Lists whether or not a company offers telecommuting!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-04-10
As the manager of the Telecommuting site at The Mining Co., I'm always interested in whether companies are offering telecommuting to their employees. The quality resources with this information are extremely rare. This book has that information and more! Which companies offer personal time in addition to sick and vacation time? The answers are here.

The San Jose Mercury News has compiled information from 500 of the top technology companies and what they have to offer an employee. Even if you don't go to work for any of these companies, the book provides the employee with comparative information on what other companies are offering their employees for recruiting and retention.

One company sent their entire staff to Hawaii for 3 days! Wouldn't you like to know that information before starting to work for a company?

This book's a winner for Silicon Valley, all employees looking to better their work situation and the San Jose Mercury News.

I only hope they offer a new one each year!

"Haiku" Is a Delight!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-07
My children (ages 6 and 8) really enjoyed the book "Haiku on My Shoe" when we read it aloud together. It is short enough to be read in one sitting, yet has a chapter book style that young readers will appreciate. The author has a real gift for making the children in the book come alive and the situations portrayed made me remember the real challenges and joys of being a kid in elementary school. The book communicates a great message about reaching out to others with kindness and overcoming social barriers to develop friendships. The book has the added bonus of teaching about haiku and oragami. My children were eager to follow the directions included at the end for making a snowflake and an oragami bird. Make a cup of hot cocoa and find a cozy spot to enjoy this simple, yet engaging story!

Grounded in practicality
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.

Joy Berry's book does an excellent job of ensuring that the reader has a clear grasp on the practical implications of holding to godly ideals for home life. While others may get bogged down in their ideals, Berry brings these principles into day-to-day living and offers suggestions as to how they may be fleshed out. Reading this book has had a definite impact on my desire and ability to enjoy being a "keeper of the home".

I was a supporter of Gary Hart in 1984. Susan Berry Casey was an organizer of his successful New Hampshire primary that year. When this book came out in 1986 I read it for that reason. I got far more than what I expected. Not only was it an incredibly detailed and exciting account of the primary, it was a step by step guide to community organizing that could be applied to just about anything from political causes to church gatherings. I have since started or assisted in the founding of several community action groups. Much of the credit for my enthusiam and practical skills comes from this book. It is worth looking for and buying if you can find it.

Greatest Trial Lawyer Ever?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-24
While Clarence Darrow is often on the lips of those who reach back into history of the greatest trial lawyers of all time, Moman Pruiett tops them all. The historical aspect and the outrageousness is better than any fiction - 303 acquittals in 343 murder cases by allegedly mastering the art of jury tampering and deceitful testimony.), this is a gem of a story that every lawyer should read about. It's not about a lawyer who plays by the rules by any means - and this isn't fiction either.

One of the interesting aspects is that he didn't decide to become a lawyer until after his own second conviction (which he served two years), felt that he had been wronged, and swore out the vendetta to empty the jails "and turn thieves and murderers loose . . . in a perfectly legal way."

One of the great stories in the book: The lawyer, Pruiett received a message from a distant state late in his career saying "I have been charged with murder. Have $5,000. Will you defend me?" Pruiett's immediate reply, "Am leaving on the next train with three eyewitnesses."

It was a different time and different place. Famed Law Professor Gerald Uelmen (also of OJ "Dream Team" fame) wrote a good article about Pruiett in the early 1980s and mentioned him in a '99-'00 law review article "Who is the Lawyer of the Century."
