I love this book and I love the series. I just started reading them. I recommend them for any High School Musical lover, or even if they are not a HSM lover. I seen all the movies and I can't wait for HSM3!

A good series.

This is book # 6. It's about East High's United Heart Association's annual Valentines Day fund-raiser called "Heart to Heart". East High is competing against West High to raise the most money and Sharpay is out to make sure East High wins! This book is 125pp. The last 5 of those pages are a sneak peak of the first chapter of book #7 Friends Forever. My 9 year old didn't have too much trouble reading this book but there were a few challenging words. I recommend this for advanced readers. If you like HSM you'll love these books!

This is a outstanding book if you are interested in the investment process. It covers recognizing and managing risk, asset allocation, and security selection . It's a challenging book, especially the area of hedging risk, but well worth the effort. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the mechanics of investment management.

This book attempts to show how statistical mechanics can be applied to cosmology. No other book has done the same thing in such generality starting from first principles. There are mistakes in the book but these are not conceptual. If even a paperback is done the author will correct these mistakes. Trust me. jeremy bernstein

A must have to understand cosmological Boltzmann equation
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-09
To be honest, this book is a must have for anybody out there who wants to work in the new so-called precision cosmology (CMB temperature and polarization anisotropy, large scale galaxy redshift survey, weak lensing etc.). I am actually not working in cosmology, but I have been spending quite some time teaching myself cosmology, and I can say that this book has become gold mine when I tried to understand Boltzmann equation in the context of cosmology.

The Boltzmann equation relates the time evolution of thermodynamic distribution function of a species to collisions or interactions between species. Some treatments of Boltzmann equation can be found in elementary statistical physics or solid state physics. The species under consideration are electrons, phonons, photons, or atoms.

In the context of cosmology, things are become more complicated due to three things:

1) General relativistic approach. We must take into account the perturbed metric and cosmic expansion.

2) There are exotic species such as dark matter and neutrinos besides the CMB photons, electrons, and baryons.

3) The interactions are not only electromagnetic.

The books is a bit concise, but with a careful reading it really helps. It begins with three chapters introducing essentials of general relativity, kinetic theory, and general relativistic Boltzmann equation. Then it introduces the canonical example of one particle species with self-interaction.
The general Lee-Weinberg problem of stable, neutral particle-antiparticle species are treated in two chapters with great details. Unstable particles comes next. The final two chapters deal with recombination and helium production.

A treatment with similar spirit can be found in some chapters of Scott Dodelson's Modern Cosmology (Academic Press, 2003, ISBN 0122191412) but in less detail. Dodelson himself suggested this book for further reading. Dodelson worked with the author of this book when the book was still in the writing phase, and the author did mention his name in the preface.

Table of Contents
1. Tools: relativity
2. Tools: cosmodynamics
3. Tools: kinetic theory
4. The canonical example
5. The generalized Lee-Weinberg problem: background
6. The generalized Lee-Weinberg problem: examples
7. Unstable particles
8. The recombination regime
9. Cosmological helium production
Five appendices without titles.

Too bad this book is out of print now. Try your local library, inter-library loan, or buy it used. Get it, you will need it during your whole cosmology career to understand Boltzmann equation in cosmology.

A useful book for details
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-16
This is a slightly altered reproduction of a book originally published in 1959. Aline Bernstein, who among other things was a theatrical costume designer, produced the material in 1930 with the aid of a Rockefeller Grant. All are based on actual costumes.

Bernstein has presented drawings of 31 dresses and 3 Regency spencer jackets. There are small, but clear color reproductions, four to each approximately 9" x 12" plate, on eight plates in the center of the book. In addition, there is a full page sized black-and-white reproduction of each costume.

The strength of this book is that each fashion is accompanied by a drawing of a contemporary hair style, shoes, and the undergarments, including corsets, petticoats, etc., which would often have to be pulled from different reference sources. Many are also accompanied by a drawing of the pattern for the main item. The patterns are not scaled to different sizes.

A useful reference book, especially given the price.

A great introduction to modeling of MEMS and NEMS
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-24
The book Modeling MEMS and NEMS by John Pelesko is a great read. It is comprehensive, fun, and easy to follow for anyone who has basic math and physics skills.
It is full with good examples, but the most positive argument for this book is that it illustrates the correct way of modeling the operation of a mems device: First you investigate the physics, you create a mathematical model of the MEMS device based on differential equations and find a solution, and than you try to improve on your mathematical model by use of simulations.

The book doesn't get 5 stars though because it is an introduction to modeling, not the full story. At the end of the book, the story becomes incomplete. This is when the step from mathematics to computer-simulations has to be made, and this part is not half as detailed as the first, mathematical, part. You cannot model MEMS solely using analytical skills, at one point you just have to turn to simulations. J.Pelesko recognizes this and does write a good start on how to utilize computer simulations to aid the modeling.

All in all, the first book for any person that needs to learn the skills for modeling MEMS and NEMS, but not the only book they should read.

Finally a comprehensive book

Review Date: 2003-02-13
This is among the finest books for modeling MEMS. Most other books give a mish-mash of fabrication and modeling, but you never figure out how to model!! This one is different. This is the gold standard for MEMS books to come.. I picked it up along with many other MEMS books from the library, never thought I would use it, but this is the ONLY book I use. Good even for the the advanced MEMS designer as a quick reference. But great for a new reader who wants to grasp the fundamental of modeling.

every therapist needs this book
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-21
The primary author is well known as an instructor of "Family Law" for graduate students of psychology, social work, marriage & family therapy, etc. at several north Texas universities. His courses are always well-received. A previous reviewer commented that a mental health professional would have been helpful. I doubt that would make a difference since so many professionals from various clinical disciplines use these authors as resources. This book is a great adjunct to remind yourself what you need to do as a professional to protect yourself & your clients. While you do not offer legal advice if you are not an attorney, being aware of these issues makes a counselor more likely to recommend that a client see an attorney for advice. Also, re-reading this book on a regular basis reminds us of what we need to continue to do to protect our professional licenses. Often when we are in private practice, just as in other areas of life, we sometimes get lax or forget to attend to all the details necessary to protect us as professionals & our clients. This book is a must for your professional library.

