This is a great book. I have always been interested in "The day the music died" I had read several books and magazine articles about Buddy Holly's life but there was little in the way of the actual Winter Dance Party or the other musicians. I purchased this book and was shocked at how well and detailed the accounts of the musicians lives and the aftermath of the plane crash was. Larry Lehmer did an excelent job and should be commended on telling the truth not just what Buddy Holly's widow wanted or others who are wanting to cover the truth about what life was really like for all those involved. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in rock and roll, Buddy Holly or just 50's style music.

This book is great because it not only tells of the careers of those involved in the Winter Party Tour, but also tells details leading up the crash (including stops in many small towns along the way). It was quite informative.
Buddy Holly is the best known, yet most elusive and enigmatic of all Rock 'n' Roll legends. This man was a genius. The way he constructed his songs was sensational.

The initial first run of this great book was not around very long and people have been begging since for a reprint and here it is! This one is hard to put down, it is intriguing, informative and FACTUAL, which most Buddy book are not (avoid the Amburn book at all costs). What is particularily nice is that it features a great deal of updated info about the last tour & crash, info about Roger Peterson, and a good deal about Ritchie & The Bopper that usually doesn't get included. Lehmer talks to people that were at the shows, helped with the Tour, etc. No wild theories here, just the facts. Top notch in every regard. You see any bad reviews here? 'Nuff said!

Extraordinarily readable and entertaining rock history

Larry Lehmer has crafted one of the better journalistic books about a historical rock 'n' roll event. He brings a newspaperman's observations and senses to the project, which connects all the dots in the tragic last tour for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. "The Day the Music Died" is not only entertaining -- somber and occasionally macabre in appropriate moments, and humorous elsewhere -- but it describes the days and weeks leading up to the tragic crash in Clear Lake through the eyes of people who were there. In each case, he paints a vivid portrait of a fallen star, making their stories all the more tragic. To read this book is to understand how American rock 'n' roll evolved from its early, innocent roots toward the fragmented, even chaotic market it encompasses today. I highyl recommend this book.

Unlike many other books in this genre, I found Dreamcrafting an easy read; great humor, great advice, great logic, and great directions. There is a lot of truth in this book, I think everyone will recognize how simple acheiving their dreams can be--after reading Dreamcrafting, it's only a matter of "DOING". This book is PRACTICAL, INSPIRATIONAL, and easily RECOGNIZABLE. It is PRACTICAL in the sense that there are only 5 macroskills the reader must keep in mind. It is INSPIRATIONAL because, not only have the authors acheived their dreams, but they show how historical figures used these skills to acheive theirs. And finally it is RECOGNIZABLE in the sense that every reader can, and will, either recognize the things that are holding him back from acheiving, or the things that he is already doing right.

Many people go through life with big dreams, but can't seem to get there. Others may have acheived their dreams using these macroskills without ever knowing it, but over time they change, or acheive that one dream and forget how to aspire. This book offers practical advice on how to break habits that are killing your dream, and then how to build new ones that will bring you to where you want to be.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has a dream. This book has helped me to see how I acheived in the past, and how I can continue to acheive in the future.

This book is helping me make my dream come true.

This book works. It is a down to earth guide that has already had an impact on me. I followed the process and found an answer I've always had trouble with...how to fit my dream of starting a business into all the responsibilities I have as the mother of two boys.
What's practical about Dreamcrafting is that being busy is taken into account. Giving gifts to my future self, time relaease motivators, being my own nay sayer...just a few of the really great suggestions. Living with one foot in tomorrow makes so much sense. After reading the book, I realized that I was being hooked to yesterday (fear).
I'm referring this book to friends and by writing this review (a first for me) I guess I'm recommending it to you. Dreamcrafting is easy to read but more importantly really practical and exciting to implement. I've transformed what was a cloudy fantasy into a well defined dream that's on its way to becoming a reality. I'm feeling better about day to day commitments because I've let go of many things that weren't really necessary. And like the book promised, I'm starting to grow by letting go.
Once my dream was focused, the proposed next steps just fell into place. So far so good.

