READ THE FIRST ESSAY IN THIS BOOK REPEAT

I AGREE: GREAT FIRST ESSAY
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-24
Responding to what the previous poster wrote: The first chapter in the book, "Artifice as Absorption" is a captivating and provocative essay on what makes so-called "difficult" literature valuable. As if to prove his point about how "anti-absorptive" works (such as the writing of Beckett, Gertrude Stein, LANGUAGE poets like Bernstein) are sometimes more engaging than your typical potboiler, Bernstein has produced an unlikely page-turner here. Among the chapter's "artificial" effects: it's written in verse, and it has footnotes. And one warning: it probably will be difficult to decipher if you're not somewhat conversant with literary theory. But if you're interested in literature, especially poetry, Bernstein's is an invaluable take on some of the debates currently raging over what makes verse, especially difficult or avant-garde verse, worth worrying over. I particularly like his point that "common-voice" poetry (like Gary Snyder's or Robert Bly's), though the accepted model for "honest" poetry, is really doubly artificial, because it's hiding its artifice behind a masquerade of plainspokenness.

Full disclousre: I'm a grad student and a poet (though not as avant- as Bernstein) and I really loved this essay. I'm still working through the rest of the book, which I checked out from the library.

We received this highly useful, entertaining book as a Christmas gift. Traditionally I give my husband the new World Almanac at Christmas, and our daughters decided to augment the practice by adding this book. For information junkies, this book is decidedly a keeper! As you can leaf through it your curiosity will be stimulated, and you will learn something new. From a succinct description of how the electoral college works, to first aid advice for any emergency, to what to look for in a college or graduate school program, this book has it. Highly recommended!

This book covers any subject that you can imagine. If you want to know about investments, poker, camping, cars, or health, all in one book this is the book for you. It gives a few pages to each topic, and helps you learn a little about each topic. Every time that somebody sees me reading it, they ask what I am reading, and when I tell them they ask to borrow the book, and most of the time they read it for a few hours and ask me where I bought it, and I tell them AMAZON.COM. For just a few bucks they have a great resource at their fingertips just like I do.

An important examination of Politics and Sex

This book is a valuable contribution to the literature--it is a no holds barred examination of the social control of sex via patriarchal norms. In other words, if you are a conservative reader then expect to be challenged on your principles. However, progressive readers will delight in the articulation of the impact of social control on sex.

Readers interested in fiction about sex tourism may enjoy Naked in Haiti: A sexy morality tale about tourists, prostitutes & politicians. It is mostly entertainment (at least for heterosexual males) but it takes issues raised by feminists seriously. And it totally skewers politicians!

Removes blinders from the eyes of any sociologist.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-19
This book examines the practice of social science from several angles, like turning a sea shell slowly in your hand, looking at the curves and openings and aspects. The author accomplishes this by looking at social science through the eyes of empirical, phenomenological, critical, and analytical social scientists.

Sound boring? It isn't -- and you can learn from each perspective. You can also learn why there is no one right approach. Some questions fit better into one framework, some into another. Any social scientist who weds him/herself to a given approach is wearing blinders. This book removes those limitations. Ideologies become tools for social examination. This book should be the starting point for any social science student.

Essential work on the nature of the social sciences
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-01
Not very many people seem to read this book, which is a shame. In my opinion, this is a book that every serious academic social scientist should read. Bernstein takes on the difficult but extremely important--as well as largely neglected--question of how the social sciences differ from the natural sciences. The book is divided into four parts, which deal roughly deal with naturalist theories, linguistic theories, phenomenology, and critical theory in that order. He has an extraordinary gift for making clear even the most subtle ideas and manages to deftly summarize material that otherwise would be extremely difficult. In the process, he gets to the heart of complex ideas and neatly illuminates the essential problem each has.

Comprehensive, yet complex overview
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-09
The revival of pragmatism, which can largely be traced to Richard Rorty's work provides an important framework for a variety of problems ranging from philosophical, through legal, cultural and literary. For someone who wants a good overview of the debates around pragmatism, this volume provides a good introduction.

The variety of essays provides a good selection of the span of modern pragmatist thought. It includes excellent articles by both Rorty and Putnam, who have very different philosophical takes on pragmatism. A few excellent survey articles on the history of pragmatism and articles that engage specific applications of pragmatist thought. As might be expected, the summary article by Stanley Fish is sure to infuriate some readers.

This is a book for someone who has a background understanding of pragmatism, but wants to learn more the uses to which it is being put.

This is an excellent and important book of well-written positions from a variety of perspectives. A fan of pragmatism may be turned off by the 2nd through the 6th essays, but of the following 25 at least 23 or 24 are well worth reading. The section on law debates the question of whether philosophy influences or "supports" law. I came away, as I'd been before, convinced that moving to pragmatism in philosophy is likely to have a good effect on legal opinions and that Rorty is absurdly unfair to the value of his own work by stressing that law can get on without traditional philosophy. Of course it can, but what needs to be said is that we would be better off if it did. The concluding essay by Stanley Fish is wonderful and makes a point I've been trying to find someone to agree with for years, namely that religious tolerance is a contradiction in terms; tolerance is a restriction on religion.

This book is incredible; there hasn't been anything like it since the Story of O and, frankly, if you were turned on by Lolita, here's a User's Guide that would probably make Heidi Fleiss blush. Take it from me, I'm the author.

Another excellent book by Fast
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-04
This is a great book, co-written with another author. It follows Fast's usual formula, which is to center each chapter on research from a notable researcher, and add interesting commentary and explanation about that research. The book also has interesting interviews from dozens of people that support the researchers.

It taught me some new stuff about eye contact, and I've read tons of books already about eye contact.

It is kind of dated, but it makes more for an interesting, historic read, because the information is still useful.

An insightful read. Perhaps more could have been made of the investment practicalities involved in when to actually make a transition from one style to another. It would also have been nice to have been given further details on style index constuction in order to aid the investment profesional. But overall, a seminal and defining book on style investment.

Excellent, a Truly Unique Book

This is a very unique book. It covers topics
which other books do not. Most other investing
books look at stock picking, technical methods
for market timing, or basic value vs. growth
strategies.
This book goes beyond these areas and suggests
how and why value vs. growth cycles occur.
It also touches on topics not discussed in
other areas, like the earnings life cycle,
equity duration, and the macroeconomic variables
that influence the stock market. It also
touches on how institutional investors behave
and criticizes, justifiably, some of the
decisions they make.
I have read about 300 books on the markets,
and this is quite unique. I thought I had
read it all after over almost a decade as a
full time trader.

Review Date: 2002-08-26
This is the most detailed, most clear, most organized
facial anatomy book. It covers from skin tension lines,
facial muscles, facial nerves, to skin agin and many more.
Each topic has its own extensive photos and highest quality
illustrations, together with a list of the very helpful
citation, references at the end of each chapter.
I have read this book at least 5 times, and I still
constantly use it as a reference for my computer facial
modeling and animation research work.

Anyway,.. I hope that this book will print at least
100,000 more copies. It's simply a piece of art..!!
