I read the hardcopy of this novel and really enjoyed the breakneck pace and huge twists! I am an avid reader of James Rollins and do not find this to be similar to his works at all. A new voice in the market is great to find and James K Rollins fits the bill. Read with an open mind and don't try to pigeon hole this author - he has original ideas that are fun to read! Get ready for a wild ride.

I've been waiting for this one since I saw threads on the Internet about it. A Celtic/Druidess heroine, Indigo kids with super powers, and evil Neo-Nazi conspiracy that goes back to WWII, and a team of special ops agents with a wide range of talents and colorful personalities. And the mystery of the Voynich manuscript. If you don't know what it is just google it and tons of pages will come up.
I loved the nononsense female heroine and the quips she exchanges with the hero.
If you want a fast ride with a splash of fancinating history and a killer third act you'll like this one.
I also recommend Maxumum Ride by Patterson and Steve Berry has a new thriller coming out in late December, too.
I read the paper back version below.

This hack is not NY Times bestselling author James Rollins. The "K" in James K. Rollins must stand for "knave" - a tricky, deceitful person. He has blatantly ripped off James Rollins' Sigma series books and apparently self-published an e-book. Beware, people.

the book is a poor attempt at copying james rollins style of writing. the author not only borrowed rollins name but also his type of story/i.e. omega force as opposed to sigma force/. all said the book is not well written and the author would benifit greatly from a course in writing.

Who is the target market?

The content looks okay and the book may be great but I would never buy this book[s] for my teen and pre-teen boys. They would immediately dismiss it because of the lame title and perky cover. Who is the target market? Teens that are stressed out but perky and into bright colored and tasty titled literature or actual teens of the 21st century? It may have appealed to me as a teen 40 years ago on a sheltered mid-west farm where all my classmates were white church[christian]-goers, but my kids are growing up in an urban, multi-cultural, you-tubed, on-line gaming, they know more of reality than most adults because the internet opens the world up to them 24/7 AND they've come of age under the Bush administration where lying and torture and creating/spinning your own reality 'with God on our side' is the 'American Way'. I remind my 15 y/o frequently to not write off America based on the last 8 years - it has always had its flaws but was better before the election of 2000 and will be better again. I know I got off track from the book but it all relates to the fact that this book's title and cover aren't in tune with 21st century teens.

Absolutely worth exploring by teens, as they can relate to the teen stories...

This book is part of the 'Taste Berries for Teens' series (with contributions by teens) by a mother & daughter team. Out of the whole lot, I have hand-picked two titles which interest me. This is one of them & the other is about goal setting.

From the stress management standpoint, this book stands up to its title. It is packed with terrific (& time tested) intervention & prevention strategies to minimise stress & stay cool under pressure.

The chapters are interspersed with many inspiring teen stories, which teen readers can quickly relate to. This is where my only 'adverse' complaint about the book sets in. The stories are really too much a hassle for me to read/digest as I generally don't like story-telling. Personally, I feel that authors could easily have toned down the stories to a more concise & crisp level.

Nevertheless, I like the authors' closing epilogue for teen readers. To recap: "...In short, growing up is about taking responsibility for yourself. Taking responsibility means you think about your life, who you are, & how you would like to shape your life - to become the person you'd truly like to see. As you go about doing that, as you get even more busy & involved with your life, you're going to experience stress. But you can be cool to cope.
Throughout this book, you've been reading about a number of skills & techniques that you can use to reduce stress, strains & pressures of life, & learning how you can change undersired behaviours & adapt new ones. As with anything, these skills must be incorporated into your lifestyle; you have to practise daily.
You can do it. It's up to you!"

With that, I conclude this review with a rating of 4, although it probably deserves a rating of 5, if not for my 'adverse' complaint.

