America's military has always touted itself as being the bastion of equal opportunity for Blacks. Just how true is this assertion? What exactly has been the military's attitude towards Blacks?

Strength for the Fight, a comprehensive history of Blacks in the military, examines the historical record and forces one to rethink the military's so-called benevolence to Blacks. Nalty's work brings up several facts regarding America's attitude in having Blacks serve in the military.

1. America never wanted to arm Blacks no matter how patriotic they were. Of course slavery and the possibility of insurrection played into their fears of having Blacks in the military.

2. Blacks serving in the military were there because of expedientcy not because they were willingly welcomed as equal partners.

3. Military icons thought Blacks were inferior soldiers and did their best to keep them in segregated units.

Those and other insights give you the tools to evaluate both the good and bad that the military has placed on Blacks. Everyone should remember that the military is a mirror image of the majority society. It changes out of necessity not because it needs to do the right thing. Nalty corrects the one sided view concerning the benevolence of the military and also gives the rich history of those who fought for America's freedom even when they themselves were not free. The major fault one can find in his work is a paucity of information regarding Black women in the military. Other than that this is an outstanding work which should be read by all ROTC cadets and leaders serving in the military. Pressing on inspite of the indignities layed on Black military men and women is the rich heritage that they pass on to future generations.

This book is great. This book allows one to peer into the harsh life of black soldiers. I was shocked how many on the WWII black soldier who re-enlisted had to give up their military rack just to fight in the war. I commend Mr. Nalty for telling the story of the Black Soldiers.

It can be called a bible of U-boat design.Because its writer has a long experience over the subject. I recommend all designer to have this book on their shelves!
Unfortunately it needs some modification by considering recent developments on submarine design.
It can be good for those who wanna design U-boats for themselves. But its reading needs some knowledge of general engineering.
I recommend it for all Submarine fans.

Review Date: 2004-01-30
This book provides an overview of vision, visioning, leadership and examples of successful leaders but the authors warn us that little or no learning can be transferred from one organization to another because each requires its own distinct approach. Of all strategic management tools, visioning is usually rated first but satisfaction with its use receives a lower rating because a sound platform on which to grow a vision was missing. Visioning is the process by which leaders can articulate the future directions they wish to pursue, focusing on the future of the organization and its role in society. Forming a vision is a complex procedure involving a sophisticated process of discerning and equally sophisticated negotiations with all key stakeholders who need to be involved in achieving the vision. A motivating vision or one that produces "creative tension" implies innovation, departure from past practice and different organizational capabilities. In order to overcome indifference and resistance that major innovation provokes, a champion is required to identify the idea as his own, to promote it actively through informal networks and to risk his position and prestige to ensure the innovation's success. The champion must have the capacity to inspire and enthuse others with his vision of the potential of an innovation. A good place to start is to agree on what has been done well and what the group wants to continue to do well. A well-prepared vision should spontaneously help individuals to take decisions and free people to take initiative. The authors provide guidelines for promoting a shared perspective and generating a corporate vision.

One chapter is devoted to Allen Sheppard and GrandMet where the goal was to take a successful company, ensure it continued to be successful, and make it even more successful. Often this situation is more difficult than a typical turnaround, because people do not see the need to change. The top group developed a set of criteria for a vision statement that was so far reaching that it could not be publicized for two years but it led to the sale of 25 companies and the acquisition of Pillsbury. Another chapter presents the remarkable success story of Toray Industries and the role visioning played in its transformation in the decade from 1987. Describing the way in which vision works, H. Maeda said, "We keep the image in our minds at all times when we take decisions on various business matters. Keeping the picture of our company in say, ten year's time, we decide on management strategy and business policy. In a company of this size, the leadership of the president is absolutely crucial. He must be able to exercise his leadership at a fairly practical level, and have a management philosophy as well as an ability to manage. Another important quality he needs is the ability to win the hearts and minds of all employees and to inspire them to focus on the shared goal. I believe that a CEO must be prepared to hear everyone's views, let them discuss thoroughly matters that are important to management, and get totally involved in the process of building up consensus among directors. This will ensure that the future direction of the firm will become firmly established on shared values, but the important point is that there must be constant effort on the CEO's part to create and maintain a forum at which all directors can express their views freely to the CEO. There are many facets to leadership, but to put it simply, it is the ability of the leaders to anticipate what is coming, and the possession of the sense of balance in their judgement." Few people will read this book and not come away with ideas for improvement.

This is a good book because it covers the subject of "Southwest Louisiana Pop" music in great detail. Lots of names and quotes of the people who shaped the sound. The author did his homework and the reader gets a lot of info - a LOT. I have read this book several times because it is a great refresher course on the musicians, promoters, the night clubs, and what all.

Louisiana musicians have always gone their own way, fusing elements of various styles to create music of stunning beauty. One of the most creative and finely crafted forms is Swamp Pop, a fusion of Cajun, R & B, country, and pop styles. Shane Bernard has written a definative history of Swamp Pop based on extensive interviews with the makers of the sound. He discusses the diverse background of the music and its interracial origins. This book is essential for any collection of American music.

