This is the best book that I have read on how discoveries are really made. Reading the book is an adventure in itself and it touches on every aspect of the scientific process: theoretic, experimental, aesthetic, sociological, political, geographic, &c.

Very inspiring and highly recommended to potential mavericks.

One of the best books on science I have read.

Discovering is a book about how discoveries are made in science. It is one of the most liberating books any scientist in any field can read. It is also highly creative in its format where the story of Discovering unfolds through the work of six characters -- not all of them scientists.

A really good read for all, and a must read for anyone serious about studying science or making discoveries. This includes social scientists as well as physical scientists.

Great book about the history of Minnesota sports and its heroes. If you're like me, you've probably forgotten many of the great memories Bernstein brings back to life. He covers the Vikings, Twins, Gophers, North Stars, State High School Tournaments and much more. Everyone who has made Minnesota proud in the sports arena seems to be in this book: From Tarkenton, Puckett, Killebrew and Cris Carter to Willie Burton, Chuck Foreman, Sandy Stephens, Elgin Baylor and Patty Berg. The author not only documents the history, but includes entertaining quotes from the athletes and their teammates. This is a really fun book to read and own. The book is hard cover and loaded with photographs. I have mine displayed on my coffee table. I strongly recommend it.

I bought Fifty Years, Fifty Heroes for my husband as a Christmas present. He hasn't stopped thanking me. The book is loaded with memorable stories about great moments in Minnesota sports history. Bernstein interviewed everybody who's anybody in Minnesota sports. There are lots of stories told by Minnesota sports legends themselves. For example Jack Morris tells about how his memory of Fran Tarkenton provided the motivation he needed to pitch a nearly flawless game 7 of the 1991 World Series. He was determined not to go down in history as a guy who couldn't win the big one. My husband enjoys reliving memorable moments as seen through the eyes of the athletes, from their unique perspective.

Balanced Look at the Presidency of LBJ
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-28
While considering this book I found a book review by American Studies Today Online, so I have posted it at the bottom of this review. I thought it was appropriate.

"Book Review: Guns or Butter: the Presidency of Lyndon Johnson by Irving Bernstein.

"Warfare, rioting, assassinations: mayhem continues to be the dominant image of America in the mid-1960s, with Lyndon Johnson presiding. This book is intended to redress an 'unfair balance' in the treatment of the man and his time in office, which has skewed our perception almost exclusively to what went wrong.

"The tragedy of Lyndon Johnson's presidency, according to the author of this new political biography, was that Johnson believed that he could have both guns and butter - that his vision of the United States as a 'great society' could be fulfilled alongside the waging of war in southeast Asia. It was to be a tragedy of epic proportions.

"In the aftermath of Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, and especially after the Democrats' landslide victory in the presidential election a year later, Johnson set about the task of continuing and extending his predecessor's liberal reform programme. Legislative achievements included the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Medicare, and a series of progressive measures relating to immigration, education and conservation. Together they constituted a new 'New Deal': FDR was LBJ's political hero.

"With rapid economic growth in the mid-1960s, the Democrats could have looked forward to a lengthy stay in office during which Johnson's vision of the 'great society' might have been made still more a reality. But his decision to engage US military forces in the long-running conflict in Vietnam changed everything.

"Bernstein has produced a very readable narrative of the domestic triumphs and foreign travails of the Johnson administration, richly documented from the archives of the LBJ presidential library in Austin, Texas. His book gives fascinating insights into the American political process, and into Johnson's complex personality.

"Despite the author' s hope to rehabilitate LBJ's reputation by focussing on the domestic accomplishments, it is the descent into the quagmire of Vietnam that comes to dominate his account. The style of writing is often vivid, sometimes colloquial, always lucid. There are useful historical backgrounds given to all the issues under discussion, and brief biographical sketches of the principal policy-makers in the Johnson administration. The book is generously illustrated, and is a storehouse of material from which teachers and students can draw readily for a better understanding of those dramatic years of American hope and despair, dream and nightmare, over which LBJ presided."

I've read this book twice and each time my admiration grows. Bernstein has written a book that accurately assesses what went right with Johnson's presidency. Johnson, on domestic policy, rivaled FDR in brilliance. Although Bernstein's goal is to show us the "forgotten" LBJ, he doesn't shrink from showing us how badly he failed when it came to the Vietnam War. This book contained lots of information but it never got bogged down in the details.

An exclusive collaborative study on the prevalence of unity between Christianity and Judaism

Healing The Jewish-Christian Rift: Growing Beyond Our Wounded History, deftly co-authored by author Ron Miller (Chair oft the Religion Department at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, cofounder of Common Ground-adult group for interfaith religious study and dialogue since 1975) and Laura Bernstein (published Jewish writer, Jewish scholar and leader of interfaith groups in sacred chant and meditation), is an exclusive collaborative study on the prevalence of unity between Christianity and Judaism. Readers will discover the significant progression the past two decades have brought in uniting the two Abrahamic faiths from the darkness of the past two thousand years of death and bloodshed being afflicted from one to the other. Healing The Jewish-Christian Rift is a studious examination of what is yet to come between Judaism and Christianity as effect of the many struggling to make the difference and is highly recommended to all readers with an interest in cultural studies, religious studies, modern religion, as well as Christian Studies and/or Judaic Studies.

In Healing the Jewish-Christian Rift, Miller and Bernstein offer a much-needed approach to constructive dialogue between Jews and Christians. It freshens the air of stale and unhelpful interpretations of important aspects of the life of Jesus and the Gospels. The heart of the book finds and appreciates the love ethic found in both religions. Most importantly, it's a passionate work of faith that encourages conversation that breaks down barriers to healing and shared values. I highly recommend this book for people of faith everywhere, regardless of religious affiliation.

