Scandal and Reconciliation

I must admit that I began to read this book with some degree of trepidation. The book's author is the wife that Charlie Chaplin never spoke of, and is widely viewed as the most distratious of his four marriages. Based on much of the evidence that is available, one would not expect Lita Grey Chaplin to give a fair view of her ex-husband. Yet in "My Life with Chaplin", she does not an exceptional job of plodding her personal disasters that began with her courtship with Charlie Chaplin.

It has been said that there are three sides to a story, yours, mine and the truth. If we consider this principle, Lita and Charlie are certain to have skewed certain incidents of their life together in favor of themselves. In reality, we will never have the whole truth about their marriage. But since Charlie never really talked about this marriage, we are left only with Lita's view. From her adolescent encounters that left her pregnant through her marriage that was destined to end in divorce, Lita's portrayal of Charlie is often vilanous. Whether it is entirely factual, this is how she saw him at that time.

With the hardship that clouded their relationship, it would seem a stretch for Lita to say anything nice about Charlie. Yet the last chapter gives their story a sense of reconciliation. At their time, they were two very scared people in a relationship that was doomed to fail. A much elder Chaplin does not let his anger from the past prevent him from helping the him to help the mother of his two sons conquer chemical dependancy. Their sorrow over misdeeds of the past gives the book a good sense of closure.

My Vice Is Verses will aptly serve to introduce the poetry of Bernard Yaeger, a Midwesterner dedicated to family, church, country, and his fellow man. His poetry describes love, life, frustrations, triumphs, humor, and contemplations on the state of mankind. Here also are pleas for tolerance, peace, love, and understanding. The poetry ranges across diverse forms including sonnets, ballads, and four liners. Conversational Tennis: Some conversations that I watch/Are often like a tennis match./The words are battered back and forth/But the entire talk is seldom worth/The time it takes to listen to/The Things they say but seldom do.//And when the thought is talked to death/The talkers stop to catch their breath/Then take up where they were before/And talk and talk and talk some more./Although tennis is a finite endeavor/Some people seem to talk forever.

Worth It's Weight in Gold !!!

An excellent book detailing myopia research by contributions from some of the professional 'heavy-weights' in the field of Ophthalmology.

The whole notion that one may 'learn' to improve their eyesight (myopia) has often fueled ridicule against such propositions and having decreased my own myopia from -4.0 diopters down to -2.0 (and still improving) by employing techniques mentioned in other related books on the subject of natural vision improvement, I was thrilled to come across such items as:

"Finally, Medina and Fariza (1987,1993) argued that the traditional correction of myopia with negative lenses reintroduces the error that initially simulated it's development, and therefore is likely to accelerate its progression. This conclusion is also compatible with the notion that individual eyes have preferred refractive set-points to which they return after being corrected ... " sec 3.2.1 page 35.

"The rapid development in electronic technology has, in recent years, extended greatly the facility to monitor biological activity and has stimulated and renewed interest in whether the extent to which we can exercise control over nominally involuntary autonomic functions has clinical utility in the treatment of certain psychological and medical disorders. Operant conditioning (or biofeedback) has, however, yet to gain general acceptance in the medical fraternity even though recent work has striven to resolve the methodological limitations of early investigations. Ophthalmic applications of biofeedback have achieved varying levels of success with regard to the correction of occulomotor anomalies .... "The principal aim is to train patients to gain greater control over voluntary accommodation in order to ameloriate functional myopia, although it is claimed that the facility can also be used to treat early presbyopia and latent hyperopia. .... "It is suggested that patients can anticipate improvement of unaided visual acuity to 6/9 or 6/6 with a commensurate reduction in myopia of 2 D to 3 D (Diopters). Of relevance to this chapter is that Trachtman (1987) also speculates that up to 2 D of myopia reduction occurs in the initial stage of training from a relaxation of parasympathetic-induced spasm of accommodation and that subsequent myopia reduction emanates from patient control of sympathetic-induced negative accommodation." Strong woman

This is a wonderful book in that it presents women as strong and
able to do much. If you are tired
of reading books about "evil" people, this is a good choice.
Nancy is a great woman, simple and strong. She becomes
widowed and takes her son with her on a long
trip by wagon out west. Many advertures await them as they reach
their destination. Mr. Albertson is a blessed writer who
keeps the story moving forward. As I read it, he helped me feel like I was right there over 100 years ago, riding on that
wagon pulled by 4 mules. Cheering my new friend Nancy on
to her destination, all the while admiring her commitment. So many books are about men and their adventures, but finally someone, even though the author is a man, wrote about a woman.
The tenderness with which he wrote it makes me feel that he must have known some great women in his life
and wanted to pay homage to them. I loved it and
hope Mr. Albertson will write a sequel.

Dr. Bernard Jensen is an authority in the field of naturopathy (natural medicine) and nutrition. His influence in present day trends such as organic food, food supplements, herbs, juices, exercise, and spiritual attitude, has been decisive towards creating what is now termed as a wholistic approach to health. Reading his books is enriching and heeding his advice is a sure road to leading a high quality life. I strongly recommend this as one of his best for anyone seeking an introduction to a new way to health.

If you're looking for a good devotional, rich in wisdom and not lacking in spiritual insight from a good source, check out this book. I was looking for a good way to get my mind on track when I didn't know where to start out thinking sometimes about spiritual things....it just makes you stop and think on certain topics which otherwise might not come to mind within the course of an average day. If you have a moment, it will be enough to take a few seconds and read from this book. It's great.

Stunning!

Review Date: 1999-01-04
I've often wanted to read the wisdom of Christians through the ages, but have not known how to get a hold of their writings, or have been overwhelmed by the effort required to decipher the language-usage of the past. Bernard Bangley has taken care of all that in a daily devotional where he has translated the wisdom of the ages into modern language. For example: To read what a Greek monk who lived in 355 A.D. wrote about prayer and have it pertain to my prayer life is astounding. . ."Relax your prayers. Do not work so hard to have your request granted...prayer that is not distracted with a wish list is the highest achievement of the intellect." Beyond the knowledge and insight that this book has given me (and it's only January 4!) I find comfort in the continuity of the ages. Mankind hasn't changed that much after all. We still seek God and we still struggle . . . Get this book!
