This was an inspirational and enlightening book. The idea that we all have egos is not novel but the way in which you are prompted to think about dealing with one's ego is unique and easy to adapt to whatever situation you may be in. The techniques can be utilized in any personal, business, or happenstance situation. I think this is a must read for anyone with a boss!!

This book is a great primer for handling difficult people, which is a large percentage of time for anyone working, whether co-workers in a large company or customers/vendors/employeees in a small company. Practical approaches to dealing with problems and turning them into your advantage. Reminds me of One Minute Manager in its simplicity yet practicality. Quick read, yet I got several ideas that affect my business immediately.

This sensitive, whimsical tale of coping with ones uniqueness is one of my favorite stories for my kindergarten students. The language is rich and descriptive. The illustrations are vivid and immaginative. My students laugh at the funny parts and they understand the heart of the story-regardless of ones differences, be they bespectacled or of uncommon name, each person is valuable just by being him or herself. Even as adults we have things that we wish we could change, or swear our lives would be better without. This book is a cute reminder that our strengths are what we should focus on, and the things we wish we could change aren't all that bad afterall. Great little book.

Luna is a great character, easy to identify with her ups and downs when one discovers the need for glasses in their life. Great addition to my son's Optometrist Office, making it an understandable situation for the younger group when receiving the news of having to wear glasses and when doing so, the world around you becomes so much easier. Now the children visiting his office for check-ups go immediately to this book, sharing the story with their parents, over and over again. Great book, great story. "One Happy Camper!!!"

We like to have books in our Family Eye Care Clinic for kids to read while they're waiting for the Doctor, it just seems fitting to have books about glasses/seeing the eye doctor. I found this book to be an exceptional book to have in the waiting area. We also have books like Arthur's Eyes, Glasses for D.W. and Good Luck Glasses...all three of these are also excellent.

Visual Journey
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-25
My first impression was that this book was overly stocked with pictures. However, on a second look I could see the benefit of grouping items together and putting many items on one page. You can teach many items that relate to other items you will find in your home or in the world as you travel.

This is a visual journey for children that includes 800 brilliantly colorful pictures. Even the inside covers are "covered" with pictures. For the young child, you can start with the familiar items around the home like a lamp, a vase, a telephone, bed, toothpaste and highchair.

The section on clothes teaches all the basics...then onto the toys. That will most likely be one of the favorite areas in this book. Cooking and baking might encourage more adventure in the kitchen. Maybe using this book to introduce a child to the names of kitchen essentials will get them interested in making something delicious.

Other sections include: Food to eat, Fruit, vegetables, In the workshop, Flowers and plants, Weather, and Seasons and times. Then onto: On the farm, In the countryside (love the meadow picture!), Big Animals, Small animals, Baby animals, Birds. The theme changes constantly and next you will see hot-air balloons and everything that flies in the sky.

Children who live in the city will love: In the sea, At the seaside, Noises, Animal noises (you have to love the mouse on this page!). Children in the country will love: In the city, Buildings, Building machines, Shopping (yummy markets and bookstores). In the jobs people do, children are dressed up in each of the main job descriptions.

"Me and My Body" is a section to explain the names of the mouth, back, eyelashes, teeth..etc. Things we do such as crying, touching, eating, throwing a ball, hiding, laughing are all pictured with the word of the activity. Shapes and patters lists the main shapes at the top of the page and then you can find the patterns and shapes in what you see in the pictures.

For instance, the red square looks like the windows and the star looks like the starfish. The counting section is especially tasty with all sorts of candies to count.

Then, the next page opens and you see hills, deserts, a waterfall, a river, a volcano and much more. Each word has a picture and each picture is a delightful look at the world around us. To easily find a word your child is learning...just use the handy index to look up words like store, toothbrush, jaguar, cyclist or even beach.

I bought this book for my son when he was about 14 months old, and he loved it from the first moment he laid eyes on it. Now, at almost 21 months old, he's still fascinated by it and can name about 75% of the pictures in the book. It is organized into categories so that kids learn which things go together (e.g., apples, bananas, and grapes are all fruit). We take it almost everywhere, but it is especially useful on long car trips. While in the car, we can find things we see outside and then figure out where they are in the book, or at least what category they might go into if they aren't in the book.

I haved tried to purchase this for friends' children, but to no avail; this version seems to be quite hard to come by.
Nearly as good is the updated "My Big Word Book" by Roger Priddy. I think the layout of that book is more attractive, but I worry about the durability of the spiral binding. All in all, however, I have yet to find a Priddy book that wasn't a big hit with my toddler!

