The Bee Keeper is a lovely traditional book for children and perfect timing with the new Bee Movie making bumblebees exciting, as linking the two creates inspiration for reading among children. Set in what could be the 1900s the illustrations are wonderfully endearing and the story weaves a great moral message.

It doesn't seem like it would be easy to have an impact on society from behind prison walls, but, easy or not, that is what K. C. Carceral has achieved. "Behind a Convict's Eyes" is tangible proof that even a convicted felon may make an important and positive contribution.

Carceral (the name is a pseudonym meaning "belonging to a prison") is a convicted murderer serving a life sentence who has created a series of vivid word portraits of inmate life. These capture not only his own experiences, but the politics, economics, and culture of prisons as well.

The portraits done, Carceral follows with a scholarly effort that builds on an existing theory of "toxic shame identity" to suggest why people become criminals.

His own work is supplemented throughout by "discussions" from the four editors of the book.

Carceral says little about the crime that brought him to life in prison. Reading his book cannot help but make one wonder what he could have achieved had he not committed his crime -- or if his contribution to society would have been as great as the one contained in this slim volume.

A book that seems aimed less at the general public than at students and those who work for or deal directly with the criminal justice system, "Behind a Convict's Eyes" deserves a wider audience that it is likely to get.

The only translation worthy of the original.

Professor Huppe's translation of Beowulf manages to preserve the meaning and rhythm of the original while at the same time making the poem accessible to non-scholars. The translation can (and should) be used for introductory literature classes as well as for more advanced classes, in which students read the original. Professor Huppe's translation enables the reader to appreciate how the poem fits within the "hero" genre, and to appreciate the struggle of the hero in the earthly city.

Wonderfully illustrated & lifelike portrait of St. Bernard, patron saint of travelers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-11
This is the second book for young adults in Claire Huchet Bishop's series on the lives of the saints and tells the story of Bernard, patron saint of travelers and skiers. It follows her book, 'Christopher the Giant,' a story of the man who was to become St. Christopher.

Simply told in modern idiom, this is the dramatic portrait of Bernard, who seems as much a part of this day as of his time (the 10th century, at the time of the Crusades). The rich, colorful illustrations of Maurice Brevannes, a celebrated French artist, lend a very lively element to the book, showing Bernard throughout the story -- first as a boy, later as a churchman, and lastly as a great leader.

Claire Huchet Bishop was an established children's book author when she began this series on the saints. Her books are true treasures -- it is a special pleasure to find the originals, published in the middle of the 20th century, so as to share with our grandchildren the books we loved when we were growing up. (Suitable for 5th or 6th graders up through middle school, perhaps -- but can be read aloud to younger children, and will be enjoyed by all ages.)

I was just in Berkeley, CA and happed to see an exhibit of the original art which is the subject of this book at the GTU Library. The illustrations in the book are true to the original and the book provides the necessary context for a complete appreciate of this marvelous work.

Father Tamburello does it again! His other book, Ordinary Mysticism, was like peeling an onion. I cried turning the pages as he laid bare a complex topic.

This time around, he reveals in pages a layman can turn the secrets of one of the world's enduring mystics.

We can't easily check with Bernard, of course, but it wouldn't surprise me if Father Tamburello explained things about Bernard that even Bernard didn't know!

Anyone who's ever wanted examples of typology in the Old Testament that points to Mary in the New Testament can find it here. These four homilies focus on the Incarnation and Birth of Our Lord. This is great to foster devotion to our Blessed Mother.
