Wagner wanted to write music for the revolution. Mark Berry reminds us of this in an exciting new book that catapults us back to the heady turmoil of nineteenth-century political thought. Wagner was using the ancient myth of the Ring to dramatise the struggle of deadening powers of technology, economics, law and bourgeois morality with the eternal human spirit of freedom and love. Mark Berry's treatment of this shows he is the most important new person writing today about Wagner. Anyone wanting to think seriously about Wagner and his milieu must read Berry's important new book.

A Child Should Turn off the Lights when he Leaves the Room
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-01
This is one of Joy Berry's "Survival Series for Kids" books and I have to confess that my son Devon and I like them all. I've had them in storage for years, way before Devon was a twinkle in my eye, or my gal Sara's, and I'm glad I saved them.

In this book Ms. Berry and illustrator Bartholomew, with your help, will teach your child about why he or she should turn off the lights when they leave the room. Your child will learn a little about conservation and why it's important and let me tell you in these days of rising gas prices, electric bills, water bills and heating bills you can't get your child thinking about using less soon enough. Less can be good. Sara and I want our son Devon to grow up appreciating our green world, not abusing and using it, especially not needlessly. Wasting is bad and a child cannot learn that early enough. Yes this is a book for a child bigger that a toddler, however my toddler and I like it just fine. Get 'em started early, that's my motto.

Though this book was written over twenty years ago, it still stands up. The excellent comic book type illustrations will keep your child interested as you read along with him or her. And for the life of me I don't know why these books are not easier to get. Joy Berry is good for children, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. If you can get a hold of her books and share them with your child, you'll both be better for it.

Iris Berry Changed My Life

Read "Two Blocks East of Vine", when you are through, re- read it and then read it some more.

Iris Berry's poetry is like a beautiful film noir.

Iris Berry has touched my life.

Iris Berry doesn't know me nor do I know her, but she knew a friend of mine. Iris wrote a poem called BAD BLOOD AND BITTERSWEETS and that poem changed the world I live in. She gave me clarity and hope, she let me know I wasn't alone nor was I the only one ever having felt this way. Iris if you read this I just wish to say thank you, your poetry is inspirational and loving. I lalso learned to avoid King Ratsass-
Thank you again for changing my life.

Yet another chestnut!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-05
This small book is a must if you love Berry. The first tale describes a day of work in a tobacco patch for Berry's hard working farmer, Elton Penn. I like to imagine my great grandfather being like Elton, so full of grace and honesty.

Wheeler Catlett is the star of the second story, and you see this beautiful man driving in a way that nearly ignores the modern highway that is written so nastily across the farmlands. The story is funny and moving to its final sentence.

While equation heavy at times, after reading this book one gains a great deal of understanding as to the weaknesses/boundary conditions for inference of OLS regression. For those with little understanding of the basic mechanics of regression, this is NOT a good starting place, but those with some working knowledge this book is invaluable.

A LIFESAVER
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-10
I am a journalist so I received an advanced copy of this book to review. I have a two year old and a newborn so I assumed "sibling rivalry" was years away. But when my two-year old started acting out (blatantly disobeying, throwing tantrums over apparently nothing), I turned to this book. There is an indepth section on what happens when a new baby enters the scene that has been a godsend. It has been such a relief to know that my older daughter's behavior is not just common, it's to be expected. This book has made understanding and dealing with her tantrums and defiance much easier. I feel confident that if and when the REAL rivalry begins I will be equipped to handle it in a loving and nurturing way.

Every patriot should buy this book

Every patriot should buy this book if they want to find out how their soldiers, the front line troops defending freedom world wide, are doing in the war against terrorism. No longer, since 9/11, can any American say that they don't care about what is happening elsewhere, since elsewhere has now invaded US soil. Get to find out what your army is doing on your behalf - a semi-official place like this is a good place to start. A Celebration of Farming & An Indictment of Mass Machine Culture
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-06
From back cover:

"This book is about culture in the deep, ripe sense; a nurturing habitat. Our habitat is the planet in all its local specifics. This has meant, for most people, for centuries, "the farm." The farm not only grows food, it nourishes human character, is a challenge and a teacher, a source of insight and values. With unwavering focus, Wendell Berry shows what we lost of our real human American potential when we lost our commitment to living well, in place, on the land. "An infinitely greedy sovereign is afoot in the universe, staking his claims."

What's left, then, is the future -- a future of declining agribusiness and a necessary return to good farming. Wendell knows from his own life that this work, though not easy, need not dismay us: in the right spirit it is mankind's "right livelihood" -- and a delight. "The preserver of abundance is excellence." - Gary Snyder

If you are interested in the development of R&B in New Orleans, then this is the book to buy. All the essential contributors are there. What I really liked was the space given to the Mardi Gras Indians.
