Overruled is a sort of irresistable version of Heartbreak House, shortened and minus many characters. The same sort of philosophy
on marriage in general. Characters even in this play have their mirrors. Juno is a perfect mirror of Boanerges from the Apple
Cart, and Mrs. Lunn couldn't be more like Mrs. Hushabye

The Annals of Flodoard of Rheims 919-966

Review Date: 2007-09-23
The west in the tenth-century is poorly represented by narrative primary sources besides the Annals of Flodoard of Rheims.
The ninth century, on the other hand is highlighted by The Annals of St-Bertin, the Annals of Fulda, etc... Tenth century
Francia highlighted by the fragmentation of the Empire of Charlemagne and the confrontation between the Carolingians and the
Robertians. Francia is divided into at least six individual kingdoms that sometimes unify under the power of a strong king.
Flodoard was born in the 890s and educated as a youth at the cathedral school at Rheims where he eventually became a priest and canon. Soon, under the tutelage of the archbishop, he was appointed the 'historian of the church.' This was not as safe as it seems for during the struggles over the archbishopric his possessions and benefices were twice confiscated. Flodoard was already well known in the intellectual circles for his hagiographic work for specific regions (which he continued while writing his Annals). Flodoard was also involved in politics (since Rheims was an important archbishopric of the period) and began a monumental work on the History of the Church of Rheims along with being appointed as chief archivist of the substantial archives of Rheims.
This work is an annual recording of current events in the model of those of Saint Bertin in the previous century. He is extremely well informed about northern Francia, as well as the south and occasionally the happenings in Rome (where he was sent as a diplomat) and northern Italy. He concentrates primarily on the political intrigue amongst the constantly changing lords, kings, and nobles in power. There is almost no discernable agenda in this work besides the desire to record the facts and occasionally the role of God. Although the work does center on the events concerning Rheims this is understandable since this is what he would have the most first hand experience and participation in. This is a very detailed, year by year account, with little tangential information.
The introduction to this volume is astoundingly detailed. This is vital since the politics of the time period is very complex and undergoes constant change. However, the editor could have included something about the Frankish culture as gathered from the text (the consecration of bishops etc). The maps are rather crude but the occasional illustrations and extensive genealogies (sadly without dates) add to the overall understanding. The introduction however, is almost worth the price alone.

Anti-semitism its History and Causes by Bernard Lazare

An early study of this historical phenomenon, with a good introductory section. Reject it or not, it makes a refreshing change
from the current declamations on anti-semitism. A useful first step towards understanding some current rabinical religious
justifications for the extermination camps.
It widens perspectives beyond the narrow British views of a war in which they smashed Europe and the English Empire. Given the post-war disaster almost any means is used these days to justify the demands for unconditional surrender, which made a Pyrrhic victory the only possible outcome. So:- perhaps a refreshing step towards reconsidering the self-righteousness of the secular liberals?

Real answers to the issue of hate against the jews.

Written in 1895,by a very respected jewish-french socialist writer this books vividly details the history of antisemitism
from ancient times to the 19th century. It's narrative and descripton are essential for any serious interpretation of the
eternal question of why the world has hated the jews so much. A question that sometimes has taken different form of unspoken
prejudice and direct manifestation like the mass killing in the holocust.
The strenght of the book lies in it's conclusions -that the jews are hated because they are always viewed as strangers- wich have outlasted the life of the auhtor to serve as a permanent remainder of how human beings can be guided by the wrong principles in their relationships with other human beings that may seem to be different because of their values and religion.

What ever they are charging for this book is too little. It is the most interesting, original AND theatrical analysis of this
play that has ever been written. I directed a production of the play and this book gave me insight and inspiration beyond
belief. It makes you look at Shakespeare's text with imagination. GET THIS BOOK!

A crazy hyperbolisation from Shaw finds truth today.

I have always admired Shaw, but really, this time he has outdone even Heartbreak House. Shaw skillfully leads us into supposing
Englnad about 50 years in the future from when he wrote it, and with a British constitution. From the "Royal Veto" to the
point at which America declares "The Declaration of Independence is cancelled, we wish to rejoin the British empire" this
truly is a "political extravaganza". I have never laughed so much at the way government is portrayed, and yet we learn a
lesson throughout: the illusion of democracy extends to places where we wouldn't have looked and gives a wonderfully applicable
look to America's government now, every government!

This book is an analytical treatment of the subject, that enables the reader to design successfully chemical methods (such
as separations) and predict the required conditions for such methods. Part 1 describes the ways of obtaining selective effects
through the use of competing reactions in aqueous media. Part 2 investigates how modifications of chemical reactivity of solutes
are produced by using nonaqueous solvents. Particular consideration is given to ionized molten salts and molecular organic
and inorganic solvents. This is a broad ranging study of the field. It demonstrates the theory and methodology behind practical
problems in solution chemistry and enables the reader to solve them effectively, taking into account the chemistry of the
system. The work is elucidated by numerous examples provided in context plus nearly 200 problems at the end of the book.

Daniel Kane, a Philadelphia detective, investigates who let the dogs out - and trained them to kill. Good descriptions, since the dogs immediately sounded worse than Kujo! Good detection, since I didn't see the ending coming. Recommended for mystery lovers.