One of the best, if not THE best

I seldom write reviews, but in the case of 'Dreamcrafting' I'm compelled to make an exception. Over the past few years, I've read them all, the classics and the also rans. Without doubt this is a contender for first place in the success-self/help literature stakes. Why? Because the process is demystified, clarified and amplified with NO HYPE AND NO BULL!

At the heart of the book is an explanation of how attitudes towards making dreams come true are conditioned by a severely pessimistic society/culture - how expectations really do influence outcomes. There's also a discussion on how to maintain motivation over the long haul and gaining support from others.

If you're serious about living with passion, this book is not just a must read, it's an essential toolkit. It will show you that whatever your dream, the realisation of the dream is down to developing skillpower, not willpower. An intelligent and perceptive take on the subject and destined to become a classic.

This is one of the best articulations of the inherent problems with modern forms of ecclesiology that I have ever read. Fitch digs very deep in his deconstruction of the 21st century church, and -subject by subject - provides an intelligent, thought-provoking argument of why we should consider getting back to our Christian roots, based on the ancient creeds and practices of the early centuries. All this within the context of a highly technological, ever-changing world... still in need of Christ.

Authentic Church...ohh Yes!

This book rocks! Are you an aspiring pastor, missionary or a person in church leadership? Are you going to church and not feeling that it is satisfying your spiritual longing for depth and relationship? If you fit the above categories, (hint, I think we all do at some time or another) This book is a must read.

David systematically works through the different roles that the church plays in the community and clearly and concisely shows where it is falling short, then proposes ways to change it.

This book is not for the faint of religious heart. If you are looking for a weak and consumer oriented religion this book is not for you. If you are looking for ways to lead yourself, your family, and your church into a deeper relationship with Jesus and his church, read this book.

Heated but Thoughtful

This biting critique of the modern American church has basically lifted the veil off the capitalistic, consumeristic, numbers-oriented megachurches. David Fitch, Pastor of a church just 20 minutes from the headlining, 10,000 member Willow Creek Community Church, levels a pretty harsh attack on the big churches. While there are positive suggestions for alternative church models at the end of every chapter, it's clear that Fitch has a bone to pick.

He goes systematically through the modern church's emphasis on quantifiable success, evangelism, leadership without moral accountability, emotive worship, expository preaching that does not take place in community, justice that is farmed out to parachurch organizations, spiritual formation that is farmed out to psychiatrists, and education of children that is entrusted to an areligious public school system.

For anyone whose lived in the world of the megachurch, this is a really fun read. It's what we whisper about over coffee on the patio when the sermon has taught us 7 steps to better marriages or when the Good Friday service is "exciting" rather than sobering. Fitch has a determined, analytical mind. I hope he writes more.

The downside is that his alternatives sound like an afterthought that do not admit to their own weaknesses. It's very dubious that he's found an alternative to megachurches that is itself without just as many flaws. He's not nuanced enough to suggest that he's offering a cooperative alternative in a megachurch culture. Rather, they're wrong and he's right. Secondly, chapter seven, on spiritual formation, is a bit insensitive. Though he credits this to modern ideologies, it might be his personal style.

But everyone who's interested in the evolution of church culture and the development of new models of community should definitely read this book. Anyone who's either been to or resented the megachurches, everyone whose ever used or disparaged the word emergent, and pretty much anyone else who wants to know where church is going should read Fitch.

An important and badly needed corrective

In his excellent study "The Way of the Modern World," Craig Gay observes that "it seems that the ideas with the most profound consequences are frequently taken for granted. They are the ideas that lie just behind conscious thought, providing a kind of foundation for the deliberations of everyday life." In "The Great Giveaway," Dave Fitch attempts to diagnose and offer correctives to some of the ways in which the evangelical church in North America has come to "take for granted" many of the unconscious assumptions and controlling ideas of secular modernity thus leading it to "give away" being the living Body of Christ in the world. He attempts to uncover the ways in which modern assumptions concerning such things as success, leadership, character formation, and justice have warped our understandings of them as Christians and have lead us to be unfaithful to the Bible and the gospel of Christ. He also attempts show how evangelicals have given away even specific practices of the church such as preaching, worship, and evangelism to the controlling assumptions of modernity, sometimes even when we think we are being the most faithful.

