I love the idea of the child being able to read and see that their behavior is not exceptable. It is an optional discipline
method for those of us who have tried everything.

I don't Wanna be Selfish, so Help Me be Good

This children's book by Joy Berry is short, to the point and has excellent comic book type illustrations that will catch any
toddler's eye. The book opens with little blond and very selfish Katie not wanting to share her toys with red-headed Sam.
Your toddler will learn right off the bat that other children do not like playing with selfish kids, because selfish kids
care more about themselves than they do others.
You'll be asking your toddler as you read along how he or she feels and thinks about selfish children. Do they feel left out? Do they feel angry? Your toddler will get the picture pretty fast that selfish is just not the way to be.
And to reinforce the don't be selfish theme, the second half of the books shows Sam playing with his new friend, Tami. Unlike Katie, Sam is not selfish and he and Tami enjoy themselves playing while Katie is obviously left out, because nobody like a selfish little girl, or boy.
Ms. Berry's books are all delightful and it's a puzzle to me why they are so hard to get. One would think that this is the kind of book every toddler should grow up with. I'm glad I have them and my son Devon is too.

This book helps young children distinguish between telling stories, making mistakes and lying. It also covers lying by telling
a lie, lying by not telling the truth and making amends for a lie. It points out how you undermine trust when you lie. Very
simple words and layout with good pictures. An excellent book for the young on lying.

Joy Says it's not Good to Overdo Stuff

This children's book by Joy Berry is short, to the point and has excellent comic book type illustrations by John Costanza
that will catch any toddler's eye.
The message here is that your child should not overdo anything. If he or she overdoes eating, they can get a stomach ache. It they overdo staying up and don't go to bed till late, they can't get up on time in the morning. If they overdo playing with just one person, they won't have many friends. And they certainly shouldn't overdo TV. That is something I heartily agree with. In fact my gal Sara and I don't have have a TV. We read to our son Devon. In fact we read a lot of Joy Berry's books to him.
Ms. Berry's books are all delightful and it's a puzzle to me why they are so hard to get. One would think that this is the kind of book every toddler should grow up with. I'm glad I have them and my son Devon is too.

Tattling is Bad, Way Bad

A child might tattle because she wants attention, that's not a good reason to tattle, neither is tattling to make yourself
seem better than others or because you're too lazy to solve your own problems. When you tattle you hurt someone else's feelings.
If someone is doing something wrong, it's better to show them the right way than to tattle. At least that's what Joy Berry
says and I agree with her. This is an excellent little book and it will show your toddler just how wrong tattling is. However,
there is that rare time when telling is important, something you must do, and Ms. Berry covers that too.

From book's back cover:
"The Chinaberry Tree, both poignant and hilarious, is an autobiographical account of growing up in a small Southern town during the Great Depression, and of reaching adulthood in the treacherous times of World War II and the Korean War.
Humorous accounts of childhood antics and family life during these hard times are interwoven with tales of family unity, tolerance, and determination, both to survive and succeed."

Chinese film studies experts Chris Berry and Mary Farquhar present China On Screen: Cinema And Nation, an exploration of more
than one hundred years of Chinese cinema and nation. Revealing how movies from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora
create different ideas of Chinese nation, whether empire, republic, or ethnically based, China On Screen touches on such issues
as male and female star images, transnational production, the image of the "good foreigner" among others. A quite thought-provoking
and extensively researched academic study.

(soft-cover edition): This is a well-written book by an author who obviously respects the artist and his music. Some writing
on 1950s rockers has been patronizing and inaccurate. Here we have an engaging, balanced analysis of a musical genius and
his recordings and live performances. The description of filming Chuck's part in a rock and roll movie is fascinating. It
reveals a multi-faceted man, quite protective of his own legend.
Discography is a little light but for 1983 it's fine.
This is a nice complement to the Berry autobiography which was published later in the decade.

This cookbook answers the daily question of what to have for dinner from the perspective of home cooking from many different
countries and cultures. The DK style of publishing ensures lots of colorful pictures with informative and helpful subsections,
such as how to fillet a flatfish or different methods of cooking rice. While I've not filleted a flatfish, I would not be
afraid to try using the instructions in this book. More importantly, it has an exhaustive list of appealing recipes that
will provide variety to your diet. Everything I have made from this book has been good, and many have gone on to become family
favorites and staples, such as chicken pot pie, or meat pies with cheesy potato topping. It covers food from the basic to
the somewhat exotic, but still within the skill set of the basic American cook.