My 18 month old twins just love turning the pages of this book and looking at all the pictures. I bought this book when they were less than a year old, and they would be overjoyed when I would sit down with them and point out and name the different objects on the page. Now that they are older, they want to hold the book and turn the pages for themselves and in the process have torn many pages of this much loved book. I think this book is a great teaching tool for parents of young children.

Worth the buy (again) for my younger children

This is the third time I am purchasing this book. The first two were so loved and worn that the pages eventually fell out. Now my two year old is interested in naming everything under the sun, and he deserves his own Big Book of Everything. If he wears through this one before my 6 month old is ready for it, I'd buy a fourth.

Not just for 4 and up...

I've given this book (and its earlier editions) often as a new-baby gift for babies in the US and abroad. I feel that it's a great present for non-native speakers, because of all the words you only learn in your native language!

My granddaughter, age 22 months has loved it for about the last year, as have other very young children I know. For a while, she called it "a book" -- that is, the only one she really acknowledged. She's now branched out to other books but still enjoys identifying the photos in this one. She doesn't care if they're obscure, she likes discussing them, and her favorite pages vary over time. Like the other reviewers, I'll soon be buying a new copy as the first one is wearing out. Maybe the publisher should consider a hard-page edition.

Love Lisa Wingate's style. I live in Central Texas and am familiar with some of the hill country local color. Her stories are enchanting and capture the fun and "only in Texas" out of the way places that tourists often miss.
Romantic, funny and always a touching story. This is the third in the Hill Country series and I've read "Texas Cooking", "Lone Star Cafe" and now "Over the Moon at the Big Lizard Cafe" and loved each one. If you like old fashioned romance, Texas humor and a good read you'll love these books.

I enjoyed this third book in the Texas Hill Country series by Lisa Wingate.

In this book, Lindsey Attwood, sister of Laura Draper, is very stymied and unhappy with her life back in Denver Colorado. She has a young daughter Sydney, 8-years-old that is off to spend her first summer in Mexico with a Dad who never wanted to know her until now, strangely enough. Geoff and Lindsey divorced bitterly once Lindsey became pregnant, and he did not want the child. So ever since that time, Lindsey has kept herself and Sydney in a "closet," so to speak in their tiny apartment with nothing exciting happening.

But there begins a turning point in Lindsey's life when she is called on a mission by her sister Laura to help recover stolen dinosaur tracks. And since Lindsey is a skilled palentologist, this is her field. So she drives 1,000 miles to Texas on Jubilee Ranch. She will also have to pose as a horse psychology patient, and it is there that she meets Zach, whom she is attracted to instantly. And whether she likes it or not, she can't stop herself from falling in love.

In horse psychology class, Lindsey finds out about her relationships to people through horses. It takes awhile before she loosens up to a horse, Sleepy, and can put life in perspective.

That is not the only thing though. Never having been a great animal lover, she encounters a stray dog, that automatically takes to her. Mr. Grits is a dog nobody loves-except maybe Lindsey actually will? The story tells this as you read.

Toward the end of the book, Sydney's father brings her back to the ranch early. In shock at the vacation being cut short for Sydney, Lindsey wonders why and finds out that Geoff ran off again from his new wife because she was pregnant. Fatherhood was not in his plans-but there is a single event that changes all that and Geoff changes.

Lindsey is truly afraid of new steps in her life, and once Syd comes back to her, she is all set to drive back to Colorado-for sure. She is afraid to take a leap of faith in new life challenges that will change life perhaps for the better-like it was meant to be.

I liked this book. Know that before reading further.

However, this book is part of a series and they are all the same. Collie, Laura and Lindsey are best friends. The first book, Texas Cooking, featues Collie as the main character. The second, Lone Star Cafe', features Laura and now Over The Moon at the Big Lizard Diner features Lindsay.

In all three books, the main character (Collie, Laura or Lindsey) ends up in Texas on a job that was to take them there only a few days. But in each book, they met a cowboy that was not their type, fell in love after a few days anyway, then they were offered a beyond belief dream job that they had been waiting for their whole lives.

At that point, in each book, the main character had to decide on living their dream or if this cowboy was their soul mate.

All three of the books are good as a stand alone. But read together, one after the other, and it is like the movie Ground Hog Day where the same thing happens over and over and over.......

The "big boys" learned long ago how to create networks and gain visibility through "personal publicity," aka "toot your own horn!" Women generally show far too much humility about their talents and skills. If we want people to value our skills, we must first show that we value ourselves -- by making sure our accomplishments are visible to targeted audiences. If we want people to hire us, promote us, buy from us or invest in our companies, they have to know who we are, what we have accomplished and why they should do business with us! Self-promotion isn't bragging. It is a valuable business tool that career women must add to their strategies for success. (from Marion E. Gold, award-winning author of "The Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU")

Living a seemingly normal life in a normal town, young Zak, his dog Ziggy, and his best friend Ivy are suddenly greeted by a strange and unfamiliar character named Professor Aquius Botanicus Angelicus. Stranger still, the professor has arrived on planet Earth in search of the pure water he needs to fuel his spaceship. One would think that on a planet that is 70% water this would be easy...however, Professor Angelicus and the children discover that finding pure water on a planet subject to ever-increasing pollution by humans is not that easy.