Little Known Battle of Great Importance

Review Date: 2008-01-10
Biak could have been a disaster and featured fierce fighting and great bravery and initiative among US forces. Intelligence underestimated (surprise!) the strength of the Japanese garrison and their tenacity (many were veterans of the tough China campaigns)as well as Japanese naval forces operating in or near Biak. MzcArthur was determined to take Biak as another stepping stone to an eventual Japanese invasion, and did, but things could have turned out badly for the General and the American forces.Author Bernstein did an excellent job on the research as you would expect a professional researcher to do. He has a direct and "reporting" writing style which may be an issue for the casual reader. But for anyone truly interested in WWII, especially the Pacific Theater, this is an excellent read. Highly recommended.

Biak Island, off the northwest coast of New Guinea, was the site of one of the bloodiest battles fought by American troops against the Japanese in World War II. In the spring of 1944, the Japanese Imperial Navy held Biak as their most important island in the Pacific. MacArthur needed its airfields in order to continue his advance towards the Phillippines. The Japanese had 12,00 defenders on Biak, dug in and ready to fight to the last man. Casualties were heavy on both sides. Highly recommended for military history students and World War II buffs, Marc Bernstine's Hurricane At Biak: Macarthur Against The Japanese, May - August 1944 is a vivid, comprehensive reconstruction of that horrific campaign and an invaluable contribution to World War II studies.

Clear, Focused and Fair Book on a Controversial Topic
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-27
There have been a number of slams against stock options by people who think they are at the heart of corporate scandals. This readable and thorough book points out that sharing ownership broadly has been a tremendous benefit to many companies, although a few have abused it. Those of us who have seen companies grow dramatically through the efforts of incentived employees know that options are the best system devised for sharing ownership broadly, and that current attempts to restrict them will do more harm than good for the US economy. This book carefully documents both the benefits and abuses, and should be useful for entrepreneurs who want to build companies, and for regulators who want to really curb abuses while saving the benefits -- and chance for broad based wealth creation -- that employee ownership represents.

Timely examination of employee ownership

Review Date: 2003-01-16
This is a very carefully crafted and persuasive book. The authors do a great job of laying out the argument for why sharing ownership broadly with employees is good for companies, shareholders, and employees, while concentrating ownership in just a few executives is a bad idea. The book is especially important now with all the debate going on about stock options, which they point out are just one of the ways companies can share ownership. The book provides the most comprehensive data on this subject to date, so its arguments are not just based on preconceived notions. It deserves a wide audience, especially among corporate decision makers.

Did you miss the Johns retrospective at NY MOMA? This book captures the essence of an American Michaelangelo. Subjective? You bet! If you have even the slightest interest in modern art your library is not complete without this retrospective. The many color and b&w photographs are superb, and it is accompanied by a solid chronology of Mr. Johns's life. Emphasis is on original works, but includes a good selection of more important lithographs (I recommend the prints Catalog Raisonne by ULAE if you want a complete reference work in this area). A tour de force by Varnedoe and his editing team!

here is a fabulous book on the american painter Jasper Johns.
As usual, the museum of modern art offers us a big book (more than 400 pages), with beautiful pictures of his work and a great look at his artistic evolution.
So, if there's a book about Jasper Johns to buy, this is the good one!
very complete and great page setting.

I agree with Erika Sorocco 100% on her reveiw. This IS a cute and fluffy plot involving luck and charm. I do too like to read the movie novel before I go see the movie, knowing what to expect when I watch it, to see if the movie novel and the movie are simular. This movie novel and the movie are very simular, and this movie novel captures every part of the funny movie. I purchased and read this first before I saw the movie and it was very cute and adorable, even though I do not know why the movie critics bashed it so much and gave it horrible reveiws. This movie novel has wit and style, being a quick read so you can read it quickly and go see the movie. This movie novel only took me about an hour to read, for I am a very quick reader. Lindsay Lohan's character is pretty and has the most luck in the world. Chris Pine's character is cool and awesome, having the worst luck in the world, leaving Chris and Lindsay to be the perfect couple in this romantic comedy about luck. This movie novel is highly recommended and so is the movie!

Hope you enjoy! If you liked this, you may like

Ashley Albright has got it all. A high-profile job - along with a fabulous new promotion - gorgeous clothes, parties filled to the brim with celebrities...face it, she's on a permanent winning streak. Then there's Jake. Jake is a handsome guy, making ends meet as a janitor, as he tries to boost his career as a music mogul. The problem? The band that he's managing is bound to break-up - unless he helps them launch themselves into the industry. But no matter how hard Jake tries to better himself, nothing ever seems to pan out. But that all changes when Jake crashes Ashley's celebrity bash, and the two of them share an electrically-charged, passionate kiss. One that leads Ashley to believe that she's just hit luck in love. But then the stranger - Jake - disappears, and suddenly Ashley's heel breaks, her skirt rips, and she's carted off to jail. Whereas Jake's bad luck has suddenly changed to good. Now, Ashley must find the mysterious, handsome stranger, and exchange one last kiss with him, in an attempt to win back her luck, even if it means leaving behind a potential boyfriend.

I have a tendency to purchase movie novelizations of films that I want to see, in an attempt to "find out" what they're all about, before the film hits the big screen. With JUST MY LUCK - adapted by Laurie Calkhoven - I have struck gold, for the premise is adorable, and the plot is fast-paced and cute. Ashley is a fantastic character, who thinks that luck will follow her wherever she goes, no matter what; while Jake is the adorable Prince-in-training, looking to accumulate any luck he can get - no matter how little. These two characters play off of each other extremely well, and give the reader a view of two personalities - grateful and ungrateful. A fun, quick read, that you'll be lucky to get your hands on.