Fitch identifies some of the hallmark characteristics of modernity as being a fascination with technique, a fixation on efficiency and effectiveness, individualism, elevation of experience and self-expression, and an attachment to scientific rationality among other things. Fitch argues that these characteristic assumptions of modernity have infiltrated evangelicalism and have hampered our ability to be faithful to the mission of Christ in the world. For example, he argues that our view of leadership in the church has become more shaped by the CEO model of American business culture than by the teachings of Jesus and the model of the New Testament church. Or again, he argues that our understanding of spiritual formation and personal well-being has been overtaken by the categories of modern psychology.

Fitch is not the first person to express concern about the shape and character of contemporary evangelicalism. Fitch's book differs, however, in the way he uses the insights of post-modern thinkers to expose and undermine the modern assumptions that have shaped the practices and character of contemporary evangelicalism. Many of those who have expressed concern over the state of current evangelicalism have specifically associated some of its negative character traits with post-modernity and have displayed an almost reflexive anti-postmodern attitude. While Fitch does not endorse post-modernism willy-nilly, he sees the insights of post-modern thinkers as a source of help for the church and as a means of deconstructing the pretensions of modernity that hold evangelicalism captive. In some cases this leads directly to controversy, such as Fitch's claim that expository preaching, which for some evangelicals is synonymous with faithfulness to scripture, actually ends up giving away the faithful proclamation of scripture to the forces of modernity while leading us to believe that somehow we are interpreting scripture "objectively" and are therefore protected from error. In other cases, however, I think it clearly makes Fitch's case stronger, such as when he uncovers the interpretive, narrative, non-scientific character of much of modern psychology and shows how it contrasts with the scriptural narrative that should be shaping us as Christians.

Since each chapter of the book deals with a different issue, it is possible to read and benefit from individual chapters without reading the whole book. My guess is that most discerning readers who are alert to the issues and problems of contemporary evangelicalism will find at least one or two chapters they agree with, even if they find themselves in violent disagreement with others. In my opinion, the first, third, and seventh chapters alone make the book worth purchasing. It is also my feeling that reading the whole book will lead to a better overall picture of the state of the contemporary evangelical church and the crisis it faces. If I had any criticism to make of the book it would be that I wish certain parts were better documented, which would make Fitch's overall case even stronger, especially given the controversial nature of some of his claims. Overall, however, I think Fitch strikes a good balance between academic seriousness and accessibility to the layperson. I think he has rightly diagnosed many of the serious problems that currently plague the evangelical church and has offered some helpful suggestions for how we might begin to reclaim being the Body of Christ again in North America. I think this book is must reading for anyone seriously concerned about the faithfulness of the church in our times.

Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Fitch's overall intention in the book is to show how modernity has transformed clear gospel teaching into modernistic trends, he does this by looking at eight areas including success, evangelism, leadership, the production of experience, preaching, justice, spiritual formation, and moral education. Then the "task" of the book is to (1) examine the ways we have "given away" being the church to modernity by allowing its influence to individualize, universalize, syncretize, and commodify the tasks, truths, and even the very salvation we have been given as a people from god through Jesus Christ, and (2) to offer practices to evangelicals by which we may receive back being the church, the people of God ruled by Jesus as Lord in resistance to such modern influences.

List strengths of book.
With each of the eight areas of discussion there are clear strengths to be found in the explanation and solutions offered, however the strongest areas of the book include the chapters dealing with success, evangelism and spiritual formation. With the topic of success, Fitch contends that we measure success by size because we have accepted the modern values of individualism and efficiency. Instead, success should be measured by measuring faithfulness rather than size. With the topic of evangelism he states that we rely on arguments, presentations, and proofs in our Gospel presentations, rather than embodying the reality of Jesus Christ being lived within our churches. And with spiritual formation we have accepted therapy and psychology, and in many cases have substituted these for the biblical practices of confession, repentance, and speaking the truth in love in the context of community. Additionally, the book includes over thirty pages of excellent notes for further study and reflection.