And so the journey begins, as the crew searches for pure water in lakes, oceans, and rainforests. Along the way the children meet and request help from the most unlikely characters: a talking French butterfly, King Crab, Dolphin, and an evil monster that morphs into its victim's greatest fear. By stating pertinent facts about our environment and "teaching without preaching," author L.B.B. Ward does an excellent job of interpreting relevant scientific and social topics. Covering natural history, biology, pollution, war, peace, respect, and community involvement, Ward explains how to become guardians or "sharelings" of the Earth. The author's personal closeness to nature, humanitarian spirit, and gentle voice provide a most needed call to action with this imaginative and clever new adventure novel.

Ecological issues and a charming story

Review Date: 2004-12-11
I thought Prof. Angelicus was a beautifully written and challenging book. It broaches sensitive ecological issues in a thoughtful and engaging manner for young readers while not being didactic. Although, it sometimes has a tendency toward the polemical when it tries to do too much in a given chapter.

The novel tells a charming story with a sensitivity for the biological and the sciences in its use of specific nomenclature and in its specificity to earth processes. It certainly doesn't "talk down" to its young readers. The spiritual overtones will challenge young readers, however the overt Christian motifs and "capital G" God may be exclusive to children of other faiths.

The vocabulary, reading level and subject matter puts the novel in the 10 - 14 age range for me, yet the protagonists seem younger. Generally, young readers like to read about characters the same age or slightly older. Some children may take exception to Zak and Ivy; however the timeless themes and wonderful writing can carry the novel.

My own children, 12 and 14, seem to concur saying that the book was good and raised many questions about our relationship with the Earth, but there were times when the main characters seemed "babyish."

Definitly more stories of this calibre need to be published as they challenge children to consider our inherently mutualistic relationship with the Earth - a relationship we are compromising daily.

I used to think Fred Gleeck was a smart guy. Then I read this book. When I saw all the secrets Fred gives away for under (...), I thought, 'maybe Fred ain't so smart after all'.

In Publishing for Maximum Profit, Fred lets you in on everything he knows about making money as an author. This is the info he charges hundreds of dollars an hour for as a consultant. He covers everything you need to know, but the most important is how to develop additional, higher-priced products that you can sell to fans of your books. This is critical. It shows you how to make a good living as a writer without writing a bestseller.

This information is extremely valuable. At a Book Marketing Boot Camp put on by Mark Victor Hansen, editor of the Chicken Soup for the Soul Series, one of the speakers, Jerrold Jensen delivered his top ten list for authors who wanted to sell more books and make more money. #4 was "see Fred Gleeck!

isn't this just what everyone wants....a grown up play house? what a charming book, with luscious photos of dreamy locations....tucked away in the woods or just behind the clothesline in the back yard. loved the writing and the photos....and the stories of how each of these tiny houses changed the lives of the owners. some are modest....some extravagant...all imaginative and reflective of the inhabitants who created a little space all their own.

Dreamy Sheds Drawn One In

Debra Prinzing's newest book is a wonderful collaboration with William Wright, as photographer. Together, they documented fantastic outbuildings across the United States. These artist's retreats, decorator paradises, and architectural jewelry for the main house can sometimes scarcely be called sheds, but Ms. Prinzing makes all of us feel like friends who have dropped over for a glass of iced tea on a sunny afternoon.

I knew I was in for quality enjoyment when I opened the book, and the first line paraphrased Virginia Woolf's "room of one's own." Hasn't every writer or artist longed for such a place? I know I have, and now I have several templates from which to choose.

What a lovely book!

Debra Prinzing describes "salvaged" spaces as individual as their owners, detailing how such private places inspire the writers, artists, architects, gardeners and other creative people who are as interesting as their imaginative structures and favorite collectibles. From imported antiques that furnish the elegant outdoor dining room at the Babcock-Nahra abode to the rustic charm of the Boltons' Texas barn and the Suttons' graceful Japanese teahouse, these hideaways will make readers yearn for their own cozy nooks.