I stumbled across this book while preparing a project as part of my undergrad Psychology studies at the University of Utah. What a lucky find this is! *** Many statements exist in the world of mental health practice regarding what standards of professionalism, ethicality, conduct, and confidentiality a psychologist should adhere to. Many of them, I've discovered so far, are abstract: they state the standard but give little, if any, illustration on how a practicing therapist applies all that to his/her job and life. This book is the first I've uncovered that gives the clear and understandable picture that I need as an aspiring psychologist. *** I think I understand well enough the general principle that motivated the authors to write this book: all too often, each of us has gotten burned in the past because of some rule, some technicality, some law that would have worked in our favor had we acted with a knowledge of it. For example, I know someone who wouldn't have paid a single cent of his medical bills caused by an on-the-job accident had he simply reported his injury within 48 hours instead of waiting a week. Things like that. I'm always making sure I do things like keep receipts, review credit card statements, and watch what creeps into my college transcripts, because it's the little things that can screw our lives up so badly. All the more so for therapists, the authors believe, because of their heavy responsibility to safeguard their clients' welfare, and because unfortunately their training doesn't seem to prepare them for some types of potential legal trouble. *** As part of that approach, this book takes an interesting departure from other literature on mental health ethics. Despite what the title says, the contents seem to focus not so much on protecting the client--although that principle is by no means diminished--as it does on protecting the therapist. That may seem selfish, but hey, you've got to learn this stuff somehow! *** The authors do an excellent job of explaining a diversity of issues in understandable ways. They use well-constructed scenarios that make you ask yourself, "what would I do if faced with this dilemma?" Then they systematically explain what the options are, and what to avoid along the way. They show you several sample documents along the way that demonstrate how to remove any legal doubts from your practice. The objective is to prevent things from going wrong, but they also discuss when things get ugly, such as a client who commits suicide and the relatives sue you, the therapist, for malpractice. Or when to breach confidentiality and activate your "duty to warn" if a client threatens violence against someone else--or yourself. *** I noted that the authors were both lawyers, and that only one was licensed as a master social worker. I wish, despite their impressive knowledge and experience, that a psychologist might have collaborated with them on this work. I wonder what sort of change in perspective it would have brought to have someone involved in this writing who was solely a practioner of mental health, and not of law. *** Nevertheless, if you have a vested interest in psychology, I think this is essential reading. If you are a practicing psychologist, and you do not completely know these practical issues, you may be an unwitting candidate for some serious trouble. If you are, like me, someone who hopes one day to become a psychologist, this is an excellent way to introduce and orient yourself to some very pertinent information--and get a firm and realistic picture of what it's really going to be like for you. Best you pay attention.

If you like Charming Small Hotels in Paris, this is the Book
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.

We were in Paris in April 2000. From this book we picked a small hotel in the San Germain area, on the Left Bank. We loved the hotel, it was the perfect location for us, and great service. After reading this book, we choose five hotels that we were interested in. I am sure that any of the five hotels would have been to our liking. This book made it so easy to decided where we wanted to stay in Paris. It was recomended to us by a friend who had used it for her trip to Paris.

The BEST Guide for genuine Parisian accommodations
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-12
If you would like to find a hotel (in the words of the authors) "as alluring and memorable as the city itself", use this guidebook. If you want all the creature comforts of home, a large air-conditioned room with a big TV in a "known" chain hotel with room service, look elsewhere. Picking a hotel from the choices reviewed in this guide almost assures an added dimension to your experience in the city of Paris. It is well worth the extra $ to add this guide to your trip library in order to find that special place.

The hotels listed are typically locally owned small hotels located in wonderful historic buildings and neighborhoods. Rooms do tend to be smaller at this type of a hotel in all of Europe, including Paris, but the added character of these accommodations more than makes up for the shorter list of amenities and square footage difference. One should not spend a great deal of time in the hotel room while in Paris anyway.

These are the types of hotels I imagine the relatives of local Parisians stay at when visiting the city. Be a traveler, not a tourist, and live some of the local flavor by staying at these choices. I personally have stayed at three of the listed hotels over the last five years and all were exactly as described. Read the reviews carefully and pick the ones that sound best to you. Paris is a very special city; your hotel choice should be special also.

This was a decent and informative read, but it is maybe more activist that academic. Most of the essays come from Human Rights Watch, which is a fine organization, but it does tend to make the book a little one-sided. The finest sections were from independent authors, with the exception of the final chapter written by HRW's general counsel which was a great essay. Of course, the book's biggest shortcoming is that it fails to conclusively answer its own questions: does torture ever make us safer? Is it ever okay? You can draw some conclusions from the authors, but without being able to read some of the other side of this debate, the answers are at least somewhat superficial. I recommend this book as an accompaniment to others on the subject.

Excellent!

This is the type of literature we need to read to remind ourselves of the atrocoties of war. I will recommend this book to anyone interested in analyzing the justifications of torture, with the premise that some claim it might save others from harm. Easy to read essays, good for the everyday reader and for the scholar. I would also recommend it to those guys prepping to be deployed.
