The reason I got a set of this fairy tale book is because she likes Strawberry Shortcake, she has a lot of the books and Cd's. This is a good way of introducing her to the fairy tale stories which she likes anyway.

So cute!

The Bowlegged Rooster and other tales that signify

Review Date: 2001-04-09
By tales that signify, Thomas means stories where animals take the place of humans, acting just as silly, proud, happy, and just plain human. These five rooster tales are about major life events-birth, "The Bowlegged Rooster," death, "Grandpa Goose's Funeral," self-acceptance, "The Bald-Headed Buzzard," marriage, "Crow Jumps the Broom," and a major holiday, "Christmas in the Barnyard." Each of the events is treated in a light hearted manner, emphasizing the fussing, bragging, and strutting that people so often do. Children will love the way baby rooster simplifies things for the grownups sometimes, and follows in his daddy's footsteps. Thomas' text is sing-songy, repetitive, but somehow poetic and certainly humorous. Good, funny book for second and third grade readers. Should also make a good read-aloud.

The funniest book I ever read!

Good design and writing make this fun even for casual reader

Review Date: 2004-10-11
I stopped subscribing to a daily newspaper nearly ten years ago, and if it weren't for the ubiquitous copies of USA TODAY shoved under hotel room doors, my direct experience with contemporary papers would be limited for the most part to leave-behinds on subways and airplane seat pockets. True, I shove coins in the corner box when confronted by a major headline event, but the web is ever beckoning.

That's why I'm surprised how much I enjoyed CONTEMPORARY NEWSPAPER DESIGN. I've long been familiar with John D. Berry's writing on type, of course, but to see him focused on (ahem) yesterday's news didn't at first appeal. But then I took a closer look. Beginning with his insightful initial essay linking technology, economics, and the different needs of commuter train and subway car readers to the practical decisions of design and type, he goes on to illustrate his themes through well-chosen pages from papers around the world, from the most formal to the rawest tabloids, accompanied by a series of thoughtful, insightful, well-written essays from leading practitioners.

While this book is rich enough for the more knowledgeable and demanding reader, it's accessible and interesting enough for those of us with a more casual relationship to the daily newspaper. I hadn't expected it, but I ended up agreeing with Berry's conclusion, that "those who think carefully about the best ways to give us our news, and the entertainment and punditry and advertising that go with it, will do us a service and will probably be in demand for a long time to come."

Excellent Resource for Newspaper Layout

This book has an answer to every question! Please be aware that even though tomatoes are fruits, they are not covered in this book but she does cover them in her veggie book. I have both and would highly recommend them to any gardener of all levels. I am probably somewhere in the middle and I love her writing style...so easy to understand and doesn't make you feel stupid. Easy categories and clear index make it easy to refer back and forth.

I am sick and tired of hearing that hitler loved animals and was a vegetarian- neither fact is in evidence, and is argued well in this book- it deserves a space on the shelf-

The book makes short shrift of the old characterization of Hitler as a vegetarian. I first had doubts about this point after watching Triumph of the Will. In that film, Hitler and all of his minions were pudgy and sweaty, tell-tale signs of carnivorousness dining habits. Meat eaters generally appear unhealthy and their midsections look as though someone stuffed a dodge ball down their shirts. The author draws from multiple sources to prove that Hitler had vegetarian phases in which he gave up meat in order to gain a little relief from flatulence and profuse sweating before proving that he had no convictions beyond this. In addition to favoring liver dumplings and squab, he was partial to stamping out vegetarian organizations in occupied countries of Europe.

I dinged the author a star on his slight tangent on whether Christ was a vegetarian or not. Vegetarians sometimes go to extremes in defending a healthy and humane diet. This includes torturous turns of reasoning to make Christ into a vegetarian even though he himself gave fish to the hungry. (American fundies do the same thing when trying to reconcile Christ's creation of wine from water as well as his use of wine at the Last Supper.) Being the Son of God, he could have summoned delicious tempeh dishes, but he didn't. It's unlikely that there were many Semites of classical antiquity who would have practiced vegetarianism. Even John the Baptist ate locusts for protein despite his extreme asceticism.

