WHIMSICAL TAKE ON AN OLD, OLD FAVORITE

Aesop himself would grin if he could see the laugh-out-loud illustrations by Andrew Glass for a whimsical update of the age old fable. This hare has floppy ears that certainly do flop, a tummy that protrudes above his orange running shorts, stray hairs that sprout from his eye brows, and two prominent Chiclet-like teeth. As if that weren't enough, he's an object of ridicule, laughed at by the self-satisfied Easter Bunny. In fact, every rabbit in the village avoids him since he lost the race to the tortoise.

The tortoise, "Mr. Slow and Steady himself," has enjoyed a great deal of success since his triumph. He's ranked "No. 1 on the list of Most Admired Reptiles" and penned a book titled "My Hare-Racing Experience." Still, he feels he's had enough of fame and turtle parades that last six weeks. He just wants to return to a normal life, and so he would like to race again.

A rematch is in the offing with the hare demanding a pair of silk pajamas if he wins, and the tortoise asking for a pair of cool sunglasses because he thought sunglasses would allow him to hide (he'd heard this worked in Hollywood).

Youngsters will be surprised at the outcome of this contest and want to look at the hilarious illustrations again and again.

But enjoyable for the kids too. This retelling of the Aesopian tale is clever and wickedly funny. The illustrations are a perfect complement to Bernstein's sardonic writing style. A winner for any picture book libraray!

One of the best technique books!

This book is invaluable for any pianist who wants to teach. Bernstein provides very clear directions, pictures, and exercise to illustrate each motion. So often teachers focus mainly on the abstracts of music such as the notes, the rhythms, the sound, the dynamics, the expression, without much discussion of how we produce the sound, and how different motions, and engagement of different muscles affects the sound produced. I highly recommend this book for piano teachers of all skill levels and educational backgrounds.

As a book for students, I would only recommend it for older students who enjoy reading, problem solving, and have decent attention spans--because of the lengthy blocks of text. He does use some rather silly looking and sounding exercises (such as playing with a pencil) to illustrate the basics of sound production.

The only real problem I had with the book is that his assessment of proper hand position. It seemed to me that either his idea of perfect hand position involved wrists raised above the natural line of arm and wrist, or he had unusually structured hands. He speaks at one point of playing with "straight fingers" and I myself cannot play that way without raising my wrists to an almost painful level. However, that is a small thing, and the wealth of information in this book, and the physical understanding of the act of playing piano makes this book worth every penny!

Mr. Bernstein has again authored an invaluable volume. This book contains a methodical and straight-forward instruction in the key principles of expressive piano playing, and the fundamentals are the best that can be found in modern piano literature. The salient point is that Mr. Bernstein uses simple and effective means to demonstrate how to achieve control. In addition, it is noticable that a section on the piano mechanism itself is included. This is something that most pianists and teachers have very little knowledge about - but they certainly should! We can thank Seymour Berstein for his efforts, may he continue to produce excellent piano instructional literature.

Wonderful Song Book!

I love the new recording of this musical, and was disappointed when it didn't come with printed lyrics to the songs. So I was very excited when I saw the new Wonderful Town songbook, which has almost all of the songs from the show, plus a synopsis. These songs are lovely reminders of the show, and would be great to sing in revues or talent shows, for I don't think Wonderful Town is a very well known show, which is a shame. I think it's one of Comden and Green's best. Songs like "Swing" and "Pass the Football" only get better when you see the lyrics in their full glory. My only wish is that they had included color stills of the show, but we can't have everything!

Absenteeism

Review Date: 2006-11-22
Absenteeism is a universal problem in an industrail society. A nation at war must deal with it by urgent means. A democratic nation at peace handles it by persuasion and by rule at the plant level, often in the give-and-take of collective bargaining. The nature of absenteeism as a problem and the means that have evolved to deal with it are the subject of this pamphlet.

American History Made Easier Than Eating Jello
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-28
I am a teacher of learning disabled children and adults. As such, I am always looking for easy but interesting material for my students. America's History is, surprisingly, one of those books.
I was introduced to the book by an adult student. Almost a non-reader, as he slowly learned to read, this book was used. He was absolutely enthralled by it. As a slow learner in school, he never learned anything about the history of our country, so every page was new and exciting to him. It starts with the early explorers and visitors to our coasts, then brings Pilgrims and immigrants to the country, and continues on through the years with the colonization, industrialization, wars, common people, and famous men and women.
The book is interestingly written and holds attention by short paragraphs and easy vocabulary, yet covers all of the major concepts and history. But it never talks down to the reader. Adult learners need to have things expressed at their own adult level, but too often, unfamiliar words and too much repetition defeat the purpose. Comprehension, too often overlooked, is easily grasped by this good effort. And even at this level, better readers can also enjoy the book, because it is telling things that many adults have forgotten about their own country. It refreshes without boring. (Even the teacher often enjoys the refresher course !)
Try it with your own children, for example. I think you'll find it both interesting and easily understood.
The book was so useful and so interesting that I even bought one for the student who brought it to my attention. Don't you think he deserved it?

This is the most important piece to the two-book series, America's Story. It is easy to use and paced for high-interest, low-level readers. It brings our history to life for these learners.
