This book gives you information that few other books do. Description of campgrounds, best places to eat, shopping, wildlife viewing, scenic drives, etc. You also don't have to buy several books to visit this area. This one book will cover the whole area.

LOTS of info--maybe too much

I like Joy Berry's work, because as a foster, adoptive, and birth mother I work with kids with LOTS of different issues. Many of her books in the "Let's Talk About" series are quite good, and have changed our lives by changing our children's. However, this book is in a different format which is not as easy to read and which presents a great deal of information on each page. It is, nevertheless, quite good--but not one that children will read independently for pleasure.

Cookbook with Large Variety
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This is a wonderful cookbook with a large variety. It covers all berries - from the standard straw, boysen, and black, to the harder to find goose, lingon, and loganberries. It is sectioned out by drinks, main meals, desserts, and preserves. The beginning has a description of the different berries and gives advice on preserving them.

As a Pacific Northwest Native, I found this to be a Kitchen Must-Have.

My daughter got these from her grandparents for Christmas, she picked them out and it was hard to find them until we looked on amazon. Yeah amazon! We love this site and she loves the books! She carries them everywhere with her. She is in first grade so some of the words are hard for her but I love to read them to her and she helps out. Great Book!

As a librarian, I am always looking for great craft books that will appeal to children and their parents. This one is so captivating that I bought a copy for my niece! The instructions and illustrations are clear, and there are a variety of projects to choose from. Some projects require more adult supervision that others, and some require extensive preparation or effort. However, curious elementary students will hardly be able to wait to try these ideas. Because only ideas and instructions are given, rather than patterns and specifics, the results will be sure to reflect the individuality and creativity of the child doing the project.

What Women Want

is to see movies that are romantic, feature Mr. Right and have a Happy Ending (at least most of the time). This guide discusses over 600 films almost from the beginning of movie making that are thought to appeal specifically but not only to women. Usually the term "chick flick" is used in a derogatory fashion to describe a movie that you can get your man to watch only reluctantly.
The two authors of this book are both film critics, but they take a rather light-hearted and playful look at many different kinds of movies that in one way or other focus on female issues. I especially liked the chapter on the early Screwball comedies, usually with a strong female lead. The book covers everything from all time classics like "Gone With the Wind", successful adaptations of novels like "Emma", dance movies (the unforgettable "Dirty Dancing") and female "Buddy" movies like "Thelma and Louise" and also analyses trends like "the Siren", "Working Women" and female action heroines (ground-breaking in this respect Sg. Ripley in Alien, not surprisingly most men hate Weaver in this role).
The movies are discussed in terms of their appeal to a female audience and how many tissues one approximately should have ready when watching them. Although the focus is not primarily on the artistic merit of the individual movies, the authors indicate whether they consider a film great or fit only for the bin.
This guide will help you select great movies for your next all girls night and maybe also have you renting an old movie of which you hadn't thought before. It is fun and witty and also supplies a wealth of background info on many actors but if you are looking for some serious feminist film criticism, then this book isn't for you.

Take a lesson from Africa

This informative book really opened my mind about child-rearing practices. It's so important to remember that Western culture is not the only one in the world and that we would do well to learn what other cultures have to offer us. Gusii parents in Kenya use what the authors call a "pediatric" way of raising children, contrasted to the "pedagogical" way Western parents tend to raise children. Many of the Gusii practices, which are generally concerned with protecting the comfort and health of the child, could be used by American parents beneficially.

I especially liked the vignettes of the families towards the end of the book.

This book is more appropriate for the person who is academically interested in the subject - it's not really soemthing the average person would sit down with for a good read.

VERY USEFUL STUDY OF CHILDREN
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-31
In this excellent book, Berry Mayall describes children as a specific social group. They should not be seen as mini-adults, or as proto-adults. As a social group, they have specific relationships with other social groups, particularly with parents and teachers. She shows that children are agents, partners in constructing the social world that we all share. They are not just passive consumers of scarce social resources.

In fact though, they do receive inadequate support for their development. Resources for childrens health are poor, and so are the resources for childrens education. For instance, 94% of primary schools have no gym, 92% have no swimming pool, and 97% have no tennis courts. One in five children are brought up in families who live in poverty, and economic and social inequality blight the lives of all too many children.