Debra Prinzing hit a home run with this book! How did she manage to locate so many creative garden houses and sheds, and each so unique? (Yes, she explains all that). There must be something about having your own special structure that fulfills some primal need in us. Those amazing structures she has included in the book are so personal you feel you have been given some insight into the character of the owners. As for me, I found myself dreaming about building my own garden house. It is easy for me to visualize it as an art studio, but also a place conducive to writing, as well as a wonderful place to escape to and curl up on a comfortable couch with a good book and a glass of wine ... while feeling attached to the outdoors as a gentle rain is trickling down the window panes. Debra, thanks for all the great ideas!

I'm one of the lucky shed owners in this book Stylish Sheds and
Elegant Hideaways. And I'm a lover of modern design. When looking through books and magazines I'm always flipping quickly trying to find the "good stuff". Debra Prinzing found the good stuff for her latest book.

This book has several contemporary designs, but I found the other sheds just as beautiful and interesting. I guess that's the style and elegance. Perfect title for the book.

William Wright's photos are gorgeous. He captures the sheds in their surroundings which makes this book a good tool for designing your own backyard oasis.

I want to use many of the great ideas I got from this book. In the chapter Poetic License the Italian tile is installed upside down and the Nordic pavilion in San Francisco has a grass roof. The glass block ceiling in the Manhattan shed makes a great sky light.
Plenty of planting arrangement ideas in every chapter. I go on garden tours to get ideas. With this book I can visit 28 gardens and their sheds from my easy chair.

I don't think I'm biased because I'm in this book. Just Lucky.

I just received this set along with the other Little Golden Book cd sets. It's wonderful, very well done, very enjoyable for all it's listeners including the parents. The voice is friendly, lively, very clear, and the sound effects of the assorted animals adds to the telling. It does let the child know when to turn the page with a small bell sound. You could just as easily listen without the book, and the sound wouldn't be much of a distraction. It really isn't expense and it's well worth it.I will definitely be waiting for more of these sets to come out.

The original cassette tape included the wonderful song "Carrot Stew" which was what really made the story so fabulous. Unfortunately, the CD does not have the song on it. What a shame. The song is so cute that we still sing it after 26 years! Someone needs to put it back in!! The fact that the song is not included should have been put in the product description. The book itself is great, but with the song, it's wonderful.

This gem is one of the Golden Book classics, first published 1952 and it's as delightful now as it was then. Besides, any book which describes a lion as "jolly as all get out" is sure to be one little readers will love.

I liked a lot of things about this book. It's a short read in that it's a series of statements by folks with 'answers' from God in bold below them. Each statement/answer then is a stand-alone thought that can be read and appreciated for itself. I think that God watches Judge Judy on occasion. One person says, "God, I feel like believing in you is a complete waste of my time." God answers, "I know the feeling." Another statement hit home strongly with me. A man tells God that keeping his pickup truck from starting won't stop him from going out & getting drunk that night. God tells him the truck will start after he's gone back inside to say goodbye to his mother who won't be there when he gets back from the tavern. His Mom dies in his arms, in the house, 2 hours later and the man has not had a drink since.

Unfortunately, for me personally, there are several examples of answers from 'God' that perpetuate the 'fire and brimstone,' "You're going to burn in Hell forever" God that turned me off to Him years ago. Fundamentalist Christians will love them but I tend to take that kind of statement with a grain of salt and look for the loving message that I know underlies it if it's really from God. I highly recommend this book as something to have handy for a quick pick-me-up since you can open it almost anywhere and find a useful inspiration of some kind. Even the ones I disagree with make me think and that's not all bad. It was worth the price to me.

I am an avid reader.Having read many books through the years Christian and Non-Christian.I have been helped and blessed by some, entertained by others, but I found this book to be Inspired.I could give this to my teenaged grandsons, best friends,or my mother and all would be able to enjoy and relate to it. It is refreshing and insightful. It will allow you to chuckle, touch your heart and your soul.Give you peace of mind and spirit. Each home would profit by having this book accessible to family members and friends. Its message is profound and I would recommend it as a wonderful gift .

The concept of God, seemed a little far fetched.

A friend knowing my feelings about God, sent me this book. Be it a real or an imaginary God in this book, it is a God I can believe in. It feels good not hating television evangelist. It was the first time anyone had laid it out so clearly.

Forty-three Years Today

There are advantages of being a fulltime pastor for forty-three years. Then there are the disadvantages. I try as best I can not to dwell on the disadvantages. But the one that did bother me the most, was not being able to answer the questions of children. Adults seldom ask really hard to answer questions, like, What is Gods favorite color? or Are their toys in heaven? or Why is everything that is fun to do a sin? I remember this one well, Why did God choose the Jews instead of us? Forty-three years I have been talking about God, only to learn that I knew very little about Him. This book is The Spirit at work. A Minister who has not read this book is unlearned regardless of their education.