List weaknesses of book.
While I believe there will be more than a few people who believe Fitch's assessment is incorrect because they find it difficult to see beyond a modern perspective, I find very little not to like about this book.

Devotional Time with my Young Daughters

This book was just precious! My two daughters, one 8 years old and the other 12 years old, love to have devotional times with me. We are always looking for just the right devotional books as we study God's word. Of course, kids love to read about other real live kids and so this book was perfect for us. We would read the stories of Michelle Adams and her girls and just belly laugh at times. It would always jog my memory of the silly things my girls did and I would proceed to tell them about it. They loved hearing about what they did as a little toddler and what God taught me in those times. We truly have our own "Little Lessons from a Big God" stored away in our hearts and minds.
We would then read the scriptures that were listed at the end of the chapter and study His word together and pray. My girls would always plead with me, "Just one more story about Abby, Ali and their dogs!! Just one more chapter, Mom!" Of course, I too wanted to read just "one more" chapter! We would stop there because I told them it's like having that big bag of candy from Halloween and we didn't want to eat it all up in one day. Let's savor it and enjoy it longer! That was the only way I could convince them that we should save the book for another day.

Experiencing God in the Small Things

For many people today, God does not factor into their lives. For many others, God may be big and he may be evident in the big things. But He is ultimately uninterested in little things that make up their lives. In Little Lessons From a Big God, Michelle Adams shares stories and experiences from her own life which illustrate how close and interested in each of us God really is. Her engaging, conversational style is both inviting and disarming. Each account unfolds like being in Adams' kitchen, seated at the table, sipping a soda and listening as she shares the stories of the lessons God has taught her through her children.

Whether it was learning to know God's voice, learning to accept responsibility for actions and their consequences, or to simply enjoy being with God, each event is retold with humor and insight. In her very personal style, Adams conveys to the reader one primary truth: No matter how big God truly is, His presence is most often experienced in the small things.

I was completely inspired.....

I thought this book was OK. The article contributors could certainly write well, so I can't be fair and still give it 3 stars. However, I was hoping to find a book between the covers of this "thing." I think if the authors, two sisters and another woman, had read the articles included in this book and used them as research for writing a book, then they could have written a wonderful book. Unfortunately, there was too much overlap on some issues and some holes on others. There certainly is no overall thesis to the book that is explained and proven by the writing.

The authors are veteran network marketers who have teamed up together to form a trade association they call "Direct Selling Women's Alliance" (DSWA dot org). The book is clearly a marketing piece they have thrown together in order to promote their organization. Apparently it has worked well because I suspect the membership in their organization has showered it with favorable book reviews on Amazon. I cannot think of any other possible explanation for its overall 5-star rating from 10 reviewers.

The network marketing industry is full of home-based entrepreneurs. The people who succeed at networking marketing can (1) sell product, (2) recruit salespeople to join THEIR sales organization, (3) lead the sales organization they build, and (4) manage THEIR sales organization. I had hoped this book would have explained this in some detail. Instead, all of this was touched upon, but not clearly. Also, there was too much inspirational fluff included.

There are four books that I think would serve the reader well if they are interested in becoming successful at direct sales:

>>Make Your Contacts Count (ISBN: 0814474020)
>>Leadership Made Easy (ISBN: 1932531599)
>>The Road Warrior's Guide to Sales Management (ISBN: 1592981992)
>>What to Do When You Become the Boss (ISBN: 1432714287)

When you work in direct sales the company you work for has outsourced its sales function. That is why you can earn what you earn. If you build a sales team to work for you, then you will be successful. It's just that simple. 4 stars!

We had the pleasure of meeting Monroe on a recent vacation, and knew we had to read his book after hearing him talk about some of his adventures. The tales are exciting and interesting--if one can get past the incredible grammatical and spelling errors throughout the book. The editing is positively nonexistent. In fact, it reads as though Monroe printed up his travel notes without even rereading them! I don't know who "Big Top Publishing" is, but their reputation is on the line with this one.

Really great and interesting adventure stories !!!

