said very little, mostly animal sounds. Then suddenly, speaking was all that interested her. So this beautiful poem seemed a triumphant expression of her newly discovered voice: "I talk!" A month of very frequent (on request) readings later, my daughter helps by "reading" all the verbs. I think this might be my favorite of her books. It appeals to both her toddler aesthetic and my grown-up one.

With restrained colors, this board book is a fun poem to read aloud, with plenty of ways to expand upon the story. Cute drawings, plenty of opportunities to make animal sounds. For example, "Crickets Creak / Mice Squeak / Sheeps Baa/ BUT I SPEAK.... Horses Neigh / .. BUT I SAY... / Parrots Squawk / BUT I TALK"

Adorable

The three children are absolutely adorable. The animals are cute. The word bites in this book are short and to the point. This is a great book for toddlers and early pre-readers. It can easily keep the attention of both of my children. I enjoy reading this book to my children and have yet to get tired of it. Certainly, this book is a good addition to your child's library.