I haven't completely finished reading this book, but so far, I've loved it. It really helps. Sometimes when your so stressed, that it feels like a a car is sitting on top of you, it helps to hear stories of other kids who've had similair stressful experiences or days that were so full of stress, that the day was totally shot. There are also quotes and places to write down your own personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences with stress. One section like this looks like this:

What makes my like stressful is......

-------------------------------------

-------------------------------------

-------------------------------------

There were also checklists and symptom lists for you to check off to help you understand how your body tells you that you're under stress. I think this was one of my favorite features(all of the writing parts I mean)but I also really enjoyed the chapter that broke down the sides and phaes of stress. For those of you out there staring final exams or midterms in the face or really any teenager facing stress, I HIGHLY reccommend this book.

A Taste-Berry Teen's Guide to Managing the Stress and Pressures of Life by Bettie B. Youngs is such a good book for teens that are going through peer pressure or just have so much stress on there shoulders. It has true and realistic stories that teen readers can relate to. By reading the stories the teen readers will learn how to do deal with some of the common cases of stress and pressures. Adults just don't understand what kids are going through now a days and this book helps the kids deal with there problems without getting information from there parents. This book is reccomended to every teen in the world! Youngs wrote this book to make sure that teens understand themselves and understand that stress and pressure is what everyone is going through. It is okay. REad this book and you will be trapped in a bubble of ease.

I actually found the quide quite useful, with a lot of specific information that you can't find in the local visitor center (which I am quite familiar with). It can be a little bit dated (not to mention esoteric) but it is the quintessential guide to Whatcom County.

I think this is a great guide to have. Even seasoned whatcom county residents can find something new in this guide. There is something for everyone in this book.

I really like the format with each review giving and address, features, directions and hours if appropriate. It would be nice for the outdoor trail reviews to include a small map with the directions. The directions are good enough to get you there though.

Each review also has a full page description with great insite into what you will find on the trail, in the gallery, what the food is like, the atmosphere....

I bought this book to read to my children, ages 6 and 3. I assumed that it would be written on a child's level because it is illustrated and sold as a child's book. My children lost interest by the middle of the book. I lost interest. This book was preachy, not charming. It seems written more to the adult who is reading it then to the child it should be reaching.

This book makes me cry!

Our son's school lent this book to us after our dog was killed. This book, in addition to "Dog Heaven" helped us to discuss sadness with our son.

I would agree that this is not the most engaging book. I changed the name of the girl and our son identified the rabbit in the illustration as a dog (our dog had the same color combination.)

I think for a subject like sadness kids really respond to something simple, and even a little "preachy". This may not be a very entertaining book for adults, but our boy asked for it every night for the first two weeks after our dog was killed.

A great way to open the discussion about feelings.

This books teaches about the many reasons why kids sometimes feel sad, such as leaving some place where they are having fun, or mourning a pet's death. Then it shows some ways to feel better, such talking with others or getting involved in another activity. The book emphasizes that it is okay to be sad, but there are ways of feeling better when we are ready.

I bought this book when I went through my "trying-to-find-myself" stage at the age of twelve. I thought it was really good. I had bought many similiar books like it. Though it was this journal that I always seemed to return to. The other day I found it. I was amazed at how childish and different my answers would be to the questions now. I wanted to erase my old answers but I thought twice about it and just bought another one. I really enjoy this book. My only caution is, do not buy for a preteen. It is written for a true teen.

Interesting characters but not well developed. A few episodes in the book were humourous but overall the plot is too far fetched and not tied together well. It is a big leap from middle age crisis to a resolution involving nuclear weapons in rural Alabama. If you are interested in a look at 50-60 year old men's view of their impending uselessness and one man's resolution of this it can be interesting. Basicly he decides that his family will take care of him in the end but in the mean time he can be lethal and aggressive when he needs to be.