Monroe keeps you at the edge of your seat as he valiantly tramps the Globe. He is allowed access to the places most journalists are not and uses that privilage to report the sublime and the bizzare. All the people are real the places are fantastic and the adventures are mind-blowing.Monroe is the "real deal" If you have any curiosity about the world NOT seen from a cruise ship,BUY THIS BOOK! His advice to my thirteen year old daughter at a recent book signing,"Quit school now while you have the chance.See the world. If I'd known what was out there at your age I wouldn't have wasted so much precious time."Go to Monroe's website, look for him in your area, look out for his next book.

I had listened to Julian Monroe Fisher's weekly radio show called 'Monroe's Talkabout the World' on The JohnBoy and Billy Radio Network for the last several years. I had also kept up with Mr. Fisher's travels through his Internet website editions.... And although his radio show and website are excellent, his new book is absolutely fabulous. It takes the reader to some of the most exotic locations on the planet with stories that are so exciting that it's hard to put the book down. And it's all about stuff that really happened. I especially liked the story entitled 'Travels with Roy Smith' about Mr. Fisher's adventures in Belize. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring the world at large!!

Really Great and interesting stories !!

I had been looking for a resource to add to our homeschool curriculum that would follow the liturgical year. We have enjoyed many of the simple enriching activities while learning more about saints/important people and our faith.

Well organized

I bought this book because I like it when our family has some sort of Catholic faith item to discuss at dinner. We were using 365 days of Saints and talking about the saint for that day, but this book is so well organized that I can look up new facts and traditions to bring to our life. I have two older children and two babies, so this book is great for all. I'm just a mom, so probably won't do the little book projects etc, but glad to have them for a reference. I like the organization by season and liturgical year and that there is something for every month.

I love this book. It is very helpful in teaching my child about the Faith, Traditions, and Sacraments of the Catholic Church. The book also is divided into great sections based on the Saints, Sacraments, Feast Days and Holy Days. They also break the book down into months of the year to develope awareness of the events and signifigance of each month. The reading materials and activities are great!

A learning experience for the whole family

This was a great book and it gave me a great "plan" to follow in educating my children about the catholic faith and it also provided great ideas on family projects that we could do to celebrate and understand the deeper meaning of many catholic customs and traditions.

I just love this book. The first great thing is that it is spiral bound so you can leave it open to the recipe while you make it. There are hundreds of recipes for juices, smoothies, frozen fruit slushes, fizzy quenchers and even some fruit infused teas. Every drink has a side bar on the things it is good for ie: detox, energy etc. and in the back it lists various ailments and which drinks are good for them.On top of this all the drinks I have tried so far have been wonderful. I am very pleased with this book.

I love the way this book is organized. I got this book as I am new to juicing! I love how its organized by what ingredients you need. Also is very helpful on what the drink is good for (ex.immunity). I have loved all the recipes so far. Also informative- who would have thought you can't juice a banana!

I love this book! I'm new to juicing and some things I didn't think I could handle drinking, but the author did a good job making everything sound so yummy! I really love how she organized the fruits. It's nice to go into my kitchen and see that I have a pineapple I need to use and then have several recipes to go with it. My husband is most likely thinking it's going to end up on the shelf untouched like the rest, but I think this is definately a keeper :)

Great Layout !

Great layout, great pictures, and great information! This book has a nice selection of fruit drinks and vegetable drinks as well. Each drink has a 5 section, 5 star rating. There is a spot on nutrition so you know the vitamins and minerals you are getting. A great book to keep you healthy!

Is a lifesaver. From getting so overwhelmed with the exotic concoctions in the juice/smoothie books which sit on my shelf, I happened to pick this one up at the local juice bar. The girl there apologetically said it wasn't for sale, but from what I read whilst standing there, I have to say I have never had a book impress me so much in so few seconds. I ordered one, and the rest is history.
1. Brilliant,logical layout
2. Non overwhelming recipes (for those of us who don't want to live in the kitchen)
3. Surprisingly informative, from the basic fruit/ veg nutritional facts at the start to the 1 to 5 star rating after each recipe. Brilliant.
I love this book. It is my favourite, and as a raw foodist, I have stacks of books.
If you buy it, you'll see what I mean.
