Not since Shakespeare or Pirsig has a book had such a widespread impact on the collective social consciousness. This slim volume has changed the course of post-coldwar politics and forced the major superpowers to reconsider their role as spiritual guides of a new generation.

In short if you have to read a single book in your brief existence it had better be this one.

You owe it to yourself. You owe it to humanity. Pax

A better understanding of the present through the past
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-07
The American involvement in Iraq has rightfully been described as a huge mess of epic proportions by the press on this side of the world. "The Mesopotamia Mess: The British Invasion of Iraq in 1914" is an examination of how complicated messes for liberating forces going into Iraq is nothing new - and how the Americans have learned just about nothing making the move into Iraq from their allied British invader's history. Stating point by point every lesson that should have been picked up by the Americans before diving into the mess of Iraq, it's a somewhat saddening story of history repeating itself. "The Mesopotamia Mess: The British Invasion of Iraq in 1914" is highly recommended for anyone who desires a better understanding of the present through the past, and for community library military collections.

ABOUT THE BOOK FROM THE AUTHOR, ROSS BERNSTEIN
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-18
Minnesota's wonderful hockey history comes to life like never before in Ross Bernstein's newest book, "More... Frozen Memories," the updated and expanded sequel to the 1999 regional best-seller, "Frozen Memories."
With nearly 800 images, the book is both entertaining as well as insightful. Featured in it are literally hundreds of this past century's greatest professional, senior, amateur and high school teams, along with countless biographies and stories of their star players. While some of the stories are riveting, intriguing and even heart-breaking, others are downright hilarious.
From Roseau to Rochester, and from Warroad to White Bear Lake, it's all here. Not only is there a complete history of Minnesota's beloved High School Tournament (both boys and girls) there are also feature chapters and vignettes on the histories of the Wild, North Stars, Fighting Saints, Minnesota Moose, Duluth Hornets, Eveleth Reds, Minneapolis Millers, St. Paul Saints and Warroad Lakers, among others.
There are also chapters on nearly all of Minnesota's college and university teams, including the Minnesota Gophers, UM-Duluth Bulldogs, St. Cloud State Huskies, Minnesota State Mavericks, Bemidji State Beavers, as well as all of the MIAC schools. In addition, there are chapters on the evolution of the women's game, in-line skating, junior hockey, junior and community college hockey, the 1960 and 1980 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic teams, and so much more.
From John Mariucci to Moose Goheen, and from Herbie Lewis to the Hanson Brothers, "More... Frozen Memories" truly celebrates one of Minnesota's greatest treasures -- the sport and lifestyle of hockey.

Great resource!

A friend showed me this book after I mentioned to him the problem I was having located good information about women scientists, especially those who had made contributions in the field of geology. This book is a great place to start this research! Written for grades 5 and up, it provides biographical sketches of women who have made contributions in a variety of the sciences. It also includes fairly simple activities that allow students to get a taste of what it's like to work in the particular field of science. A glossary and a short bibliography make this a great resource for the shelf of any science teacher.

A contrarian and Emersonian shakeup of US poetics
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-11
"My Way" offers a contrarian and Emersonian shakeup (and shakedown) of US poetics and its normative liberal pieties. I find these mixed-genre essays to be stimulating, energizing, dismantling, inventive, taking the grounds of "a poetics" into a newfoundland of play, risk, and stylistic mixture. By this, I mean that the prior senses of voice and forms of genre, not to mention the stabilities of "poetic diction," are taken into stranger post-ego areas of language risk, secular conversion, and fun. Sinatra did it "my way," and Charles Bernstein (like a zanier Bob Dylan watching a Marx Brothers movie while reading Deleuze and composing the Greenwich Village Joe Hill Blues on a used mouth harp) did it his, and "official verse culture" in the United States will never be the smug same old poesy again. Not for those whose version of pastoral is still made of petunia flowers, tylanol, and sheep.
