Clinical Neurology by Bernard Jacob AlpersReview Date: 2004-05-08
neurologists, general practitioners, internists, diagnosticians
and a whole host of medical people will benefit from the
rendition set forth by Dr. Alpers MD. He has an extensive
coverage of the cerebellar system, the motor system, electrical
reactions, disturbances of gait, cerebrospinal fluid, lesions of the motor neurons, pain symptomatology, peripheral nerve injury,
diseases of the spinal cord and the meninges, vascular diseases
of the brain, tumors and abscess, cranial trauma, epilepsy,
extrapyramidal diseases, multiple sclerosis, poisons and their
impact on the nervous system, endocrine disorders, the nuclear
amyotrophies, degenerative diseases (cerebellar degenerations),
brain and spinal cord disorders and diseases of the skull.
The work has full diagrams of the peripheral nerve distributions
of the upper and lower limbs. There is a pictorial representation
of electroencephalogram rhythms in the frontal, parietal and
occipital areas of the cortex. This section has a clear analysis
of the electrical potentials of the brain. Dr. Alpers MD
has an instructive section on permanent cure for trigeminal
neuralgia.
"Permanent cure
of the pain in trigeminal neuralgia is offered
by operation. Section of the sensory root adjacent to the pons
has many
advocates and in skilled hands is extremely safe.
Partial section of the root is performed.... Relief lasts from
6-12
months. Injection of the Gasserian ganglion is advised by
some in preference to operation."
The author has a classic
description of ankylosing spondylitis.
He describes the etiology, pathology, symptoms, diagnosis,
prognosis and treatment
for the disease together with the
related diseases- Marie-Strumpell, Bechterew versions of the
same disease type. A
preview of the author's description
follows together with some classic quotations:
"The diagnosis is made without difficulty, the stiff spine
and back pain being quite distinctive in the early stages and
the root pains later... TREATMENT: Adequate
physical mental
rest and a high vitamin diet are important. Warm climates are
better than cold. Salicylates help keep
the patient comfortable and if used should be employed generously. Anemia is sometimes
present and should be treated with
iron. Vaccines are of doubtful value. Infected foci should be removed. Local heat
is extremely important, as infrared,
and gives great comfort.
Paravertebral injections or rhizotomy may be necessary
for the relief of pain. X-ray treatment
offers real help and
should always be used."
The author depicts classic cerebellar degenerations; such as,
Olivopontocerebellar
atrophy,Parenchymatous atrophy and
Primary Degeneration of the Corpus Callosum (Marchiafava's Disease).
This book has
a wealth of information on neurology. The work
is titled "Clinical Neurology". It is depicted in an easy-to-
read form
with many illustrations and both major and minor
variations of numerous disease processes, classifications,
sub-classications
and genres.

A well-researched book!Review Date: 2007-11-05
Annette Renard leads a double life in Nazi-occupied France as the town's teacher and also a new member of the French resistance movement. Brought into the resistance group by a childhood friend, Annette takes part in missions that include sabotaging Nazi trains and helping crews from downed airplanes escape to England. As their successful missions accumulate, the group is given a more challenging mission, which involves enlisted men as well as the resistance fighters. As readers follow the dangerous lives of the resistance and servicemen, the danger escalates. It becomes obvious there is a traitor in their midst--but who?
While reading this book I felt that I was actually there taking part in the action. I could feel the cold while waiting for the train to derail and also the tension and fear in the air when Annette comes face to face with the enemy. This book is well-researched and the reader will feel that many of the events may well have actually happened during the war. The author developed characters that accurately represent some of the many people from all walks of life involved in World War II. Once I started reading "Cloaked in Darkness," I found it hard to put down. This well-written, tension-packed book will thrill readers of historical fiction, World War II or general espionage novels.

Color, Music & VibrationReview Date: 2007-01-08
Learn about experiments in which a hothouse made of red plastic panels stimulated the growth of plants, while blue panels stunted plant growth.
Discover how the color of foods stimulate different responses in the body - red foods are stimulants, for example, and the yellow foods are all natural laxatives.
Your imagination will be challenged and intrigued by the many possible applications of color, music and sound to health as discussed in this book. Dr. Jensen is working on a complete book of his color studies, which should be ready for publication in 1989.

Great for the home baker.Review Date: 2003-05-06
The one drawback for me is that the recipes in this book are scaled for the homebaker. Therefore, this book is a great resource for those readers wanting to wow their friends and extra special guests. Bernard Clayton has, most importantly, explained how any baker can produce a first rate pie crust.
I therefore advise you buy the book and get busy experimenting with the recipes - you'll never go back to mass produced pies!
