Joan was a person of ability, a born boss, but she was immature and lacked academic training, Shaw asserts in the Preface. An evolution in thought must first appear as heresy, misconduct. Joan seeks out Robert of Baudricourt. She prays and talks to soldiers. She is fearless. Joan claims God has told her to raise the siege at Orleans and crown the Dauphin at Rheims Cathedral. Robert decides to make provision for her and for five or so soldiers to go see the Dauphin. The archbishop in Chinon, where the Dauphin is located, explains that a miracle is an event that creates faith.

The English claim that at Orleans they were defeated by witch craft, sorcery. Cauchon avers that Joan is a heretic. He points out, nevertheless, that Joan practices a sort of nationalism. The inquisitor says at first he thought Joan's case was a political matter. Then he decided it was one of the gravest cases of heresy within his experience. The Epilogue deals with the canonization.

The play is a wonder.

Interesting potential

A fascinating book about a topic that not too many years ago was regarded akin to snake oil. At one point, all that was known about this subject was anecdotal. And since events like earthquakes occur irregularly, it was hard for researchers to systematically study this phenomenon.

But thanks to the authors, a large body of evidence has been collected into this text. It spans the fields of geology and seismology. The hope is that by methodically studying the gaseous outdiffusion from the earth, reliable precursors can be found. Even if these give only a few minutes warning, that is enough for critical power supplies to come online, lifts to unload, and other precautions.

The ever increasing cheapness of sensors and the increasing coverage of wireless networks means that the suggestions in the book might be adopted by dispersing a wide array of wireless sensors at earthquake prone regions.

This is THE biography of Orwell to read

The centenary of Orwell's birth has brought a number of books about the author, including two new biographies (D. J. Taylor's Orwell: The Life and Gordon Bowker's George Orwell). While the other books might have varying value for whatever revelations of the man and his life that they contain, Crick's book remains the best biography of Orwell because of its analysis of his politics -- a key component (if not THE key component) of both his reputation and his legacy. To this analysis Crick adds a probing examination of Orwell's life, accepting none of the man's accounts of it (as presented in his many works) at face value. Throughout the book Crick deflates the many exaggerations and debunks several of the myths that Eric Arthur Blair used when constructing the public image of George Orwell. The combination makes for a first-rate examination of both the man and the legend.

It is difficult to classify Taylor's novels. They don't fit into any ready made niche. They're billed as mystery and suspense, and they deliver those qualities sure enough, but they are a lot more than that. They are more literate, thoughtful, philosophical and insightful than most murder mysteries. Taylor lets all kinds of sexuality burst out in his novels.(...) I can highly recommend this novel.

Mistakes at Work
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-06
This book is a homely extension of an article of the same name by Everett C. Hughes. In fact, Hughes' article is appended to the book chapters. It is intended to show that mistakes at work are common and to be expected and do not have to be explained as deviations. It also takes up issues of the way mistakes are typically handled by workers, under what circumstances they are most likely to occur, when the workers know mistakes are being made, the control of the definition of mistakes, and who pays for mistakes. The book makes no effort to cover the literature on mistakes at work, but selects only those tales which illustrates given points. -- from book's back cover
