A Linguistic Analysis of Dialect and Creole Languages
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-27
This booklet provides an analysis of the language of West Indian dialect speakers in Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados and Guyana. The language is compared with Standard English and Black American English. Linguistic and cultural interferences are discussed. Useful insights and practical approaches for educators, linguists, community workers, and other professionals are provided. This monograph is an exercise in dialect and Creole language differences. It could be made into a book length study, which would be a welcome addition to language studies - The Journal of Caribbean Studies

More than a study of rhetorical forms
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 1998-04-19
The "Gradus" was once the preferred method of language and art instruction. It consisted of copius examples that the student transferred verbatim into a copybook, and then analysed under the supervision of a tutor. The compiler of this book succeeds in this challenge using a comprehensive, though at times frustrating format. Every device (there are about 550 listed, though 2,000 are identified in the index) begins with a short definition, sometimes followed with synonyms and antonyms, other times with obscure references to other books. Next are several examples, many drawn from contemporary literature, television and film, followed by a number of remarks. Personally, I find the book inconsistent in places. Where it shines is in its analysis of the more "common" techniques (for example the discussion on intonation, irony, narrative, question, reasoning, etc.). The examples are excellent, the commentary and remarks explore these techniques in depth. BUT, if you are searching for insight on some of the less common or outright rare and never used techniques; in fact, where you might find this book useful, it sometime lets the reader down, and yet at other times excels. Often you are referred to the OED, or works on rhetoric, linguistics, etc. Sometimes the examples are simply citations of other works (for example, "see Lucky's speech in Waiting for Godot") and in other cases they are quite unique. Consider for example the entry under "EPANADIPLOSIS" - the useful definition is "The ending of the second of two corrrelative clauses with the word or words that began the first. See Dumarsais (4:139), Scaliger (4:30), Lausberg, and Morier." --- Well, I don't have access to these tomes, not likely to either. I need to rely on the examples. Two are given, both very interesting. The first is from Malcolm X, "You bleed when the white man says bleed. You bite when the white man says bite, and you bark when the white man says bark." The second is Robert Frost "Possessing what we are still possessed by, Possessed by what we now no more possessed." O.K., this technique appears to have promise. But we find in the remarks that "the desired effect is emphasis, hackneyed and hyperbolic repetition ... where many of the examples seem to occur by chance." I don't see the element of chance in either example. The technique, in my opinion, is considerably more dramatic, almost hypnotic. The emphasis follows on the next passage. This is a book of forms, and forms are the basis for literary development. ON balance, the author succeeds by creating a useful GRADUS, a sourcebook for the exploration of forms. This is an excellent book. Unique in comparison to other "competitive" books and texts on rhetoric. Its fun, full of insights and the best book on the subject currently available.

Excellent financial dictionary

This text not only defines basic financial terms but, in addition, also defines and explains uncommon financial terms that are not widely known or heard of. The terminology dealt with in the text applies to those who have only a basic understanding of finance and seek translation as well as explanation and to those who have a dense financial vocabulary and seek to refresh their definitions of terms.

For those who have the fluency or the patience to work through the german text - this is a fantastic resource on the history of one of the Kriegsmarine's most important bases. Includes a wealth of diagrams, aerial photos, and photographs showing the development of the port, its wartime use, and documenting its eventual destruction. Absolutely indispensable for those who are looking for more information on Wilhelmshaven, and highly recommended.

Modern, Straight Forward and Useful Optics Book
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-30
I've been designing diffractive elements for about two years. I first started knowing almost nothing about DOEs (except that they worked on diffraction). Even after two years, and a couple of successful designs, I was still in the dark on some of the methods used in designing DOEs.

Bernard really puts a good book together. He starts with the very basics (diffraction), moves into designing DOEs (iterative and natural optimization methods, like GA and SA), and ends up with chapters on actually fabricating devices. He covers in very informative detail (like, say for the working engineer), and goes short of giving the shop away.

If you're tired of attending seminars on designing DOEs that just cover fourier diffraction principles, or books that really leave out the nitty-gritty, then Bernard's book is for you. There is an assumption that you have a decent understanding of optics, and are comfortable with at least two years of college math (calculus and DEs/PDEs).

Review Date: 2006-06-22
My 2 1/2 yo grandson LOVES this collection of books. Easy for him to carry around and simple facts. Description says for older children but because these are the cardboard books feel they are very appropriate for toddlers. The first page introduces the dinosaur and gives pronuciation help. Next pages tell type of eater, size in comparison to known objects and grownups and last page something special to that particular dinosaur.
Great for taking along! Easy carrying cage with magnetic clasp keeps books secure.

A Powerful Story and Timely!

Review Date: 2006-04-30
Bernard Milton's DIRTY RIVER forces you out of complacency right from the start and thrusts you into a fascinating mix between well-considered historical and geopolitical intrigue and pure guts and bullets lawman thriller. If you're a fan of the works of Lee Child, Keith Ablow, and to some degree Dennis Lehane, you'll want to pick up this book.

This book is so well rendered, and by a former officer on the US Border Patrol, that you will feel the truth ringing from the strong, fast-paced fiction. Every description is a mouthwatering Mexican dish, fused with a hard-boiled style that will keep you sneering and learning Mexican curse words for hours.

On top of all this, it is timely, with regards to current 2006 immigration debates. Milton's book has something to say in that regard as well.

A great book, and PERFECT for beach season.

A History of Anatomy and Physiology

Review Date: 2007-10-21
Even the non - professional (biology, health care professions) might like having this added to their library. While one may have studied anatomy and physiology (A&P), they may have missed some of the interesting history that went into the subject. Dr. Knight provides this history and writes well as he does whether it be in a text book or murder mystery.