Sarah Weeks presents the reader with a young pig that is absolutely overjoyed to be a pig. The reader follows the young pig as it shows off all the fun pig activities it can do including sniffing out truffles near the Eiffel Tower, rolling around in the mud in a swanky Roman bath and oinking at the moon. This uplifting story stresses esteem and ability. Repetitive and rhythmic, the story never becomes redundant. In addition to tying in perfectly with the text, Holly Berry's illustrations will enhance the read-aloud experience for many young preschool audiences through the power of their many cute and delightful details. A definite must for pig lovers young and old alike.

My two year old received this book as a gift and loves it. The text is quick and light for on-the-go toddlers and the illustrations are wonderfully detailed and comical. My daughter points out objects from the multiple scenes (beach, Irish countryside, truffle hunting), so it's an opportunity to interact and learn. It's a playful, joyful book with a wonderful underlying message about self-esteem.

Ok. Don't laugh. This was one of the best books I have ever read. Granted, I read this book during a time in my laugh where I needed to hear some "woman-power" words. Dr. Berry *wowed* me with her insight into womanhood and society issues.

I loved her writing style. She was so funny and equally...so deep and perplexing. AFter reading this book I felt like I wish I could sit down and have a long chat with Dr. Berry.

She talks about Alice Walker in the book and quotes her as saying "sometimes even greif becomes absurb and that's when laughter gushes up to retreive the sanity". Wow.

I loved her insights on being beautiful. She says that she made herself the measure of beauty and suddenly everyone around her paled in comparison...Woman Power!

I loved this book and I have recommended it to everyone I know. It was recommended to me by a WHITE MAN! Nevertheless...it is a must read.

This is the best book I've read this year. Dr. Berry gave a real insight to the 'black experience' . I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at a conference a couple of days ago and she is one of the most marvelous people that I have heard. Her words go far beyond that of John Grisham, or Stephen King. She is truly an inspirational person. I can't wait to read her other books

The topic of this book is the economic cycle called the long wave or Kondratiev cycle. The Russian economist Kondratiev did not discover these cycles, but he was the first to study them in detail. Long waves may be responsible for various long term trends: the slow down in productivity growth and wages after 1973, the "Reagan revolution", Toynbee's cycles of War and Peace, stock cycles (my focus) and others. This is the reason why people study them. The idea that long waves are major factors in these trends (or that they are even relevant at all) is controversial. Berry's book represents a modern day treatment of this topic.

I bought this book when I was researching the Kondratiev cycle as a possible explanation for stock market cycles (see my book Stock Cycles for more information). Berry presents an excellent overview of the longwaves literature in a single moderately-priced volume, and it is an excellent place to start a serious study of long waves. What I really liked about the book was the strongly empirical flavor where historical inflation and GDP data were smoothed and plotted in various ways that really "bring the cycles out". The focus is on letting the data "tell their own story", which was most refreshing in my opinion.

A compelling examination of the long wave...

Berry examines the factors associated with the long wave (Kondratiev Wave) and its sub-wave cousin the Kuznets Cycle as they affect the growth of city-building and overall economic growth and decline in the U.S. since the beginning of the republic.

According to Berry, the "stagflation peak" of 1981 will eventually give way to a recession/depression trough sometime between 2006-12. Contrary to the otherworldly optimism and manic expectations of Wall Street and the American public at large, Berry expects a deflationary cycle to begin at any time (March 1998), resulting in mass restructuring and dislocation that will require most of the next decade to resolve.

Following the trough around 2010, however, Berry expects the K-Wave and Kuznets cycles to resume their growth period, which is expected to rise into the growth period peak in the early 2030s.

In the context of A. Gary Shilling's "Deflation...", one would be wise to seriously consider reallocating his or her investment portfolio to perpare for a severe decline in stock prices (50% or more by 2002), in order to avoid the serious losses associated with the Kuznets deceleration wave and the collapse portion of the K-Wave. Bonds will be an attractive alternative to stocks following the panic and collapse phase, as interest rates will dramatically fall as will consumer prices throughout the next decade.
