This is an enjoyable book which talks about popular music, and how it has intermingled its way with avant garde ideas. This book is a great read particularly bercuse it has a section all about the "No Wave" movment of the late 70s-early 80s.

Simply put, this is the single most devastating, incredible, challenging, revolutionary, terrifying, haunting, beautiful, and rewarding book i've read (... again and again and again). It's repeatedly forced me to reassess everything i've thought i've "known," and deepened my analysis of both knowledge itself and knowledge's nature. At the same time, it's made me a little crazy and robbed me of the great faith i once had in academics (in other words, if you're working on a degree, you may want to read this *after* graduation). The fact that it's out of print prompts me to seriously question the nature of the publishing industry as well, actually - it seems truly a crime against the progress of learning that more people don't get to read this extraordinary work.

the best and most objective book on the fist Chindit operation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-22
The book is essentially an expanded diary of operations of one of the columns that went into Burma in 1942-43 as part of General Orde Wingate's Chindit operations. Fergusson describes the events of the campaign from his perspective to a level of detail that no other author has. Fergusson takes no sides in attempting to either defend or attack Wingate. He simply presents what he experienced. Fergusson was one of the few commanders in the Chindits who had Wingate's respect but was not a political or personal crony of the man. His observations of the operations, their strengths and their weaknesses are unclouded by political or personal bias. A very interesting book.

I, highly recommend this DVDs, there is 14 outstanding video documentaries in the compilation. It is not "How To" videos but more like a private interview with the artist and the understanding of his process to create master pieces.
Beautiful videography, it is very entertaining with great music, a great visit of the home and workshop of those amazing wood artists

What a beautiful little book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-08
This is a wonderful introduction to the Hebrew Bible. Bamberger is concise and lyrical in his describing the Hebrew Bible, and the place it has had for the Jewish people and mankind. Here is Bamberger's own summary of the major message of the work.
"Ancient Israel was a little people unimportant in numbers, wealth, material culture, military power, political influence. During a large part of its national history it was subordinate to great powers which possessed an advanced technical and artistic civilization. Yet this little people, over a period of centuries , produced writings vibrant with passion and beauty, that proclaim a new and sublime way of life. They taught an unseen, amythical, universal, righteous God.Against the authority of divinely born or ordained kings they upheld the dignity and freedom of the plain man. They affirmed the unity of mankind and the right of all men to just and compassionate treatment. They envisioned a world redeemed from tyranny and war, where men might live in harmony and brotherhood under the divine law."
This book also considers what it calls the 'deficiencies of the Bible' 'Biblical Criticism, Texts and Translations of the Bible, the idea of the Messiah, The Chosen People, The Bible as teaching a special way of life.
A beautiful little book.

Complex relationships in wild, modern, Northern Nevada.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-12
Jack Ross is a Reno, Nevada, private eye who gets pulled into a case more out of obligation for a friend than need for business. He's asked to find a man believed to be dead for over 40 years. His search leads him through an array of characters and places that are connected by a series of events set off by a murder 40 years earlier. Bernard Schopen captures the feel of the gaming and 'anything goes' side of Nevada while giving image-provoking descriptions of the locations that capture the emptiness, diversity and beauty of Northern Nevada. A very special book.

A great resource for colloquialisms and americanisms
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-23
I purchased this dictionary at a Spanish book festival three years ago and it has been a useful reference material thus far. The dictionary is geared towards speakers and learners of Latin American Spanish just judging by the vocabulary throughout the dictionary. It includes plenty of colloquialisms as well. The dictionary is arranged alphabetically in Spanish with the equivalent English word or phrase. This dictionary can help clarify many inquiries you may have about the terminology, words, phrases, anglicisms that are so diverse in Latin America and even in the USA. It contains approximately 5000 entries and here are some examples:

1) chotear= mofarse de alguien. =to make fun of somebody
2) chamuchina= populacho=riffraff
3) palanganear= fanfaronear=to brag, show off
4) pinche= maldito=lousy
5) cucar=molestar=to provoke

These are just some of the many examples of the type of vocabulary that is included in this dictionary. Of course this is selective vocabulary, which one may deem not important to know but it won't hurt to understand what these words means since they are part of the colloquial Spanish spoken by many.