Worth killing by Roger Cain was an interesting read. I am from the country he writes about and Cain took me there, from being lost in a cold, wet cave in Alabama to shooting quail in north Mississippi. Cain puts a paranoid edge on the tension many families feel between "I love you" and "Can I trust you?" His scenario of a suitcase nuke coming over the southern border is frightening in light of our times and (I hope) over the top in the facility with which the bad guys do it. Makes you think.

Worth "reading"

Just finished Roger Cain's "Worth Killing". Kept my interest on more than one level. For those of us who are fathers and granddaddies, it connects on a level that gets "very personal " when someone starts "messin' with my family", and also with the current controversy over illegal immigration, the question is re-framed in a most intriguing manner. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire plot unfold, and found it hard to put the book down. I am looking forward to Mr. Cain's next offering!

I agree with the first reviewer; it's a very uneven collection. There are many promising premises; one begins "Among the novels I will never write..."And there are some wonderful prose poems, such as "Pretense," which are more or less in the manner of Barthelme (and, more distantly, in the manner of Borges (or, although this a long shot, in the manner of Lem (or, ultimately, even more distantly still, but really more plausibly, in the manner of Kafka's one-page stories))).

A good if inconsistent work

Aside from a small publishing blunder (the first 30 pages of my copy of The Dictionary of Modern Anguish were out of order), this is a compelling book of short fictions. Definately not your momma's stories. Most of them masquerade as reviews of films that have never been made or books that have never been written. Berry, at his best, wraps an excellent story around literary theory to create a nice pill that's easy to swallow. "A Theory of Fiction," "Torture!" and "Knott Unbound" stand out in this regard. Some of the stories are uneven, however, failing to satisfactorily mix intelligent discourse with an experimental impulse. So when Berry is good, he's very good. When he's not, he's just okay. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in American experimental fiction, critifiction, or needs the number for professional justifications (paid advertisement, page 130).

These are actually books 2 and 3 of a series. The first book is called "Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg" and includes all the Disney fairies teamed up in a "Final Fantasy" video-game like quest.
"The Trouble With Tink" is a well written story and is a good sequel to "Fairy Dust". I recommend it highly.
"Beck and the Great Berry Battle", on the other hand, is disappointing because Beck is not really given a chance by the author to do anything but watch events taking place. I do not recommend it.

Probably way more enjoyable for the kids. ;)

We bought this for a trip, and the first one was well read. The second one, however, was starting to get on my nerves (I think the reader pulled out every accent she could think of), but my patience may not have been at its highest, either. ;) They've created an interesting world. The stories were ok, though in the first, the moral seems to be - have a problem, better not tell anyone, and better not ask for help! Seemed a bit odd.

From Island Press in 1993, this collection of essays lacks the insight and inspiration needed to jolt a new generation of environmental leaders. Emphasis in this book is on vague "environmental leadership" rather than leadership skills that can boost the laggard enviro-nonprofit sector to look for opportunites to impliment innovation and reinvent itself to create true social, economic, and environmental change. The essaysist here tend to come out of conservation science and the product is thus technical in nature and content. I fear the tendency for budding enviro-leaders would be to come directly to this text but there is much more for them in the general nonprofit sector leadership books from Drucker, Nanus/Dobbs, et al. I respect Island Press and hope that it will produce the text that will truely inform and inspire that new generation of leaders. Island is the one that is wise enough to do it right next time.

I agree with the first reviewer. The book is disappointingly short. However, and it's a big however, I also agree that books about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are lacking for a younger age group. This also turned out to be an ideal book (because it's short) for my new kindergartner to take to school and tell the teachers and kids about this jewish holiday. The teacher said: "I was surprised at how interested all the kids were" (go figure!). And on RH, my daughter brought in a bag of apple slices, honey, and a homemade round challah for the kids' snack time.

This book is a great idea but a disappointment. I was disappointed by the shortness and the lack of story line. The illustrations are realistic however, don't look at them too long because you will discover that everyone has some sort of grotesque facial distortion.

I've given it 3 stars because it is one of the few books in this category and I believe we need to support this genre.