This was the biography that filled-in the romantic perspective etched by the David Lean film,"Lawrence Of Arabia," on this then adolescent's imagination. The film was expansive, larger-than-life, suitably so for a man-of-letters, an artist, writer and military man. Properly balanced, properly distanced from this charismatic scholarly man, Jeremy Wilson provides an engrossing, archeological dig on the man himself, stopping with the contradictions of Lawrence's psyche. This is a good starting point for anyone interested in reading about genius among the mediocre, both military and political. When you read through his personal letters and read an earlier work of his middle east diggings, "Crusader Castles:...," you will discover that this literary, military strategist and inventor(much classified)projected himself into his future. I am so happy for other dreamers to discover this uncommon man in this 21st Century. If politicians could learn beyond schoolyears our problems in the Middle East would subside.

Informative, clear, & broad understanding of T.E. Lawrence.

I am by no means an expert on T.E.Lawrence, this biography is really my introduction. Mr. Wilson seems to take all sources of information into account before making a statement regarding Lawrence. There have been many romantic and erroneous biographies of this man, but this book seems to treat Lawrence with the academic distance required to provide as impartial a view of the man as is possible. It is clear that Wilson views Lawrence with affection, but he trys to keep it in check most of the time. He gives a clear view and description of reasonable motivations for many of Lawrence's actions, based on corroborative evidence and basic common sense given Lawrence's age, surroundings, and the political environment he was emersed in. I feel confident that I have as impartial a view of Lawrence as I will ever get. At times the narrative of the current environment gets a bit long and I yearn to return to Lawrence, but I understand that a key to understanding Lawrence is to understand his world and the middle east of the day. I must admit, as an added bonus I learned much regarding the formation of much of the middle east to which I was ignorant of simply from this book. When I want romance I will rent "Lawrence of Arabia"!

This book has been a blessing to me ever since I got it in the mail. Bernard Bangley's modernizing of the profound and often prophetic insights of Bernard of Clairvaux is impeccable. The material is conveyed in a concise, clear manner but also allows us to peek into Bernard's spirituality and how he is feeling at the time the sermon is delivered. It is not a dry modernization, rather it is a clarification. This book is a must read for anyone seeking the Lord and to know Him in His beauty.

The spirit of Talleyrand

I agree with the other reviewer in preferring Mr. Bernard's work to that of Mr. Cooper. Bernard brings Talleyrand to life - through the use of the erstwhile bishop's own memoirs & those of his friends - and even his enemies. What came through most was the fabled Talleyrand charm. A modern reader can clearly see why he was as influential as he is reputed to be. As Casimir de Montrond replied to his mistress upon being asked why he liked Talleyrand so much, "My dear madam, who can help loving someone with so many vices?"

Napoleon's Diplomat - Brilliance in a Silk Stocking
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-18
With all due respect to Duff Cooper I suspect this is the best English biography of Talleyrand about; it tracks his youth (including his fabled meeting with Voltaire), his involuntary admission to the priesthood, his Revolutionary activities (including his successful bid to strip away church assets), ihs exile in America, his affair with de Stahl, his team-up with and subsequent falling-out with Napoleon, his afterlife as the star of the Congress of Vienna and Louis XVIII's prime-minister and his long retirement (including his role as kingmaker in the 1830 revolution). Napoleon once said that Talleyrand was "filth in a silk stocking"; certainly many of Talleyrand's financial goings-on would qualify as corruption by modern standards but, as Barnard reveals, his foreign policy was generally a peaceful one, and his general approach to governmance sought to reduce civil discord through building a legitimate basis for the government of the day - be it Republican, Bonapartist, Bourbon or Orleanist. Even his so-called womanizing is explained in these terms: on his death bed his primary goal was to legitimize his long term mistress and to return to orthodox Catholicism. A great portrait of one of Europe's most influential and entertaining minds.

Review Date: 2003-03-01
This sort-of science-fiction novel by Bernard Werber is simply excellent - and very original. The premise is a group of researchers who undertake a peculiar exploration: They study the afterlife! We see their research, and its social consequences - and it's gripping from the begginning to the end.
It should be noted that what we see in this story is not (as far as I can tell) the author's real opinion about what happens after death. If you are offended by stories where the world is not the way your religion says, then avoid this book - you will be offended. But it is a great novel, and a good philosophical work.

As a student who is interested in pursuing illustration, this book is a golden gem for it is a rather thorough journey that is fun to dive into. While many other books similiar to this would simply showcase all the artists' body of work, this book reveals the creative struggle that James McMullan went through with each poster to create an image that met his client's needs. Reference photographs of his models and early color and pencil studies depict the story that is accompanied with each poster that describes McMullan's process. Sometimes an early draft of one of his posters didn't hit the nail with the director of the play: the character depicted in the image needed to look older and more angry, less naive. Whatever the case, McMullan would have to go back and rework. And in some cases, he might even start over with an entirely new idea and take a different road with the poster. With each poster, there's a different story, a different process, a different challenge. And none of the posters that are shown in here have been neglected for the book reveals it all. Above all, I appreciate James McMullan's conceptual talent with his posters that manage to create an image that defines the play as a whole. With this book, it is a pleasure to find the process behind these posters as well as being able to gaze upon their beauty.

Rarely is one able to glimpse into the world of a well-known illustrator. But, in this book, the illustrator James McMullan, takes us into his studio and explains just how he has created the 36 posters, over a 30 year period, for New York City's Lincoln Center. The full-page reproductions of McMullan's posters combined with his lucid prose makes this a beautiful and highly engrossing book. When I went to buy McMullan's book the bookstore clerk said, "this is the most gorgeous book in the store." Indeed, he was right.
